Breakfast sandwich of my dreams (sans tomato)
    Lily V.

Soooo I'm pretty sure I've tried all the sandwiches on their menu, and I can say that they make sone damn fine sandwiches here. The portions are huge and very meaty, so when you're thinking "$11.50 seems like a lot for a sandwich" you're getting your money's worth. Favourite of all is the breakfast sandwich. Which is strange for me, because it's not like I don't like the others (I really really do), I just loooove the breakfast sandwich so much. It's simple and gooey with the egg, cheese and baconnaise along with lots of bacon and lettuce & tomato. What more do you want to start your day with? Other favourites include the fried balogna and smoked meat. Sandwiches cone with house made chips and a house made pickle wedge. We like their pickles enough that we've bought them by the jar for ourselves. Can get busy at lunch but the wait isn't usually too terrible.

Much like duck, if grilled cheese is ever on a menu, I will most likely order it. Add to the mix a new sandwich shop with a focus on local producers and craft products (who doesn't like a new place to check out, really), then you've got a deal. Chef Alex Sneazwell's latest venture, Sandwich and Sons, is just that. Located just north of the Yellowhead Trail on 156 St and 131 Avenue, Sandwich and Sons is in one of the oddest spaces ever, nestled in between industrial businesses and serving up a handful of sandwiches to the surrounding crowd for lunch. It makes sense though to have a small deli storefront to support the full service catering business and since opening two weeks ago, Edmontonians have responded with an amazing interest. I'm not the only one who wants a good sandwich! I was lucky enough to have a weekday off last week (they're only open Monday to Friday) and enlisted my friend Josh, my personal garburator (official job title since 2006), to go check it out. The menu is displayed on the side wall with a space for feature sandwiches. All orders include a side of freshly fried house chips and a slice of made-in-house pickle, which are also available for purchase by the jarful. The Montreal smoked meat calls out to most people, definitely grabbing Josh's attention. Sometimes meat intimidates me. Just knowing that a sandwich I can't even properly hold makes me scared. I'm a wuss, I know. But that's why bringing Josh is always a good idea, and nobody ever complains about the abundance of moist, tender, smoked beef brisket in between two slices of rye. House mustard and sauerkraut round out the sandwich, making the classic Montreal sandwich just a little bit more closer to home. For those wondering, I did have to take out a chunk of meat to properly hold it in my hands. This isn't a bad thing. As for myself, I ordered the grilled cheese. Who the heck orders that when fried bologna, smoked turkey, and spicy italian are all viable options? This girl. I just cannot resist. Plus I could see the panini grill making somebody else's order ooze a combination of old cheddar, Monterey Jack, and smoked gouda. Yeah. It was amazing. It was crisp. It wasn't greasy. And the artichoke spread on the sourdough bread was spot on. Winnnneeeeer. Chef Sneazwell is still working on building his ingredient sources, the meats currently from Sangudo Meats and the bread from a variety of sources. He hopes to source his bread from Vienna bakery and once his convection oven gets delivered, to start making his own. I don't know when I'll ever have a Friday lunch off, but Foie Gras Friday is quickly becoming a thing, a Vietnamese banh mi-inspired sandwich featuring braised bacon, mortadella, pickled carrots and herbs and duh, foie gras pate. It made Josh go back (lucky bum!) and now I might be responsible for his sandwich addiction. Oops. If you're in the area or have a mad hankering for some quality classic sandwiches, head over to Sandwich and Sons!

Montreal Smoked Meat!! HUGE!! Really good, but wanted just a little more tangy :) Still yummy!

Oh wow, these sandwiches are HUGE and DELICIOUS! I was introduced to this place by a colleague and it truly is a hidden gem. I had the Montreal Smoked Meat sandwich and he had the Spicy Italian. We split and exchanged a half of each so we could both try. The Montreal Smoked Meat was huge, so much meat piling out. Great bread, good mustard, the meat was tender and great. There felt like a little something missing though - just a little tanginess that I wanted. Maybe it needed a bit more mustard or more of the Montreal seasoning on the meat. It was still really good though. The Italian sandwich was awesome. Just delicious, lots of meat, nicely laid out, and had that nice little kick to it. They also make their chips fresh right there! Yum!

