Small cozy restaurant. Gets packed during lunch even the parking. The menu was bilingual had English, Viet, and Spanish on it. They make their own bread in house for the banh mi. I got the Che and I don't think it was the best I've ever had. It had too much ice in it for me to enjoy the jelly in it, felt like I was chewing on crushed ice the whole time with coconut milk. The banh mi was ok it wasn't memorable. I also got the yellow curry with bread. It wasn't what I expected but it wasn't terrible. It wasnt as rich as other yellow curries I've had before. I will say the chicken and carrots were tender and tasty. At the end you do go up front to pay when they give you your bill. read more

If it were based on food alone, I would definitely rate them higher because the food was cooked perfectly. The star of the show was most definitely the warm baguettes. For full context, we wandered in at 8:25p on a Saturday night. Immediately upon walking in, the server asked if we were ordering for here or to go. Considering that I wanted the beef stew that I had seen on a IG reel and drove half an hour to get there, I asked if we could order for dine in. He told us yes, but they closed at 9. He handed us menus and hovered over us asking what we wanted to order. Now normally when places close at a certain hour, they either stop taking kitchen orders at a certain time to ensure they can close on time or they only allow you to order to go. In this case, they brought out our food and basically started giving us the count down of how much time we had to eat this bowl of piping hot stew. I will say the meat and carrots were super tender, the baguette tasted freshly made and was perfectly flaky on the outside and soft on the inside. The lemonade tasted fresh squeezed and not a powder mix, which was nice. However, imagine trying to shove all of that down in 10 minutes. At one point the waiter came and tried to start clearing off the table after announcing we had 5 minutes. There were 2 other tables of patrons there, but he was only giving us the countdown even though they were just sitting down talking by then. We asked for the check since he kept rushing us out and walked out literally with the baguette in hand trying to finish eating. I would recommend this place based on food, but beware of lousy service and definitely don't come in anywhere near closing time. read more

Since last year, I've made it a personal mission to hit up every pho spot throughout the city and it feels nice to tack off Pho VN 21 off my list. They check off most of the boxes: really solid pho, good service, and affordable prices. I wouldn't hesitate to come back for more. Pho VN 21 isn't a particularly large space, but it's got the potential for seating all kinds of groups. It's got that divey feel, which has always been a driver for me, along with the semi-tacky chandelier, random plant placement, and a bustling staff. This is an ideal spot for solo dining when it's not busy but the likelihood for the rowdy ambiance is very high. To no one's surprise, the bathrooms are not their strong suit. This is one of the only Viet places I've seen that has Spanish translations for their dishes. Rollo de primavera (spring roll)? Sopa de carne con fideo (beef noodle soup)? Estofado de res (beef stew)? These are pretty direct translations and it seems to work as I noticed a number of Spanish speaking patrons. Buen trabajo. The pho is solid. The broth will always play the most important role and while it's not as fragrant as I like, I still appreciate the clean finish and strong flavor. I appreciate that my bowl of pho dac biet had no shortage of meat and was packed with all kinds of cuts, which included a very nice flank and tender chunks of tendon. I also tried their bun thit nuong, where the grilled pork was subtly sweet and nicely charred. The gui cuon summer rolls were certainly better than their semi-wimpy cha gio spring rolls, but both were still worthy appetizers. My Viet coffee was overly sweet (#1) and served in a beer pint. While the service was a tinge on the slow side, they were friendly and conversing with us in Viet and really whack Chinese. We appreciated the good natured humor and were impressed at how quickly everything made it to our table. I got a quick to go order with 1 pork banh mi and 1 shredded chicken banh mi and a vermicelli noodle with beef. Service was really fast for a walk in. Maybe a total of 8 minutes of waiting. The shop looks a little tired inside with just normal tables and not much decor. The noodles were fine and had a lot of veggies. The banh mi was also fine but the jalapenos were super spicy, even after I took them out. All I could taste was the burning in my mouth and that dampened my food experience a little bit. Overall, for banh mi I would still prefer Pho Binh or Roostar. It was an ok experience overall, but not sure I would order again. read more

I was craving some pho today and my normal spot was closed today so I decided to come here. I ordered the chicken pho with white meat and a Vietnamese iced coffee. The chicken pho was pretty bland and didn't have the normal pho flavor in the broth. The iced coffee however was pretty good and cheap ($3.75). I probably would not come back here for the pho, but I may stop by next time I want an iced coffee. read more

