It is a small restaurant inside of a house with U- shaped bar seating. The service here is good. My sister and I ordered the 3 Handroll Set and added on the Holy Shiitake roll. I'd describe this place as pretty mid and overpriced. I ordered the maguro crudo along with two hand rolls--yellowtail and spicy tuna. The food was good, but nothing really stood out or impressed me enough to justify the price. The seating situation made the experience worse. It's extremely cramped--I had someone next to me constantly bumping elbows with me, which made the whole meal uncomfortable. Definitely not an enjoyable dining atmosphere. Parking is also a hassle. There are only about eight spots available, so if you don't arrive early, you'll likely have to find street parking. Prices were very reasonable for quality hand rolls and I guess their thing is ducks because they were all over the place. The service was quick too my only thing is that I wished they would explain what each one is and what makes each roll special but maybe this isn't that type of place but it would definitely elevate the place in terms of service. I got the 4 handroll set, spicy hotate, and kenpachi crudo. I also added the kiui ringo cocktail. In the 4 handroll set included Masu-ocean trout with chili garlic and I really liked the spicy at the end of the aftertaste. Negitoro-paddlefish My favorite was the Spicy Tuna because it had that crunch with it from crispy shallots and normally I don't like shallots but it really worked with this roll. Avocado- this was also good it just wasn't memorable. The kenpachi crudo was an added on al carte for me and it was interesting in that the sanbaju and chili pepper with amber jack was flavorful doused in some sauce. The spicy hotate roll had scallops in it and some green onions in it and for some reason they made it so well that it didn't overpower the roll. The cocktail kiui ringo was very dangerous it was so tasty and I wanted more. We were in the area doing some holiday shopping and decided to stop by this place for a light lunch. The place looks like a cute, small house with a giant u-shaped counter for diners. The menu is pretty small as they offer only handrolls, crudo and sashimi. We ordered the 5 handroll set (and another 3 handroll set later), kanpachi crudo and masu crudo. The handrolls are not the typical cone-shaped handrolls you normally see in sushi restaurants. These are just smaller, uncut maki rolls that you eat with your hands. They place your foods on the slate plate in front of you as they make them. Each of the handrolls we had were very tasty. I especially enjoyed the crunchy bits in the spicy tuna roll. The crudos were fabulous. The kanpachi crudo was light and fresh, with a lovely spice from the Thai peppers (you know they're there but they're not painfully hot). The masu crudo was also delicious but much lighter in flavor than expected from the chili garlic. I liked having the small plates of food and ordering more as we went when we were not completely satiated yet (and to also try more when we found something we really liked). When you're done, ask for the check and take it to pay at the register. Excellent place and will definitely return when I'm back in the area. read more

Some highlights of the meal were the masu and spicy tuna rolls as well as the spicy scallop. The scallop with the creamy and spicy sauce was one of my favorite bites of the night. The ingredients are fresh & kitchen crew roll their sushi's with finesse. This is a cute location, it's basically a house. We decided to order the 5 hand-roll set. It comes with BGB Sake, negitoro, kani, spicy tuna & avocado. You can also add bowfin caviar to your negitoro which I did. I also got the hotate that comes with 4 pieces of scallops. * BGB sake- comes with salmon. Crispy nori with warm fluffy rice that's rolled with sake? Perfection. Probably my favorite one since the salmon was fresh. 9/10 * Negitoro with caviar- this was outshined by BGB sake, but was still good. The caviar added the right amount of savory/saltiness into the roll. 8/10 * Kani- has that real lump of crab and not that imitation crab. The crab was fresh & soft. 8.5/10 * Spicy Tuna- loved it. They put either fried shallots/onions/garlic which added a nice crunch into the hand-roll. 8.5/10 * Avocado- fresh, simple but all the ingredients went well together. 8/10 * hotate (scallops)- fresh, light and the dish was well presented. Has a lot of elegance to it. 9/10 The nori seaweed they use is high in quality. It's crispy and very easy to bite through. The layout is the same as the Montrose location, stools surrounding the sushi bar. The staff were so kind to us. They're attentive to all of the customers while simultaneously making everyone's hand-rolls. I got the 5 hand-roll set and one of the crudos. Every bite I was doing the happy dance. You know.... The one where you're filled with so much joy from the bite that your body can't help but dance in your chair? That one! Everything was so fresh and delicious. It works just as well for a quick but really good meal as it does for stopping in to grab a hand roll or two between errands or before heading somewhere else. Oh how I love Handies! I'm a huge hand roll fan and no one does it better than Handies in Houston. I've been to their other location in Montrose, but I wanted to try out this location with friends just to compare. We came on a Saturday afternoon around opening time. There's street parking in front as well as along the streets in the neighborhood. Reservations are recommended as like other similar establishments, seating is limited. Everyone sits around a bar like counter and get to see the magic happen in front of you. Customer service was great. We had a few people helping us, but Kalani really stood out to me with his outgoing personality and helpfulness. I started off with the Olyshii cocktail which I was told was a good choice if I wanted something refreshing. It's a sake based drink with lychee and yuzu as the flavor profiles. It was a really nice drink that wasn't too overly sweet and was indeed refreshing. What Handies is known for is hand rolls, but they also serve sashimi and crudo. I have ordered those other items at the other location, but on this visit I was focused on the hand rolls. You can order the rolls a la carte or you can order it in sets of 3, 4, or 5. I went with the works and wanted to try 5 rolls. I don't know if there is any rhyme or reason to the roll progression, but it worked for me. First roll was the BGB Sake (salmon) followed by Negitoro (fatty tuna), Kani (crab), Spicy Tuna, and Avocado. I will say that they were all absolutely delicious and it was hard to pick a favorite. If I had to pick it would be the Kani or Spicy Tuna because of some little additions they added like a little crunch and spice. I had to practice a little restraint and not order more of those. The great thing about this type of food is that it is not heavy and you can still be productive afterwards. I honestly could not tell a difference in the two different Handies locations. I love that they add fried shallots to give it that crunch. Ambience was your traditional hand roll decor. Nothing fancy. The place is Kinda small. Now to the things that we didn't like. There were flies all over the place landing on the counters. We had to swipe them away with our hands to avoid them getting into food. With a restaurant that is serving raw food in front of you, I would think they would have some sort of Fly deterrent. And the other nasty experience was our server. I don't know his name, but he had a nose piercing. I know he wasn't preparing our food, but he was handling our food. We noticed that he had a booger hanging out of his nose and he removed it with his finger and did not perform hand hygiene after. Good thing this happened after we were done.
