Best thing here is the coffee. Do NOT get a breakfast sandwich. We ordered two. One was ice cold. The order was completely flat and greasy. Pastries are ok but nothing special. It's a cash only business and the atmosphere is very political. I don't need a side of your beliefs with my breakfast. Best donuts in the Merrimack Valley. There are NO bad choices so the rest is personal taste. I love the blueberry cake, apple fritter, and the old fashioned. Top Donut doesn't skimp on glaze, fillings, sprinkles, frosting, etc on any of the donuts. The breakfast sandwhi he's are very good despite being given a final nuking in the microwave before serving. Another great local chain. Donuts are fantastic. Tea is excellent and the coffee is great too. The bagels are a bit lacking vs other local options (Java's Brewin comes to mind). These are all cash only but usually have an ATM inside. This location is the very best place for AM people-watching. Absolutely THE best chain coffee joint in the area. Leaps and bounds over Dunkin Donuts, and still better than Honey Dew (though they're 2nd in my book). Not comparing them to small independent coffee shops though. Anyway, the coffee is pretty good, better than the other chains I mentioned, and they usually get my order spot-on. They have the most delicious pastry selection and donuts around (MUCH better than the others!). Even their breakfast sandwiches are better than the other chains... while it's still fast food breakfast, they use more eggs and more cheese. And they don't charge more. Sweet. One drawback is that they DO NOT accept cards... CASH ONLY. Though they do have an ATM inside so that makes it easier. Check them out before you resort to Dunks. read more

The donuts here are AMAZING. The fist time I stumbled upon this place was during the ice storm of 2008, I was frantically looking for a tasty breakfast and a hot cup of coffee. Great donut shop just across the bridge from the Spinners' stadium. Much better selection than DD, and so much easier to get in and out of. The iced coffee is great, and still tastes like coffee (rather than sweet creamer) even with cream and sugar. This place has been a Mainstay in Lowell for decades. However, it looks like the owners don't care about the customers anymore. The kids who work there are obviously untrained, will give you the wrong order, and don't really care when they get it right. At what point does Boston cream sound like Maple frosted? With Fox News on the TV 24 hours a day, the owners obviously don't care what the customers think. I can pass this up for other local places in the area. I get drive-thru iced coffee here regularly, but had never gone inside until recently. It was a life changing moment. I bought some squares, a raspberry and a fig. They each weigh about a pound. (maybe a bit less, but they are enormous.) I served them on a dessert platter along with other sweets from another bakery and cut the squares into 4 triangles each so everyone could try a bit of each thing. Since then I have gone in to buy treats for my student staff. I have started something truly addicting. They have real downhome old fashioned donuts and pastries. Hardcore indeed. Amazingly fresh and old school glazed donuts, blueberry crullers (!) and all manner of frosted, jimmie covered, and creme filled goodies. I kind of wish I had never gone in. I conduct a lot of field work in Lowell and will go out of my way to head over to Top Donut for a coffee break. The various contractors I oversee and work with agree. Wayyyy better than DD. Baked goods are fresher and humongous compared to the ever-shrinking donuts at DD (I got two plain old-fashioned donuts at a DD last week in Franklin and they were sized more like tiddly-winks than donuts!). The place is CLEAN unlike many DDs and you won't gag when you use the locked bathroom (get the key at the counter). Staff is friendly and polite, too. read more

I ordered coffee with black stuff in it. It's probably pepper. Had to come back and have it re-made. Still didn't taste right. And it took almost 2 minutes with 3 people around making my coffee. Wonder what they do to people's orders when they have to re-make them. Gross. read more

Top Donut is very close to just that. Other than a few basic donuts that rated okay, all others were above average leaning toward decadent. Some of the best include French Cruller, Jelly and Boston Creme. Looking forward to eating some of their other menu items. read more

