We've eaten at Rick and Alice's many times. Today we were a group of nine. We were immediately greeted as if we were family. They even moved someone else (who hadn't ordered yet) to accommodate us. After we were seated they continued to treat us with what seemed like special attention; it wasn't just us, they were treating everyone this way. Service is an 11 out of 10. As for the food, this is a grill and that's the kind of food that they offer. Most of the menu items and are common grill type meals and what they lack in originality they make up for in consistency and generally good quality. One dish actually was a little original and that is the weekend Breakfast Skillet. There are variations of this dish at most diners but Rick and Alice's adds an egg to the top of it. This is a big meal and should satisfy most people. It was $11 and change so the prices are reasonable. Don't come for the waffles because they don't offer any. The coffee is diner quality but there are endless refills and in a large group that's what you really want anyway. If your expectations aline with the American style of diner that this is, you will be pleased with Rick and Alice's Grill as the dishes are well made and the service is second to none. If you are looking for trendy breakfast sandwiches and dazzling Guatemalan coffee, this may not meet with your expectations. Oh and I really doubt that anyone here is really named Rick or Alice but I didn't actually ask. read more

Nothing beats going to a restaurant and being greeted by one of the owners. I frequently come here for breakfast, and every time Alice greets me. She doesn't remember my name, but she always welcomes me back and knows to keep the coffee coming. This is a great spot for breakfast -- simple and unpretentious. The staff are quick, the food is good and the coffee is always flowing. If you're looking for a quick breakfast or a large drawn out brunch, you'll get great service from Rick (who's usually in the kitchen) and Alice (who's always out front marshaling her staff). read more

Rick and Alice's Grill really isn't a grill. At least, it's not what I think of as a grill, mainly serving grilled meat dishes. What it is, is comfort food done really well at really reasonable prices: all-day breakfast, diner sandwiches (Philly Beef, Rueben, BLT, Montecristo, Melts), spaghetti and meatballs, chicken alfredo fettuccine, juicy burgers, simple salads, a couple of steaks. Throw in some interesting if anachronistic Asian dishes: spring rolls, stir fries, wonton soup, and you have this eclectic gem that is Rick and Alice's. It's clearly Mom and Pop owner operated. There is a faithful regular crowd. The atmosphere is open and friendly. I stop in for lunches mostly if I'm in the area or if I can arrange for 109 street to be "on the way" somewhere. Typically, I have a small salad and the calimari which is cut into small bites, lightly battered and always fried just right, a generous mound of golden rings served with home made Thai chili sauce. If you think you've had Edmonton's best calimari some where else, you haven't had it here. If I'm hungry, I go for the Montecristo sandwich, layers of ham, turkey and cheese served warm between slices of savoury French toast. It too is served just right, golden and not greasy. Can there be anything better? Of course, I leave calling my cardiologist for an EEG and arterial scan, but it's only a once in a while indulgence. Value for quality for that smile that only good comfort food brings ... Rick and Alice's rules. read more

Rick and Alice's had intrigued me for quite some time, largely because its name reminded me of my favorite breakfast joint in Berkeley, Rick and Ann's (http://www.yelp.com/biz/rick-and-anns-restaurant-berkeley). And while both Rick and Alice's and Rick and Ann's serve breakfast, the spaces, the food, and the clientele differ tremendously. Rick and Alice's is located in a dowdy office building in Parkallen. While the restaurant itself has some homey decorative touches, the overall feeling is that of a retirement home. And the food is also reminiscent of that at a retirement home, but I imagine regulars find this comforting. I had a Monte Cristo sandwich, which wasn't bad. And service was friendly. But there's nothing here that I couldn't do at home with little effort, provided I had a functional kitchen (I don't have one right now). There's nothing bad about Rick And Alice's, but there's nothing special about it either. It's a greasy spoon and it was packed on a sunday with an after-church crowd. read more

What a surprise! Wanted just a quick, local place that wasn't the big name restaurant. Googled and this gem popped up. Walked in and was greeted and seated immediately menus placed and coffee poured in a Matter of minutes. Friendly staff happy to chat for a minute about the menu, placed our orders, we had burgers. Absolutely loved them homemade patties cooked to juicy and all the trimmings. Our order was out in less than 15 mins and perfect. We left stuffed and content. A perfect little gem located on 109th. As other people have said, Rick and Alice's is definitely a comfort food stop. It's the kind of place you go to when you're not quite sure what kind of food you feel like, because there's bound to be something on the menu that you'll like. I stopped by for breakfast with friends. All of our food was delicious. There's not too many things I can add, since their food is fairly standard. It's not meant to dazzle the tastebuds - it's meant to make you feel full and happy. Both of which I was when I left. The only thing that I took a star off for was the service. After taking our orders and bringing our food, our waitress completely ignored us. We didn't get any drink refills, even though all of our drinks were empty, and we had to hunt her down in order to get the bill. read more

Heard about Rick & Alice's Diner through word of mouth and thought I'd check it out. The thing about this diner is that it might not look like much when you walk in but the service is great and the food can probably best be described as good, simple comfort food. For some, that might not be how you'd describe it but for me the whole experience was nostalgic of the kind of restaurants I grew up in. Unlike many other places in the city, there isn't a whole bunch of smoke and mirrors and fancy stuff just old fashioned items like hamburger steaks, hot turkey and clubhouse sandwiches. Our regular weekend brunch spot. There's nothing assuming about Rick and Alice's. The food is just like I'd make it at home; fresh, appealing and always consistent. And what the atmosphere lacks, Alice makes up for with her personality. Another little indie restaurant that I thoroughly enjoy. The small family business is run by the very busy Alice and family, working the main room and her husband Rick who handles the kitchen. We frequent this location. It is on the south side of Whyte. We drive from the far north side to indulge in a hearty breakfast almost bi-weekly. Anyone who can prepare a breakfast as good as my own is worth my attention. We have attended all three meals with and without children or grandchildren. Alice even helped pack us up (while the grandkids were still eating) as we rushed to a play! They know how we like our coffee. They try to accommodate all their customers. We were in the area waiting for an appointment and we happened upon this grill. The restaurant was pretty empty at this time, only 4 tables other than us. We sat down and ordered chocolate milkshakes. When the girl came back to get our food order, we said we were actually just wanting the milkshakes. She said "we serve food, not just drinks. So you've already sat down so I guess you can stay but next time you have to order food. We don't do just drinks". She was clearly annoyed and other tables even looked over. I felt like a scolded child. I have never in my life heard of this, it's a little diner so I assumed ordering a milkshake was fine (not to mention if this is policy, there should be a sign to inform out-of-towners). And even if it was just coffee or something, or if it was busy and we were taking up a needed table, I would understand more. But in an almost empty restaurant where we're still spending $12 just for drinks, it seems like we didn't need to get berated for assuming you could just get a milkshake in a diner. So, don't worry, there won't be a "next time". read more
