First time here for a friend's birthday. They had reservations for a private big table in the back for 10 people. We had 1 waiter and a few runners. The place was very busy but service was great! Quick and thorough. I had several sake bombs but that didn't cloud my judgement! The food was amazing here. Definitely worth the slightly higher price than your average sushi place. There isn't a bad choice on the menu. We will be back for their lunch specials as they have event better pricing and dishes you can only get then. read more

FOOD POISONING I hate to give Kata a bad review because I actually enjoy eating here. However, I currently have food poisoning after eating here yesterday. 30 minutes after coming back from lunch break, I had diarrhea. I thought maybe it was just a bad day, but I am still suffering from this. I have to use the toilet many times a day, and I feel so nauseous. If it keeps getting worse, I am might have to consider going to urgent care. My boss ordered a salad that had the same veggies that came with the pan seared duck breast about a week ago, and also had diarrhea. He pieced two and two together. We believe that it's the veggies. I am worried that what I have is the parasite that's going around right now, cyclosporiasis. On another note, I wanted to try their specials. The lamb gyozas were okay. I didn't really like the skin of the gyoza, seemed a bit oily. I was excited to try the pan seared duck breast, but I found it to be a bit overcooked than what I usually have at other restaurants. Kata Robata used to be one of my favorite restaurants before I moved away from Houston. After recently moving back, I chose it for my birthday lunch with friend because I had such fond memories of dining there. Unfortunately, this visit was disappointing. I arrived about 20 minutes before opening and had to wait outside in Houston's summer heat 93'F. While there are a few benches, there is very little shade, and guests are not allowed to wait inside. When the restaurant opened, there was no clear system for seating guests. Even though I was first in line, several people rushed in ahead of me, making the process feel disorganized. The biggest issue involved a $300 gift card that my friend had received years ago. She simply asked the staff to check the balance. When the server returned, he told us the manager had cut the card in half and that the entire balance had to be used during that visit. What bothered me was the lack of communication. We were never informed of the policy before the card was invalidated. If that is the restaurant's policy, it should be explained clearly beforehand. As two ladies having lunch, spending $300 was difficult, so we ended up ordering far more food than we normally would. The sashimi was fresh but cut thinly than what I've had at comparable restaurants. The hamachi kama, chirashi, and lobster mac and cheese were good. The green tea soufflé cheesecake was the biggest disappointment. For $10, it consisted of three very small cubes and felt overpriced. The waitstaff were attentive, friendly and professional, which helped salvage the experience. However, between the uncomfortable wait outside, the chaotic seating process, and the poor handling of the gift card, this visit did not live up to my previous experiences. Had a fantastic evening at Kata Robata! Our server, Gabby, was excellent and attentive throughout the evening. My favorite was definitely the Kobe Beef Skewers - I could have just eaten those all night long! Deliciousness in every bite. I'm not a fan of raw fish, so while my family enjoyed a handful of crudo dishes and nigiri, I got to enjoy the Longhorn Roll. This roll was solid, nothing mindblowing. My family had dinner here last weekend. We had an early dinner so parking was plentiful. The interior is clean but non-descript. The service was very good. I was a bit disappointed with the food given the reviews I had read, especially given that the sushi pricing is very expensive. I would give the food an overall 3.5/5 stars. We had: Octopus Crudo (3/5) - It's thinly sliced octopus from a large tentacle so pretty large circular discs. The "issue" is that the citrus flavors are so overpowering you can't tell at all that you're eating octopus. I will say the flavors weren't bad, just overpowering for the octopus. Ceviche - My daughter ordered this and said it was very good; I did not try. Me and a friend stopped by for a quick lunch. Immediately upon being seated, we were greeted by Tai our server. He was very welcoming and assertive. Throughout our interactions he was very vocal about his opinions of the menu and suggestions but could be heard having