This is my second time ordering from here, and the second time I ordered a donut. TBH this review is mostly to remind myself that the donuts here are NOT the light, airy type of donut I prefer and that I should not order donuts here again. If you like heavy, thick donuts with an obvious taste of the oil they were fried in, you will love their donuts. Unfortunately, it's sitting in my stomach like a rock and that's not an ideal feeling at breakfast time. Their apple fritter is dense and not filled with apples the way most are. It was more of an apple-infused batter, but I prefer the middle to have the pie filling. I'm sure there are people who love this style donut and if so, go here and grab yo self one! I've been going to top donut since I was very young. It is such a staple on a Sunday morning before watching football. I took my partner there for the first time and he absolutely adored the donuts and all honesty, -I am not a sweet lover. I'm not a fan of donuts at all, but other donut places like Dunkin' Donuts, doesn't compare at all to the quality and taste of Top. The store itself is clean and looks like a small bakery. The service is extremely fast. The workers are always attentive. If anything there's at least two things that you must try from here ,the first being the marshmallow donut which has a decadent vanilla cream in the middle covered by a flaky yet rich, glazed donut. The second would be the apple fritter . Again,- I'm not a fan of a lot of sweet foods especially anything apple flavored, but it has such a faint taste of fresh apple. it tastes like an upgraded version of a fried dough mixed with apple pie. This was my first time trying Top Donut as it's a little far from my home, and I never really pass by this part of Lowell much. I told the worker it was my first time here and she kindly suggested me drinks and showed me a variety of flavors. Because Dunkins is the closest to me, I usually get an iced coffee with French vanilla swirl and mocha swirl, so I wanted to see what the difference was over here. She told me the French vanilla was brewed, so that's definitely a difference. I got a French vanilla iced coffee with mocha and regular cream and sugar. To my surprise, it's not overly sweet at all, contrary to how I look at Dunkin customers who get 20 pumps of swirl knowing how sweet it is. There's no crazy after taste, the coffee is very smooth. If I ever (and I probably won't) try drinking coffee black, I would get it here. The donuts are so fresh and the perfect amount of sweetness. Glazed donuts are like a staple, and theirs is the best so far. It's huge, but fluffy and soft, and the amount of glaze is just right, compared to Donut Shack's overly sweet glaze. And you can tell it's freshly made everyday because of that slight taste of oil, unlike Dunkin' Donuts manufactured taste of their donuts. The shop is big enough for a bunch of folks to just hangout and sip on coffee and nibble on their donuts. Feels very homey on the inside. In conclusion, I'm going to have to travel the extra mile to get coffee next time! read more

Drove here after seeing the local Dunkin Donuts had a line out to the street for it. The drive thru only had me and one car behind me around 10:15 am ion a Saturday. Service was quick, $8 for half dozen donuts. Donuts were a hefty size and delicious. I also got a Vietnamese coffee which a good Vietnamese coffee just brings me back to life. My only wish is that they listed all their flavors outside at the drive thru - but I can't complain as the ones I randomly listed on the top of my head were available: jelly, boston cream, blueberry, chocolate frosted with sprinkles, apple fritter, and plain glazed. Definitely 10x better than Dunks and plus you'll be supporting a local business. read more