Was raining and wanted some Pho and Bahn Mi - Pho 21 delivered. Very simple little place in the strip mall. Pho hit the spot and everything fresh and tasty. We did take out and I like how they packed everything for the soup separate and you could put it all together at home. You don't want the fresh veggies soggy ;) Spring rolls also fresh and tasty. I do not have a mission to try every "Banh Mi" place in this city and this place is more pho than sammy, and I think they open more new ones for every one I check off....That being said the pho my wife got was tasty, she got the combo #2, chicken noodle pho with a drink and two fried eggrolls, I almost didn't get to try the soup/broth, she liked it that much. I got and enjoyed a grilled pork banh mi and some fried egg rolls. The pork was a little too chewy in a few spots, deducting one star 'cause there were a few pieces I couldn't disassemble, the egg rolls were great. I loved my iced Viet style coffee, they bring a small drip coffee filter sitting on a cup with condensed milk in it, it sits on the cup for a few minutes, a smart person would figure out that stirring well before pouring it over ice cubes would achieve optimum results.....oh well, still came out tasty, the gentleman that waited on us asked if I wanted it strong....yes please! Pho Vn 21 is a phenomenal restaurant with fast takeout, good portion sizes, great prices, and generous servings of protein. I ordered the large #18 pho which included eye round steak, soft tendon, fatty brisket, and well done flank. The hostess was very kind. Food came out in about 10 minutes nicely wrapped. When I opened the to-go box, I was excited to see big portions of each of the meats that were included. My pet peeve in pho is when they don't give you a good ratio of noodles and meat, or when they give you a very uneven portion of each of the included proteins so that you're left wishing there was just a little more of one of them. They did a great job of including a healthy helping of each! They also included a generous amount of Thai basil, cilantro, onions, green onion, jalapeño, bean sprouts, and the premixed hoisin/Sriracha sauce. I could tell that each of the ingredients were very fresh, especially the vegetables - slightly surprising too given that I had ordered near closing time. Although the broth in the container was still too hot to handle, I opted to bring it to a boil in a pot anyway to ensure everything was heated well in the bowl. After pouring, I started with a spoonful of broth - it was very smooth and packed with flavor, but also still nice and light at the same time. I think this may have been because the majority of the flavor came from the robust aromatics and oil that were infused in the broth, which complemented the depth and savoriness of the clear beef broth very well. Interestingly, the broth was also sweeter than most other broths I have had, but in a good balanced way that combined well with the other flavors. I ended up liking the broth so much that I didn't bother adding anything else in it. The jalapeños added a nice mild spicy kick, which I loved as I prefer things spicy Overall, this was an amazing bowl of pho packed with flavor and served in a generous portion, especially for takeout. And for only $8? It's almost too good to be true. Do yourself a favor and give this place a try. read more

This was a unique place, this is the first time I saw a Vietnamese restaurant with menu translated in espanol as well. I ordered fresh spring rolls and vegetarian pho chay with tofu. The spring rolls seemed pre-rolled because the rice paper seemed very chewy and honestly didn't have much taste. Maybe if it had more herbs it'd have been better. For some reason I also felt their tofu lacked some salt seasoning or something because everywhere else tofu tastes a bit different, and here it seemed bland. The tofu taste continues in pho as well as it's the same tofu cubes shared across dishes. After adding a hint of chili oil the pho gained some taste and was good to eat. The serving was pretty huge and the noodles and broth were pretty hot too from start of the meal to end. Based on food, it's a 3 star. Experience: based on my experience I won't be returning to this place. The server tried too hard to be funny and seemed rather biased for me being of Indian origin. While my friends ordered in Vietnamese and I ordered in English, once he was done making fun of how I don't speak Vietnamese like my friends, he quickly switched to Vietnamese to tell my friends that some Indians are good and some not very good and ended in English while looking at me and saying "hope you are the good one". Later the stereotyping continued as he brought water. In a party of 4, he served 3 white glasses and one red glass and even pointed out that he brought a special glass for me because I'm different. On top of this he also gave me a fork and some chili oil without asking for it. I want to clarify that he only got for me, not for others. He literally placed one fork next to me. Still competitive with offerings around town though. The dishes tend to have a high carb to meat/leaf ratio. Food comes out pretty quickly and the place is usually bustling. The vibe is a no-frills, family-run energy, and the waiter was friendly and quick, if not a bit curt. You don't come here mainly for the service, but it's really quite acceptable. Pho VN 21 runs with the best around Houston, and it's the local champ for Vietnamese food between beltway 8 and downtown. read more

This Vietnamese joint may not have the most amazing vegetarian pho, ever, but they have it! Like, vegetarian broth and all! I see you, other pho restaurants, passing off your chicken or beef stock based pho as "vegetarian." And it's quite good and the tofu chunks are generous! Bonus points - it's much more convenient for us than Chinatown and Midtown Vietnamese restaurants. So I think this place may be family owned? The service isn't particularly inviting and warm but it's efficient and the food arrives with haste, so I'm totally down with it. The vegetarian broth itself isn't the most teeming with flavor so a little hoisin, sriracha, basil, and cilantro will perfectly livens it up. The most redeeming aspect of this pho is the plentiful tofu content - is fried and it's a perfect addition to the pho. It would be nice if the pho had some veggies thrown in but I suppose they want to keep it authentic-like. The kitchen is also seemingly fine with substitutions (although don't go crazy) - the husband wanted to swap out his pho rice noodles for firmer won ton soup noodles and his request was granted. It wasn't supremely crowded either two times we dined here, which is always nice (I hate waiting for tables in my old age!). On an impulse, my family decided to grab a Vietnamese dinner, after we chowed down on my mom's cooking. We ordered a Pho 21 (the signature pho with all the meat toppings) and the bun bo hue, a new dish I heard about with a spicy blood-red broth. To top it off, we got a coconut, bean, and jelly concoction that I highly recommend. So milky and fun! The food came out super quickly. Both broths are delicious, though I found my bias is still the lighter and simplier pho. A place for improvement is the temperature of the soups which are only lukewarm. This is our go to spot for Pho. My daughter and I have been coming here so some time now, and we have enjoyed the selections we have tried. Our favorite are their egg rolls, the seafood pho, shrimp pho, or just the beef one. Whenever I have a sinus infection or a cold, we stop here some some pho. It just seems to help with whatever we are dealing with, especially after you add all of the ingredients. On our last visit, I stepped out of my comfort zone and tried their barbecue pork with the noodles. The meat was tender and very delicious. I did enjoy it, but the only thing was my noodles were the cold dish. Next time I will do it with steamed rice. read more
