I don't usually check my receipt in detail and I discovered they CHARGED ME A CREDIT CARD FEE when I paid cash. I told them about this and they tried to act like they didn't charge me. They gave no apology or admit fault. It clearly shows in the receipt they added it. I asked for a refund because I was too afraid they were going to spit on my to-go order when I complained about the credit card fee charge. They wouldn't give back my receipt so I can post it as proof -- So, check your receipt that they don't charge you a credit card fee when you paid cash. I felt like for dim sum the food was slow to come out at first ( I was told that they make it to order ) so that's perhaps why. It was empty when we first arrived then it started picking up. After trying several places, HK Dim Sum is my go to dim sum spot in Houston! They consistently deliver super fresh, hot, and tasty dim sum dishes. On a weekday the place isn't too crowded, but they're usually bustling until close on the weekends! My favorite orders are the eggplant stuffed with shrimp and the crystal shrimp dumplings. The servers are super nice, and I've even seen them give free dessert (the egg tarts) to everyone in the restaurant! The one item I'll say was subpar from their menu was the fried breadsticks - they were super dry and crunchy, which is not how they should be. I'm not sure if this was a fluke, so I'm thinking of trying it again and seeing if they redeem themselves. Overall, will continue to visit HK Dim Sum again and again! read more

I've walked by this unassuming place many times over the years and i FINALLY got to try it. Man, what a treat. I think every single dish I ordered was amazing (and we ordered quite the variety). Everything from spare ribs, chicken feet, shrimp noodle, sticky rice, shumai, tripe, congee, fried taro, etc. Everything was excellent in flavor, texture, freshness. Its a small restaurant so there are no carts, which i prefer, because everything comes out fresh steamed or cooked from the kitchen; way better in my opinion. I was thinking for about a week of where to go for Dim Sum. There are many places that offer it around the city. But one restaurant had me curious to try: HK Dim Sum. I would often overlook it since it is in a very busy plaza and was lucky dine in during a slower time in the day. I went with what I would typically order on a menu. The fried taro puffs, Chinese broccoli with oyster sauce, har gow, siu mai, custard buns and egg tarts. My cousin added on the steam shrimp rice noodle as well. Of course I had to get some Jasmine green tea too. Very flavorful all around and I was very lucky to have ordered the last egg tarts for the day. I was please with everything but definitely remembered my lesson to not over order. I am ashamed to find out I was always walking past HK Dim Sum when it is a solid choice and just enough seats all around not to feel too crowded. This is my new favorite dimsum place. I was pleasantly surprise hiw good the food was. The beef tendon noodle soup is good, the shrimp and pork shumai, the chicken feet and even tyr shrimp dumpling. The taiwanese style dumpling is a little bit let down, the wrapper is thick and there's not a lot of soup, the fried turnip cake is very crispy and flavorful. Located in the Dun Huang Plaza the restaurant is not very large and the chairs are kind of cramped. Came on a Friday afternoon with my dad for a quick snack around 1 pm and the restaurant was pretty empty. We ordered ha gao, shrimp rice rolls, and chicken feet. The food came out hot. I had originally plan to go to Dim Sum King for a late Sunday Dim Sum session after a long drive in from Austin. However, I came back into town pretty late and DSK was going to be closed by the time I got in so I decided to go to the next best thing, HK Dim Sum, since it closed later on a Sunday night than DSK. Food was legit - I had a friend who was visiting in town and she pretty much loved everything that she'd tried. However, the service here was pretty meh even for Chinatown standard. When we'd ask for something from the waiter (like an extra sauce, for example), he wouldn't even acknowledge that he'd heard us and would just leave and then came back with an extra sauce. The only time that he would acknowledge us for anything is when he didn't hear or understand what we wanted. I mean, is hospitality dead in here? When I received the check, a 15% tip was already added to our total bill. There were THREE people in our party!! I didn't realize that this place would add an automatic tip for a party of three people. I don't think I've ever been to a restaurant where a tip is automatically added unless there's at least six people in a party. I mean, I was going to tip at least that anyway, but had I not checked that the tip was already added, I probably would've double tipped because I wouldn't have been expecting that automatic tip on the bill. We come every time we're in town and they always leave stuffed and happy. Second, you need to understand how things work here. The staff are extremely efficient. They bring you the menu, you pick your items, and the