I never thought a restaurant in a random Marriott hotel tucked off west park would be a Houston must try restaurant but here we are. Staff was very friendly and attentive, the ambiance is about as good as you can get in a Marriott hotel, but the real star of the show here was the food. I will say the prices are a bit higher than Fungs or other dim sum classic spots in Houston. Still worth it, and their homemade hot sauce is amazing. It's a tapas style dim sum place, so if that is what you are into, like me, this is a must try. Pork buns were sweet and very tasty. They were not filled as much as I would like but the flavor is really nice. 8.9/10 Sui Mai was an excellent. No real notes. 9.3/10 Crystal shrimp dumpling was classic but the flavor was really nice paired with the hot sauce it's a 9.4/10 Crispy shrimp was by far the fan favorite. Really nice combination of flavors and textures. This is a must have. 9.5/10 The sticky ribs were not my favorite. I thought they would be traditional ribs. They were like steamed riblets. 4.5/10 Mushroom bao was interesting, it's a good dish to try I wouldn't get it again though. 6/10 The taro dumpling was my least favorite. Came for Houston Restaurant Weeks, and they were out of a third of the main courses. The long bao was excellent, the trio crispy was delightful, and the veggie egg rolls win my vote. The main course was a bit lackluster: hard egg noodles in a very bland gravy sauce. Since they didn't have the pork rice available, I settled for it, but I should have gone for the soup, the only item I was actually looking forward to. For a restaurant inside a hotel lobby? Not bad! I'd be back for the appetizers. Also, for the final course, we waited on our dessert only to watch the table next to us get theirs first (they ordered the same thing). I love the set up of this place. It gives such cozy and homey vibes. The teapots and tiny teacups definitely add to that. My dad got an oolong tea which came in the cutest teapot. It was piping hot and was the perfect thing to wake him up. I ordered an iced chrysanthemum tea. It tasted more like under-flavored water than a tea. It's also not sweet at all which is something to keep in mind if you have a huge sweet tooth like me. The service was nice but slightly cluttered. We had almost four waiters attempt to take our order which made me feel like it was a bit disorganized. Multiple times, our order was either given to the wrong table, or someone else's order was given to us. We ended up ordering the stir fry noodles, which to our delight, was able to be made vegetarian. My dad is allergic to eggs. So we specified many times with our waiter that there should be no egg in the noodles. Almost half an hour later we were given the stir fry noodles and my dad's face started to flare up. There was a lot of egg in the dish and he could not handle it being on the table. We told a staff member and they said they would give us an "immediate replacement" but that would only be true if immediate meant another thirty minutes of wait. We barely got an apology at all and it seemed as though they really didn't care. The noodles did taste good, but they weren't worth the wait. I had been itching to try this new restaurant since it opened in the Courtyard Marriott. The location of the dim sum restaurant is a little bizarre but it was popping off on Saturday night and the location kind of added to its appeal. We were seating immediately upon arrival and our server was prompt with our drink orders and walking us through the menu since it was our first time. We ordered a buuuunch of stuff to share. Our favorite dishes were the Cheung Fun (crispy shrimp and the vegetable), Chasiu Bao, Xiao Long Bao, but we really enjoyed everything we ordered. For dessert we tried both the lava and custard bao. They were both tasty but the lava bao was so unique. Not savory but not super sweet either. This was our first time having dim sum and we really loved it. Was husband's first dim sum experience and he's a fan now :) of everything we ordered, these were our favorite dishes in no particular order: -baked pork BBQ buns (never had these fried before and the crispy shell is so good. This was a perfectly balanced salty-sweet snack) -cheung fun w/ crispy shrimp -chive dumplings (this was recommended by our server!) -steamed spare ribs (I was worried they'd be tough since they were steamed, but nope!! They were literally fall-off-the-bone tender!!) My husband ordered a glowing ember (sp?) cocktail and loved it as well. Super smooth despite having mezcal. At first, you could tell they were short-handed servers and packed for dinner rush. But after some parties left....it felt like the second we finished a plate, it was being cleared by a server for the next dish. Incredibly fast and it's wonderful how collaborative the servers are with tables, I think we were attended to by at least 5 different servers throughout our meal. The ambiance is nice but not especially private depending on which table you are seated at. We were a party of 2 and it was definitely hard to avoid hearing the conversations of the tables on either side of us, also parties of 2. Additionally, this restaurant is located WITHIN the Marriott hotel. So their parking lot is shared with the hotel (and another business neighboring the hotel). There were still a few parking spots when we got there at 7pm. We went for dinner on good Friday expecting restaurants to be more empty but this place was packed! This is clearly an unassuming place (frankly an understatement as you read the rest of my review and see the photos); located inside of an easily-passed-by hotel on Westpark (which I've passed by 40 times and never seen this not-near-the-street hotel). Upon entering the hotel, I was immediately greeted by a hotel staff member who then directed me to the restaurant where I could request a seat. The restaurant looks like a lobby restaurant in a motel - definitely not fancy - one that I've skipped most morning where a free breakfast came with your stay. I was immediately seated and the server came by to ask me what I wanted to drink. They don't serve coffee (my preference), but they do serve tea. Ample parking. My favorite dish was the Chive Dumplings. Shrimp in a blanket was also excellent. The long bao was very good per my friend. The fried rice was average no better than any non-greasy fried rice you'd get in a decent chines restaurant. The service here was honestly spectacular, the gentleman that took care of our group on the day we came in was perfect for the role. He understood that for the uninitiated that the cuisine they work in can seem daunting at worst and unfamiliar at best, and he really made sure to bring an assurance to the dishes that were a bit different to American palates. The staff as a whole were dressed quite sharply, black slacks and button up collared shirt with ties, and it really classed up the whole situation. Back to the food, the majority of the menu has your standard dim sum staples that are crowd pleasers all around. The charsiu boa was extra pillowy and the filling was distinct and held up against all the bao. The siu mai and other dumplings stayed intact and all had flavorful filling and clean presentation. They set the table with a house made black vinegar and chili oil to accompany the small bites, and it was something unique feeling versus a big pot of kikoman like some spots do. Along with the faves they do some outside the box too, see the pictures in the review, but even the adventurous choices all tasted great. The location is the last thing I'll mention, because it is notable. Yes it is in a Courtyard Marriott, no it is not a weird as it sounds. They have a desk in the front of the lobby to welcome you before you have to wander the hotel, and once your seated the space is separate enough as to not being worth thinking about as you dine. read more

