Donut Shack in Lowell is an absolute hidden gem and I am still thinking about these donuts. First, a heads up: this place is not easy to find. They share a door with a barbershop and the storefront is tiny. From what I understand, they mostly sell wholesale to other restaurants, but they open up a small window of sales to walk-in customers. When they are sold out, they are done for the day, so get there early! Now for the donuts. Delicious, delicate, and honestly some of the best I have ever had. These are not your average gas station donuts. You can taste the care and craftsmanship in every bite. But what really blew me away was the hospitality. I had already picked out 8 donuts when I was told it was cash only. I had none on me, but offered to run out and come back if she could hold my box. Without hesitation, she handed me the box and told me to pay whenever I could. She was completely serious. That kind of trust and generosity is rare and it genuinely made my day. I cannot say enough good things about Donut Shack!! My husband and I have been going here for years and it is still as amazing as it was the first time. Their donuts aren't crazy flavors they are classics and I wouldn't ask for anything else. Big, fluffy, and delicious. Okay, first, I'm a donut connoisseur and snob and will say their donuts are great! I can't give more stars for lack of options for payment (especially in this day and age.) It's CASH ONLY and the donuts here are not inexpensive! This shop is located across the street from a liquor store that happens to have an ATM, so that's a tip you might like to know. The service was a little strange. The young lady helping us seemed confused and inattentive when we told her what donuts we wanted. We had to repeat them multiple times. If you can get past the dated messy storefront, you'll be rewarded with fresh, delicious donuts. I had a Boston Cream and a Marshmallow filled. Both were super fresh, the donut was pillow soft, and the chocolate on the Boston Cream was thick and super chocolaty. These are the types of donuts you have to eat right away. They're not full of preservatives made to be shipped all over the state. These aren't the processed hockey pucks you find elsewhere. I've made a couple of 60 miles one way trips on a early Saturday morning, this is how real donuts and coffee rolls should be. You can freeze the old fashioned donuts and coffee rolls (would not suggest w/any others as donuts in general are oily). Here is the honest truth from a real Donut fan. The Donut Shack is a very small donut place in Lowell, MA. The word "shack" is very appropriate, as it implies this place is a little rough around the edges, and it is, but I'm not complaining about it. That is the character of the area and its people. The Donut Shack doesn't offer you a vast selection like other donut shops. You will not find Old-Fashioned, Crawlers, Bars or other strange shapes. They simply offer you what they have to offer; and that is a basic assortment of premium tasting donuts (approx. 20 different kinds). Don't panic if the trays look bare when you walk in, they usually have more in the back. Afterall this is a "shack" remember - space is limited! Donut Shack seems to also specialize in filled donuts, but not in the traditional sense. They serve them like a stuffed clam shell and really give you your money's worth of fillings. My in-laws claim their Marshmallow filled donuts are the best around. They also have Lemon, Apple, and Chocolate Cream filled too. You may like a particular donut from a specific shop, but when it comes to your basic "Honey-Dipped" or "Glaze Raised" donut, theirs is the BEST I HAVE EVER HAD and beats out EVERYONE, period (don't even suggest another shop nearby, I have tried those too - and the DS still beats them!) I have tried a lot of donuts from California to New York and to this day, every time I bring them into work, people still go crazy for them. Lastly, don't judge the donuts by their appearance. Their donuts are a bit fluffier than most, and need to be jammed into the box sometimes. That may hinder the presentation, but it's still about taste above all - and the Donut Shack tastes all-right by me. Went on a Wednesday at 8:40am. No lines but low supply. Was my first time so basically tried an assortment. You get a price break for 6 and also at 9. Donuts were great especially the filled. Coffee roll is a must try. Boston cream we would have liked more filling but still good. Opens nice and early for those days when you want to brown nose and bring in a bunch of donuts for the office, takes cash only, and is worth every penny. Their raised donuts are soft and delicious, their