some disagreements with other tables and staff which was a bit concerning. Service for the lunch tonkatsu ramen was quick and efficient. The ramen is just as great as I remember. The pork tonkatsu is flame seared and has an excellent charred flavor, very different than normal tonkatsu pork but still melts in your mouth. The broth is flavorful and ginger-forward, but not too salty to where it's overpowering. Great portions of noodles that makes for a satisfying lunch. The seaweed salad was unlike any I've had before, it featured about eight different types of seaweed and was beautifully presented. While it wasn't quite my personal favorite, I appreciated the creativity and quality. The true star of the meal was the miso black cod. Favorite meal of our entire trip. Went with a group of 6 and ordered the perfect amount of food. Most things are shareable. The menu leans traditional Japanese and there's something for everyone. Kata Robata was an amazing experience from start to finish! We decided to try several of the daily specials along with a few menu favorites, and everything was absolutely delicious. From the specials menu, we started with the spicy garlic coconut milk mussels made with fresh Prince Edward Island/British Columbia mussels in a rich spicy garlic coconut cream sauce, topped with green onions and served with toasted ciabatta bread. The broth was incredible and packed with flavor. As an appetizer, we ordered the Texas Wagyu Hot Stone Bowl -- the only rice item on the menu at the time -- made with rice, egg, kimchi sauce, tawan mushrooms, sesame, and green onion. It was prepared tableside for us, which made the experience even more fun and interactive. We also tried the Spicy Soy Ramen with braised ground pork, chili oil, soy milk broth, soft boiled egg, wakame, green onion, and micro cilantro. The flavors were rich, comforting, and had the perfect amount of spice. The Nagasaki Champon Ramen was another standout with clams, shrimp, cabbage, pork, onion, ginger, and micro cilantro in a flavorful broth that tasted fresh and authentic. I've been to Kata Robata so many times, and it never disappoints. The quality and consistency are just top notch. This time I had the jalapeño hamachi and Yuzu salmon to start. Both were solid, but the salmon really blew me away. Super thin, super flavorful. The tuna and snapper sashimi were fresh and clean, exactly what you would expect. I tried the Texas Hamachi roll too, which was good but kind of overlapped flavor wise with the hamachi starter. Next time I'll probably pick one or the other. The Rising Sun roll was fine, but the Caribbean roll with lobster? Easily the winner. Don't forget to try their skewers as well! I was craving sushi while I was home in Texas and my friend suggested Kata Robata. He said the sushi was very traditional Japanese so I was very keen on trying it. For a Sunday lunch, this place was pretty bustling but we were still able to score a walk-in table. We both started with a miso soup and shared the Wagyu beef skewers (at his insistence) which had been cooked sous vide for 24 hours -- I highly recommend those! The meat was so tender and full of juiciness, barely any chewing required. It only comes with 2 skewers per order FYI. The miso soup was lacking for me as I expected a lot more umami flavor. Could definitely use more miso! For mains, I definitely wanted sushi. Some of the rolls looked good, but I was very keen on having nigiri as this is the best way to test if a Japanese restaurant is really good or not. I finally decided on the nigiri sushi platter, which was delicious. It comes with 10 pieces and either a cut tuna or salmon roll. I don't remember all the pieces but there was definitely salmon, fatty tuna, mackerel, kanpachi, scallop and unagi. The chutoro fatty tuna melted in my mouth. The tuna roll that came with the platter I found bland but the nigiri pieces are really where my mouth was the happiest. I highly recommend getting any of the nigiri pieces. We visited Kata Robata on a Saturday night around 6pm and experienced a 30-40 minute wait for a party of two. It's a busy restaurant, so I would recommend making a reservation beforehand. We were seated at the sushi bar and thus we were treated to front row seats to all of the action! We ordered the Chirashi, Toro & Ikura Roll, Texas Wagyu Beef Skewer, Wagyu Katsu Sando, and Green Tea Souffle Cheesecake and everything was excellent. Yes, the prices are on the higher side but the quality and service are also on the higher side. All of the fish featured in the chirashi bowl were fresh and melted in your mouth--perhaps a slightly more generous portion and I would order