4.5 stars Our friends brought us some Shanghai Restaurant for dinner and we had salt and pepper ribs, house special tofu, beef cubes with mushroom and asparagus, and sautéed on choy. Per our friend, their salt and pepper ribs are the best they've had in Houston, and I would agree. It was crispy, flavorful, and the meat was tender. Yum! Definitely the highlight of the meal. The beef cubes with asparagus and mushrooms was good too. Beef was nice and tender and flavor was good. The house special tofu was a surprise box as it literally had everything in it! There was beef slices, chicken chunks , squid, shrimp, charsu, bamboo in addition to deep fried pieces of tofu. I enjoyed the dish, but maybe because there were too many things in it I would probably try something else next time, before you're not sure which protein you're going to get each time. Sautéed on choy was good as well. I can't comment on the service or ambience since we didn't dine in. However, overall enjoyed the place and would love to return to try other dishes (as well as reorder the salt and pepper ribs. read more

Hadn't been back in a long while, but we came here to celebrate the Lunar New Year. This restaurant is another OG in Houston. They have been around for as long as I can remember. Don't be fooled by its English name, you will not be eating Shanghainese food here: this is a traditional Cantonese restaurant. In typical Chinese American fashion, we had the "adult" table and of course we sat at the "kids" table. We ordered the classics as pictured. The food is always tasty and consistent. Service is friendly and the even though this spot is no frills, it is a familiar place with a very family-centered atmosphere. You can not go wrong with old reliable. If you are ever craving authentic, traditional Cantonese cooking without the large, dim sum hybrid model, I definitely recommend this place. My parents needed to pick up some Chinese New Year goodies at Welcome Food Center so we figured we'd grab dinner nearby. We had eaten here years ago before the whole shopping center was remodeled. We arrived around 5:00 PM for dinner and were seated quickly. The food came out fairly quickly and was flavorful. It was four of us so we ordered: Hot & Sour Soup, Beef with Bitter Mellon, Beef Flat Rice Noodle (dry), Cantonese Sweet & Sour Pork (with pineapple) I was impressed how silky and tender the beef was. The sweet & sour was perfect lightly battered and crispy. The hot & sour could've been a bit more sour but had a small kick to it. It was perfect for my parents, but my husband and I had to add some chili oil & soy sauce for more flavor. The quality of the food 9/10, the price was a bit on the pricey side for the portions of the dishes. The hot & sour soup was $17! It wasn't anything special about it. I thought it was a bit steep for a family size, but I guess good service made up for it. I'm not sure if they were offering Chinese New Year specials, but within an hour there were several big parties with reservations. I recommend this place for authentic Cantonese Chinese food. Don't be fooled of the name thinking it's Shanghainese food, but it's not; instead, it serves traditional Cantonese food that is not dim sum in a place that looks like an old-school Chinese restaurant. However, the food is worth it since the salted pork spare ribs (which is one of their specialties) were delicious. The beef chow fun was okay, but it could use a little more seasoning. Overall, if you're looking for soup dumplings and other Shanghainese food, this is not the place since those are not on the menu. read more

Sautéed Egg Plant - they did not have a beef ribs for the eggplant and beef rib clay pot so we pivoted to sautéed Egg Plant. The eggplant was tender and the flavor was so good. Baby Bok Choy and Chicken - Bok choy had good texture and the chicken was tender and moist... Had to dock it one star because we returned and it just wasn't the same. Ordered the peking style ribs again and it was pretty bad. Could tell it had been fried and refried because the outside was not crisp. It was just tough and the meat was overcooked. Tried the house special tofu too - it wasn't bad but not the best tofu I've had, so can only give it a 3.5/5. This time, the water spinach was also not great. It was mostly the thick stems with no leaves. Very disappointed by the lack of consistency - wish it was as good as the first time. Adding this to my pocket list of Chinatown restaurants. The English name of this restaurant is super misleading because you think it's Shanghainese food but it's actually Cantonese. This review is based on my takeout order. The salted pork spare ribs were definitely a standout dish. My husband said we should've ordered 2 of them lol. Even after the 30 min drive back they were still crispy, tender and juicy. The black bean rice noodle had good wok hei and wasn't overly salty. It was spicier than I expected since they added chili peppers and jalapeños but I enjoyed it. The Cantonese style sweet and sour chicken was good but nothing stood out compared to other restaurants serving the dish. The last thing we ordered was the beef pot, which came a lot more saucy than I expected, but the beef taste was still very strong, and they gave good portions of meat. Overall enjoyed all the dishes a lot as the taste of this place kinda straddles between the homemade and restaurant tasting line. Dishes aren't overly salted or enhanced with MSG which I appreciate. They also have a lunch special that seems to include weekends so will have to come back to try that. read more

