    Peking duck
    Libby H.

My husband and I came here for his birthday dinner and the ambiance, styling, and vibes of this place is truly beautiful! They have a happy hour from 3-6 which I think is a nice choice for cheaper cocktails and bites. Food for us was a hit or miss. Peking duck was delicious and the wagyu truffle fried rice was great too. The other dishes to us were honestly just not wow or amazing. The menu looked great and we were excited but we were disappointed in the dim sum sampler, wok fried fish special, crab rangoons, and Sichuan lamb lollipops. Overall just either the flavor was missing or it seemed too oily. The price is a premium so we had high expectations of the menu and food and it just didn't hit the mark for us personally. The service was really really great though! Extremely friendly and attentive!

We had a nice dinner here and it seems many others did as well as the place was packed. Service was friendly and dish presentation was suitably elevated for the ambience that this restaurant has. This is definitely an elevated Chinese food experience. Our table shared many dishes. The stand outs were the peeking duck, the green beans, and the crispy shrimp. Parking: valet or South Park and the attached garage just keep an eye out for signs designating which spots are reserved or open

Upscale Chinese restaurant! Parking outside is valet or are you paid to park in the lots The restaurant itself is an upscale Chinese restaurant with many unique dishes, they have alot of the menu of a Chinese restaurant but their dishes are family style. They have happy hour with a lot of mix with the dishes. Definitely enjoyed the shrimp. We got plenty of cocktails on the happy hour menu as well. Leche martini with excellent with well vodka. Service was great. They were very attentive to us.

***3.5/5*** Maison Chinoise is good, but think of it as an upscale PF Changs. The vibes and service were good, but when we left it just felt like over priced Chinese food. You're definitely paying for the ambiance- dim lighting, and the trendy atmosphere. The food and service were good, but I am deducting points for the pricing. Here is what we got- - Hot and sour soup 6/10 - Lychee Fizz Mocktail- 9/10 - Crispy Crab Wontons- 7/10 - Shrimp dumplings- 6.5/10 - Drunken Noodles with shrimp- 8/10 - Mongolian Wagyu Beef- 7/10 Overall nice experience, but if I am paying this much for Chinese food I want it to change my life.

I love chinese food, and when hearing about upscale chinese food like here, I am usually a bit skeptical. This restaurant is part of the Lombardi group, and they have some hits and some misses. I found this place to be just okay. Service is good as expected. The ambiance is beautiful and would be a great date night. Let's move onto the food... Pandan Espresso Martini 2/5 I love a good espresso martini, and this is good... but there's ZERO pandan. It was disappointing. Crispy Crab Wonton 5/5 I love these. I always get them. Solid. Chef's Selection of Dim Sum 4/5 This was good... just like many other dim sum restaurants! I enjoyed it and you can really tell the quality. It's good for the one time try, but the price is steep for dim sum. For the same price, I could've gotten 3 orders at another place. Black Pepper Filet Mignon 5/5 This is cooked very well. It reminds me of my mom's cooking. The beef is very tender. A solid choice if you don't wanna go out of your comfort zone. It comes with fluffy white rice :) Peking Duck 5/5 One of the best peking ducks I've had in the city. The skin is crispy, yet it's still fatty and the duck meat is tender. The only odd thing about is the mustard that they give you. We don't traditionally eat mustard with this... I mistakenly thought the strips of melon were pickled carrots. It was different, but I found that it went well with the duck somehow. I'm not opposed to it. It's build your own so I still rate this high based on just the quality of the peking duck alone. Dan Dan Noodles 1/5 These are not dan dan noodles. I judge a Chinese restaurant based on their dan dan noodles because it's so simple to make. You literally shouldn't be able to mess it up, and they majorly did bad. Honestly, the noodles weren't bad, but they're not the usual noodles used for dan dan noodles... they were green??? and the sauce was just off. I wouldn't say that it tastes bad, but I don't expect dan dan noodles lol Honestly, I wouldn't mind coming back, but for the price, I definitely would just go to Chinatown. This would be more for special occasions. I highly recommend ordering the peking duck.

