Got the veggie sub and by far the best sub ever! Service is rather quickly and customer service is excellent! Can't wait to go back!

These guys are usually very friendly, even when busy. These aren't life changing sandwiches, but how many are? The Roast Beef and Avocado is actually awesome. The Nada Chicken is a pretty tasty meat substitute. I'm not sure if it's "What I Love About Austin," but these guys deliver good product at reasonable price when I need it. read more

The sandwiches arent bad as long as you dont mind paying $6 for a sandwich with no chips or drink. I knew that going in and I like Thunderclound. I guess I should have stopped at the location closer to my house on congress, instead i stopped at this one because its closer to work. Im waiting patiently to be served by anyone. When a counter spot opens up I take it thinking, yey, its my turn. Apparently the older gentlemen behind the counter didnt like my eagerness to approach the counter. So he ignores me. The next person in line gets called up to another line and her sandwich is started. Im obviously looking at the clock and doing the "please hurry, im late!" dance and this guys is intentionally rude and proceeds to ring up everyone else's order before he even looks in my direction. Another worker came over and finally asked me for my order. She was fast and tried to be polite but still not very pleasant. I walked out of there annoyed. To you, grouchy old man with nasty beard and an attitude - Im so sorry that you didnt become the rock star, lawyer, superhero, or scientist that you originally intended to be in life but , i say either accept your lot in life and service people with a smile or find an online job somewhere where interaction with people is kept to a minimum. Has it really become acceptable to treat the people you serve so poorly, then point out the tip line on the credit card receipt? WOW! Try smiling, just one of the employees should be pretending to like thier job. I guess i just dont think it's hip to be snarky and rude to your guests. read more

I've been grabbing lunch at this location a couple of times per week for nearly three years; it's close to my office and the food is always great. I order online, and their system tells you when your meal will be ready for pick-up (about 30 minutes). Since I have an hour lunch break, I order before leaving work and my sandwich is always ready by the time I get to the shop 35-40 minutes later. However, they have a new guy handling online orders and the past three times I've ordered online this past week or so, my sandwich hasn't even been started when I get there 40 minutes later, and I've had to wait an additional 15-20 minutes before it's done. To make the experience even more frustrating is that the guy seems to have no care in the world that the online orders line is 12 people deep (longer than the regular order line) as he works at a snail's pace, loudly singing along to the shop music, and he even sits down to answer calls that last a few minutes while the line continues to grow. I worked in the service industry for years, and totally understand that sometimes you just get slammed, but it's beyond irritating that this kid has no hustle during the rush. When it's super busy, you don't sit around on the phone and take 5 minutes to make one order, you power through and then chill once things die down. I'll probably still go to this location because it's close and has been a long-time favorite, I just hope they bring back the guy who used to handle the online orders (fingers crossed he's just on vacation!) or replace the current nightmare with someone better. read more

This is the second time that I've attempted to get my grub on only to be turned away because they RAN OUT OF BREAD. How does a SANDWICH place run out of bread??? And it was only 7:45! I can't believe this place only averages 3 1/2 stars - it's great! I always stop by here on those days when I've been running around like crazy and haven't had time to eat, and it's always the perfect antidote. The sandwiches are tasty and, for whatever magical reason, don't conjure up the I've-just-polluted-my-body feeling that most sandwich places give me. They taste almost...could it be?...healthy! Thundercloud! (I hear the radio guy's voice in my head every time!) Everyone needs a good 'ol sandwich from time-to-time. My weakness is the California Club: soft, fresh white bread thinly sliced turkey cheese bacon avocado (everything is better with avocado) thin slices of lettuce thin slices of tomato mayo spicy mustard (yes, both) and to top it all off- Thundersauce (which I'm pretty sure is just oil and vinegar...but damn tasty oil and vinegar!) Ahhhh Thundercloud. I wish you would come to Dallas. As it is, Thundercloud is just in Austin, and the location on Riverside is the one I usually stop at. I've been to a couple other locations, though. All are just as excellent. Since I was only in Austin for a few days, and spent the first few hours of my full day there in an Urgent Care (see: review for Bee Cave Urgent Care), I had to prioritize where I wanted to go. Thundercloud could not get cut from that list. It was to be lunch on my full day in Austin, and it was everything I remembered it to be. I thought about changing up my usual order, but decided against it, and got my fav. The Nada Chicken Parmesan on wheat. Add mushrooms. Mmmm. Delicious. The guys behind the counter were super nice and quick with my sandwich. Got my first Dr Pepper of the day here in one of their big ass styrofoam cups which kept the ice from melting, even though it was Surface-of-the-Sun hot outside. Damn I forgot to take a picture of my sandwich. I'm ashamed to admit that I only tried Thundercloud subs for the first time two months ago and it may not seem that bad but I went to school in Austin. Regret regret regret. Subway used to be my lunch sandwich spot to go to but now Thundercloud is #1. Their sandwiches are delicious, the veggies fresh, lettuce crisp (just the way i like it!), and the employees behind the counter are uber awesome. I've tried the office favorite, the california club, and the regular club and they're always packed with meat, lettuce-tomatoes-onions and any extras you might want on your sandwich for a little additional cost. You have your choice of wheat or white bread and they also have a thundercloud sauce which is oil,vinegar and "something special". They usually have a sandwich special every month, this month being the regular club. Always enjoy coming in and the guys behind the counter keep me entertained while they make my sandwich! Despite living here 7 years, I had never been in a Thundercloud because they just looked dingy and i imagined everything covered in that mayonnaise that's labeled "salad dressing." Anyway, it is actually kind of like that, but after randomly giving it a try, I've become addicted! The chewy wheat bread, salty turkey, and tangy "thunder sauce" keep me coming back. I also get soup instead of chips, and they've all been good, especially the potato soup and chili. There are some cons though: -More expensive than a Subway, with about the same quality -Sandwichmakers sometimes have gloves on, sometimes don't, and sometimes touch their faces, credit cards, pens, etc. -Free refills, but drinks are behind the counter and you have to wave someone down and endure an eye roll to get more tea. Basically no refills during peak lunch hour. read more

