Hard to find this place. GPS was not helpful. If it wasn't for the sign along with others to point toward an alley of an outer mall, we almost turned around. Parked in a large lot that shares with others in this large strip mall. Look for the central location between 2 long strip malls attached. Walk inside though dark and looks like nothing is there... you keep going till it shows on your right. Not very large restaurant, old, shabby, a dive but the service and food was very good. Expected prices to be much lower since it was not the elegant restaurant you would bring a date, but it was still fairly reasonable. We arrived here on a Friday after work and were seated right away. Nice clean place. You're given a sheet with all the dim sum and you just check off what your want. Price point Is a but steeper than other places. The congee with beef was perfect! The shrimp dumpling, fried crab and shrimp, short ribs in black bean sauce, yellow mung bean buns, sesame red bean balls, and Chinese broccoli were all deliscious and very flavorful. This is a good standby for dim sum when the more other well known dim sum places are closed down for the evening. Their dim sum that stands out are the shu mai, fried shrimp wonton, and surprisingly, Shanghai style dumplings. Surprising because I wasn't expecting good Shanghaise food here in a place named for Cantonese/Hong Kong. Their rice rolls dim sum dishes were a bit lackluster because the rice rolls were so thick - I prefer thinner ones wrapping the shrimp. Prices are good and food filling. We also had a guy that was great and caring to his guests. We enjoyed the experience. Located in the newish 2-story Asian shopping strip mall. Plenty of parking. Oh my goodness - quite honestly the worst dim sum I've EVER had.... I've had good dim sum, also have had mediocre dim sum...but bad dim sum? This was certainly a first. My first time coming and I'm def not returning. We came in for a late lunch to a nearly empty restaurant. We ordered: -shrimp dumplings - mediocre -fried pork dumplings - TERRIBLY executed. the fried dough was SO heavy and oily. there was barely any meat inside. not even a spoonful. I'm not one to waste food but we did not finish this -chinese broccoli - ok, can't mess this up -pork dumplings - this took THIRTY minutes to come out....absolutely no apology/excuse from them. they must've given our order to another table that came after us. Dim Sum King is a gem for several reasons. Sure, it's not something that will blow a connoisseur's mind away. But we've been here a handful of times and their food has always been consistently good. Reliability - It means something. I love how it's smaller than some of the dim sum giants (i.e. Fung's Kitchen), because if we're craving it on a whim, we know we're not going to be waiting around an hour just to get seated. Every time we've stopped by during lunch time on a weekend, it's never taken extremely long. I really appreciate how their menu has photos of all their items, since some dishes have different names at different establishments. They also have a rewards program and all you need to do is give them your phone number. For every $100 you spend, you get $10 off your bill. Pretty sweet deal! read more

We came to Chinatown to run some errands and ended up in this parking lot. We walked around saw this spot was busy and gave it a try. The restaurant is tucked in a weird alleyway and to your right side. The interior of the restaurant is pretty old fashioned and people and tables are packed in there like sardines. I'm sure it appeals to some people but I'm personally a bigger fan of personal space. Service was very slow; we waited at the front for 5 minutes before we got sat down. They don't have the dim sum cart here so it's order off the menu. We ordered a bunch off the menu; most of the items we ordered were below average and slightly bland and doughy. My least favorite was the fried taro balls. The BBQ pork noodles/doughy item was the best tasting. The pork ribs were alright but again, the flavor was bland. Their char Siu buns was very light on the meat and heavy on the dough. Everything else was a bit bland for me; it was below par compared to anything I've had at Fung's and I got told during lunch that HK Dimsum was better. decent enough dimsum in a pretty popular area. my favorite and highly recommended item from here was the shiu mai; my parents and I all had our own order. was packed with a combination of pork and shrimp, which was very filling. would definitely skip the bbq pork buns, they lacked a lot of flavor for me and didn't have much filling inside. waiters are very quick to serve you. My daughter loves crab but was not a fan of the steamed crab dumplings. The pork ribs were good but has a lot of tiny bones. Solid dim sum place in Chinatown. Might be tough to navigate if you don't understand Chinese, but their menus do have pictures of each dish. Highly recommend getting the steamed pork spare ribs with bean sauce, they do them right! They have all the classics, so I feel comfortable that whatever you order, you'll enjoy it. Located in the same plaza as the Welcome Center grocery store, this place is a bit hidden. It's in the same corner as the Police station and will be on the right. It can get crowded during peak time but shouldn't be a problem getting a table. I've been here a couple of times and it's one of my fave places to get dim sum. Some of my fave items are the shrimp crab puffs, shrimp stuffed eggplants, and pan fried chives dumplings. A hot jasmine tea also goes great with dim sum. Services are usually quick. There are no carts at this dim sum restaurant, but service is great, and the food comes out fast. The restaurant is tucked away in the corner of a strip mall, past the giant chess board. There is an overhanging sign pointing out the entrance within that corner alleyway. I realized the hours on Yelp were outdated when I saw the ones on Yelp differed from the ones posted on the restaurant door. (Hours have since been updated on Yelp; they're open daily 9:30am-9pm.) Perhaps that was one of the reasons the restaurant was empty when we arrived at 10am on Saturday. However, it quickly filled up during the 40 minutes we were there. Even though there are no carts, they