I went there today, and was suprised to find out that they were still open - since it seems that so many businesses in MASS. don't even open on Sunday and if they are they are shut down by 2 p.m. It is a large, stand alone shop right on a busy corner. As you enter the parking lot you have the choice of parking and walking in or using the drive-thru, I parked and walked in so I could see what they had left to sell. I was afraid that being around 2 p.m. there wouldn't be a large selection, I was wrong. The counter with the donuts is straight ahead and they had old fashioned, honey dipped, chocolate glazed, cruellers, french cruellers, coconut, cinnamon rolls, butternut, and the list goes on - there were at least a dozen varieties! Behind the counter they had a smaller selection of muffins and bagesl, and from a sign outside I saw that they make breakfast sandwiches. I am sure if I was earlier or there during a weekday morning the place must be crazy! I have been craving a donut for weeks and haven't had one in over a year, so I was excited to find a local donut shop. I kept my choices to the basics - and even then it was hard - I had a honey dip, an old fashion and a chocolate cake donut. I wanted to also try the coconut, butternut, chocolate glazed, etc... I knew that the more I bought the more I would eat. From first glance the donuts looked like a well made product. They are similar in size to that of dunkin donuts, which is nice, since I like to eat a variety of donuts and if they are too big i could only eat one or two. I left with my donuts and wanted to wait until I got home, but I knew better. I broke open the bag as I found my through Lowell trying to head back home. My hand found the honey dip, first, and I took a quick bite and put the donut back in the bag in hopes of waiting before the next bite. The honey dip was light and fluffy, and slightly sweet. It was a very soft and pillowy bite - I prefer that there be a bit more of a bite to the outer crust or shell of the donut, but I did enjoy the honey dip. It represented any honey dip in its basic sense. I reached my hand back into the bag and pulled out the chocolate cake donut. I have loved this type of donut since I was a child and on Sunday mornings my Dad would arrive home with Dunkin Donuts - such a good time! Top Donut's version is good, but was different from what I am used to so to be fair I won't compare and simply tell you what the donut is like. There is a small amount of icing on the outside and as you bite into to it you will find it to be a soft, cakey and moist. The flavor of it was mild, but it was the texture that made this an enjoyable experience. Finally, as my craving for these donuts grew I dove back into the bag one final time and pulled out my all time favorite - the old fashion. I love this type of donut because of the texture of the donut - it is soft, rich and even has a little bite. Top Donut makes a really good old fashion donut - it has a nice crackly top, a good amount of icing; and, once you bite into this donut you will find it to be a rich and moist donut that has all you need in a donut. The best part of all of this is that it only costs a little over $2 for all three donuts - a very inexpensive indulgence - amazing! read more

I am so glad I found this place. On my very first trip to Lowell five years ago, while looking for an apartment, I stumbled across Top Donut and decided to stop in for a guilty pleasure. My eyes were immediately drawn to the apple fritters: that flat denser variety, fried to a crispy golden brown, with lots of crevices to hold a perfectly even layer of glaze. My taste buds were not disappointed - it was as delicious as it looked, as were the other donuts I tried that day and have tried since. My favorites are the apple fritter, Boston cream (round or eclair shape), honey cruller and sour cream glazed (which they call an old-fashioned). It's always a treat to stop by there and I was glad to find out they have one other location in Lowell and two locations in Lawrence. read more

I've driven by Top Donut countless times and never stopped. It's a good thing because my donut consumption would be through the roof! We made the short jaunt last weekend for a Sunday treat and we were not disappointed. I was taken aback by the frosted little treasures that were on display in glass cases. After much deliberation I decided on the chocolate coconut and my boyfriend had the maple-frosted old fashion. We rushed home with our goods, brewed up some coffee, and began the feast. The donuts were fresh and quite flavorful. I must admit, I had donut-envy. The maple-frosted old fashion donut was heavenly. Not overly sweet and it tasted like authentic maple - not like a chemical-like, generic flavor. Next time I'm craving a donut I'll be making the trek to Top Donut. Sorry Dunks. read more

The coffee tasted great but due to the customer service I won't be back. And it wasn't even towards me. My jelly donut was filled with watered down jelly...of it seemed as if it was...sooo messy!the bacon egg and cheese is 10x worst than Dunkin (and I hate DD) the ice coffee was very good!
