House Fried Rice

We had a good time at North China. The staff were very friendly and they seem to have a lot of regulars come in. The dining room was good size and very clean. Our server made suggestions and answered all our questions. We would go back again.

North China in Houston is an easy, EASY five star spot. The big koi mural outside and the gold Buddha statue inside are pretty cool, and the place has a comfortable feel not trendy, but normal (which is a plus). The staff is friendly and easygoing, and I didn't feel rushed at all. I started with the fish bun, and it was really good. The buns were airy and warm, and the fried fish was crispy outside and tender inside. The flavor was there 100 percent, they marinated the hell out of it! So good. For my main entree, I got the Colonel Tsos' Chicken. They make it with a whole chicken cutlet instead of small pieces, the first time I've had it prepared like that. The breading crisp, the meat was juicy, and the sauce had a nice mix of sweet and spicy. It came with fried rice and house salad, and potatoes. All were good and on par with any other high end restaurants. My wife ordered the shrimp, and she loved it. She is actually the one who recommended the place, and she was right. She said the shrimp was fresh, flavorful, and cooked perfectly. Their house made spicy chili sauce, made with serrano peppers, on point. It had heat and flavor. I asked if I could take some home, and they were totally fine with it and even packed a few extra containers for me. North China serves fresh food, pays attention to the details, and treats you well. It is easily one of the better spots in Houston for Mandarin food with a dash of Korea. We had other items, but I'm tired of typing lol

Zhajiang Mian

I went a bit off the beaten path to try a dish I had never seen before on a menu in Houston: Zhjiang Mian, which consists of Ground pork, yellow onion, fermented black bean paste, and wheat noodles. I found it to be deeply satisfying in a comfort food kind of way. It's not flashy, it's subtle. The service at North China is exceptional too.

Shredded Pork Bun

The FOOD!!! Omg amazing. Go there. It's excellent. We ordered the beef noodle soup and the Beijing shredded pork. Both are very authentic Chinese. The broth for the soup is the best beef broth I've ever tasted in the dish anywhere in Houston. Go and checkout and you may agree. The shredded pork came with homemade buns that were perfect in texture and cooked exactly as they are supposed to be. Put the yummy shredded pork inside the bun and you'll be back- guaranteed. For those newbies- this is NOT BBQ style shredded pork. This is cut pieces of pork in a wonderfully flavored sauce with the steamed buns around the outside of the plate. You won't find better. If this place was in China, it would get the highest restaurant ratings Service was quick and friendly and some free appetizer chips with duck sauce to start. Don't miss this restaurant.

Lots of working folk here for lunch during the weekday. I like their lunch special of a meal with an egg roll. The service was fast and attentive! I got the Mandarin shrimp. It was good but the fried rice I wish was not just rice but had veggies and egg in it. The egg roll was yummy, it is vegetarian though. Very big portion size.

Beijing beef

My family and I haven't eaten from here in a really long time, so it was nice to be back to dine in for dinner! The restaurant was cozy and spacious. The staff were extremely kind and attentive. They provided awesome service to us and everyone around. I was excited when they brought out the complimentary wonton chips- they are addicting. The food was amazing, and it truly hit the spot and satisfied all cravings. At first, the portions of the meat dishes looked relatively small, but it was actually very filling. My favorite was the Beijing beef. The meat was so tender, and there was just the right amount of sauce on it. The minced garlic chicken was also delicious! And honestly, even the rice itself was fantastic. The jjamppong was LOADED. They had pieces of plump shrimp, pork slices, mushrooms, and other vegetables. The noodles were cooked to perfection: chewy and soft. This dish alone could fill me up. I look forward to visiting again and trying other dishes. Great food and great service... what more could you ask for? :D

Complimentary Wonton Crisps

Saw this place on social media and had to try it as I'm a big fan of Chinese-Korean cuisine. The jjamppong and jjajangmyeon were both great, but I think I prefer the latter. Noodle texture was chewy and satisfying. Jjamppong had a generous amount of seafood and the soup was rich and flavorful. Black bean noodles were more savory which I appreciate and the sauce was full of meat and veggies! I made sure to scoop up any of the remaining sauce with white rice. We also tried the eggplant with ground chicken and that was amazing as well. Loved the sauce for that one. Vegetable dumplings here are pretty good too, especially if you like ginger. I will be back here for sure!

Wish I remembered the name of the man who answers the phone. He was super nice and courteous. Food was good I ordered the house fried rice without onions. Tasted good but a bit on the dry side despite the soy sauce. It's a bit pricey compared to other spots in the area. Egg rolls were good and crunchy. I will probably return if I'm in the area.

Can you tell me more about this cuisine? As a Korean person I have my own understanding of what Chinese Korean food is, and looking at pictures and the menu, this seems different from what Chinese Korean food is in Korea (although some similarities)

If you're familiar with Jajeongmyeon, Jjamppong, or Tangsuyuk, those are all examples of Chinese food in Korea! We make all of those things, and even have a translated Korean Menu.

Does the lunch special include soup?

No, but soup is only $2.50 for a lunch addon!

Do you have a banquet room for 30 and do you have a banquet menu?

Sure! We can set up dining for 30 people. Our private dining room itself will fit up to 24. We also have another private dining room upstairs for to 40-80 people.

Are the noodles made in-house?

Hey Chris! So there are only two things in this restaurant on our menu that we do NOT make from scratch. Those are our noodles for our noodles dishes, and the lotus leaf buns. Fear not however, the reason we do this is because we've used this same… Read more

It is sweet and a bit soupy from all the sauce. The noodles are chewy and bouncy, and get coated in the sauce nicely. There is a good amount of meat that comes with it too! The flavors are great. 2) Jaengbanjjajang: This is my go-to and personal favorite noodle dish to get here. It is similar to their original jjangmyeon except that it is less soupy and has a bit of spice. The spiciness adds a nice kick balancing the sweet and savory flavors. There are also lots of different mix ins like squid, shrimp, beef, and vegetables! The play on textures and contrasting flavors is why I love this dish 3) Spicy Chicken Wings (Yangnyeom): For not being a chicken wing restaurant, Paiks sure does serve some banger wings. Juicy big wings with a slight crisp on the outside. The sauce is amazing. It is that sweet and spicy yangnyeom korean fried chicken sauce. 4) Tangsuyuk: I never visit Paisk without ordering their tangsuyuk. Perfectly fried with a great chew. The pork is not too porky or gamey which is nice, and the sauce is a sticky sweet and sour sauce. 4) Gunmandoo: Their panfried dumplings are quite nice too! I haven't gotten them in a while, but they were solid Overall, I don't think there was a single dish I disliked here at Paiks. Service is standard, not too fast not too slow. The ambiance is not really one for dates or anything. It's super casual with metal chairs. It can get a bit cold. There are restrooms and water dispensers. They used to have the self serve yellow radish but now they just serve it with your meal. You have to clean your table yourself and put all the dish trays in the back
