Service was impeccable, food was outstanding and I can't stress enough that my wife to be is ok with trying new things...(background; I'm a retired formally trained chef, so she's given me the reigns on trying new things so I know it's gotta be tight-tight)... And she loved it!!! More mellow atmosphere but now she wants to come back to see the house fully packed on the weekend (eyebrows raised)! We missed the plantain but that's cooking... I'd rather it be out than serve a substandard product...but everything else was on point. Wonderful place to have drinks and great food. I really enjoyed the live music on Saturday. The best way to go is to make a reservation because the space is small but packs a punch. Great decor and the service was excellent. We luckily got a table at the last moment on a Saturday night. Our reservation was between 10:15pm to 12:15am. We arrived at 10:30pm and I am glad we did because we almost lost our table. We had a table in the back corner with a column separating us from the rest of the space. Luckily our table was in full view of the band. We ordered the Chicken Suya since the Beef Suya was sold out. We also ordered the fried plantains. The food was delicious but the portion sizes were small for the price. The drinks were great. My man had the Jua Smoke and I had the Kango Kane. If the food portion sizes were bigger I would definitely give it 5 stars. We will definitely be back. read more

Great Ambiance. Good Drinks. Food can definitely improve. I love the speakeasy vibe and the only way you can get in is by learning a fun fact about the continent of Africa! Every guest has to do it... not just one person of your party! Hostess and servers were all nice and remained attentive despite how busy they were. Drinks- i tried the hibsiscus old fashioned. I like the nice hint of hibiscus and didn't think it overpowered the traditional drink Food. We had the jollof rice, beef suya, and fried plaintain. Jollof rice was so flavorless that I had to beg for salt... the salt didn't help. It tasted nothing like Jollof rice but like plain white rice mixed with watered down tomato sauce. The beef suya was only decent because of the pepper sauce and made it manageable. The fried plantains were okay. I'm not sure if the chef is from the diaspora or what but definitely need to revisit the recipes and try again. Other than the food... good place to the drinks and vibes. read more

Let's talk about vibes ! The decor inside this place is amazing ! Don't walk too fast because you might miss it. Their happy hour is great with a great selection of cocktails & crafted drinks. I came from Houston with Trybal in the MUST DO category of the trip. I really wanted to love this space and still encourage people to go since the big kinks may be growing pains. I hope the owners take this as a learning curve and make changes so they can survive. #1 I've been to many Speakeasy's and this just misses the beat. There were people standing around like it was more of a club or lounge, I could see outdoors so there was a lack of the dark and moody vibe that comes with Speakeasy's . Maybe a proper reservation system will help eliminate this. #2...the drink was horrible. I ordered an Espresso Martini and it came thick and only covered 1/4 of the glass. I asked where's the rest of my drink and the server said with a little bit of an attitude "that is the way it comes". The flavor was thick & chocolate. Very disappointing. The positives - that same server made a different drink that was whiskey based and asked if I wanted it. I considered but since I was on Vodka I didn't want to switch. It was nice that whether that drink was accidental or not, I liked that he circled back and tried to make it right. #2 the space and decor was done in nice taste #3 the music was also great and the location is good in the event you wanted to hop around. read more

