(First time customer) The food is ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS, we got the pork ribs, egg drop soup, crab puffs, general tso chicken and pepper steak as well as the orange chick all paired with fried rice (the orange chicken was about $15 alone and everything else was around $50) and the serving is pretty decent and again it all tastes AMAZING. The quality of the food is so delicious it's hard to come across Chinese food this good, and the ones that I'm familiar with have closed or have new management and doesn't taste the same (china house , tan hunan, etc) the only thing I will say is I wish they had sweet tea! Other than that highly recommend. Next time I'll get pictures! I came here for lunch with my grandpa, and it was amazing. The restaurant is quiet, but there was music playing at a low volume. The service was great, and the food came out really quick. This is classic old school Chinese American. Like a time machine taking you back to the traditional Chinese of the 60's. At the time we went here Irene and I were going on a cruise the next week and on previous trips we had met some delightful Royal Caribbean. staff members from diverse countries such as Ukraine and Belarus. While Irene is putting together gift bags for the waitstaff and room staff (toiletries and such that they would normally have to pay for in the cruise ship company store), I set off to visit the several Russian and Ukraine grocery stores to buy chocolates and savories from those respective countries. My first visit was to the Armenian owned Golden Grain on Birdsall, now closed, and followed by what was once called the Russian General Store now shortened to just General Store. Purchased made. But the additional opportunity was to dine at Happy Lamp, one of the three older Chinese American restaurants in Houston. Happy Lamp was established in 1973! I settle in for a lunch of sweet and sour pork with hot and sour soup and hot tea.. The other two would be Ambassador and China Garden. The hot and sour soup and the sweet and sour are classic Sino-American flavor profiles and I was in a Time Machine mode, remembering, growing up in Houston and going out with my family once a week. I can't speak to the service or ambiance as it was a to-go order, but I can say that their website is easy to use and their delivery was efficient. There are so many great dishes and sides to choose from. The food was delicious, and the portions were hearty. I would definitely order from them again. Some tips: If you are ordering as a group, order a variety of dishes and share (family style). Also, try one of the two "Birds Nest" chef's specialties options. Happy Lamp is one of the best Chinese restaurants in Houston. Few people know about it because it is tucked away in a small shopping center at Hillcroft and S. Braeswood in SW Houston, but it is worth visiting. It attracts a decent-sized lunch crowd and a few evening diners mostly from the adjoining neighborhood, but it is definitely a find. Lots of repeat customers, including my family and me. The vibe is from the 1960s or 70s with a large Chinese mural, but the food is always outstanding and the service friendly and prompt. I ordered the Kung Pao Chicken without peanuts or vegetables, fried rice, egg roll, and egg drop soup - after tax, it came to $9.45 TOTAL! Wow! The egg drop soup has no corn - THANK YOU! Probably one of the few places in town that DOESN'T put corn in their egg drop soup. So, Thank You, for that. The soup is always hot, which is great. I also appreciate that the soup is always hot. The fried rice has a smoky flavor to it, and the lunch plate comes with an egg roll. They have sweet & sour sauce and hot mustard on the table. My Kung Pao Chicken came with a lot of chicken and a lot of sauce - perfect for mixing with the rice. My ONLY real complaint was that it came with white rice and we prefer fried, idk if that's bc we ordered through Ubereats or what. Ever since we moved in this area, we've been looking for a Chinese restaurant that's less than a 5 minute drive and doesn't require us to go to Chinatown. My co-worker recommended Happy Lamp and said he's been going for years. The décor inside is actually pretty nice. There's a mural painted on the wall and the furniture and table is high quality. I thought the menu would be very Americanized since there wasn't another Asian in the place other than the waitstaff. However, was surprised to find under the Chef's Specialties there were authentic dishes. We opted for the Four Treasures in Bird's nest (beef chicken shrimp and scallops in a brown sauce in a fried noodle bowl) and the sole fillets with vegetables. Dishes were a bit pricey $13 per dish but when the food came out the portions were large! I enjoyed the bird's nest (I love crunchy noodles) and the meat inside was cooked very tenderly. The sole fillets were flavorful and there was a good meat to vegetable (snow peas, carrots, celery) ratio. Overall, food was tasty for a place not in Chinatown. A couple of these negative reviews are questionable. Do these people have their own Chinese chefs? This is a really good neighborhood Chinese restaurant with a pleasant and quiet dining room. I had the Seafood Delight in Bird's Nest today and it was great. The variety is not what is found in other Chinese restaurants, but the food is always excellent. Oh my gosh, the food is so good. We order the orange chicken and fried rice, and it's fantastic. They use just the right amount of soy sauce, and the chicken is so tender. The orange sauce has just enough sweetness-- not too sweet. We live about five minutes away. When we order takeout, the food is still very hot when we get home. GOOD FOR PANDEMIC! This is a family run restaurant near our house. Not haute cuisine but good and reliable with quick to go service. Our son picked up an order today and was impressed. Everyone masked and tables barricade to enforce social distancing. Research shows 133°F for 15 minutes. We let the food site 15minutes and my instant read digital thermometer said it was 150° so it looks safe. So I moved to the area about a year ago and drive by Happy Lamp almost every day but never felt a craving for it. Yesterday after being stuck inside with this godforsaken winter freeze we needed food as all of ours went bad. Happy Lamp was the only place I could find open. So we ordered 3 meals and 2 appetizers and hoped for the best. This was some of the best Chinese food i've ever had. I'm kicking myself in the butt for waiting this long to try it and will keep going back. AS they say NEVER judge a book by its cover. On top of it the man and lady who seemed to be running this place were working their butts off taking orders on the phone and running food out to people for their to go orders.
