We had a large party so we all kind of bartered and traded bites of eachothers dishes. I met a friend for dinner at Sushi on Post Oak and it did not disappoint. We opted for the larger of the two omakase, which I don't believe typically includes a caviar bite but we got it in lieu of an uni as they were out of it. Overall the food was great, and high quality--exactly what you hope for when you opt for sushi. Service was attentive but not enough to seem brazen-they gave us the space we needed to catch up over our bites, but noticed when our plates were empty. This place is a nice casual upscale sushi place. The quality and atmosphere feel elevated. There's even a pub on the other side of it called luckys. If you come during their happy hour the prices are very reasonable. I feel like the quality of sushi you're getting reflects well with the prices. The servers are attentive as well. The only complaint I had with the service was they didn't explain how the Kobe beef rock was-like you had to cook it on the rock. I got the lunch special with two rolls of maki combo. The two rolls I got was the volcano and shrimpolicious. The volcano sushi roll was a bit disappointing in that it was loaded with so much crawfish but the sauces overpowered it. I feel like you only get this dish if you want something pretty to look at since they light it on fire for you. The shrimpolicuous was the star of the show and it was delicious. The sauces paired well and blended into the roll. The yuzu honey was different and definitely brighten the roll. I got the Kobe beef on a rock and this one is pretty neat you get a hot stone to cook the meat on and it comes with two different sauces which I am unsure what it was since the server didn't introduce it. My only guess is it was a type of wasabi sauce mixed with something and then an aioli sauce. It's better to put some sauce on the meat before you place it on the rock because the meat gets stuck to the rock. I tried the lychee martini it had a piece of dragon fruit and two lychee pieces on a stick. The alcohol was strong in this and you only get a hint of the lychee. This drink was a bit pricey for what you're getting. GET THE LOBSTER PUFFS these were absolutely delicious. Perfect crispy crunch and the inside was better than any crab puffs I've had before. So...I was in the area again, and in search of toro nigiri, so against my better judgement I grabbed a dragon cocktail, lobster crab puffs and about 6 pieces of nigiri before my exercise class. Good news! I do not regret my choice for a second. Sitting at the bar affords guests the bonus of watching each dish come to life, and is consistently one of my favorite seats in the house. Although this spot is expensive, I still stand by the following dishes: the shishito peppers (see my review below), the lobster crab puffs when fresh (my gosh, this eggroll shaped variation of the crab puff is certainly an improvement to the classic dish), salmon toro, and toro nigiri. Each nigiri came dressed, and of the 6, apart from the two mentioned above, the additional nigiri pieces were nice, but not super memorable. A lover of Madai, I'd certainly order this one again, but I can't say it's my favorite Madai within a 2 mile radius. With dozens of sushi options in the area, this spot continues to lure me in. Until someone offers Madai, Toro, lobster crab puffs and shishitos that can compare, I don't see that changing anytime soon :). read more

This was in walking distance from our hotel and we didn't want something as heavy as the Italian or pub food next door. We were promptly seated on a Monday evening at 7:30 pm and the interior decor is quite nice. I ordered the Rocket Combo: bbq short ribs, dynamite shrimp, blue crab fried rice for $33. While it offered nice variety, I could make better at home. The flavors seemed westernized and the fried rice was a little dry. Has a kick of spice , with the citrus flavor. Loved it. The Golden Citrus Kanpachi was very flavorful. Great for on or two people to share; 2 bites each. The Blazing Tuna Roll was great. Some other waiter showed up with a roll of sushi and had to let them know I haven't ordered yet. I ordered the misu soup, spicy edemame, and Sake. These were all great specially the spicy edemame. However their most popular sushi roll, choo choo roll was very mediocre and it tasted sweet barely tasted any of the spiciness as described in the menu. Their dessert though was great. By the way, there was no stumping or waiter; all questions my wife hurled at him were fielded expertly. He seemed to know everything there was to know about every fish and how it would taste. Impressive. My wife thought all of her sashimi was incredible. I, on the other hand, always struggle with prices for sushi. Let's just say I'm glad I opted for the two-roll lunch special...as I'm just not sure those rolls individually are worth their normal price tag. They had a Valentine's Day menu but it was on the pricey side for the portions sizes we were seeing at surrounding tables (we heard a couple nearby comment as well) so we opted for the regular menu. I love that they still gave us the option because a lot of places force you to order from a menu of things you don't want. I had 2 sushi rolls and they were on the smaller side as far as size compared to other sushi places nearby at the same caliber/price point but they tasted great. I stopped in here today for happy hour because I was craving sushi. Waited for about five minutes to be seated as the hostess wasn't at the stand, then as I ordered, two rolls off the happy hour i noticed one contained sesame. I have a sesame allergy and when I told the server that I had one, he rudely just grabbed the roll off my table and didn't say anything and walked away. He later came back to say that they can't make it without sesame, but if he had waited and let me finish and didn't rudely walk away, he would've known that I no longer wanted the roll. If you're looking for good vibes and amazing sushi, SOPO won't disappoint. We designated this as our "go to" sushi spot a few years ago and never looked back, which says a lot considering we eat sushi at least once a week and often try new places for fun. SOPO's food is always consistent and fresh. I highly recommend booking a reservation if you plan to visit on the weekend. We have brought countless friends here and everyone always raves about it. Our favorites are the Nando roll, any and all nigiri options with the executive chef toppings, Blue Crab Fried Rice, HTX roll (especially to those that think they don't like raw fish - it's a great intro to sushi), and the King Salmon sashimi. Their specials are pretty good too! My only nit is the inconsistency of service at times, but the restaurant industry generally has high turnover so I'm not sure that's attributable to the restaurant itself. I used to love coming to this place, but my last experience will prevent me from patronizing at all, going forward. I come on lunch, often, and have always ordered the lunch special "Two Specialty Rolls," with one being "Miso Happy" and the other "Phili Squared." On my last visit, I was told I couldn't order the Miso Happy roll because it was "a part of Happy Hour menu, not lunch special." I asked why every other time I've ordered this exact combination of rolls with no issue, to which she responded "I just work here." That's one of the worst responses to give a client in any situation. I explained that I was seated at a time that the lunch special and Happy Hour coincided (2-3p), and that even the opportunity cost of having the Miso Happy was less because it only sells for $16, period. They would be essentially discounting the Phili Squared roll and any other I'd have chosen because those rolls are menu-priced at $21+ and the special gives you two for $32... not the most sound decision on their behalf. I eventually left the restaurant without ordering, but was sure to contact management as I left. I was handled by a lady, who, while nice, stated she was only filling in as she works at the sister restaurant. I was assured I'd be contacted regarding this, and I was, but only to say "they said this is the rule and I don't know much more that I can tell you." Another poor response. I asked for someone to contact me who actually works at this restaurant concept to better understand why I've only run into this issue this one time, never in my many previous visits, and she assured me I'd be contacted within a couple days. That was one month ago, and I have not been contacted since. Such a shame because the food is tasty, and usually service is prompt and courteous. I used to recommend this restaurant to clients of mine (high traffic River Oaks luxury boutique), though I now suggest other restaurants based on the poor handling of this experience. read more