This is such a beautiful space ! The people here are incredible. Ryan and I went here with our friends Raina and Khalil and we sat in a comfy corner with a cushiony couch and pillows. We got delicious and beautiful cocktails while the dj'd played great music. They do a lot of other live music and events here too. Ebonee was our waitress, she was super cute with a great attitude! She payed attention to EVERYTHING and was extremely on point. It is very humid inside but otherwise amazing vibes. Although, it is not a speakeasy. It's very open about the fact that it's a bar. From the outside it looks like a bar, step inside and it's a bar. Absurdly small portion for the $9 potatoes. Were not crispy either. However the plantains were excellent and if I were to go again I would 100% get those.. Soursop Milk- Have never had soursop before. I'm not the biggest fan of soursop but I can tell that it's a very well made cocktail. Guava Glow with Vodka- Refreshing and nice! We came in so excited to check out this place. I ended up getting turned away for "ripped jeans." I checked online and there was no dress code. I checked social media and they had people in their photos wearing ripped jeans. I went back and asked for a clarification...the bartender said if he was there, the girl in the photos would have never got in. He then said he knows the dress code is not on the website. By default, I give people the benefit of the doubt. I think the place is brand new and maybe it was everyone's first day. And the menu needs some tailoring. Dear Trybal Management Team, I am writing to share feedback regarding our visit to Trybal on Saturday evening. I want to be clear that this message is not written lightly -- I was genuinely excited to experience your venue after reading your website and seeing the photos, which set very high expectations around culture, sophistication, and hospitality. Unfortunately, our experience fell far short of what was advertised. We had dinner reservations for 6:00 PM and arrived at 5:55 PM with our QR code ready. At the door, we were told we needed two QR codes, which directly contradicted what is stated on your website. When we expressed this, the doorman explained that he "just works the door" and instructed us to generate another QR code or we would not be allowed entry. This required us to stand outside in freezing temperatures to access the website again. We were also told that the knowledge-based questions did not need to be answered correctly -- which raises the question of why they exist at all. If the questions are symbolic, there should be a clearer and more guest-friendly process. Once inside, seating became our next major concern. Our party of four was seated with two standard chairs and a very low sofa at a small round table. Given that we were there for dinner, this setup was uncomfortable and impractical. I approached the hostess to request a proper dining table and a higher chair due to the sofa's height. Despite multiple inquiries and suggestions -- including offering to wait for a table opening or combine seating -- we were repeatedly told nothing was available, even though tables later became available or were reassigned in ways that did not align with what we were told. During one interaction, I was shown a tablet with table availability indicators (red and green spots), which is internal operational information that guests would not understand or find helpful. When I reiterated that all we needed was a table suitable for four people to eat comfortably, I was told not to be rude, despite my simply asking for a clear yes or no. This interaction felt unnecessarily defensive and dismissive. Service was also inconsistent. Drink service took approximately 20 minutes, and one member of our party received their drink significantly later than the others. I am also very familiar with speakeasy-style venues. In my experience, while music is an important part of the ambiance, it is typically curated to enhance the atmosphere and allow for conversation -- not overwhelm it. Unfortunately, the music during our visit was excessively loud, making conversation difficult and detracting from what should have been an intimate, elevated experience. The restaurant area was cold, further adding to our discomfort. Additionally, the attire of our server did not reflect what is described on your website: "dress to impress, where African culture meets high fashion and every detail celebrates sophistication and style." Our server wore Casual sneakers, cut-off shorts, and a t-shirt, which did not align with the brand image that attracted us to Trybal in the first place. When our food arrived, it was unfortunately underwhelming for the entire table. At that point, given the overall experience, we finished quickly and decided to leave. Finally, when the bill arrived, we were informed that a 15% gratuity plus an additional 5% fee had already been added. While I later learned this may be mentioned on the website, it was not clearly communicated during service. Given the level of service we received, this felt particularly disappointing. Transparency around automatic charges is critical, especially when service does not meet expectations. I understand that Trybal is a newer establishment and that there may still be growing pains. However, the gap between what is promised online and what is delivered in person is significant. Sadly, this experience was enough to ensure that I will not be returning. My boyfriend and I decided to do a speakeasy hop date night and we had 6 on our list; Trybal was 2nd on the list and ended up being our last stop of the night because we just couldn't leave. We walked in on a Saturday night without a reservation just fine, but it was busy, so I would probably make one next time just in case (even though happy hour will probably be my new go to since prices are about half off). We sat at the bar and were served by Carissa and her counterpart who's name I wish I remembered because they were both phenomenal! The drinks crafted by them were AMAZING, when Carissa said she makes the best espresso martini in town, she's not lying! It's dangerously good and easy to drink unlike a lot of espresso martinis I've had in the city. The beef suya was tender and flavorful, and my partner really enjoyed his old fashioned. The drinks HIT so there was no need to continue the crawl, and we can't wait to come back. We so enjoyed our time and hospitality, thank you! read more

A good cocktail bar is hard to find and this is THE place. The drinks are delicious (dangerously delicious!), the food is unlike anything I've had before, the hospitality is out of this world, you feel a part of a community so quickly, they are always looking to go above and beyond and innovating in ways other places in the area just aren't. TERRIBLE MANAGEMENT AND OVERPRICED We arrived at 10:05pm for our 10pm reservation. We were told we had to wait while the people at our table were closing out. We weren't seated until 11pm AND they put us at a table way too small for our party. We were told we were just waiting until our table was ready, so we didn't receive any service for a bit more time. We had to ASK for service after waiting for 10-20 more minutes and were then told the kitchen was now CLOSED so we couldn't order food. This is when we really started to get frustrated, bc we could've ordered something while we were waiting for over an hour! Ofc this is when we asked to speak with management and the GM (lightskin with locs) came over and apologized and told us drinks were on him. This made our group a little happier bc at least they attempted to fix their mistake! We only ordered TWO ROUNDS before the GM came back and told us that only the first round was on him so we had to pay for the second. To be fair he didn't clarify how many drinks we could get, but he should've told us it was only one round bc then we wouldn't have ordered another. As a Nigerian, I reallyyyyy wanted to like this spot but there were just too many red flags. For the prices on the menu, you would think they'd at least have semi-decent service. I would give them 0 stars except for the fact that the staff was super nice, and Mr. Saxophone was killing it! Pls give your money to a corporation that will actually treat you well. read more
