I frequent this establishment quite regularly and the food is consistently proper scrummy. I usually dine in and have a particular fondness for the bánh xèo, which is not only absolutely delicious but generously sized, easily enough to feed three people. The chả giò is equally tasty, with a portion more than sufficient for two. Service is generally decent and the restaurant itself is clean and well kept. On this particular Sunday, however, I stopped by for a late takeaway lunch. Every now and then, I rather enjoy sitting in the park overlooking the downtown skyline, tucking into a bánh mì or a spring roll with a proper beverage while making the most of fine weather. This was a simple walk in order and I had not called ahead, so I did not expect any fuss. To be fair, the wait was not long, which was appreciated. The issue arose at the point of payment. When attempting to pay by credit card on the POS system, I discovered that I could not complete the transaction without selecting one of the tip options. There was no button or option to leave "no tip" at all. In effect, I was forced to tip on a takeaway appetiser ordered at the counter. The only way to avoid tipping would have been to pay in cash, which I did not have at the time. I have no objection to tipping when dining in or when placing a larger order in advance, such as a business lunch. However, I have always understood that tipping is not expected for a small walk in takeaway order where no table service is provided. This is a no frills, old school Vietnamese spot in lower Midtown in an area that is generally run down but Thien An is keeping it alive. The interior is again, no frills with plenty of seating. Service is quick and minimal, make sure you are ready to order quickly. We got a selection of their foods; spring rolls (3.5/5, good but not extraordinary), banh xeo (4/5, crazy size and pretty good), banh cuon (4/5, solid with the fish sauce), and bun rieu (4/5, slightly on the milder side), and banh mi (4.5/5, their combination is the best I've had inside the loop). Serious Thien An customers probably recall the early days when Thien An was a sandwich stall within a Vietnamese grocery store inside a mall in Midtown years ago. Nowadays, though, the business has its own brick and mortar location away from the original Little Saigon area in Midtown--it is located on San Jacinto. I think the transition from stall to restaurant has been relatively successful. However, my latest visit confirms one simple fact: this place can be hit or miss. During my latest visit to pick up a takeout order, I ordered a long time favorite of mine at Vietnamese restaurants: a vermicelli dish, this time shrimp. Major pet peeve: the shrimp were tough and not deveined. Also, there was a miniscule amount of green onion but no fried onion, and what seemed like a very small amount of it. The dish cost about $13, as I recall, but there was only one cha gio and four overcooked shrimp. Granted, I was shown the takeout box before I left, and I was about to say something regarding the presentation, but decided not to. The experience made me miss the old Les Givrals even more because there's no way they would have served vermicelli like this. On the positive side of things, there are Thien An menu offerings I have really enjoyed over the years: 1. Bánh Xèo, a crepe filled with shrimp, pork and bean sprouts. 2. Cha Gio. Theirs are the only version which reminds me of the old Vietnam Restaurant, which was located on Main and Elgin. 3. Banh Mi. Hopefully the folks at Thien An will improve the vermicelli and keep perfecting the rest of their menu, which I have enjoyed in the past. read more

Simple but always delicious, I have never been disappointed with any of their banh mi and in my opinion are the best in Houston (from what I've had so far which is quite a bit). Every time I've gone, myself & my lunch dates have enjoyed a great meal. They have pho but also other soups (the duck was great). I go here once a week or so for my bun bo hue and cafe sua da lunch fix. There is usually not a wait to be seated but if there is, it would be at the noon hour. The restaurant always seems to be at least half full between 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm so it can be a little noisy. Most of the wait staff already know what I want and sometimes will bring a menu with them to seat me but then ask if I want the usual. Popped in for lunch. The menu is pretty extensive, which I appreciated. I would typically venture toward the vermicelli dishes but for some reason the rainy/cloudy weather pulled me towards the pho. This was pretty fine, nothing terribly special. The brisket was mid, as were the meatballs. The broth was nicely clean and full of the standard fare. We also got the omelette, which was not a dish I had had before and absolutely was not a fan of. It was probably done nicely, with tons of filling (meat, seafood) and a huge portion, but it was super greasy and fairly difficult to eat. This place is pretty much an OG spot in Midtown. I'm not sure why I haven't reviewed it before, but when Les Givral's was still