Oh wow, Vallarta Supermarkets has become my go-to place to shop, eat, and drink! I happen to be in the Pasadena area and dropped by to check out their La Cocina (The Kitchen). I wanted to try their tacos, rice, and beans which I did... very good by the way. Besides that, I so desired to seek out their ceviche selection which I did as well. I got to try 5 different ceviches... spicy fish, spicy shrimp, shrimp + avocado + mango (non-spicy), butterfly shrimp (aguachile), and spicy shrimp (aguachile rojo). They also have non-spicy fish and shrimp ceviches. Thanks Scott for the free samples! I loved the citrus taste of the spicy shrimp and shrimp + avocado + mango! I think they need to make a spicy version of the latter or combine it with spicy shrimp. Just my 2 cents! I ended up with about half a pound of each ceviche flavor. After taking my first bite, I said to myself, "I should have gotten 1 to 2 lbs of each instead especially when it was on sale for $9.99 per lb." I won't make that same mistake next time LOL. During my visit, I was very impressed with the different sections of the store starting with La Cocina a La Panadería (Bakery) a La Verdulería (Produce) a La Pescadería (Seafood (ceviches made fresh daily is here)) a La Cremeria (Dairy). They even have the guacamole and aguas frescas made to order stations. How cool is that! Store was bright and clean. Aisles were organized and well stocked. Mexican food and groceries selections are massive. Lots of the foods are freshly made in-house daily. Prices are very reasonable. They have inside and outside dining space for customers to sit and eat. Free parking is plenty. Staff was super friendly and nice. I will definitely be visiting Vallarta again soon!

I LOVE Vallarta! They have an excellent selection of Mexican food and groceries, and staff are always helpful and kind. All food is made in-house and fresh, and service has always been delightful and fast. Food I tried and loved are their pastries (they have a $5 for 5 deal last time I came in), tamales, and enchiladas. Drinks I loved have been their horchata and champurrado (perfect for the cold weather and their large size is huge!) I also buy the Mexican candies, snacks, and drink mixes when I get a chance. I will definitely be visiting again soon!

Tamale Cart

I read somewhere that this is one of the go to places for tamales! Wow! I didn't have any expectations and was blown away by how awesome this market it! I've driven by so many times, now I'm going to put it in my regular rotation! First, I was so impressed with the guacamole station! It is like custom order on steroids! Anything you like on your guacamole, you can get it! Salsa, cilantro, onions, jalapeños, they'll make it your way! The ceviche station was equally impressive. I saw two ladies holding their $12 to go cups. It reminded me of the dinner scene from Beetlejuice, the shrimp on top were gigantic!! And no longer do I hear the familiar crowing and little bell ringing of a cart down the neighborhood announcing "TAMALES! Tamales! Tamales!" Gone is the lady who used to sell them out of the flatbed truck out of an igloo cooler in the parking lot of the 99 cent store (which is also gone). I was so happy to make my selection from the indoor tamale cart, one side is savory, the other is sweet. If you are inclined to make your own, no problem, there's a whole section dedicated to masa and hominy. Was in a hurry, but will be back to explore. Only got a glimpse of all the saint candles for $2.50. I might need the large Virgin de Guadalupe one for $10. Opted for self check out. Very convenient!

This is the burned quesadilla from Vallarta Market in Pasadena, Fair Oaks

I stopped by the Pasadena Fairoaks location for lunch. I ordered a quesadilla with lengua, thinking I would try something from my childhood. First it took forever, longer than 20 mins. to get my order. There was no one ahead of me, and there were two cooks at the grill. When I finally got home, opened the container, I noticed and smelled my quesadilla was burned and had a burned taste. I did eat the lettuce, tomatoes, and crema on top and tried to eat the unburned sections but it was too much work. Now I wonder why would these two cooks would serve a customer burned food. They put it on the grill, they turned it over, and then they served it in a take out container. Shame on them! Never again, my childhood memories will just have to wait till I visit the mother country. Perhaps the manager will reach out, but slim chance.

Love stopping here for a large aguas Fresca $4.99 and a three taco meal )comes with sides of you like. I typically just get the tacos. They are a great size. Tortilla shells are handmade. Meat perfect seasoned. And come with two salsas. Service is welcoming, efficient and always a pleasure to visit. Ambiance is your typical grocery experience.

Non-service dogs (off leash) dogs at market. Second one I've seen.