Hubby brought home a box of six donuts for us to try. I LOVE lemon donuts, so I was excited to try this one. The lemon donut was actually very tasty. I also tried the jelly filled donut. That one wasn't as good. Normally, I like a lot of jelly, but this one just had too much, and the jelly was VERY sweet. I feel like it needed something in the jelly to counteract the sweetness. I took one bite and couldn't finish. Hubby also bought a plain glazed, a boston creme, a cruller, and a chocolate with sprinkles. He enjoyed the rest of them. After seeing so many pictures of donuts from all over on Yelp, I suddenly had my own "mmmm donuts" moment, exactly like Homer, so here we are at Top Donut for some yummy goodness! Donuts: Honey Glazed Donuts- Fluffy and sweet. I haven't had one of these in awhile so we devoured it within a minute! Apple Fritters- Popped these bad boys in the microwave for 15 sec and whoa baby! Tender, crisp and fruity. Strawberry Frosted Donut- I solely picked this because our half-a-dozen looks lame without a little color. It was okay but I wouldn't get it again. Boston Creme Donut- Pillow-soft texture with vanilla filling and chocolate frosting was delightful. Blueberry Flavored Coffee- My friend was so pleased with this drink. I'm not a coffee person at all but he made me try it out and I have to agree, it was pretty smooth and tasty. Hot Chocolate- It fulfilled my chocolate cravings. This is one of several locations of a small local Cambodian family-owned donut chain. As a previous review mentioned, this type of establishment is quite common in California, and I've never seen it on the East Coast before myself. This shop offers take-out, dine-in and drive-thru. The variety of donuts is small compared to what you'll see in California. They have just basics, such as chocolate dip, Boston cream, eclairs, maple, etc. No really fancy colorful icing styles. However - the quality is absolutely solid. Cambodian-American donuts have a less "rich" taste than typical American places, so it's easier to eat several at a time if you want to sample more. You don't feel as diabetic after eating these. I'm happy that they didn't charge tax either, even despite me paying with credit card. I hope Top Donut can expand beyond the Lowell area, but I totally understand if the owner is just trying to keep things small & local for now. These Mom & Pop businesses are a must-visit! read more

Before I start, there's something I've got to get off my chest: Top Donut makes the best apple fritter I've had anywhere, ever. It's the richest, greasiest, most glazed donut-related object I've swallowed, an all-hands-on-deck, nutrition-be-damned celebration of everything that's right about fried dough in all its forms. That said, here's my actual review: If you found it on any street corner in Los Angeles, Top Donut would be utterly unremarkable. It's the classic California donut experience, from the beautiful glaze-mongering, Dunkin-defying butterflied shape of their old-fashioned donuts (which you can get glazed, chocolate frosted, or maple frosted, in true West Coast fashion) to the cheery, strawberry and chocolate-frosted raised offerings. Most of the time, when I'm there, there are even, in the truest Californian style, remarkably friendly ladies behind the counter talking among themselves in Vietnamese. And, of course, there's that ungodly apple fritter, which nobody else back East has even come close to approximating. The thing that makes Top astonishing, and which earns it five stars, is that it's nowhere near the Golden State. It's in Lowell, which is about as far from California as you can get, both literally and figuratively. All here for one thing, the great equalizer that brings people together...donuts. I love the jelly donuts and especially the coconut ones. Reasonably priced. So is the coffee. Nothing dressed up or fancy...just donuts. For me, though, I'll always stop here when in Lowell. It used to be a regular stop when I visited a friend who has since passed on. We drive way out of our way to get donuts here. It's not a boutique donut shop, it's a REAL donut shop. It smells like coffee and long forgotten dreams, but you can drown your sorrows in some amazing glazed selections, a delicious Boston cream, scrumptious jellies, and apple fritters you'd get in a knife fight over (a useless plastic knife, but still ... they're great.) Cash only (I'm 99% sure?), so keep that in mind, but they have an ATM right in there, so you have no excuse. The often brash/very authentic customer service is just part of the ambiance. It's a little tricky to maneuver in and out of (considering the abundance of traffic on Aiken Ave), but you'll be happy you did. Driving into the lot, you'll notice plenty of parking for customers. It's adjacent to the parking for the local playground/baseball park/basketball grounds. I've come to this location for YEARS. There are a number of things that Top Donut is known for.. and each one is delicious and freshly baked. My absolute favorite baked goods are the blueberry muffins (always moist and scrumptious) and the chocolate coconut donuts (crispy and flaky on the outside, soft and chewy on the inside). The Irish Creme that's served at each Top Donut location is also really good- that is if you like your coffee extremely sweet (like I do). Moreover, the breakfast sandwiches are generously sized and, although they get a final nuking in the microwave, are great for the price you pay.