Sandwich & Sons is located just north of the Yellowhead on 156 Street in an industrial part of Edmonton. It's a new deli-style concept opened by Chef Alex Sneazwell (formerly of The Manor, Von's, El Cortez) offering soups and sandwiches during the day from Monday to Friday. The menu itself is simple and is written in chalk on the wall. Classic sandwich combinations are put together with an emphasis on using local ingredients and housemade fixins. Each sandwich includes a side of housemade chips and a pickle, and the price is inclusive of tax. Daily soup and drinks are available for $3 each, and the housemade mustard and pickles are also available for purchase to take home. I stopped by for a quick lunch today with my boyfriend, and of all the choices on the menu the top contender for us was the Montreal Smoked Meat sandwich ($12). Shaved brisket, house mustard and sauerkraut are piled high between the two warm slices of rye, there's no shortage of meat here! The brisket comes from local producer Sangudo Meats, and this meat is fantastic. The brisket is sous vide for 24 hours then smoked with pecan wood. The resulting brisket is tender, flavourful, and not overly smoky. Grainy mustard is one of my favourite things in sandwiches, and everything combined with lightly pickled sauerkraut made this sandwich a hit. Our other top choice was the Spicy Italian sandwich ($10). Hot salami, mortadella, artichoke spread, pickled peppers and havarti are placed inside of a roll and squished inside a panini press. The resulting sandwich is crispy, has a kick of heat and is oozing with melted cheese. The sandwich doesn't have the grandeur of the Smoked Meat, but it's a pretty solid sandwich on its own. I did find it to be a bit greasy, but that's just the nature of the ingredients used. Other than the sandwiches, the chips on the side weren't too greasy and just lightly salted for a bit of flavour. I was a little sad that Sandwich & Sons didn't make dill pickles to accompany their sandwiches, but the tangy pickles still had a bit of bite that I enjoyed. In conversation with Chef Sneazwell, he mentioned that the smoked brisket, turkey, bologna and bacon are all supplied by Sangudo Meats. It's great to see a small sandwich shop supporting local in the ways that they can! From social media it looks like Foie Friday is going to be a thing, so you foie gras fans should flock there to celebrate the end of this week with a foie gras banh mi. Sandwich & Sons is open Monday-Friday, and catering is available too. Stop by and give them a try if you're in the area - the sandwiches are solid.

Roasted sweet potato with brisket soup ($3.00)

What up son? I've heard rumblings about Sandwich & Sons ever since it opened and even though it's only a five minute drive from my work, I hadn't been yet. Well, that was rectified when a friend and I decided to check them out for their foie gras Fridays. The place was slammed when we arrived at noon. Parking is cramped and limited. The line literally curled around the restaurant, I was pretty surprised although I really shouldn't be, seeing as how Edmontonians completely adore sandwich shops in town (Elm Café, Farrow, Jacqueline's are a few that come to mind). The menu is concise but I like that. I'll take a small selection done well over a large one every time. It seems like there are six mainstays and a special Friday (note: they are only open Monday to Friday for lunch!). Seriously, such a genius idea, find a niche and run with it. Trip#1 - Daily soup ($3.00) - the soup of the day when we went was smoked turkey and roasted cauliflower. The soup was creamy and had real pieces of turkey in it. I couldn't even tell that the base was cauliflower (funny enough, I was talking with some friends about cauliflower and turns out you can use it as pizza crust?!) but the soup was smooth and refreshing. - Montreal Smoked Meat ($12.00) - we decided to share our sandwiches so that we could try both. My friend was debating between the smoked meat and roasted chicken (cranberry sauce = my crack) but obviously, we ended up with the smoked meat. The rye bread is so picturesque. It went well with the smoked meat but this ain't no Schwartz's style of smoked meat. But that's a given. Not bad for Edmonton standards. The homemade mustard gave a nice zing to it. - Foie Gras Fridays ($17.00) - this was what we came to S&S for. Foie Gras Fridays. Lo and behold, this edition of foie gras was sandwiched between two pieces of fluffy French toast. Yuuum. Not to mention drizzeled, okay more like smothered in maple syrup. Verdict? For $17.00, it's definitely overpriced. The sandwich itself is small and packs lots of flavour (read: it's heavy) but I doubt I would have been full from just the foie gras sandwich itself. Keep that in mind if you want something more substantial. Trip #2 - Daily soup and drink combo ($4.00) - roasted sweet potato with brisket. The soup was delicious - creamy and a subtle sweetness from the sweet potatoes. It reminded me of butternut squash soup but much lighter in flavour and texture. - Roasted turkey ($11.00 - turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce and gravy on a roll. A solid portion of tender, moist dark turkey meat. The sandwich was good but it needed WAY more cranberry. Cranberry sauce is my crack/kryptonite. Sadly, I could barely taste any cranberry sauce in our sandwich. - B.L.T. ($10.00) - thick cut, double smoked bacon, mayonnaise, lettuce, tomato on sourdough bread. A generous slab of bacon that was crunchy and not too greasy. The sourdough is lightly toasted/warmed up. A classic done right! Trip #3 - Grilled cheese ($7.00) - cheddar, smoked gouda, monterey jack with an artichoke spread. I was stuffed silly from lunch elsewhere but Pboy hadn't ate so I tagged along and introduced him to S&S. He went with the grilled cheese and loved it. The cheese oozes out, the panini gives it a nice crunch and the artichoke spread adds a little je ne sais quoi to the mixture. Anyways, I dig what Sandwich & Sons are doing. The guys making the sandwiches are impressively fast and efficient, friendly and it's my 'hood. North side is pretty deserted so a new spot is always welcome in my books.

