    This is a no frills, old school Vietnamese spot in lower Midtown in an area that is generally run down but Thien An is keeping it alive. The interior is again, no frills with plenty of seating. Service is quick and minimal, make sure you are ready to order quickly. We got a selection of their foods; spring rolls (3.5/5, good but not extraordinary), banh xeo (4/5, crazy size and pretty good), banh cuon (4/5, solid with the fish sauce), and bun rieu (4/5, slightly on the milder side), and banh mi (4.5/5, their combination is the best I've had inside the loop). Plenty of authentic Vietnamese dishes that you may not be able to find in the gentrified spots.

    Serious Thien An customers probably recall the early days when Thien An was a sandwich stall within a Vietnamese grocery store inside a mall in Midtown years ago. Nowadays, though, the business has its own brick and mortar location away from the original Little Saigon area in Midtown--it is located on San Jacinto. I think the transition from stall to restaurant has been relatively successful. However, my latest visit confirms one simple fact: this place can be hit or miss. During my latest visit to pick up a takeout order, I ordered a long time favorite of mine at Vietnamese restaurants: a vermicelli dish, this time shrimp. Major pet peeve: the shrimp were tough and not deveined. Also, there was a miniscule amount of green onion but no fried onion, and what seemed like a very small amount of it. The dish cost about $13, as I recall, but there was only one cha gio and four overcooked shrimp. Granted, I was shown the takeout box before I left, and I was about to say something regarding the presentation, but decided not to. The experience made me miss the old Les Givrals even more because there's no way they would have served vermicelli like this. On the positive side of things, there are Thien An menu offerings I have really enjoyed over the years: 1. Bánh Xèo, a crepe filled with shrimp, pork and bean sprouts. 2. Cha Gio. Theirs are the only version which reminds me of the old Vietnam Restaurant, which was located on Main and Elgin. 3. Banh Mi. Hopefully the folks at Thien An will improve the vermicelli and keep perfecting the rest of their menu, which I have enjoyed in the past.

    My go to banh mi place for the past 8 or so years! Simple but always delicious, I have never been disappointed with any of their banh mi and in my opinion are the best in Houston (from what I've had so far which is quite a bit). Their other food is definitely still solid, but their banh mi is definitely the star of the menu. Service and overall aesthetic are both servicable. I've had a couple of instances where I've waited 10 or so minutes if I didn't order immediately, so I ususally order when I sit down nowadays. Outside of that I've had no issues, and they've always been super polite when actually interacting with them.

    I go here once a week or so for my bun bo hue and cafe sua da lunch fix. There is usually not a wait to be seated but if there is, it would be at the noon hour. The restaurant always seems to be at least half full between 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm so it can be a little noisy. Most of the wait staff already know what I want and sometimes will bring a menu with them to seat me but then ask if I want the usual. I should throw them a curve ball one of these days to see their reaction. Speaking of menus, they have upgraded from the laminated sheet to a booklet. The food usually comes out pretty fast and I have enough time to relax for 10-15 minutes before heading back to work.

    Popped in for lunch. The menu is pretty extensive, which I appreciated. I would typically venture toward the vermicelli dishes but for some reason the rainy/cloudy weather pulled me towards the pho. This was pretty fine, nothing terribly special. The brisket was mid, as were the meatballs. The broth was nicely clean and full of the standard fare. We also got the omelette, which was not a dish I had had before and absolutely was not a fan of. It was probably done nicely, with tons of filling (meat, seafood) and a huge portion, but it was super greasy and fairly difficult to eat. Even the dipping sauce and wrapping it in lettuce couldn't save it. Service super friendly. Lovely enormous parking lot.

    I was in the mood for banh xeo (Vietnam ế crepe) and the only location in Houston downtown area is here. I was skeptical bcoz last time i was here, i didn't have good experience. But this time was better.

    Thien An Sandwiches is a staple for me personally. Whenever I am nearby, I have to stop by. Today, I ordered a dish that I normally wouldn't get outside of the Bellaire area, banh cuon. As soon as you walk in, you're greeted by the staff. You could easily sit, order, wash your hands, get back to your table, and have your order waiting for you. My visit wasn't but 25-30 minutes, but I was tended to by my waitress 4 times with a refill or to check how I was doing. The decor is still basic but with plenty of seating in an open area. The restaurant itself is setup for large to-go orders as well. Paying your tab is simple and quick. A great combination of dining in or on the go.

    EGGcellent breakfast! So glad this restaurant is open early in the morning. My kid had an egg bánh mì. I asked for it plain with no nothing but baguette and scrambled egg instead of fried so it was probably only seasoned with a little salt and it was perfect! It took me right back to VN getting egg bành mì from street vendors. Egg banh mi is also good any time of the day. I got bún riêu and was offered chả ốc (sausage with escargot snail in it) for a little extra cost and it was heavenly. I think it was off-menu so I was extra excited to be offered it! The noodle soup broth was bursting with flavor with that yummy shrimp and tomato flavor. On my way out I got a bánh cam fried mochi ball filled with mung bean. It was expertly made and the toasted sesame was perfection.

    Tried their banh xeo and it was absolutely MASSIVE, I'd estimate around 24" in diameter!!! The crispiness was excellent (not just on the edges), the veggies and herbs were fresh, and the nuoc mam had the perfect balance of sweet and salty. Affordable price too! It was a hit all around at the table. The one improvement could be the filling, it was lacking in volume compared to the size of the pancake itself. Service was quick and friendly, plus they gave us an extra plate of veggies when we ran out, which you most likely will. Plenty of easy parking in their dedicated parking lot! Definitely give it a try if you want extra extra large and crispy banh xeo!