Friendly staff, but portion sizes were too small! Okay food, but lots of hit and misses so just try the soup and some signature dishes you might recognize. Unlike the name, this is owned by a Cantonese-speaking family and most dishes were Hong Kong- and Guangzhou-style. The most authentic Hong Kong-style dish we tried was definitely the eggplant with chicken--had it in Hong Kong and we definitely taste the similarities here! Fried rice and seafood rice porridge were both a bit too oily for our taste... Fried calamari was tough and tasteless. Soup was great but mediocre. Walnut shrimp was also very good but again, portion size was too small for a family of four to have more than two each. Pork ribs advertised on the sign at the entrance were mediocre as well. Beef slices in a sweet & sour sauce marinade was, again, too oily as well. Over a table of food filled with nine dishes (including the fried rice, soup, and porridge), the only dish that made the a-little-less-than-$200 price worth it was the eggplant. read more

It was cold winter in the middle of the week. I didn't know the closing time but I saw a couple still eating there. I ordered pepper ribs and a bowl of rice. I didn't think of anything but realized the employees are eating... Appeared to be eating dinner as end of their shift. Oh shoot I said. One employee came to me and said, "no hurry. You can stay until you're finished." Wow. So nice. Yeah. I hate to be rushed. It was actually my first-time dining in. I loved the decorations and those home feeling. No wonder it's been featured by Chow Down in Chinatown group many times. For the same reason I recommended my neighbor brought her family to dine here tonight. Used to love coming here. It was my go to for take out but the quality has been so inconsistent lately. Sometimes it's good but other times it's so bland. I always get the salt toasted tofu but the last time I got it they must've went really light with the salt. If it weren't for the peppers it would've tasted like nothing. The only thing that's consistent is the Mongolian beef. It's always good but they give you so little beef now. Idk I like this place but it's such a letdown whenever the food comes out so plain. This use to be one of my favorite Cantonese restaurants. Recently the quality has really declined. They use frozen peas and carrots in their soups which gives it that freezer smell. The salt and pepper ribs are dry and don't have much meat. Service is pretty slow but it isn't anything out of the ordinary. read more

I've been dining here for almost 2 decades when their location was closer to Fiesta on Bellaire. I know the husband/wife owners as he is the chef while she manages the register. I remember seeing the chef on his wife beater shirt chatting with patrons while the wife never had a good attitude serving customers. There're a few other Cantonese restaurants throughout the years and I haven't been back since 2018 until yesterday. We were deciding where to have lunch and my husband pointed at Shanghai restaurant thinking they serve xialongbao. Well, their restaurant's name is mis-leading as it's a Cantonese restaurant and almost everyone speaks Cantonese. It has been a long time and I thought why not? The place was completely empty for a Sunday's lunch around 12:30 pm. The server greeted us with paper menus and seated us afterwards. I wasn't sure if they are still owned by the same couple but turned out yes! I saw their now adult son sitting in the back. We got a couple of rice plates: beef with bitter melon and fish filets with veggies. I also ordered their poached chicken (1/2 chicken) served cold and dip with ginger scallion sauce. Both rice plates tasted good; lots of rice but small portion in terms of proteins/veggies. The chicken dish was average but the ginger sauce helped. I love this and always get more in the past. I have never been charged extra for the sauce. Naturally, I asked for more. I was surprsied to see $1 for the ginger sauce. While I don't mind paying for it but think the waitress should inform us first. In addition, if the chicken has more flavors, we probably don't need so much sauce to eat with. A favorite place for us!! Ventured back since pandemic (been awhile) and found the same friendly faces and fantastic foods. Ms Queenie, not there today, once told us her food was Cantonese style. Her sister runs it now and she's an absolute joy and remembered us! Newly remodeled and fresh in red decor the place seems nicer new and fresh. Our dishes were absolutely fantastic. We were told no beer or wine license and no mention of BTOB. The entire Plaza has been remodeled and adds alot to be seen. Casual dining atmosphere and unrushed. Check for hours of operation. Thanks dad. Never would have ever known this spot existed if not for my dad. It's in the Welcome shopping plaza. The place is close to his doctor's office and he noticed that they advertised congee. My dad loves congee (rice porridge). So we deviated from his usual spot to try this place. We went during off peak hours so it was empty. We were seated quickly and then left to our for a bit. It looks to be family owned based on the banter between the people. The only thing that was uncomfortable was a man walked in who clearly worked there and started to admonish the older lady that was working in the back area. My dad was very upset by this and didn't like the manner in which he spoke to her. We ordered the plain congee, yes plain. And the beef with vegetable chow fun (w/gravy) and a side of white rice. My dad enjoyed the congee esp since they didn't add any extra seasoning to it. Some places add seasoning to the plain congee and he doesn't like that bc sometimes it makes it salty. This was perfect and the waitress made sure it was extra hot (tempature not spice) as my dad requested. The chow fun was delicious. Just wish there was more noodles. It was very moist and flavorful. Overall it was a nice experience. There is a broad and diverse menu and I would love to go back and try more yumminess. read more