Love! Love! Love their sandwiches. I've had their Smoked Meat, Cheesesteak, and Fried Bologna (yes fried bologna), and they are all amazingly good. Best sandwich shop in Edmonton for my money. It's a little out of the way, but worth the trip. House made mustard and sauerkraut.

It's the season for anything apples, so I was happy to find a caramel apple cronut & went for a classic grick middle (as per their website & one of my favs - Fried Egg, Bacon, Rosemary Aioli, Smoked Cheddah, Tomato Jam, Arugula). Sadly with a cane & a reuseable bag, I couldn't take a coffee to go (stair logistics are hard enough) but it's always a great cup when I do have a free hand. Oh, I should mention in case I've never did in previous reviews, neither of these food options are something one wants to eat when trying to look presentable. As it's deliciously messy! There's a few bar seats at this location but it's best to take your food to go. At this particular location (there's 4 locations now!) there's no accessible entrance (nor exit). Kind of baffles my mind on why they didn't build a ramp with the newer set of stairs at the exit door. I even made the comment that it's really too bad they don't use the order window on the side (like they did in the pandemic), for us that need to avoid the challenge of stairs. There's also no railings on the steps, so be sure footed in wet & winter conditions (even if you're not disabled). So as much as I love the food & coffee at Farrow, I have to leave it as it's a place I'm going to only on a randomly decent mobility day for the knees & legs.