When this place first opened up, I came in to look for a spot at the bar, but it seemed a bit of a hot mess, so I decided to give it a week for them to work the kinks out. I'm glad I did because now, it looks and feels a lot smoother. The bar area is a good place to grab a bite and reservations seem effortless; there's also usually a good crowd for people watching. Service is good and food comes out fast and tasty. Prices of course are much higher than if your in China town area but we're in the River Oaks area so there will be an increase in normal fare. With that said I would consider the prices reasonable for the portion size you get. The menu is quite extensive and a lot of really good choices. Items I could recommend or are worth a try is the Crispy Rock Shrimp, spicy basil aioli, jalapeño aoli. Lettuce Cups with Organic Chicken jicama, celery, mixed bell peppers. Iberico Pork Wonton Soup chicken broth, pork. Pan-Fried Organic Chicken Buns and from the main entree General Tso's Wilf Caught Salmon baby bok choy, sugar peas, lotus roots, mixed bell peppers. These were all tasty options but I also thought the menu had a lot more good choices too. I guess the only reason i didn't give it my normal 5 stars is that I thought for the area, the design aesthetic could have been more creative and could and should be able to wow us better. Overall I do enjoy this place I would for sure recommend to anyone to give this place a try.

Thoroughly delightful! The restaurant is gorgeous! Upon entering, theres a patio area with lots of natural light. I made a reservation and was seated after a short wait of less than five minutes. Our server Neil created such a fun, enjoyable dining experience. He thoroughly explained each section of the menu, while listening to what we like and making recommendations. He was very attentive and made our first dining experience very special. The Aloe can you go cocktail was very tasty but the star of the show was the Lychee luck! Each dish was so delicious 10/10 overall experience.