This was a recommended dim-sum spot and was a bit overdue for us to try it out. The location is really weird. The GPS took us inside a parking lot of a Courtyard Marriot; what the?!!! It looks like they turned the continental breakfast buffet area of the Marriot into a full on full service restaurant. Extremely odd setup for the hotel guests and the restaurant go'ers. Service was impressive. It was probably the best service in a Chinese restaurant that I've seen. The menu comprises of dim sum and some more Canto style dishes. The price point seems higher than a Fung's or similar dim sum spot. We ordered a bunch of their shareables and I think the general feedback was that everything tasted good and probably made in house but not fantastic. After quite a few recommendations, I decided to bring my boyfriend's family to Silk Road last night for us to all try their dim sum menu. When we arrived, the courtyard Marriott was a packed parking lot. We were able to snag a spot of someone who was leaving. The check in desk for Silk Road is right next to the check in desk for the hotel. We were a walk in and they were able to accommodate our group of 5 with no wait. There was a very loud performer playing in their bar area. He was pretty good, but we welcomed his set breaks so we could converse. Noah, our server, was awesome. He helped me pick fun dishes and a good amount of food for our party. We started with the chrysanthemum Tea, which was delicious and caffeine free. We ordered a variety of dishes, but the ones we liked the most were the Cheng fun crispy shrimp, the chicken puff, the xo sauce fried rice, the xiao long bao, the bbq pork buns, the egg custard and the off menu mango sago. I personally didn't love the beef noodle dish we ordered. Everyone else was really tasty. I would easily come back to eat more. The only other thing we didn't love was a sneaky "large group" auto gratuity on the toast receipt at check out. I typically don't call 5 people a large group. 6-8 people I can understand. Looks like Marriott is bringing higher end restaurants to some of their lower end properties. Silk Road on Westpark nestle inside of a Courtyard. It is a very good concept to up the value of the property and where patrons don't need to leave the hotel to have a good meal. For me I couldn't have many of the dishes as I was trying to lower my carbs, but the family wanted to come here so I went, figured Id find something and I did, the hot & sour soup was delicious. I could have order bowl after bowl of this. There were other options, but didn't realize it as I didn't notice they had a special's menu that had some items I could have ordered until after we were done. My family seemed to really enjoy the soup dumplings as they ordered multiple rounds of it. They also enjoyed the mushroom bao. The tea was very good as well. read more