I hate to do this because I think Vallartas is a great market with a lot of variety and good customer service BUT the thing with the dogs in L.A. is getting out of control, and as consumers/patrons we have to start speaking up. This is the second time I see an off leash dog at this Vallartas. I love dogs an am a dog owner myself but a market is not a place for dogs. Please Vallartas start enforcing the California Retail Food code.

Vallarta Supermarket is a pretty popular supermarket where they make tortillas and bakery items, have a butcher, stations for cheese, Ceviche, sushi, chicharron, floral and so much more. The one thing I noticed...I didn't see or hear staff greeting customers or asking customers if they needed help. They would just walk by or staff would just be talking with each other.

Chips that are as thick as a brick! Hard too.

I purchased some salsa and premium tortilla chips from Vallarta as I was headed to the Hollywood Bowl for a summer concert. Omg! These chips are the absolute WORST! they're hard and thick,I almost broke my tooth off. My husband had to spit it out because of how thick and chunky the chips are. I believe they make them in house. Buyers beware! You will run the risk of choking or chipping your tooth with their tortilla chips. The birds won't even eat them.

Pieces of hard plastic.

I love to come here because this is the closest Mexican market for me. I work in Pasadena and I come here straight from work. If I want to do a taco night or want some ceviche. Last night I went to pick up some ceviche and Carne Asad taco meat. Already marinated from the meat department. I was cooking it and when it was almost fully cooked I found some white pieces of foreign material. Thinking it's the fresh onions in it. Come to my surprise when I picked it up to examine it. It was pieces of white hard plastic. Not sure what it was I found a couple of more pieces. Imagine if I didn't see it while eating it. I would have either choked or broke a tooth or something. I called the store took me many calls before someone tried to contact me. Talked to the store Manager. Raul said he apologizes and very sorry that happened. He said to come to the store with the receipt and the stuff I found and he will refund me for the product. I went in today he wasn't there. Talked to an employee. Susana and she help me get my money back for the product. This is not cool I work the food industry and is aware of safety practices and healthy food handling. I hope there wasn't more in the meat and bigger pieces because it would be a problem. Just wanted to let everyone know and Management aware of what's going on in the meat department.

Does Vallarta market have whole fresh red snapper(huachinango) ? What about Pescado Zarandeado? Chapulines?

I want to know if you can order me a whole pig between 30 and forty lbs?

I would call the meat Dept and ask.

Dear Pasadena Public Health Department Environmental Health Division,…read more I am writing to formally report a serious health code violation and unsanitary conditions observed at Ralphs Grocery Store, located at 160 N. Lake Ave., Pasadena, CA 91101. Incident Details * Date of Observation: Monday, July 27, 2026 * Time of Observation: Approximately 3:00 PM * Location Inside Store: Self-serve bagel and bread display cabinet Description of the Violation The self-serve bagel and bread display case was teeming with flies. Numerous insects were actively flying inside the cabinet and crawling directly all over the uncovered food products. I have captured clear video evidence documenting this infestation, which is available upon request for your investigation. Public Health Risks and Concerns This environment poses an immediate and severe health risk to consumers for several critical reasons: * Pathogen Transmission: Flies carry over 100 dangerous pathogens. They easily transfer hazardous bacteria such as Salmonella, E. coli, Listeria, and Shigella from external waste directly onto the food surfaces. * Direct Contamination: Because flies liquefy solid food, they regurgitate digestive enzymes and defecate on the bakery items. This leaves live bacteria and viruses behind. * Ready-to-Eat Hazards: These items are sold as ready-to-eat foods. Consumers eat them without cooking or heating them first, meaning there is no kill-step to destroy the transferred pathogens. This creates a high probability of foodborne illness. * Prolonged Exposure: The enclosed nature of the display cabinet traps the flies inside, leading to a high concentration of continuous contamination on the food. This active infestation indicates a critical failure in store sanitation, inadequate pest control management, and a clear violation of California retail food safety codes. Please initiate a health inspection of this facility as soon as possible to address this hazard and protect the public. Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter.

Gary is always very personable and delivers top notch service. Over in the deli section, not only is the service stellar but they have a very wide variety of product. Cheeses, deli meats, dips, salads.....an excellent selection. This is a great community grocery store and I highly recommend it for your grocery needs, especially if you're on a budget!

