There's a lot of choices for Dim sum in Houston, and we had heard good things about Ocean Palace. Happy that we weren't disappointed and we were impressed by the friendly service and great food. Even when it was busy on Father's Day morning, the staff did a good job of managing the crowd. Inside is a very grandiose and expansive dining room that was busy but not overly loud or uncomfortable. Immediately, the famous dim sum carts are coming your way with a fresh assortment of classics. My personal favorites were the fried taro ball and the shumai which were great, along with the duck. Overall, we were mostly satisfied with everything, and we noticed that staff were very accommodating to large groups and others. Everything tasted fresh and rivaled some of the better dim sum places I've been in other cities. It got very busy very quickly. This is a very big location that has push carts on the weekends. You can visit their website or google check in prior to your arrival to reserve your place in line. We arrived around 11 AM on Sunday and we signed in here and the wait with 20 parties ahead of us was approximately 15 minutes. That said, they're still busy as hell, so expect a wait- especially during weekend lunch hours. I went on a Saturday for a late lunch, and the place was packed. Surprisingly, we didn't have to wait very long. Our waitress was hyper as hell, and I loved it. She was goofy, sweet, and had no problem answering all of our questions. To start, I ordered the fried shrimp balls and shrimp shu mai. The shu mai was good... exactly what I expected. Nothing out of the ordinary, but solid. The fried shrimp balls were also good and pretty much what I was expecting. Honestly, it's probably the closest I can get to Trini-Chinese dim sum in Houston lol. I just need more hot sauce! For my entrée, I got the fried lobster with salt and pepper seasoning- duh, that's what I grew up eating. Back in the day, it was one lobster for $20! These days it's about $33 a plate, which is still pretty reasonable considering it's lobster and the portion is hefty. I ate the whole plate myself and honestly could've gone for more. This is a MUST in Asia Town Houston! Dim sum is nice because it's easily shared with others at the table so people can try a little bit of everything. The restaurant is very large and grand. Large, busy parking lot. Dim sum was very good. You can order from your server or select from the carts that are pushed by periodically. There may be a slight language barrier but Staff is friendly. This is by far the best dim sum spot in Houston and a must visit for any first-timers in the city. Palace is in the name because it is exactly that. Once you walk in, you just notice how grand everything is. It feels like walking into a luxurious banquet hall and has a very professional vibe. In terms of food, they deliver on all the classics like the har gow and pork ribs in black bean sauce. Finally decided to try dimsum here-- think I was reminisicing my Hong Kong trip a little too much... Side note: after eating dimsum in HK, honestly nothing will top it. BUT. It doesn't mean it was terrible. I think the issue was that I came at around 3PM and some of the baked options were sold out. It bummed me out because you'd think they'd know their popular menu items and keep it available throughout the day...but lesson learned! I always, always, always get the crab claw anytime I see it. But this was a big letdown. It didn't taste fresh, it gave throwing it in the oven to reheat after a day or two. The worst one on the table had to be the turnip cake. It was super bland and it had the biggest portion out of everything. My favorite had to be the fried shrimp chive dumplings. I've only ever been aware of the steamed version and had no idea there's a fried version out there. It was fried at the right temperature with just enough filling and very flavorful. The shrimp dumpling and rice roll shrimp was also good; I feel like those two, you can't ever go wrong ordering them from any dimsum spot. The last time I was here, it was years ago. Today I woke up with the craving for dim sum from Ocean Palace, so here I am. There are typical dishes that I will get in a dim sum place - har gow, pork and century egg congee, rice rolls, buns, pan fried flat rice noodles, and tofu pudding. I had those dishes and they were ok. The har gow could use fresher and bigger shrimps. The congee lacked ginger in it, but the texture was good. The rice rolls weren't smooth and thin enough. The flat rice noodles and tofu pudding were good. As for the matcha bun, the matcha was only at the top of the bun. There wasn't any matcha taste, and there should be lava custard inside but mine was dry. Also had the tofu skin roll which was very oily. The service was good and quick. The restaurant would get very noisy, and it would be difficult to talk without letting tables near you hear about your conversation. The restaurant is very popular. You typically don't expect service to hit flying colors, but the culture is that you do expect the food to speak for itself. We ordered dim sum and it was quite the disappointment. **Chinese broccoli (gai lan) with oyster sauce: huge disappointment. Traditionally served as blanched Chinese broccoli in oil and toss in oyster sauce. However, it was served as steamed with oyster sauce on the side. This is incredibly lazy on part of kitchen staff! **Shui Mai: it was okay, nothing to really write home about. **Hai Cao: likewise, met expectations but definitely was not wowed. ** Chung Fung rice rolled in chinese donut: a very unique dish that I don't often see in most dim sum places. My niece had been here before since she's a student at Rice University... and she approved! Dimsum is a feast type of meal where everyone gets a little of everything. There's something for everyone! I liked the savory dumplings with chives - the pan-fried ones were better than the steamed ones, in my opinion. Some people like the sweet selections like the custard tarts (don tot)... these were just ok for me. The crust could be better. I prefer a crisper, flakes crust. My niece's favorite are the cream-filled buns. I honestly could pass on those... The shrimp dumplings (ha gow) were average while the pork ones (siu mai) were surprisingly more tasty than the shrimp! I have an uncle who always likes to go here. Whenever I visit, he invites me to go eat and inevitably he takes me here. It's like his special occasion spot. So over the years, I've been here quite a few times and have seen how it's changed. During my most recent visit in Fall 2025, I was surprised to see some renovations to the place. Previously I remember food service being in a large dining hall upstairs. That may or may not still exist, but at least this time, during a weekday lunch, we were ushered into a ground-level dining area that was much nicer what what I recall upstairs. I saw wine bottles and such, suggesting they do dinner service too, but when I asked I was told they don't. Anyways, we sat down and ordered various items of dim sum. They give you a sheet and a pencil and you mark what you want. Despite the more "upscale" vibe they have here now, the service is still very standard for most Asian restaurants along Bellaire. That is to say, they take your order and then forget about you unless you flag them down. Not a complaint -- I actually get kind of put off by constantly being asked whether I'm enjoying my meal. However, even though we marked what we wanted to order, they forgot to bring an order of bao buns I wanted. They didn't charge for it. They just didn't even see the order. Food was not bad but certainly not good, either. It was just adequate. I remember in years past really enjoying the food here -- crystal shrimp dumplings, xiu mai pork dumplings, chicken feet, Chinese broccoli, etc -- but this time, the food was a bit meh. For example, although my family has it as one of our favorites, my cousins have it way lower. I personally love their food. Every dish you get is never under salted and is always very juicy. Some of my favorites are the Shrimp Rice Rolls and Shrimp Shu Mai. Went here most recently with some family friends who aren't very familiar with the cuisine and they seemed to enjoy it a lot as well. At a certain point, all the dishes start to get to you, and at that point it it's important to STOP ordering. Make sure to order some kind of tea to wash everything down and fill your plate with hot oil and soy sauce to dunk everything in. Trust the process and enjoy yourself! Service/Ambiance: Waiters are a little slow at times, but the carts during the daytime are always so nice and the ambiance is really upscale and expansive. The upstairs that they used before for Dim Sum was always so overwhelming, but the new downstairs dining hall is really nice and well furnished. Always such a good time here. I also recommend the rice roll with chinese donut and shrimp paste. This is a dish that I don't see often if ever at other dim sum places and I love the chinese donut soaking up the sweet soy sauce!