kitchen starts making it. You get the food served hot, as it becomes ready. Very different style than in American restaurants. So accept it and eat it as it comes up. Also, know that when you finish a dish they will scoop it up to make food for the next thing. It's their world, we just live in it, ok? We got congee, shumai, shrimp balls, and tea. The only thing holding me back from giving this place one star was the tea. It was freshly brewed and refreshing. On the other hand was the food. I've heard a lot of mixed reviews about this place and figured one day I would try it out for myself. We ended up here for Saturday brunch because our usual breakfast place was closed. Its usually a good sign when a dimsum place is made to order, but all of the dishes here were underwhelming. We came at 12:15, put in our order quickly and it was 1:00 before our first food item came out. Things we tried: Shrimp dumplings 7/10 - the best thing we ordered here honestly. Potstickers - 5/10- they were fried well but the filling was just so so Beef chow fun - 3/10 (there were literally 4 pieces of beef in the entire plate- see photos). How can you charge almost $12 for this?! Chinese broccoli w/ oyster sauce - 7/10 this tasted just fine but not sure why it took 45 min+ for this to come out. It's the simplest item on the menu to make... just boiled broccoli and oyster sauce from the bottle... Chinese fried doughnut 油条 - they were sooo small and not satisfying. I have bought frozen ones from the Asian market that were larger and more tasty Congee- 4/10 again should've been very quick to come out as it's usually premade since it's supposed to be simmered for hours for more flavor. But I felt they had to make it on the spot because it tasted very bland. There was also very little meat/duck egg inside. Sesame balls - 6/10 these tasted decent they just took ages to come out I understand some of the fried items take longer to prepare, but the Chinese broccoli and congee should honestly not take much time so it was disappointing to wait so long for our food. On top of that it was a rip off that there was so little meat in the food we ordered. Probably the worst dim sum I've had and I've tried dim sum from all over the country. Everything was bland and lackluster. I had to drench everything in soy sauce to get some sort of flavor. Their siu mai was unusually pale and looked really unappetizing (and tasted like it too). Other classic dishes like turnip cake and cheung fun were so oily and greasy, making it difficult to eat more than a couple of bites. The chicken feet had an odd aftertaste, but were big and cooked well so that's something I guess. I came because I was recommended it, but I was highly disappointed. First , the server, we were just about to be seated (4 of us) then she immediately asked for what drinks we want, without giving us a chance to sit first and check for the menu , then we all decided just to order for a regular Coke, then she just put the menu and piece of paper with a pen on the table and left and came back and served our drinks without asking us if we know how to place an order , maybe the server assumed that we know how , but even then she should be accommodating, then she came to our table and and then just grabbed our order and again without asking us to clarify our orders and I was the one who told her that we need to order the other items and she said yes I know! Then came back and just marked one of our order telling us that they run out of that custard and without asking us if we have other option! Then, i have noticed that the other server was haunting a customer from outside and we were curious why she is doing that ? Because we saw that the customer who just left paid their bill. Then as they serve our food , it was ok at first though it was not serve at the same time and maybe because they their kitchen were busy . The server went to our table and grab a piece of napkin and wipe the cover of a chili jar and ask telling us to cover the jar since we are done eating!! Wow! Can she not do it when all of us leave ?? This is the part that every customer should be aware of!! When we paid our bill i left them with 10$ tip only because we were not happy with their service! We know that the minimum is 15% but as a customer we have the right bot to follow the minimum tip especially if the service and the food is not really that good! But the lady threatened us that she will add more tip into our bill! Then she turned her back and started to talk shit about us in her language. She has the nerve to ask why we only give her 10$ tip and I was honest enough to tell her that its because of their service and why would she threatened us that she will add more tip to our bill!! Can she really do that?? Dont she think that we can always dispute the amount if she will really do that?? Now, it makes sense why she kept on haunting the customer when they left after she check the total balance if the customer has really left a 15% tip! While with my elderly mom and dad, they tried to auto-grat us for 5 people without letting us know AND the policy does not exist.