around, Thien An was the other go-to spot for bánh mì. And honestly? It still delivers. Their bánh xèo is a must, and don't miss the special drink. The space is roomy with plenty of seating and, thankfully, ample parking (a Midtown rarity). As soon as you walk in, you're greeted by the staff. You could easily sit, order, wash your hands, get back to your table, and have your order waiting for you. My visit wasn't but 25-30 minutes, but I was tended to by my waitress 4 times with a refill or to check how I was doing. The decor is still basic but with plenty of seating in an open area. I asked for it plain with no nothing but baguette and scrambled egg instead of fried so it was probably only seasoned with a little salt and it was perfect! It took me right back to VN getting egg bành mì from street vendors. Egg banh mi is also good any time of the day. I got bún riêu and was offered chả ốc (sausage with escargot snail in it) for a little extra cost and it was heavenly. I think it was off-menu so I was extra excited to be offered it! Tried their banh xeo and it was absolutely MASSIVE, I'd estimate around 24" in diameter!!! The crispiness was excellent (not just on the edges), the veggies and herbs were fresh, and the nuoc mam had the perfect balance of sweet and salty. Affordable price too! Great little Vietnamese spot in Midtown. Came on a Sunday around noon and the place wasn't too busy. Got seated immediately. Service was maybe a smidge slow since they seemed a bit understaffed. We ended up just walking up to the cash register and asking to order. Got the Banh Xeo and Pho Dac Biet. The Banh Xeo was huge. One of the biggest I've seen and was stuffed pretty well. I haven't tried Xeo Yum which people say is also a great Banh Xeo spot in Midtown. Was pretty delicious. The pho was also very solid. Pretty standard, but hit on a cold day. Noodles were a little clumpy but eventually separated. On the way out got one of the glutinous rice ball pastries with mung bean stuffed in it and it was yummy, too. This remains my favorite place to go to for a DELICIOUS vietnamese meal in the loop! We have been going every chance we can - especially with their hours, it can be hard to catch them open. We ordered banh cuon every time we have been but finally during a weekday lunch meal, we were able to try it!! And it did not disappoint! I was really craving some banh mi and I found this location on the way to the airport. It was a really big place inside and people were constantly going in and out. I ordered the banh mi dac biet and the banh mi thit, and I also grabbed a xoi khuc since they had it at the counter (I'm a sucker for that stuff). The xoi khuc was as expected; it's rare that I'll find one that isn't to my liking--it had a greater ratio of xoi to filling than I've had though, so that might not be satisfying for some people. The filling was also not very salty, so the snack could be perceived as a bit bland for people with a more flavorful palate. The banh mi had nice bread; crispy light on the outside and soft inside, and I liked that they have pig ear here. For the dac biet, I felt like there wasn't much else (I barely found any shredded chicken) and didn't really have much cha lua either, which made it really similar to the thit version. Overall, it wasn't my favorite banh mi in the world but it's overall inexpensive and gets the job done. My only other qualm was that the floors inside were sticky, which wasn't pleasant to walk on and made me wonder what they mopped with. read more

They have their own dedicated massive parking lot, which can easily fit at least 50 vehicles. Upon entry into the restaurant, it's a literal sprawl of seats and tables and a bustling staff. This isn't a sandwich shop. It's a full fledged restaurant. For Vietnamese cuisine enthusiasts, the big draw here is for their banh xeo, which is said to be one of the best in Houston. It's large, nicely filled, and crispy all throughout. The banh cuon is also excellent, thin drapes of rice noodle and a stellar portion to boot. Their cha gio and goi cuon are also solid and are popular menu options. A big part of a quality banh mi, is the bread. The bread they use here is airy, crispy, and super light. It has just the right amount of flakiness and thankfully isn't hard enough to rip up the gums (#1). I don't think their noodle soups or rice plates are their strengths, but they are still solid in a pinch. The service is also top notch. They have plenty of staff, are good about working phone orders, and get the food out in good time. This place can get pretty crowded during the average lunch days, but I think whether one is eating solo or rolling with a group of 20, there are options. Ordered from Thien An many times over the years. They're almost always busy but the service is pretty quick. My go-to dish is bun suong! Can't go wrong trying this instead of the typical pho or bun bo hue. If you're feeling extra hungry, the gigantic banh xeo here is also delicious! I was not too crazy about their bo bia or com bo luc lac (rice was good but the beef could've been more savory), but it's worth trying once.
