This is the awesome find. A plus where menu is unique, Barry is a very hands-on owner. We enjoyed the Ahi tuna with the pepper blackberry sauce, trigger fish with a coconut sauce, accompanied by cilantro jalapeño rice and broccoli. We finished it all up with the crème brûlée. Amazing food and they seem to take covid seriously. All employees were wearing masks and super friendly. Not a lot of outdoor seating because it's not a big place but totally worth the wait and the view is killer. Had the fried grouper sandwich and paid extra for the onion rings and spicy dipping sauce. Fried to perfection, no sogginess and the bun was toasted. The pan seared crab cakes are fantastic. My wife got the shrimp salad and we were both impressed at how spicy they make the shrimp. Stopped on for a quick yuck bite after the beach. Ordered the stout battered mahi which was very nice. This fried coating and good size pieces of fish. Paid extra for the onion rings which I wouldn't do again. They're ok but not worth the surcharge. Wife enjoyed the prime rib. I'm new to Flagler Beach and a friend suggested having lunch there today. I called ahead to make sure that I could order vegan options and was told everything was made to order. When we arrived, Megan waited on us. She was able to put together a beautiful plated dinner-sized salad with all the veggies you serve and they modified their portobello mushroom sandwich for me--grilled w/out oil plus grilled no oil bell peppers and onions on a gluten-free bun (no cheese!) and the broccoli side was steamed just right. I was so happy, left a large tip and a card thanking them for serving vegan options. I live only a few blocks from there so will definitely be back! Thank you for getting it right! read more

We stopped in right at 11:00 AM on our way to St. Augustine, we found the tiny restaurant empty except for another couple so we knew we had arrived at the perfect time. The first thing that we noticed was how well this place is maintained, it is so neat and organized and exceptionally clean something you don't always find in a lot of Florida's small beach side restaurants. We were immediately greeted and given the menus and a extensive list of bottled beers and given a quick description of the beers on draft. We decided to try a IPA and a Mimosa the draft beer was ice cold which in my opinion is the only way to enjoy a beer, the mimosa was also very nicely prepared. I can't say enough about the service here, the servers were very friendly and attentive but not to the point of being annoying, great service on top of great food equaled a overall great experience. -Skip Burger - I ordered it bun less and I'm so glad I did this giant 12oz hand formed patty was cooked to a perfect medium temperature topped with crispy lean bacon, a slice of cheddar cheese and topped with a fried egg. The fresh lettuce, tomato and pickles were served on the side making this burger absolutely one of the best fork and knife burgers I've eaten in a long time I chose fries as my side. (I wasn't crazy about the fries because right across the table sat a pile of onion ring that had gotten my attention as soon as the server sat them down) As much as I wanted too it was impossible for me to eat more than half of this monster of a burger. -Grouper Bites - A very nice potion of Fresh Grouper fried in a light beer batter until they were crispy, no doubt this fish was super fresh, there are few fish that fry up better than grouper - light, flakey and mild tasting add in some tartar sauce and you have a great meal Turtle Shack can hang their hat on this offering. -Giant Onion Rings - These giant sliced onions are sweet and tender and fried extra crispy and it's no wonder they are so popular. Do not come here and miss out on this treat. At steps 6 and 7, you can use your own judgement, like the excellent crab cakes or the fish fingers. At all steps, if sitting in the non-air conditioned but screened outer area in the summer, swat gnats. This place is about 30 miles south of St Augustine, just south of the Flagler limit on A1A. Don't order the fish tacos! Went there with another couple & we all ordered different things. I ordered the Grouper tacos, my friend ordered the grouper sandwich. My tacos had so little fish on them we told them they forgot the fish & sent them back. Our waitress brought the plate back out, untouched, & told me that they weigh the fish for every order & I got the right amount, the fish was just buried under the rest of the ingredients & walked away. 1 taco actually had enough fish that it almost covered the top of the tortilla, the 2nd had 1/2 of that, maybe 1oz. & the 3rd had a piece of fish the size of a quarter. Not even 1 bite! The rest of the ingredients was lettuce & tomatoes. I wish I had taken a picture of them. They were the worst I've ever had & I order fish tacos a lot. These were $19.00, a total waste of money. My friends grouper sandwich on the other hand was a large filet approx. 7 oz. & he liked it. My husband was unimpressed with his Swiss Mushroom Burger having just a few slices of mushrooms & small amount of cheese. But after seeing the response I got from the waitress, he decided not to send it back. We won't return, there are too many good restaurants to choose from in Flagler Beach. read more

This is the ideal place to enjoy monster burgers, many seafood options, and great beer ( even Delirium on tap. You gotta love the atmosphere as it looks like it is about to fall down... but is indeed clean and safe inside. The outside tables look directly on the ocean (across A1A). A word of caution, if you get caught up in the appetizer's, drinks, main course, and dessert you can be surprised by the large check- so pace yourself. We go about once a month. It is just a short walk to Java Joint and you usually park on the shoulder of A1A. They don't have a parking lot! read more