marshmallow filled donuts are practically legendary in the area, and Erik, the owner, is as sweet as the donuts he makes and has made a fresh donut specially requested many a time when he hasn't had them available. The inside of the shop is, really, a shack. Small, not a ton of seating, but there is tons of street parking near the shop and it's easy to spot from the sign. Still ordered three donuts because they were excited to get their donuts. My son had picked a chocolate sprinkle donut, texture was dry and think. My daughter picked a chocolate glazed donut, big and thick donut. Not moist whatsoever. Didn't care for it. I ordered a glazed donut, it was okay. Better than the other two. It is cash only. Parking is pretty non existent. I wouldn't go back there. Upon leaving, we said bye, and she didn't even acknowledge us. Also, the donut shop looks very ghetto and outdated. This place is so tiny, the entrance area is smaller than my apartment bedroom. It is very cozy however, and the staff is usually super energetic and friendly. My first time there I got six donuts and then the coffee roll for free for a first visit. Final price $6.50!! That blew me away. You cannot beat that price. The donuts are big as well. There best seller is the raspberry and marshmallow filled and I can see why it was awesome. I love how they do not skimp on the filling like other places. The first bite in and the filling was oozing out it was so packed in. I love that. I also really liked their boston cream covered in coconut a nice unique touch. They make different donuts daily so each day you could see something new. I read you should get their early so I arrived right when they opened at 5:00 am. None of the donuts were even out yet. So between 5:30 am and 6:00 is optimal to ensure all the donuts are still available. Overall, price is unbeatable, staff is friendly, and donuts are amazing. A must visit if you like donuts. I got the marshmello filled donut but it was super sweet and you can taste the sugar granules in the marshmello filling (not sure if that's how it's supposed to be). The donuts are good, but I was really hoping the donuts would be more light and pillowy. Extra star for amazing packaging. My boyfriend had a hankering for doughnuts while we're here visiting my grandmother in North Chelmsford for the holidays, and we thin-blooded Angelinos dared to brave the inhospitable Massachusetts snow and 4 degree weather in search of fluffy, fried deliciousness. Plus, I thought it would be remiss of me not to eat a Boston cream doughnut when I'm so close to Boston. Donut Shack is a small mom and pop establishment with plenty of street parking out front. Donuts are sold on a first-come, first-served basis and when they run out for the day, that's it. Even though we arrived after 10am on a Saturday morning, they still had a nice selection to choose from. We got a dozen doughnuts for an affordable $10 even, and the owner was kind enough to even throw in an apple turnover and morning glory muffin for free when he found out it was our first time there! He said he normally he gives coffee rolls to first-time patrons, but they were already out for the day. All the doughnuts were fresh, large, and delicious. The cake doughnuts are moist and with a crunchy shell and the yeast doughnuts have an airy crumb with a lightly crisp exterior. My favorite doughnuts were the chocolate glazed crueller (a super crunchy cake twist), the honey dip (classic yeast ring with a honey glaze), the raspberry jelly-filled (moderately sweet but high on the fresh berry flavor), and the Boston cream. We also tried the marshmallow-filled, but I found the cream to be extremely sweet and almost similar in texture and flavor to vanilla cake frosting. Not my preference, but the quality is still superb. Donut Shack's Boston cream is, without a doubt, the best doughnut I have ever had in my life. The chocolate frosting isn't overly sweet and has a deep chocolate flavor, and the thick, luscious custard was only mildly sweetened but present in abundance. I love anything with custard, and Donut Shack's custard simply blows everything else out of the water. I savored each bite of the Boston cream and it somehow magically got tastier the more I ate - it never once became cloying. I finished eating it two hours ago and I'm still sitting around with a goofy smile on my face as I think about it. My one regret right now is that I live in Los Angeles and will soon be over 3000 miles away from Donut Shack. If you are anywhere remotely close to Boston, I highly recommend stopping by Donut Shack. The owners are friendly and fry up some phenomenal doughnuts! read more