Not knowing what to expect for an "Asian Tapas" restaurant in an unassuming hotel, we were pleasantly surprised with a delicious and fun meal-- 4.5/5 stars! Definitely pricey for the portion size (tiny and delicate) and dim sum, but everything was tasty and fresh. The interior was slightly on the more modern side and clean. Service was also great-- everyone was really friendly and seemed to enjoy being there. Our waiter, Tyler, seemed pretty knowledgeable about the menu. Favorites were the: - custard buns (creamy sweetness), - chive dumplings (chives and shrimp tucked within thin delicate wrappers), and - char siu pork buns (flavorful and sweet... but not too sweet! And not an off putting shade of pink or red). Also enjoyed the lava buns (a really good salted egg yolk flavor) and crispy shrimp cheung fun rice noodle roll (like a delicate tempura shrimp inside-- not only delicious but made it much easier to pick up!). Mushroom buns were fun to see in person since they looked so realistic, and the inside was an almost creamy mushroom mixture. Yum! My least favorite was actually Tyler's favorite menu item-- the Jenga radish cake. It's a spin on the traditional panfried luo bo gao; they cut the pieces into logs, fry them, and stack them up. The outside is extra crispy, and the inside is creamy and soft (too mushy for me, I like the slight bite of the OG version!). We're also not fans of bacon, and I think they used that instead of Chinese sausage. The XO sauce had a slight kick to it with a bit of that mala numbingness. Still tasty overall and fun to try, but I prefer the classic! Parking was super easy in front the hotel. Overall, the food is tasty and more on the delicate side. I appreciate the kitchen team trying to make traditional dishes a little more fun :D It won't be in the regular rotation as dim sum for two went over the $100 after tip (yikes), but we'll be coming back some evening in the future to try those noodles and more of the menu when the cravings hit! read more

Silk Road is a cute little restaurant located inside a hotel. I came here with a friend of mine to try various dishes, and I would recommend having a small party of 2-3 to share. I will say that, while there are a couple of vegetarian and chicken dishes on the menu, most dishes here either include either pork or shrimp so I would keep that in mind and review the menu beforehand if you have dietary restrictions. I personally had the mushroom bao, the Cheung Fun crispy shrimp rice noodle roll, the chicken puffs, the chive dumplings, the deep fried taro, and the X.O. Sauce fried rice to try with my friend. My favorite by far was the Cheung Fun crispy shrimp. The sauce was delicious, and the crispiness inside the smooth roll was honestly so fun to eat - I see why it gets its name! The XO sauce fried rice was my second favorite. The mushroom bao is so interesting - where it's a dumpling but looks like a full regular mushroom, but not sure if I would get it again. The chive dumplings were also good but not overwhelmingly impressive to me, and while I liked the filling of the deep fried taro, I didn't really enjoy the fried dumpling texture as much as I thought I would. The chicken puffs were also had to wait 15 minutes for, and this was actually my least favorite dish. It was more of a sweeter chicken curry and just overall not my vibe. Otherwise I liked my experience here. Side note - I will say that, while not the restaurant's fault, there was an annoying fruit fly by our table the entire night. Not sure how it got there because you have to go inside the hotel a bit to enter the restaurant, but it did lessen my enjoyment of the restaurant so had to mention. I'd read mostly positive things about this unique restaurant and wanted to try it. Unfortunately, I wasn't a fan of the Valentines Day dining experience. We'd purchased "tickets" in advance for a prix fix menu. It was rather expensive at $150/person but that included some fees and gratuity. We paid extra for the wine pairings. We have good appetites but were surprised we felt the need to order extra items beyond the prix fix inclusions. For $150/person of Dim Sum, I'd expect to leave stuffed. I fully understand this isn't meant to be your standard Houston Asia Town cheap dim sum. They definitely offer a unique upscale presentation like their "mushroom" dim sum but honestly nothing tasted extraordinary. The crispy shrimp was by far the best item we tried but I have no desire to come back here to repeat anything else. The service was solid overall but their videographer repeatedly took closeup footage of our table without asking. That was awkward and diminished the vibe. There was also an issue with the bill where they tried to double charge for the prix fix menu I'd already pre-paid for. This could've been an honest oversight but since they were promoting pre-paid "tickets" for that evening you'd think they would've confirmed before slapping us with a $500+ bill ($300 of which I pre-paid). read more