I once took a breadmaking class from Peter Reinhardt and he prefaced the class by saying "you know anyone can make good bread but my intention with this class is to teach you how to make spectacular bread". And that's stuck with me. On Bellaire Boulevard we have hundreds of great, world class Chinese restaurants. So if someone opens up a restaurant in River Oaks, it kind of really has to follow that thinking of being truly spectacular. And that's why I am so interested in visiting Maison Chinoise a few times to see if it is spectacular. If something about it sets it apart from what we would find on Bellaire Boulevard (for less money). Update: Doggie bagged everything not eaten. Microwaved the General Tso for dinner. It was godawful. Thick, gloppy cornstarch. Sometimes it takes a second look . Really awful. Really. Ditto the kung pao chicken reheated. Green beans, wife comment on these, (actually everything I brought home) "Salty". So, my final comment would be, get something else on the menu besides these two Sino-American classics. Go with the dumplings. Try the duck. Try something else. Here follows my original review: And that's why I am so interested in visiting Maison Chinoise a few times to see if it is spectacular. If something about it sets it apart from what we would find on Bellaire Boulevard (Peking Cuisine, Arco, Golden Dim Sum, Golden Room, Jiu Fu, East Wall, etc. ) (for less money). Now right off the bat you know that this is going to be a beautifully appointed restaurant with a gorgeous interior and it'll be interesting to see how the noise level is because when you go out for fine dining, you want to be able to have a conversation. You don't want a place that has tile floors, loud music and "stuff" that creates a noisy environment because they think that that will make people think that they are having more fun dining there. Truthfully, I don't even see a need for music in fine dining restaurants. Bars, yes, but fine dining restaurants? Naw. So let's get one of my pet peeves out of the way immediately. I hate paying for parking or for valet parking when I dine out. Houston spread out. There shouldn't be any need to have to pay for parking. Now, if you're on a date you're gonna have to be extorted for this because you don't want to seem cheap for your date, but for persons who dine out for the dining experience and there's plenty of space, give me a break. Don't make me pay for parking. Do I do it? Yeah of course you have to. But when I can go to Bellaire Boulevard and park for free well that's just one more thing that makes me less likely to come to eat at the River Oaks shopping center. But if you don't mind walking a little bit, there is free parking in the parking garage. So you could drop off the guests traveling with you and then go park and then walk over yourself. First off, absolutely beautiful interior. At lunchtime, extremely tranquil. Wait staff, super friendly and knowledgeable. Open viewing of the kitchen, so I got to see the ducks roasting away. Definitely must come back for their signature Beijing duck. But today a little bit of what they are proud of and then some traditional dishes just to see how they do them. So I should start with the chef's special assortment of four dim sum, followed by a classic hot and sour soup and then we will see what I want go with for entrées. Dim sum sampler? Excellent. As good as I've ever had. Four delicious, perfectly prepared morsels. Recommended. Uncle Roger would say "Fuiyo!h! Hot and sour soup? Really heavy soy sauce flavor profile. Jiu Fu (and a few others I could mention) on Bellaire has them beat. Kind of unpleasant, but some might say that this style is not atypical of some regions of China. I don't know. But me no like. Thick broth. "Soy sauce soup". The special non alcohol lychee fizz cocktail. Wow. That's a lot of ice. Gotta let it melt for awhile or there will just be an ounce or two of drink to consume. Tasty though. Might order it again. Maybe. For entrees I went with classic Sino-American kung pao chicken and General Tso's chicken (just for fun). I know it will be better than Panda Garden, obviously (organic chicken is used). And I ordered green beans. Beans too salty for my personal taste. Dittto General Tso. But that is my personal taste. Good crunch from being freshly made. Ketchup taste in the flavor profile. Beautiful presentation. Gloppy sauce on the kung pao also. More salty than is my personal taste. Respect to this whole question of authenticity versus "did I like it?" comes into play here. For me, personally, the kung pao would have been just fine if they used half the oil in the stir fry. Not much wok hai, surprisingly. Uncle Roger would say "Haiyah!" I liked the $18 fortune cookie dessert. Crunchy pizzelle, fruit, chocolate ice cream. I will be back but I won't order any of these a second time. Gotta come back with friends to try that duck!!! Sidebar: Damn!!! Different pricing cash versus non cash

I walked in a week ago with a sense of excitement, curious and adventurous. Lindsay left me with a sense of emptiness and embarrassment. I was informed about this place from a gentleman at Cocodys (across the street) after an event. He mentioned that a few team members was going to visit Maison Chinoise after work, for their soft open. Along with the complementary treat samples they had. However, when I visit, it really wasn't a warm greet, it was more of a dry greet and a reservation seems to be a requirement, she was kind enough to inform Management who approached and the vibe was very off, you know the people who have that animation smile that rest behind sarcasm voice. She didn't even give me a menu to view for me to even pique interest if I want to return. I felt very unwelcome by Manager Lindsay As a manager you want to leave a positive impression to create the feeling of an inviting back. They still had folks mingling and drinking. Verses Cocodys was cleaning, and I was greeted sweetly with sincere and offered to view a menu. Because once I heard French I was not expecting to return so quickly. I came back less than 72 hours later to break bread at their location for my Halloween birthday. Maison Chinoise, had me asking was it my attire? Which I wasn't clear on the answer. Due to this (you need to leave now energy). As if their were closed and it was a construction site that required a hardhat and steel toe boots. It's definitely space for opportunity for Customer service here. I was looking forward to see what Maison had to offer verses spending time at Fancy's. Maybe she was having an off day. Maybe I'll give them a try on a forgiving heart day. I don't see it being any time soon. I like feeling good when I leave an establishment. She made me feel very uninvited.