    Egg roll and banh cuon is good there so are most of the rice dishes. I like banh mi thit nuong and banh mi dac biet. The baby pho was too salty for me. I couldn't finish it. Bun Bo hue was watered down. The thit nuong in the rice dish was dry. The com chien in the rice dish was perfect. My fav item to order here are the egg rolls, the banh mi, banh xeo and teas. I wouldn't eat the pho or bun Bo hue here. For me the pho was salty and the bun Bo hue was watered down and bland.

The filling is placed in a pan and then a thin layer of batter made with tumeric and coconut milk yellow batter is poured on top. You wrap the lettuce around the bánh xèo/bánh khọt and dip it in the fish sauce. I got the bánh khọt and the bò né. Bánh khọt is like a mini, thicker version of bánh xèo and came with nine pieces. Their bánh khọt was crispy, sweet and savory, and went well with the fish sauce. Although the portions initally look small, they are very filling. The bò né was filling and sizzling when it came out. It also came with a side of salad. The meat was tender. I really liked the bánh khọt and would definitely come back for them. It's nice having an authentic Vietnamese restaurant in our area, close to us, so we don't have to make the trek to Bellaire every time we crave some Viet food!

I couldn't have been more wrong. Xeo Yum (#1) as it turns out is one of the most legit Vietnamese places in Midtown serving up some of the city's best banh xeo and banh khot. Located inside of a Food Hall (#2) in the back corner, they have low-key become a destination and without question, the most popular stall in the entire place. The fan base didn't happen overnight but is a direct result of Chef Cuong Nguyen's commitment to quality Vietnamese fare. Banh Xeo is their signature item, which is also known as a sizzling crepe or pancake made of rice flour, tumeric, and coconut milk. The banh xeo holds well, is perfectly crispy, and is nicely stuffed with an assortment of beans sprouts, shrimp, and some of the best grilled pork belly I've had. Another specialty item that doesn't get enough mention is their banh khot, which is similar but has a mini muffin / cupcake like appearance made in a specialty cast iron mold. This version is wonderfully crispy and pairs perfectly with fresh greens and fish sauce with some funk. It is my favorite item here. Some have argued they also serve one of the best bo ne (#3), the Vietnamese version of steak and eggs served in a skillet. The chunks of beef are nice and tender with just a tad of char, served with two fried eggs, and a banh mi baguette with a mix of butter and spare. Normally I think of spam or sausage included with the meats, but Chef Cuong's spin is with cherry tomatoes. It's a different approach and I'm not mad at it. Folks not looking for this can shoot for bo luc lac, aka shaking beef, which is also recommended. The staff here is sweet, hard-working, and very friendly. They also make a mean Vietnamese coffee and offer free iced self-serve water. The prices are what I would expect in a Midtown food hall, and there's plenty of seating. I believe the crawfish is seasonal, so go during crawfish season because this pho was delicious. The crawfish were so tender and the pho was so flavorful. The beef dish was also so good to eat and balanced. The fried beef balanced so well with the fresh salad and rice. I will say that when we went the parking lot was a little deserted at night. I would definitely lock your doors and take all your valuables. But that's all or Houston, so just stay safe!

Everything is always super flavorful and perfectly cooked. My absolute favorites are the Thit Ba Chi Kho To (caramelized pork belly), the Suon Non Rim To (braised spare ribs) and the Canh Chua Tom (Vietnamese sweet and sour soup with shrimps). I also really love their Com Chien Ca Man (salted fish & chicken fried rice), which I think is one of the best in town, as well as their Ga Kho Xa Ot (braised lemongrass chicken). The service was good, the ambience is super casual but the menu was phenomenal. They had artichoke and salmon pho! I clearly love a good pho and I was all for it! Mango was sweet and grilled pork was yummy. Papaya salad was fresh and a bit more subtle. We also ordered the fresh spring rolls. The old Saigon rolls came with mango and pork. Always liked mangoes. The other was regular fresh spring rolls with shrimp. The rolls came out last after when we got our Pho. Would have enjoyed it more if it came after the salads. I ordered the combination Pho with all the ingredients (brisket, eye round, tendon, meatball and tripe)a. There is only one size. There was a lot of noodles for the size of the bowl. They were generous with the meat. Wish they would have more soup. The soup itself was ok. Thought it was a little bland compared to others. Service was quick. It didn't take long to receive our order. They offer reusable wooden chopsticks. Will plan to try the other dishes other than Pho like rice plates next time.

Overall the food's flavor was fantastic. I ordered the king salmon clay pot. I thought the salmon was so tasty! They added pepper and sauce to the salmon - It was tender and flavorful and paired nicely with white rice. It was thicker consistency and had cilantro and chucks of lobster. The drinks served were also super balanced. We ordered the mojito and the dragon fruit cocktail. The mojito was the right balance between minty and sweet with just a hint of alcohol flavor. For the dragon fruit cocktail, it was very fruity, on the sweeter side but not overpowering and was topped with egg whites to give it a little bit of frothiness. I will say, we are slightly underdressed to enter this establishment. Everything seemed so luxurious and many people were in formal business wear! Keep this in mind if you go! There is a parking deck right next to the location as well, both self parking and valet!