Extremely disappointing with the service. We've been here once and the staff was so sweet for our first time so we came again. The staff shared at that time how she had great memories eatingGeneral Tso there since she was little and now worked there, she made our day that time. We came again 5 ladies (including our mom because it's Mother's Day and one child 9 years old) .The restaurant opens at 12pm we got there 12:40 and it was busy due to Mother's Day or maybe just because it's a Sunday. We were behind a group of three elderly people and they went in easily being assisted by a young woman. You could say that it was because they are a smaller party it went smooth. When waiting to be attended we asked a man who looked at us (possibly the manager) but did not approach us to help if we could get a table for 6. We thought at most we'd be told to wait since it was busy. He just said no and pointed around to show the table of people (all who looked at us and we could only assume he meant it was busy) and said there was no space. I asked if there was a wait time as that's the most appropriate way to ask or be told when coming in to a restaurant. He just shooked his head and when we just stood there a bit taken a back, he then realized that was not what we asked and said an hour(we thought that's objectively an average wait time is normal) What was unprofessional was the fact that there was tables( maybe we thought they didn't have enough staff and that was the reasoning behind the odd behavior), they did not ask us to wait inside, and it felt as if we were ushered out as another employee was making there way towards our side to squeeze her way, so we just told our party to let's go outside and "wait". The shocking part was when this staff member turned off their OPEN sign. We definitely did not feel welcomed at that point. At no point were we disrespectful nor was there a language barrier/miscommunication issue. We saw more people enter and we noticed they did not come outside like we did. They probably weren't told they had no space. The light was turned back to reflect open like the picture below. More people went inside within the few minutes we had left outside. They must have thought we left but we only had moved to the side to gather our thoughts if to leave or wait the hour since there wasn't a list or place to put our phone numbers (which honestly not a problem; it's everything else that transpired that was weird). Was it prejudice? Were they just extremely busy and overworked? I want to think better of others but actions say otherwise. What it definitely was, was unprofessional and disappointing. While grocery shopping at Welcome Food Center, I suddenly craved Chinese food and decided to try this unassuming spot. Though it may not have the glitz and glamour of newer, fancier places, the restaurant is clean and surprisingly busy, with about ten sizable tables occupied. I ordered a dish to go, and the service was exceptional. Despite not dining in, the front desk staff were friendly and informed me there might be a slight delay due to being short-staffed in the kitchen. I appreciated the heads-up and found it completely understandable. When I returned, the staff continued to impress with their attentiveness--they asked if I wanted water while I waited and kept me updated on the progress of my order. This is the kind of service that makes supporting local businesses worthwhile. The food was excellent, and I'm looking forward to trying their salted toasted pork ribs and other dishes. Ordered to go during the covid lock down. We ordered the black pepper chicken with mushroom and asparagus, snow pea leaves, toasted ribs, salt pepper squid and house tofu. I was told over the phone that the house tofu takes a while so it would be at least 20 minutes. I arrived after 20 minutes and my order still wasn't ready. It was pretty disorganized because after waiting for about 10 minutes at the restaurant they told me they didn't make my house tofu dish and that if I still wanted it I would have to wait another 20 minutes for it...Not sure how they messed that up unless they gave my order away to someone else. I did not end up getting to try the tofu dish but everything else tasted really good. read more