    Wagyu truffle fried rice

Maison Chinoise delivers a really solid, elevated Chinese dining experience with bold flavors and thoughtful execution. We tried a variety of dishes and overall were impressed. Weirdly obsessed with their velvet walls!! Service was also 10/10. Waiter was attentive and the manager checked in with us to make sure everything came out accordingly! The lobster dumplings absolutely stole the show with the delicate wrappers, generous lobster filling, and perfectly balanced flavor. Easily the best dish of the night and a must-order. The Sichuan dumplings brought a nice kick with their numbing spice and rich sauce, while the smoked BBQ had great depth and smokiness that felt refined rather than overpowering with fall of the bones tenderness. The Wagyu fried rice was rich, indulgent, and well-cooked with high-quality meat throughout, and the orange beef was crispy, flavorful, and not overly sweet, which was a pleasant surprise. Everything we had was good to very good, with the lobster dumplings being truly standout. Knocked off one star only because a few dishes didn't quite reach that "wow" level based on the premium prices -- but overall, definitely a place worth returning to, especially for the dumplings.

    Vegetarian dim sum
    Kinjal S.

This place has a lot of vegetarian options clearly marked. Minus the Dan Dan noodles they can't sub tofu for pork and still have it decent so not sure why it's an option. We got the vegetarian dim sum which was meh. I did like 1/3 options. The drunken noodles were so good. We also got the tofu eggplant which was good too. The service was great. It's quite loud so have to speak up or hard to hear the other person.

    Peking duck (full order)
    Zhen L.

This is a newly opened high end Chinese restaurant in Houston, with possibly the best tasting Peking duck I've had outside of China. We ordered the Wagyu fried rice (amazing), Iberico wonton soup (great flavors), the chili prawns (great), and a full order of the Peking duck. The duck meat was succulent and flavorful, the crepes were made to perfection, and the sides/sauces went perfectly with the duck. The cocktails were delicious, the ambiance was immaculate (we got a great view of both the bar and the kitchen), and the service was fantastic. Our toddler accidentally knocked down a pair of chopsticks and someone magically appeared with brand new chopsticks within seconds. We got great recommendations, they checked on us often, gave us a refresh of the crepes and sides, and helped us box up the leftovers when it was all said and done. I had a 10/10 experience here, and will definitely bring the whole family back next time!!

A lovely take on Chinese cuisine. The restaurant furniture and decor is very elevated and chic. Food menu and presentation are amazing. Unfortunately, my server left much to be desired but the manager Lindsey was amazing with her service recovery. I came for my birthday celebration and from start to finish I had issues with the server but everything else was top tier. The encounter with him changed my mind from wanting to come back to try the happy hour.

Sadly, it seems like those days are long gone as the latter is on a downhill slope. Has ownership changed? (#1) I'm not sure, but so much else has. There's no tea offered, but bottled water. Service and the kitchen staff is a mess where it's most evident during their busiest hours. At one point, Cantonese was spoken but it also seems that's no longer the case. Previously the food was passable, but now it's near abysmal. Siu mai was hearty, but fairly bland. The same applies to their spare ribs (排骨), beef balls (牛肉球), and steamed glutinous rice in leaf (糯米雞). I felt their custard buns (奶黃包), fried stuffed crab claw (釀蟹鉗), fried glutinous dumpling (鹹水角) and the turnip cake (蘿蔔糕) were dried out. While the shrimp dumplings (蝦餃) and rice rolls (腸粉) mostly passed the test, it needed lots of soy sauce + condiments to be worth it. The only winner was their beef chow fun (乾炒牛河), where the beef and ho fun noodles were tender, while also being adequately greasy. The bonus bits of fried egg within were a nice surprise. While the prices range from $3.75-$9.70, a majority of it will average out to be $5-6 a dish. This isn't a terrible deal per se, especially during these times. However, it is a big price to pay for service issues and sub-par quality dim sum. While I'm hopeful that they'll rebound and I hope the Joy returns, but I don't think I will. __________ (#1) FZ / FJ peeps, where ya at?