this for takeout regularly. The Toro & Ikura roll was a personal favorite of mine and recalled many memories of eating sushi in Tokyo. Fatty tuna, takuan (pickled radish), and shiso leaf is such a classic combination and always tastes great! The beef items were also very, very good but not my favorite. Since both of the beef dishes that we ordered featured wagyu, both are very fatty. I found that both items were a bit too fatty and rich for my taste. Would I order these items again though--absolutely yes. My future strategy would probably be to order beef skewers, eat a small amount fresh, and then take the rest home to slowly savor over the course of the week. Dessert is not something that I always order, but seeing some of my friends' reviews mention the green tea souffle cheesecake made it something we could not miss. And the green tea souffle cheesecake did not miss. The cheesecake itself was rich yet light, airy, fluffy, and not too sweet with great green tea flavor. So Hubby's birthday is 12/25 and we decided to celebrate early. After logging on to our American Express Platinum Account, and after registering our Resy Account, we decided to eat at Kata Robata and this place did not disappoint!! Hubby decided on Sushi and this place had all the right options. Not to mention the ambiance and service were great!! We ordered a Coke and Coke Zero along with some waters and lemon. For starters we ordered the pork belly papaya salad along with the Wagyu skewers that were "melt in your mouth, delicious!" For dinner, Hubby ordered the CHIRASHI (priced at $63) which consisted of eleven types of fresh sashimi over sushi rice. I also ordered two tako sushi (grilled octopus), one tamago sushi (egg sushi), two uni (sea urchin) sushi, one ikura (large fish egg roe) and two tobiko (smaller fish egg roe). Hubby shared with me that the CHIRASHI platter he chose was delicious and fresh. He eats a lot of Hawaiian poke and to me has been a bit of a fish/sashimi/poke/sushi connoisseur. As far as the sushi I had ordered, the uni was super fresh and delicious. I've had uni from other places in Hawaii, like Genki Sushi or Kuru Kuru Sushi and this by far was a much more delicate, light and refreshing uni I've had. The tako was nicely grilled and had a thick yet tender texture. The Ikura and Tobiko were slightly salty and quite refreshing while the tamago was fluffy and airy, and all pairing nicely with the sushi rice. I think the only issue I had was adding too much wasabi to each sushi piece. But utilizing the ginger helped balance out the heat from the wasabi. Dinner was delicious and we were delighted that our waitress shared with Hubby that he was able to pick an option of desserts since it was his birthday...which was complimentary. He ended up choosing the banana crème brûlée which was smooth and creamy. We had an amazing night and were able to spend some quality time at a great restaurant!! Visited on a Saturday during lunch. Wasn't too busy, short wait time to be seated with no prior reservation. Bathroom was also fresh and clean. I Ordered a Mexican 76 which was good. The seafood ramen was delish!!! The Caribbean Roll was fresh and flavorful. Great service as our waiter was patient and helped me pick from the menu. Visiting with family in Houston who are big foodies. Of all the great places they turned me on to, Kata Robata was the bomb. A week later and I am still thinking about it... Since they took charge of ordering the food, I can't tell you exactly what dishes we had, but it was a large assortment of various kinds of sushi and nigiri, enough to feed six people. Every single dish - from the simple to the sophisticated - was absolutely delicious, so I think you cannot go wrong here. I said it was enough to feed six people, but maybe I am wrong about that - every single piece was eaten, and I think we probably could have kept going, it was so damn good. I've heard the fish is flown in from Japan several times a week, but even the soy sauce was something special. A must visit if you are in Houston. read more

Kata Robata is an exceptional Japanese restaurant which mixes the very traditional to some fun, modern flavors. Brian, our waiter, guided us through our culinary adventure. He was attentive and made great recommendations. I went with Omakase of 2 rounds of sashimi and 3 rounds of nigiri. I'm a fairly seasoned consumer of both, and was surprised by getting several different tastes of Japanese fish that I had never tried. The chef's were quite skilled, and served artisan bites. We wrapped up with a very non traditional dessert, blueberry cake with homemade earl grey ice cream - it was just yum. read more
