    General Tso's Chicken

If I lived closer to this restaurant, it would be my go to Chinese place. Service is efficient and friendly. Food is solid. They have a lunch special that is around $13 and comes with the main dish, fried rice, bok choy, hot and sour soup, and two small spring rolls. Good deal and really quick service. I usually get the stir fried green beans, general tso chicken, Mongolian beef, spicy fried chicken bites, and hot and sour soup. This place is usually packed. Also, the parking is really tight, so be prepared to circle the place and possible have to do some street parking.

Loved this place we came for a birthday celebration and it was Mr. Hu's birthday as well! We sang for him and gave him cake, and he sliced up a watermelon for our friends birthday. An extremely special experience!

I've long heard that Hu's Cooking is the place to go for quality Chinese food in the inner loop, and my first visit there last weekend met all expectations. The food was well plated and good portioned, which matched the premium menu prices in comparison to other Chinese restaurants. We ordered three dishes for two people, and it made for a good balanced meal. The spicy chicken was a surprising twist of Sichuan flavors with popcorn chicken like texture. Seeing that the menu featured Sichuan spices and multiple peppers, I was initially worried that the spice levels might go over my tolerance, but luckily the dishes were made less mild than the typical Sichuan restaurants to cater to the diverse customer base in inner loop. Highly recommend Hu's Cooking for anyone new to Sichuan cuisine to ease into the flavors. The reason for the one star short of five is due to the limited parking space and the ceiling in the restaurant showing signs of aging (i.e. visible insulation and missing covers). Overall, I found dining at Hu's Cooking to be a pleasant experience. The service was great, and the staff speak both Chinese and English fluently. We outstayed our meal up till the time they closed for the afternoon, and the servers still respected our space until we finished our meal and conversations and naturally got up to leave. Definitely a nice touch to the experience and well appreciated. I will be back again, and I have my eyes on trying the famous Mapo Tofu next time.

Lunch time: The food tasted fresh. The staff were nice and inviting. The food was plentiful and very fresh. Loved the soup. Loved the rice. Def returning.

My go-to spot for high-quality Chinese food! If you're looking for tasty Chinese meals in a nice atmosphere, this is the spot to try. Service is better than your typical authentic Asian restaurant (it's not self-serve). Parking is available in the front and back of the restaurant. I also highly recommend their szechuan dishes and mapo tofu!

Hidden gem you should try if you're in the area. The parking was somewhat confusing, but we managed to park in the back. There is also parking in the front. They utilize their space well given the size. The service was quick. We ordered the: Dandan noodles (portion was small and sauce wasn't as flavorful) Mapo tofu (great portion size with good flavor) Spicy chicken (fried) (bite sized pieces of popcorn chicken - good try) Xiao long bao (there wasn't much soup in the xlb and the portion was small, but the flavor was good) Pan fried pork dumplings (potstickers were good for what they were) Overall I'd give it a try.

This was a holiday gathering with family. My sister loves this place. We took our parents. My Dad really liked the food. They loved the eggplant. The sauce is tasty but I don't particularly like eggplant's texture. I ordered a cabbage and tofu soup. The serving is generous. The jasmine tea was served in a pretty pot. The waitresses were friendly and efficient. Everyone loved their food. Because I'm pescetarian, I didn't try the rest of the food. My favorite part was the dessert. We shared the crème brûlée and cheesecake. They're delicious. Save room for dessert.

First visit to Hu's Cooking and I'm already planning my return. I came in with every intention of trying a dry pot (which I still really want), but in a moment of basic B**** brilliance, I pivoted to the spicy General Tso's--and wow, no regrets. It totally hit the spot and scratched the itch for bold, satisfying comfort food with a real kick. I also grabbed a Basque cheesecake, though I haven't touched it yet because the General Tso's completely filled me up. (Dessert review pending--if I don't inhale it in the middle of the night.) I did pickup this time, and the whole experience was smooth--quick in and out, with friendly service and solid vibes inside. The dining area looks like a great spot to post up for a full meal, especially when I come back to finally get that dry pot. Pro tip: there's a large parking lot in the back, which is super convenient if everyone parks like a reasonable human. A few oversized trucks had things a little jammed up when I was there, but there's plenty of space when used wisely. Definitely adding this place to my regular West U rotation.

Eggplant was probably my favorite dish

I loveee Szechuan food so I was very excited to try Hu's cooking and the food did NOT disappoint. My sister and I came here on a Thursday night and there was no wait at all. Service was very fast. We ordered the spicy chicken, mapo tofu, and eggplant and everything was delicious with a nice kick. My favorite was probably the eggplant though and I'm not generally a fan of eggplant but this was sooo good. Parking is very tight in the front but they have additional parking in the back. I can't wait to come back!