offer a book with photos of all their dim sum menu items that match up by letter (size) & number to the paper menu. I thought this was a great way to showcase their items sans carts. After checking off the items we wanted, the waiter printed out an order slip and stapled it to the original paper menu with our requests. This was left at the table to keep track of the items that came out. Although there were only 2 of us, we ordered like we were eating as a family of 6. I also enjoyed the Pan Fried Turnip Cake; it wasn't greasy, had good flavor, and didn't fall apart when picked up. Being that this was the first Houston-based dim sum restaurant I tried, I can't really say how it compares against other popular places in the area. We were given the menu, pencil, and a paper menu to mark how many of whichever item we wanted. We did that thinking the food were "small" bites. Well...not the case...we ordered food for an army, lol. Now we KNOW better! Food: I cannot begin to tell y'all everything we ordered but what I can tell you is that the shrimp dumplings and shrimp balls were off the chain!!! They were sooo good!!! The food started coming out and it seemed never ending, it reminded me of a Churrasqueria (e.g. Angus Steakhouse). We had so much food left that it'll take us several meals to eat it all. No cooking for me, lol. It was a great experience and the food was fresh, hot, and delicious. The menu has various foods for every dietary restrictions. I recommend anyone who hasn't been there, go and indulge but remember that the small bites are not so "small". According to first few reviews, Dim Sum King started in 2007. That's how I remember it was advertised on local Chinese newspaper, but I couldn't find it. Fast forward to Bellaire Blvd widening project in 2012 to Covid-19 pandemic of 2020, they are still standing tall at the same location. I believe they changed ownership through time. But they never change the menu nor Chinese name. That's very important. Because of longevity, the prices of dim sum are really reasonable. I have done a few updates since the beginning of Covid-19 restaurant lockdown in March 2020. They remained open, except takeout only. Their dining room reopened after Governor Abbot signed an executive order to allow all business to open in October 2020. I still couldn't stop by to try the food until early this year. I ordered takeout because family member crave for some Cantonese food and I crave for dim sum. Then, I took another offer from Diho Square with a gift card at the end of May. Dining at Dim Sum King is a blessing. I usually dining when restaurants are not busy like about 4-5 pm. Employees were very attentive and food is usually fresher because they finished their lunch and cooking a new batch for dinner. I'm serious about hosting my Chinatown Crawl UYE here one day. Not the best dim sum place I have been to in Chinatown. Was disappointed not to find the lazy susan's on the tables. The service is kind of chaotic and you had to ask like 3 different servers before something was done for you. We came on a Sunday at like 1pm and a few of their dishes were sold out. The dishes that I liked were the custard bun and the haw gao and the sesame balls. They brought out all the sweet dishes first, I guess because they were ready but the sweet dishes definitely got cold by the time we wanted to eat them. Went here for lunch during our visit to Houston, TX. We came right when it opened, so it wasn't busy. I think when the place is busy, it might be very crowded since the restaurant is not too big and tables are pretty close to each other. I like that right outside of the restaurant area, there's a big chess board that people can entertain themselves while waiting for their table. I miss the dim sum where they push the carts around and you pick what you want to eat. I think like many places, they give you paper and you order that way now. We pick our usual dim sum dishes like chicken feet, xiu mai, fried taro, etc. Everything is pretty good. They get an additional star for the amazing service. We had great conversations about food & places that we like to eat & recommend. These guys have a lot of knowledge about food and it was an honored to get to meet them. Alright so here's the breakdown on what we got. - Crab King shiu mai- very tasty and fresh 4/5. - Pan fried turnip cake- I got to taste a little bit of it, yeah it was good 3.5/5. - Steamed shrimp dumpling- I always get it when I eat at any dim sum, this one was decent 3.3/5 - Deep fried taro puff- I never tried it before, it had a very unique taste, I was expecting it to have a taro flavor since it's in the name but in my opinion I didn't taste any taro at all. 3.5/5 - Steam shrimp rice noodles- fine 2.8/5 - Broccoli w/oyster sauce- I can eat this all day 4.5/5 - Fried crab claw with shrimp- this is the first thing I get at any dim sum, I enjoyed it. It was crispy, had a nice crunch & the inside had a lot of meat. 4.2/5 - Sticky rice with meat wrap lotus leaf- All I have to say is Jason, thanks for your recommendation it was my favorite. 4.7/5 Overall, it was good. While it wasn't the best, both were quite good and brought back childhood memories. We always get chinese broccoli w/ oyster sauce cause you gotta have your veggies, this one had some crunch so we gave the leafy parts to my niece since it was easier for her to eat. The shrimp fried rice and BBQ pork buns were ok; probably wouldn't order them again since I've had way better elsewhere. Everything else (tara puffs, turnip cakes, both dumplings) were straight up awesome. The dumplings had that fried texture with large amounts of fillings inside; plus dipping it in that chili oil provided reminded me of the good ol days when we went to dim sum places and picked stuff off the pushing carts. Also the tara puffs had great fried texture. The turnip cakes were awesome as well; I hated those growing up for some reason but I love them now. It's what happens when your taste buds mature. My family and I enjoyed the food since it brought back memories and we introduced my niece to dim sum. Since my sister and her husband live in Nashville now, they mentioned how hard it was to find good dim sum let alone chinese food in that area so they were ecstatic eating this.