There may be some naysayers out there, but for the most part I think everyone can agree that Thundercloud is solid as a rock I mean, these sandwiches are addictive... if you like em, you usually love em. Austinites love these bad boys just like houstonians love their antones(only from the 3 original locations of course)! fresh and light - bread is dense and chewy (go with wheat) - cant go wrong with the california club or the plain ole turkey! I am a plain jane and order the tk on wheat - mustard, lettuce, tomato, and call it a day. Ate that everyday for a year when I lived in Austin. the waitstaff is so relaxed yet helpful... they give off the perfect austin vibe. my one complaint is that they charge for extras such as pickles and banana peppers... maybe banana peppers are harder to come by in austin?? I wish a Houston location would open (maybe with free pickles).... but it just wouldn't be the same. oh and Diet Doctor Pepper out of the fountain!!!! I mean, how could you go wrong. read more

I have been eating at Thundercloud since 1978. Never disappointed but sometimes the various locations don't seem clean. Lately I have been eating at this location and a new one in Pflugerville. This location and the one in Pflugerville always seen so much cleaner than other locations. Today this location was bright, clean, and fresh. The sandwich handlers used plastic gloves and didn't handle money with the same hands they made sandwiches with. Today my wife and son ate lunch there. Son talked me into trying the Austin Club sandwich. Was awesome! read more

Maybe I'm an easily impressed tourist, but damn this place is AMAZING! I got the veggie sub and my bf got the California club, and we both finished in record time. Our friends called us hungry, and we brought over a few more sandwiches plus a chef salad, all of which were very well received. The girl at the counter was incredibly friendly and helpful with our bajillion different orders and even offered to box up little cups of Thunder Sauce and both sweet and spicy peppers for us to go. The best spot for a cheap, semi healthy sandwich in Austin. My favorite is the California club, with turkey avocado and bacon. There are also lots of vegetarian sandwiches that are fresh with good flavor. It's a local chain and the culture inside is very hipster oriented although it is relaxed and they are friendly to everyone. For chain sub shops (primarily cold sandwiches), this is one of the best. I also love that it is an Austin chain. I cannot believe how many people still purchase and consume the soggy bland mediocre-ness that is Subway. Vomit. Moving onto TCloud. Their wheat bread is awesome, I love the vegetable toppings (for some reason the way they cut them adds to the deliciousness) and the Thundersauce, the service is fast and friendly and it is a better option than fast food. Their potato salad is pretty good as well. My favorite is the NY Italian. YUM. My only grudge lies in the fact that their vegetarian patty they used up until a few years ago is GONE and it was AWESOME. I'm not even a vegetarian, but I used to purchase that sandwich OVER the meat varieties, now THAT says something! Nada-chicken, ummm no thanks. My go-to is the Roast Beef/Avocado w/ sprouts, pickles, deli mustard...but if the special at the time tickles my fancy, I'm on it. All I have to say is that after finally trying Thundercloud after almost nine months in Austin, I'm a believer. I was skeptical, because I think most subs are created equal unfortunately, but their sandwiches are sublime. I've been going there at least once a week now, and the Tuna sub is my favorite. The Austin Club is also delicious, and the ingredients are always good and fresh. My favorite side is the potato salad, which is actually the real, homemade deal. I also love the super friendly staff, the excellent music selection--you will hear everything from The Cure to Mozart here--and the book exchange, which is such a nice touch in a neighborhood filled with college students and young professionals. Let's face it, making a sandwich isn't hard. But Thundercloud does a great job of keeping prices low and offering a superior sandwich. It really tastes fresh. I've always enjoyed the unique atmosphere that prevents the chain store decor. This location is Unique because Erin works there. Being nice is standard nowadays. But being able to banter well and be positive is on the rarer side. She makes a great sandwich, works cleanly and quickly, and is always upbeat. This location rocks because she is there. I was going to give 4 stars, but this place does deserve more than 3.5. So I'm going to 5 because when Erin is your maker ("sandwich maker" that is), it is a 5 star experience. read more

