I actually had never been in a Trader Joe's until checking out my new neighborhood and finding I had one a block away. It's not that we don't have them in Texas. Just that I've never been around one when I had a reason to go in.
I liked what I saw when I went in. Their biggest business must be in frozen foods, as that takes up more space than anything else and they put it in the middle of the store. I guess everyone else knows that already. The whole store is very neat and spotless, and most of everything looks like it might be good (not just the frozen things.) When there's a price to compare, Trader Joe's comes out ahead (99 cents for a pound of good spaghetti is a good deal, so are the canned tomatoes for the sauce you'll need to make to go with it.)
The store is small, so it's not bewildering like supermarkets can be (and if you think supermarkets are big here, you should see some of the ones we have back home.) There's a small produce department, but I only buy things there in a pinch. All Trader Joes' probably have the same layout, and everyone probably knows it by now, so I won't waste time telling y'all that there's a good dairy case and some very inexpensive wine.
Although I said everything looks good, a lot of it isn't as good as it looks once you've gotten it home. They go very heavy on garlic and lemon, so a lot of what you get tastes the same. (The hummus and the smoked salmon dip taste way too much alike, and that can't be right.) The frozen things are convenient and affordable, but I haven't found anything I can recommend outright. (Again, a lot of it tastes the same.)
There are some things I can recommend. They do very well with some of their baked goods. I really like the French breads just off to the right when you come in, and I've had a loaf of cinnamon raisin bread in the house ever since I discovered it. Some of the cookies are worth trying, too (some aren't): if you like sweet, give the maple creams and "cookie butter" ones a go. The cookie part of the "cookie butter" ones even tastes like it was baked with plenty of real butter.
A buddy turned me on to the Greek yogurt (not the nonfat kind.) I always keep a couple in the refrigerator.
The people working in the store are always smiling, friendly and helpful. I don't usually drive here, but I've done it often enough to know that it's a mighty hazardous parking lot they've got. I've seen stunt drivers drive less recklessly than some people do in that garage.
So now I've been to Trader Joe's. I probably wouldn't go in as often as I do if it weren't a block from where I live, but, since it is a block away, I take advantage of it a lot. read more