My friends and I tried out Silk Road for Houston Restaurant Week and it was good overall. I tried their Xiao Long Bao, steamed dim sum trio, hand pulled noodles with chili oil, and mango pudding. While everything was just good, the mango pudding was outstanding and the ripe mango flavor was delicious while being not overly sweet. Off the HRW menu, we also tried their mushroom bao. It was very realistic looking of actual mushrooms and the mushroom flavor was nice. They were busy for dinner time on the day we went, and while the staff was very friendly you could tell they were struggling to keep up. Truly top notch dim sum in an unassuming location. I thought Apple Maps took me to the wrong place when I pulled up to the Courtyard Marriott Hotel. The Silk Road signs at the entrance helped! And the gracious ladies at the hotel's front desk were extremely welcoming and helpful in pointing me to the right place. The dining room is attractive, boasting the clean, simple vibe of modern Japanese restaurants. I ordered my "usuals": Cheung Fun with Crispy Shrimp, Har Gow, and Fried Turnip Cake. All three were delicious and perfect rivaling those at my favorite dim sum places. But what blew me away was the Chef's Special: Abalone Tart. Oh. My. Goodness. The tart crust was a buttery short crust filled with roasted duck in a lovely velvety sauce and topped with a piece of abalone that had an amazing smoky flavor. It was an absolute triumph! I visited here with small group on a busy Sunday with no reservations and was still able to be seated....just at the bar area with a view of the pool...at a tiny little table. They offer made from scratch dim sum with homemade chili oil and have really good service. We tried the 1st four menu items (Cheung Fun with Crispy Shrimp. Sui Mai, Har gow, and xlb), with Stir-fried Noodles with beef, and Custard Bao. We also tried the Lemongrass Pandan Butterfly Tea. We then added a 2nd order of custard bun and a bbq pork bun. I found the custard bao to be pretty pricy at $10 for 2. However, it's high quality and you can taste the real vanilla, unlike the standard custard buns at other dim sum places. Chung Fun w Crispy Shrimp - probably my favorite due to the taste and texture and highly recommend. Stir fried noodles - really good and flavorful but if you're sharing with 4 people you won't get a lot as it comes on a small plate. Sui Mai- I thought it was pretty standard Har gow - same as above, pretty standard. Xlb - these are really good, but kind of small. You receive 5 in an order. Bbq Pork Bun - interesting and sweet with the sugar dough-pineapple bun, but good. Homemade chili oil and vinegar - I liked their chili oil a lot, as did the rest of my party. Tea - starts off blueish, then white, then purple. Interesting science involved here. However, I'm more interested in taste with my tea and I would have stuck with jasmine or tried a different one next time. Silk Road was excellent! The service was quick and the server was so nice and helpful. His recommendations were great. My family is an avid dimsum fam and we really enjoyed this(we've never had dimsum for dinner and upscale like this). While pricier, the quality has a noticeable difference. I'm staying at the hotel and didn't want to travel far for food, so I was thrilled to find such an exceptional restaurant right downstairs. I was blown away--it truly felt like a Michelin-star experience. The service was impeccable, the atmosphere was beautiful, and the food was absolutely to die for. The Cheung Fun Crispy Shrimp was by far my favorite--delicate on the outside yet perfectly crispy inside. The Jenga Turnip Cakes XO were a generous portion, loaded with flavor, bits of bacon, and just the right amount of spice. And the Lava Bao for dessert... wow. Much more of a dessert than I expected, but they insisted on serving it last for a reason. Incredible. They also offered palate cleansers and a sweet treat, so kind! I also tried the Lemongrass Pandan Butterfly Pea Tea, which actually changes colors--fun, refreshing, and delicious. The prices are amazing for the quality you get. Overall, this was a good dining experience. The restaurant is located inside the hotel, and we did not make a reservation though we probably should have. It's decorated in an Asian style, but it's still pretty chic and I really liked the lights. Another highlight was there were outlets behind me in the booth so you could charge your phone if you needed to (lol i always appreciate that but it's really irrelevant). Our server was very helpful in recommending options based on dietary restrictions. The menu is pretty limited to one page for food and one page for drinks, and it's dim-sum style so my friend and I ordered family style to share. My personal favorite was the xo rice with scallops and the chive dumplings. Everything was pretty well seasoned, though some of the dishes felt like they needed a bit more salt. The only warning I have is that they a often combina sweet and savory aspects in their dishes, so if you are not into that be careful when ordering. This was our second visit to Silk Road. It is in a Marriott and we are not used to eating at hotel restaurants besides the Post Oak when not away from Houston. So, don't expect a date night place, but a great lunch or brunch location. Their cocktail menu was great and they have a descent selection. Everything was delicious and we also got the Houston Restaurant Weeks menu. Be careful of the lava bao; it will explode if you just bite into it. Great service and great food. Cheers! Edit: for those saying that it is expensive dim sum, there is a price for good food. If you want lower quality and msg infused food that smells bad, there are plenty of places. If you want good ingredients and good service come here. I pick quality over quantity every time because I have one body and want to treat it like a Porsche and not a Kia. read more