PALS!!! I have been a huge fan since their opening day in 2022 and it's about time that I finally…read morewrite about them! Part of the venerable Strathcona restaurant monopoly of The Next Act (the OG), Meat (the meaty one), Pip (the brunchy one), and Marlo (the taco one), Pals holds their own as the sandwich one. This five-restaurant stronghold wouldn't work if each and every one of them wasn't so dang good. But they are. Pals showed up on the scene after Pip moved across the street and there was enough room in the building to fit a delightful little sandwich shop in there as well. Pals to the left and Pip to the right - and one (beautiful) shared washroom downstairs for both. It's a pretty harmonious arrangement as far as I can tell! Pals might be a small little sandwich guy but it boasts a beautiful outdoor patio in the summertime that just about doubles the space. Named Favourite Handheld on the Edmonton Food Faves We Crave 2024 list and most recently awarded Best Sandwich 2025 in EDify Magazine, you'll also find them on the Worldwide Faves section of this very website. The interior is somewhat small but very bright and fresh. Casual light wood high-tops, counter seating, a few bench seats near the back, and the aforementioned patio. You'll also note pops of their signature yellow, especially on their unmistakable brick facade outside. The restaurant feels breezy and gives off a comfortable vibe that makes you want to "stop in to grab a quick sandwich." And maybe people-watch out the window for a few minutes. The staff is also super friendly which makes you feel like you're hanging out with your pals. (Ha! See what I did there?) Situated at a table on a Saturday evening, I was looking for the maximum Pals experience! Pals is all about the drinks and offers an impressive array of cocktails and beer, especially for such a small shop. The Winter Sangria sounded like a seasonally appropriate delight while their Caesar made with pepperoncini brine is an ideal compliment to their use of pepperoncini elsewhere on the menu. On this visit I opted for the Strathcona Sling (Gin, cherry liqueurs, orange & pineapple juice, bitters - $15.00) which not only sounded delicious but also might be the signature beverage of the entire neighbourhood. This drink sounds like it might be pretty sweet but I didn't find that about it. It's very refreshing and the grown-up flavours from the gin and bitters hold their own. What sounds like a kid's shirley temple actually tastes quite adult. This would absolutely be the quintessential patio beverage on a hot summer day during the Fringe - a cocktail that lives up to it's name. The Pals food menu is an extravaganza of sandwiches! There are fourteen different sandwiches in two categories; made hot or served fresh. There's usually a feature sandwich as well. Be prepared for sandwiches like you've never seen them before! But the snacks, soups, and salads are incredible as well and the quality certainly doesn't stop with the sandwiches alone. In an effort to dig into this part of the menu a bit more I thought it prudent to order the Soup & Salad Combo (Choice of soup & salad with house focaccia - $19.00). A great option if maybe you don't want a sandwich. Pals usually has two different soups and salads on the go so you're able to customize this dish with whatever combo you like. I chose the House Soup (dill pickle & spicy pepperoncini) and The Other House Salad (iceberg lettuce, tomato, green onion, blue cheese, bacon, buttermilk ranch). Let's start with the soup. How unique!! You've never tasted a zingy little bowl of soup like this before! I don't know about you, but I love a dill pickle soup very much (maybe it's my Eastern European ancestry) but the addition of pepperoncini totally changes the game. This soup packs a punch but in the most interesting and delicious way. And then the salad! I ordered this one because it sounded like a wedge salad (one of my favourites) without the wedge. A deconstructed wedge salad, if you will. And boy did it deliver! The flavours of tomato and bacon together are so classic and the generous chunks of crumbled blue cheese were perfection. I loved how well-dressed everything was - not a dry leaf in the house. A salad may sound like a boring thing to order but certainly not in this case. Let's not forget the focaccia which cannot be treated as an afterthought because it was incredible. This bread was impossibly light while still possessing the unctuous and oily quality that you want from a focaccia. The crust was impossibly crispy and dusted in salt. What a dream! Honestly, I know that you need to order a sandwich... But maybe you don't? I'm going to have an existential crisis about this. But yes, I obviously ordered a sandwich. This might be an unpopular opinion but I highly favour the "served fresh" sandwiches at Pals by a lot. The BLT is the best in the entire city, I swear. The Burrata is completely insane - I've never seen a stack of prosciutto so high.

All positive things! It just wasn't a GREAT sandwich. Perfectly acceptable, and I might even visit again if I worked in the same building or lived on the same block. But it isn't something I'll ever travel for again. The bread was soft and fresh, but it lacked any chewiness or texture, and was too thick. The spread was good, but there wasn't much of it, and what was there got lost in the thickness of bread and didn't really come through in the flavour profile. There was a lot of meat, but it was the same type of basic deli meat as you would pick up on sale at the grocery store deli counter. All in, there wasn't anything in the sandwich that popped or excited the tastebuds. It was just.. a big sandwich. To make it an even better sandwich, I would have preferred a thinner bread with a chewier crust so it didn't dominate the sandwich so much. That would have also allowed the spread to come through more, which could also be helped by putting a little more of it on. Lastly, the sandwiches could benefit from a trick from italian american delis use: oil and vinegar. A drizzle of oil and red wine vinegar would bring everything together and really make the flavours explode so the sandwich is less boring bread, and more yum. Sliced pepponcinis or pickles would also help add some bite. Worth a try if you're just looking for a basic stomach filling lunch and are super close, but there are definitely better sandwich shops in town if you wan't more than just a big version of the sandwich your mom used to pack in your ... lunchbox.