But the elderly can't do that so it's why the lines are so long. Now here is the kicker. At the end of the checking line is a manager ...sometimes 2. A man and a woman. They are observing the long lines...counting something...just observing. It would help if THEY just go to the end of a long line and start bagging! See, that would be cool! You see you guys have not scheduled any baggers and the lines are so long they are down the aisles .. and you are just standing there? Of course they may say, well that's not my job. But that's the mentality that keeps things moving slow. It would be so nice if people just did what it takes to keep things moving. Either hire enough people OR get in there and start bagging! I remember back in the days there was a bagger at the end of each checkout aisle. A bagger and a casher! Those days are gone ...and most stores now see if they can get away with overworking the checker! Next thing you know they install self check outs! Rather than hire people and keep a system of people working they just get rid of people and have 1 person observing (like these managers were doing). What a world we are moving towards. But anyways that's what you see. I wish they would just hire bag boys and go back to the good ol days.

This was sliced and stored in the dessert refrigerator section where all the take out foods were located. Loads of coconut flavor with toasted coconut flakes! After each bite, there is a strong coconut flavor, yet you can taste the coconut essence in it versus real coconut flavor too, which detracts from the coconut cake eating experience. Lol. The cream is not as sweet as the cake. The cake itself is denser and had a wet texture versus a fluffy cake texture. That can be a big minus for those who are looking for that fluffy cake texture. Overall it is sweet, but not super sweet. The filling was coconut milk, but it tasted like condensed milk with coconut flavor added to it. Liked the flavor of the filling. It was not as sweet as expected either. The addition of toasted coconut flakes was delish. It really made everything taste better. This cake is still sweeter than Erewhon's Carrot Cake. I haven't had the best coconut cake, so I have nothing to compare this cake to, but I think anyone craving a coconut cake may enjoy this! EREWHON CARROT CAKE Organic ingredients used. One thing that was different was they used almond meal instead of all purpose flour. So the texture is different. It is a dense cake, as expected, but also like the coconut cake it is a wet cake too. Not a cake texture. The flavor is strong! You've got brown sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg at the first bite. Then the textures and flavors of the carrots, walnuts, and golden raisins and then the cream cheese. Outer layers were coated with chopped walnuts so there was more crunchiness and nutty flavor with each bite! The flavor is reminded me of Fall! A very warm-flavored Fall cake! Loved this more than the coconut cake, as the coconut cake is a one dimensional flavor, but the carrot cake had layers of Fall flavors! Cream cheese was not overly sweet with a hint of cream cheese tang. For those who crave carrot cake, this would be a good alternative when you don't know where to find a decent carrot cake. I would get this again! EREWHON ORGANIC POTATO CHIPS TRUFFLE These chips were delicious! It was thin like Lay's potato chips. The chips were a bit on the smaller side and some were bunched up together in clumps. But that's even more fun to eat! Strong black truffle flavor and saltiness. Would buy again! GIADZY NODI MARINI This is a pasta brand from chef Giada DeLaurentiis. Ordered from her website before she started selling her Giadzy pasta brands at Erewhon! It is on the pricier side, but the Nodi Marini is my favorite pasta from her pasta collection! This is generally called a Vesuvio pasta, a pasta from Campania. Delicious however you cook it! You can probably find this pasta shape from other well known Italian brands as well. TUMERIC CRUSH (Orange juice, carrot juice, pineapple, mango, tumeric, ginger, lemon, beet juice, camu camu) Got this smoothie with a shot of organic coconut oil. Wanted to try this and I thought this was a good healthy option. Served in a 20oz plastic cup, this was a large-sized smoothie! The smoothie tasted like fresh ginger, orange and tumeric. But the overall flavor was of strong freshly ground ginger. Very potent! Smoothie was icy cold too! There was sweetness in it from the other fruit juices in it. I did enjoy it and will get it again. Only downside was the wait time for one smoothie took a long time to make! CUSTOMER SERVICE Every time I'm here the customer service has been great! Staff were nice and helpful. PARKING Love that they have their own free parking lot! It can get crowded during the weekends (of course), but overall you can find parking here otherwise.

Funny, they always checked MY details. It gets worse: I was then expected to wait until the other person returned with my groceries. Who would do this? I asked for a refund and left. Any professional store would have apologized and offered to quickly re-shop the order while I waited. Not this Vons! I called back and spoke with the manager on duty, who treated the situation very casually, completely unbothered. So I'm finished dealing with Vons for pick-up and delivery.