Thundercloud is right near my house, but this is actually the first time I have visited this location. I typically grab a sub in their newer airport location before hopping on a flight. The staff is always very upbeat and positive, which is nice when you are in a busy and hectic place (they are always pretty packed when I've been.) I usually get some variation of the veggie delite either with hummus or with sliced cheese (haven't tried it with cream cheese). It's a pretty simple option, but there are lots of fresh veggies to choose from so it's a nice break from all the tex mex that's so easy to eat multiple times a week in Austin! Solid, fresh subs and good service - stop in if you haven't already. read more

I'm from Houston and we don't have one of these so when I saw it I had to try it. This place is great. It's laid back and has a good feel to it. Got the Austin club- was an OK sandwich. Disappointed from the service. It was confusing how to order so I went up to the counter. Nice younger worker asked if I had been helped and I said I was just browsing the menu. When I was ready I let an older gentlemen know I was placing an order and he pointed at another customer next to me (who appeared to have received her sandwich and paid) and he said to me "wait your turn!" I was so thrown off at how rude the comment was. The woman next to me even said "I was confused how to order too." Fix the order process and fix the attitude. read more

They looked at me like I had just asked someone to eat what was left in my container. They informed me they didn't recycle, so I took my dirty container home to recycle. I had such a great experience at this location today! The staff was perfect! I tend to get stressed out (lame, I know) when I have to make split-second decisions such as "american or provolone" but they were so sweet and I love that the guy said "Happy Wednesday!" I say that all the time and I love that other people are celebrating like me! I hate spending money on lunch but going here (and walking, since it's so close to work!) was a pleasure. In general Thundercloud makes a good sub, and you always know what to expect because they are consistent. My problem is that they could use better greens. I expect more than limp, chopped Iceberg from such an iconic Austin establishment. This place will definitely hit the spot. If you like egg salad, they have something called The Office Special. It will make you slap someone it's so good... probably someone in your office. The customer service there is cool for the moat part. They have this one guy that works there who I completely avoid when I go in... in fact I would go there more if he wasn't there. read more

It's kind of how baseball always has these random stats like, most home runs hit on the first Thursday of the month by a team wearing red. Anyway... Yes, Thundercloud ranks first. For the record, my rankings for best chain sub sandwiches in the US currently looks something like this: 1) Thundercloud Subs 2) Potbelly 3) Blimpies .... SECOND TO LAST PLACE) Subway. LAST PLACE) Quiznos. Gross. (Yeah, I think Quiznos is worse than Subway. Subway doesn't necessarily taste better... but at least it doesn't try to pretend they're all gourmet and stuff. Though, I do really hate how Subway cuts a wedge out of the bread instead of just slicing the sucker in half. Ok, maybe they are just tied for last.) But Thundercloud Subs are delicious. That thundersauce... I don't think it has that much in it, but it's somehow just really really tasty. My personal favorite is the NY Italian, which I once inhaled when I wasn't even hungry. I have loved every thundercloud I have ever been to. However, tonight I walked a couple of blocks from the Citizen Cope concert at Derby in the City, on a Saturday night to eat at this location with a group of 15 people. Unfortunately, when we arrived at 8:40PM, the sign said closed, even though the hours of operations said 9PM. My group and I were extremely disappointed and forced to take our business elsewhere. This Austin original is my go to spot for sandwiches. It's always fresh and made to order. The staff is cool and very informative, letting you know weekly specials. The cost of all menu items is far less than you'll pay at other sandwich shops. I've never had a bad sandwich as long as I've been coming.