We had probably 4 different people wait on us over the course of our lunch and 3 of the 4 appeared that they would have rather been anywhere else. Not being from the area, I rely heavily on online reviews to aid in deciding which restaurants to try. The Turtle Shack had excellent reviews overall on all of my trusted sites, so I figured it was an obvious choice. Sadly, we did not have the greatest experience. Some pros...it is right across from the beach, so if you're lucky enough to get one of the few outdoor spots then the ambiance is definitely a cool beach'y vibe. They have a pretty broad menu with something for all. We started off with the crab cake appetizer. It was $19...someone once told us that if crab cakes are less than $15 then they're trash. This $19 crab cake was worth every penny; it was very good. We had the seared version. I would definitely have it again and could've eaten the entire them myself. Our entrees are where things went down hill. My husband ordered the mahi sandwich, and I ordered the mahi tacos. At the suggest of our waitress we ordered them blackened. Having eaten quite a bit of blackened fish in our lifetimes, we know what to expect. I'm not sure if there may have been a mixup in the kitchen, but upon arrival neither of our meals appeared to have blackened fish. Both looked what I would call seared, but it could've been grilled (one of the other options). Neither appeared to have any seasoning at all (something expected with blackened fish). It was extremely bland and somewhat fishier than we expect from Mahi, leading me to question the freshness. However, we are right here in the heart of fresh fish country, so I wouldn't expect anything other than fresh fish. Based on the other reviews, I feel like our meal had to be a kitchen mixup. There was just absolutely no flavor to either of our fish; we had to add the little cup of sauce given to me for my tacos to both meals to give them even a bit of flavor. After such a positive experience with the delicious crab cake I really had high hopes, but sadly they were not met. read more

I really wanted to love The Turtle Shack. The staff was very friendly, and the menu choices sounded so mouthwatering, we had a hard time deciding on what to order. We started with a crab cake appetizer and the prime rib fries. Both were delicious! Unfortunately, the main entrees didn't keep the good vibe going. We ordered the grouper sandwich, kids' fish fingers, and kids' chicken tenders. They were all heavily battered and fried, giving them just the flavor of something fried. It overwhelmed the delicate grouper flavor, which was unfortunate. Our oldest ordered a burger and was a happy camper there. My fiance ordered the prime rib which he thought was overcooked and came with a side of mashed potatoes and broccoli, neither of which was seasoned at all. I ordered the special of pecan-crusted triggerfish in a red curry with a hint of peanut butter. Unfortunately this delicate fish was also battered and fried and the curry sauce tasted more like sweet peanut butter than anything else. I was disappointed but again the server was so nice, I didn't want to complain and ate it. My fiance described the food as older folks' diner specials, and I kind of have to agree. This place is ready for Restaurant Rescue, Bar Rescue. Actually both. Entrance is concrete, stained with grease. Yuck! Bar was filthy, junk and miscellaneous stuff all over the place. Staff was friendly but actually consumed with internal squabbling within earshot of guests. Draft beer was flat. Had a to-go order. No utensils, no follow up to confirm order, nada. Why people ever go into the customer service business without any real customer service excellence much less personality as this crew this night is beyond me. Perhaps this management can get professional help and turn this place around. Lacking that it will languish until it dies like a salamander on the road. Great lunch at the Turtle Shack. I suggested this place to my brother-in-law after seeing the 4.5 star rating on Yelp. He and I and our wives drove to the restaurant. It's one of those places you already have to know where you're going to find it since there's no giant sign to see as you drive north on A1A. Going south there's a bunch of turtles painted on the side so it's easier to find. I had a bowl of the New England Clam Chowder followed by the ahi. the latter was barely burned, covered with sesame seeds and sliced thinly and served sashimi style with wasabe and chop sticks. Very nice! Our wives split the Avocado Egg Rolls (what!?) ... 3 rolls cut in half.. they each loved 'em. My BIL had the crab soup (nice and spicey sez he) and a crab cake. We all left having had "just enough" for a light lunch. The owner, Dan, was very personable and the service was timely and deft. P.S. it's called a Shack for a reason... ad some of the turtle sculpture on the ceiling is way cool. The ambiance is very beach shack. If you haven't tried it give it a shot! read more

This place seems to be very popular with the locals which is always a good sign! We arrived shortly after six on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving and did have to wait about 10 min for a table. The locals were very friendly and let us borrow on their menus to look at while we waited and another lent us a chair for our elderly mother to sit in. Not a lot of extra room to stand and wait in. Only wine and beer is served here. No cocktails which was a bummer for me. I ordered a cup of the clam chowder and so did sonny. We both agreed that it was excellent! Packed with lots of juicy clams and had just a touch of heat to it. Hubby had the Maryland crab soup. I had a ton of nice crab meat on top which was delicious. He didn't care for the soup so much but that was more his fault than theirs. He forgot that he doesn't really care for that type of broth. Both sonny and had the Skip's burger for our main but both thought it could be skipped. He had the larger sized burger and I the smaller. I ordered mine medium thought it came more medium well to well done. The toppings were nice, egg, bacon, tomato, lettuce and onion. The fish of the day was a Grouper. Both hubby and mother-in-law had that. They really really liked it. It was cooked perfectly. The fish came with a choice of two sides. Mother-in-law got the seasoned fries but they came out cold.