Per our friend, their salt and pepper ribs are the best they've had in Houston, and I would agree. It was crispy, flavorful, and the meat was tender. Yum! Definitely the highlight of the meal. The beef cubes with asparagus and mushrooms was good too. Beef was nice and tender and flavor was good. The house special tofu was a surprise box as it literally had everything in it! There was beef slices, chicken chunks , squid, shrimp, charsu, bamboo in addition to deep fried pieces of tofu. I enjoyed the dish, but maybe because there were too many things in it I would probably try something else next time, before you're not sure which protein you're going to get each time. Sautéed on choy was good as well. I can't comment on the service or ambience since we didn't dine in. However, overall enjoyed the place and would love to return to try other dishes (as well as reorder the salt and pepper ribs.

Don't be fooled by its English name, you will not be eating Shanghainese food here: this is a traditional Cantonese restaurant. In typical Chinese American fashion, we had the "adult" table and of course we sat at the "kids" table. We ordered the classics as pictured. The food is always tasty and consistent. Service is friendly and the even though this spot is no frills, it is a familiar place with a very family-centered atmosphere. You can not go wrong with old reliable. If you are ever craving authentic, traditional Cantonese cooking without the large, dim sum hybrid model, I definitely recommend this place. Perfect for lunch with coworkers, by yourself, and great for larger dinners with the whole family.

5 Stars - Authentic Szechuan that absolutely nails the classics…read more During our short trip to Houston, as a custom, we were determined to find real Szechuan food, and luckily we found Hu's Kitchen. The location is a bit unassuming, and parking is definitely tough (the spaces are very shallow), but the second we walked through the doors and smelled the Szechuan peppercorns, I knew we were in exactly the right place. I generally judge a Szechuan restaurant by their 夫妻肺片 (Fuqi Feipian)--which they cleverly name "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" on the menu. They completely nailed it. The beef, tripe, and tendon were incredibly cohesive together, yet you could tell each component was prepared and marinated in a slightly different way to perfectly highlight its specific texture. The chili oil was right on the spot. We went through a massive bowl of rice just eating this dish alone. Honestly, if I weren't feeding a family of four, I could have just ordered that and been perfectly happy. While the Fuqi Feipian proves their skill with dry dishes, the 水煮魚片 (Fish in Szechuan Hot Chili Oil) proves their skill with wet ones. It's another must-order. The execution was flawless--we didn't just finish the tender fish chunks, we ate every last piece of cabbage soaked in that incredible chili broth. For my two daughters who can't handle the heat, we ordered the fried rice, garlic pork ribs with onion, and the 紅燒獅子頭 (Giant Meatball with Cabbage). The giant meatball was spectacular. The kids completely devoured it on their own, but I managed to steal a bite, and it instantly brought back childhood memories of exactly how this dish is supposed to taste. We also had the Dan Dan Noodles, which were great and rounded out the meal perfectly. I loved all of the dishes we tried. Should we ever find ourselves in Houston again, we will absolutely be revisiting this hidden gem.

My mom wanted steamed fish with ginger, scallions, and that light sweet soy sauce. Hu's Cooking…read moredelivered! When we ordered, they mentioned it'll take about 20 mins but it came out in 10. No complaints here since we were starving from an 8 hour road trip. The Dan Dan Noodles...I had high expectations but sadly this dish fell short. I recommend Hu's Cooking to use a bigger bowl and more sauce because it was difficult to mix the noodles and the sauce wasn't...saucing, unfortunately. I wish there was more flavor in this dish. The Scallion Pancake was super over-fried and oily. See image in my review. The outer parts of the pancake were fried to a crisp and only a small circumference in the center stayed chewy. I know Chinese tends to be oily but this pancake soaked up way too much oil. Half a Peking duck: super great price for so much meat. The difficulty when eating this dish is gnawing the meat off the sharp bones of the duck. Mapo Tofu with white rice: pretty easy staple, no complaints here. Dinner on a Saturday was packed but we got seated quickly and food arrived fast.