Amazing and delicious food! All the dishes we tried were perfectly made- soup dumplings probably the best I've had in a long time. Har gow shrimp dumplings were thin skin and shrimp was crunchy. We ordered the crispy shrimp rice roll, eggrolls, ham sui gok which was delicious. Also got a noodle dish to share. Service was great, very attentive and we talked to a lady from Thailand for a little while. She told us about all the handmade items and about the chef who trained with some very good restaurants. My only negative for this place is that it is very pricey, so you have to be willing to pay $3 for each bite. The other dim sum places in Chinatown are easily half the price for a meal. Ambiance is also a bit strange that it is a high end restaurant/prices but it is in a courtyard Marriott so you can see the check-in counter from your table. I would recommend this place for the food and an occasional nice meal out. A bit too expensive for a regular go-to. read more

Silk Road is located inside the Courtyard Marriott. We booked a reservation on Open Table for 11 am when they opened. The restaurant itself was nicely decorated with a decent amount of seating. The tea cups on our table were unfortunately dirty with lipstick stains but were quickly replaced. The menu is limited compared to what's offered at typical dim sum places but we ordered enough for the two of us. They were out of the Cordysep Dumplings and ran out of Har Gow as I placed a to go order later in our meal. The staff were attentive and nice in general. The food itself was overall good but for the higher prices and small menu I will most likely stick to Bellaire. read more

There really is no comparison with the dim sum from Silk Road vs others in Houston and surrounding areas. It's the best dim sum in Houston - hands down. It's certainly more upscale than traditional dim sum restaurants, and while the price point is higher, it is WORTH IT! I don't often take the time to write a review, but having eaten at Silk Road for the first time yesterday, I had to say something. First off, when you go to the restaurant and you think you might be lost, you're not. It is actually in the lobby of the Marriott hotel on Westpark between Kirby and Buffalo Speedway. There are no signs for it anywhere, so it is definitely a 'hidden' gem. The staff was incredibly kind and knowledgeable, and the food was amazing. Definitely give this place a try. read more

A very elevated and different dim sum experience than the ones you get in Houston. Shrimp is plump, flavor is great, not loaded with fillers that makes you super thirsty. Presentation, quality, and service are all there. Highly recommended the Jasmine Silver Needle White tea if you're a jasmine tea lover. It's so fragrant and light on caffeine. The xo shrimp and scallop fried rice was really good! I will come back. Hope they expand their menu and maintain quality. read more

The three stars is for the quantity you get for the price. My food was really good. Lately it seems I been writing the same reviews for restaurants now for takeout orders. It's insane what u get now. The cost of everything is going up! I know the cost for ingredients for restaurants are going up as well. The Shrimp Cheung Rolls were tasty and also the Shanxi Noodles are good and spicy, but I felt hungry after eating these two items still, paying $41!. Shanxi Noodles cost $25 for the small amount that you get to go. Both were good, but I won't be back, base on serving size! . Also, the restaurant is inside of Marriott Resident hotel.