What is - as of now - unconfirmed, is that cops have temporarily relocated from Shipley Donuts to Shanghai because of the deliciousness of the Beef with Mushroom dish. What to order: Beef w/Mushroom What not to order: Me around Came here to play word games (Shangman), and chill with some friends (were were just Shanging out). Thought it was an airplane shangar or a Star Wars-themed place (named after Shang Solo), but it was neither. The beef with mushroom was the real star of this restaurant. It was absolutely delicious from the first bite until the last. And a nice happy portion too. I'll definitely order it again next time I go back. The wings were a little dry, but very tasty. I would re-order them as well. They're one of the most popular dishes on the menu, but the beef was the clear winner. The tofu was not wet enough and not flavourful or spicy enough although the texture was really nice. It was a three or four. If I'd only ordered the tofu, there's no way I'd have given this place 5 stars. Overall the restaurant is a five-star Place, but some of the food was somewhat disappointing. The prices and service are pretty good and it would definitely come back here again for the two aforementioned dishes and other new stuff as well. A good place for a sit down Chinese family dinner. The dishes are aplenty and range from soups to casseroles, claypot rice to seafood (whole fish, fish filet, shrimp, and more), Chinese vegetables to fried noodles and rice. Service is mostly efficient but needs prompting at times. The servings are also on the smaller side compared to other competitor restaurants. Everyone raves about the ribs and I agree that they are awesome, as the family usually orders two instead of one plate. The special "pei pa" deep fried tofu is also an honorable mention. I am usually a huge fan of honey walnut shrimp (super small portion for price and not enough dressing) but this wouldn't be the place to get it unless this will be the last meal you'll ever have. read more

I'm so glad to be back in the amazing city of Houston. Something I love about my city is how diverse it is and the different places you can discover new food at. My little bro and I checked out @shanghai_restaurant_htx in Bellaire and holy sh*t it's delicious. We had fried egg-rolls for appetizer but they were so good that I wasn't able to take a pic. I also had fried beef w/ flat noodles which was amazing but the star of the meal had to have been the fried salted toasted spareribs. They needed no sauce and they were hot, crunchy, and full of flavor. Unfortunately due to the coronavirus pandemic, many local Asian restaurants are losing sales so make sure you support local Asian restaurants and discover new food while doing so. Before I mouth off this review, please be aware that this restaurant does not serve Shanghainese, the word Shanghai in the name is just a name not indicative of cuisine. I came here instead of a grand steakhouse because of the reviews of the tofu and the salt n peppa spare ribs. I was all, "a Texas steak sounds amazing, but the tofu and spare ribs just had that edge I was looking for" And that they were... The tofu was nicely unique, had the texture of soft omelet cakes on the inside, light, crunchy and delicious on the outside. Never had this kind but was worth the visit. The spare ribs were ooooh so delish, yes, never had this either: loved the kick the pepper imparted and the nice sodium edge to this yet another crispy dish. I love texture, ha ha!. The noodles were also very good, strikingly Cantonese, not Shanghainese noodles. So, the service was so awesome, my waitperson kept coming back checking for oolong tea and water refills, and asked if I liked the food. Maybe she knew I was gonna Yelp the resto, 'cause I was taking pics, LOL She packed up my leftovers she said, I "shouldn't be wasting food" I responded, "I would love to take them home, I'm staying at a hotel". She said, "Ill be right back" and carted off the food. She comes back with them packed ready for the microwave and gave me some chopsticks. Nice, happy to be cared for by my Chinese mama. I love both Americanized Chinese food and traditional Chinese food and this definitely falls into the later category. I've been here twice in very different situation and both times been pleased but not blown away. We had a large group in one of the rooms off to the left one busy Saturday night. About 15 of us squeezed in around one of the circular tables. The staff was nice and accommodating and efficient. We've also been here midweek for dinner and the place was dead. Favorites foods: egg rolls, sweet and sour pork (delicious!), and the shrimp with walnuts (the mayo on them isn't for everyone but I loved it!) Least favorite: roasted duck (when a table of 15 leaves this uneaten, you know it isn't very good). The price is right at under $10 per person. There is plentiful parking in the huge lot, and if they are too busy, you can always walk to one of the other restaurants in the same strip mall. Notable: It's BYOB and a lot of people walk down to the store and get six packs of beer to share at a table (didn't see any wine, it's a beer kind of place). read more