Will definitely be coming back here to try the lunch/dinner dim sum menu. We got the lunch special, which was fried rice with an egg roll and some soup and your choice of the meat to go with it for $14. I got the Kung Pao chicken, and it was soooo soft and moist. The sauce on it was yummy, and the bok choy was also delicious. The fried rice was a little dry and could have had more flavor by itself, but with the meat it was good. The cucumber chili salad was a really well-balanced dish because it was super fresh against the hot entree and soup we were having. Considering the portion size they gave, this was a steal! They also gave us 2 egg rolls instead of 1, and the hot and sour soup was delicious. The service was really fast, and they were very kind. The ambiance inside is cute and cozy too.

I've always loved coming to Hu's cooking. Quality meets quantity meets absolute yum! The service has always been pleasant and timely, while the interior is spacious and the tables have plenty of room for the generous portions. I also appreciate the extra parking in the back of the building. The Sichuan style food is spectacular. I love the eggplant, the twice cooked pork, the fish curry and the tofu! Everything is flavorful, with a pleasant kick of spice. The pork was tender and the texture was perfect. Paired with the white rice, everything was delicious. However, you can ask for the spice level to be adjusted to your preferences. Our server was extremely pleasant and attentive. Our water glasses were never empty and we were checked on all the time, which was really appreciated. Literally one of my favorite places for Chinese cuisine!

Service - Ericka the owner/server was great. She chatted with us, was friendly. Provided good service. There was a DJ spinning some great tunes, for there soft opening. Food - I ordered the oxtail combo $29.49, which comes with rice/peas and cabbage and 2 plantains. With the combo you are allowed one additional meat of jerk chicken or stewed chicken, or curry goat (I think). The food was tasty. Plan to visit again. She also offered chicken soup, which was yum, great on the cool day. Drinks - I asked Ericka if they sold adult bevy's, as I had seen on the Bourban Sizzler Yelp page. She said no, but they had some carribean soft drinks and juices. I got the pineapple & Guava, expectedly sweet, but not overbearing. Wishing this black owned business much succes.

They are cutting the oxtails in half leaving a lot of fragmented bones in the gravy Try to drain off some of your oil before put in those carrots Secondly! Situated directly across the street from NRG Stadium along Kirby, it's ideally placed to capture the slice of tourists and locals. Considering the wide selection of Japanese-inspired fare, the potential is there -- but unfortunately, the food is both overpriced and mediocre, much like their predecessor (#2). Things I appreciated: * Interior: I am fairly confident that one could show up with 20 people from a football game across the street and find a seat. There's enough seating in here to house an army and they've done a good job with the ambiance to keep the appearance of a faux-premium vibe. * Service: While they were generally slow on a few things, most of the staff members I've encountered were super pleasant and very transparent about what / what not to order. I appreciated this immensely. * Yakitori: No exaggeration, this is one of the better AYCE yakitori experiences I've had. The chicken and beef yakitori combos (#3) had great presentation, were juicy, and full of flavor. This was the only item where I wanted multiple orders. Things that are not great: * The price: This. My first time coming here it was $31 (Or ... $30.99), but the last time was $50. With that kind of a steep hike, you'd think they'd offer uni, toro, and some kind of premium yakitori, but too hard to justify considering their lineup of food and drink. * The name: Previously, it was simply "Taro Japanese Restaurant." As of earlier this year, it has become "Taro VIP BBQ SEAFOOD HOTPOT & BAR." * The drinks: I'm stoked they have an alcohol license and can serve wine, beer, and cocktails. But the cocktails are on another level bad. The Mexican Mule ($14.50) was too tinge too sour, the Taro Red ($14.50), Blue Hawaii ($13.50) and Tokyo Rose ($13.50) are way too sweet. Even the powdered milk teas and fruit teas felt very generic. * The sushi: I can handle low quality sushi, but there was some level of funk for almost all the salmon, tuna, and yellowtail that I ordered. It was masked a bit better in the rolls, but at some point, I couldn't order anymore. * The ramen: While I think offering any kind of ramen is a plus in the AYCE scenario, the ramen here is understandably mid. All of the tonkotsu choices are the best bet, but this is a hard pass for even folks that love noodle soup. * The spelling: While I'm typically forgiving of most menu mishaps, the fact one is being charged $50 and they can't seem to spell shoyu, fried, tartare, etc. correctly is kind of mind blowing. * Most of their baked sushi items: This includes their tataki, baby octopus, mussels, ankimo, and tartare. This is likely due to the seafood quality issue that I had alluded to earlier. * The crawfish: Skip. Don't bother ordering, even if it's peak crawifsh season since it tastes like something more from a Chinese buffet than anything resembling the kinds of crawdads from Louisiana. For a place that boasts being run by culinary graduates trained under a famous Japanese chef (#5), it's incredibly disappointing to such such variety paired with such flawed execution. One could argue Taro is more style than substance, but I hope they find a way to correct their course. ____________ (#1) All you can eat Japanese restaurant where everyone speaks Mandarin. (#2) Akashi: https://www.yelp.com/biz/akashi-houston-7 (#3) Calling all carnivores: This is your moment. (#4) "Shyoyu" "Fired" "Tartar" (#5) Takeshi Kaneko? Okay then.
