Came to Koi on Sunday evening to meet a friend for happy hour. They have a small lot out front and parking was seamless. During busier times, I can see having to park on the street. Inside, it was quiet but I loved the ambiance and booths located interiorly inside the restaurant! Great place to catch up with a friend or have an intimate dinner. A great modern sushi spot right in Midtown! I came during a weekend afternoon, and it was not too busy. Perfect time to try new dishes. They have a lunch special you can't beat! Wow I really wanted to like Koi cause I've heard good things and it keeps showing up when I search for best sushi in Houston! We came on a Saturday morning for lunch and it was pretty empty. Service was good, we were the only guests. The menu looked good and so did the photos online - so we ordered a bunch of things! Agadashi Tofu - as expected. I enjoy it. Ikageso - also as expected. Enjoyed it as well. Chawanmushi - probably one of the best things we had here compared to the rest of our whole meal. It was flavorful and served hot. Contained a whole shrimp, Yum! Now that's where the good things ended.. we order led a variety of handrolls. They came with the plastic wrap so your nori doesn't get soft and you can eat at your own leisure. Cool.. but the fish was just alright. Underwhelming.. didn't taste fresh.. and we ordered some premium handrolls and it was subpar. The Waygu was chewy and greasy.. Waygu is suppose to melt in your mouth.. the foie gras was the same. So disappointed. The uni pasta was the least favorite of the day.. no uni flavor.. there was at best 2 pieces on top. The truffle didn't add to the dish and didn't really taste much like truffle at all.. and the pasta tasted strongly of butter and grease. Ack! I expected uni pasta to be refreshing.. tasting like fresh, sweet, umami flavored uni. Still can't find that perfect dish here in Houston - guess I have to go back to Italy for that. Overall, ambiance was relaxed and modern, with the wine chiller in the back. Restaurant was fairly small. Good for a date night. A few parking spots out front, otherwise it's street parking. Came here for the first time during the holiday season. My friends and I came later in the evening on Christmas Eve, so there was plenty of parking and it was pretty empty. I also personally ordered the toro taku hand roll, sake hand roll, negi hamachi hand roll and the lychee Palmer. The appetizers/entrees were all just okay to me. My favorite was the wagyu and mushroom tarts because of the seasoning on the meat and flakiness of the tart. The enoki butter and the truffle Wagyu fried rice didn't particularly stand out to me at all. It was a typical dish I feel that you can find at other restaurants. The carpaccio was probably my second favorite appetizer. Loved the what I believe was apple shavings in there to add a nice taste to the dish. The hand rolls were delicious! She gave me a visibly judgmental once-over. And then pretended to look at her screen or monitor and told me they didn't have open tables! I've never felt so unwelcome at a restaurant. So we left. The server was great and gave us some recommendations. Our order: ikageso, chawanmushi, enoki butter, aburi salmon, royal chutoro and crème brûlée. We also had 2 mocktails. Me was lychee and one was strawberry based. Ikageso (5/5) - fried squid - the breading was perfection, not too thick or thin and really held onto the squid Chawnmushi (5/5) - this is an egg custard type dish but we kept thinking it was tofu because of the silkiness - this was one of the faves, so delicious Enoki butter (4/5) - broth was light and buttery and the enoki mushrooms and veggies were a perfect pair Aburi salmon (4/5) - nice, flavorful, all the parts worked well together Royal chutoro (3/5) - I wanted to love it but didn't completely, not against trying it again bc might have been overwhelmed by all the food before it Crème brûlée (5/5) - complimentary and it was perfection, I love crème brûlée but find often that the caramelization is overdone but this was light and tasty and the fresh berries went well Overall it was a nice meal and the restaurant is really beautiful. We came to Koi for a nicer sushi night out and had a good experience! We ordered several items to try including the salmon carpaccio, the fried oysters, the unagi avocado (eel) roll, the akami zuke (marinated tuna) handroll, the crispy rice (came with 4 pieces - wagyu beef, spicy scallop, spicy hamachi, and toro fatty tuna) and the 9 piece nigiri platter. My favorite items were the crispy rice and the nigiri platter. The crispy rice added a nice texture contrast to the your standard sushi rice base, but I enjoyed the fish flavors more on the sushi platter. I think the experience could have been better if the servers could tell us what specifically went into each piece of nigiri, but I understand this can be difficult when the chef is curating each one in a unique way. The way they serve the handrolls was nice in that there's plastic between the seaweed and fillings to keep the seaweed crisp until you're ready to eat it, and there's instructions on how to remove the plastic. The ambiance is a nicer casual; there were families and people in athletic wear and others in date night attire. The parking lot is small, so you'll likely have to do street parking. read more

The parking is very limited so get there early, find street parking, or you'll have to do valet. The menu has many enticing options as well as a separate happy hour menu with quite reasonable prices. The handrolls are where its at! Fresh fish and rice well cooked along with wrapped seaweed on the outside, which helps prevent it from getting soggy and chewy before you devour it. The ikageso (fried squid) comes with appetizing taro chips and I could order it over and over again. I tried their miso soup with a description includes sweet potato and kabocha (Japanese pumpkin) but did not find it all that...only 2 mini pieces of each in a typical miso soup. With all the Japanese restaurants in Houston, I would have to say Koi is like upper middle tier. They have a variety of hot and cold foods, sushi including handrolls. The handrolls are unique in that they have a special plastic wrap around the seaweed so it stays crispy and you can eat at your own pace. They weren't that special compared to Handies/Hando, kinda basic imo. We ended up ordering the hamachi hara and kinmadai nigiri and which ended up turning the whole meal around! Its comparable to uchiko and we would definitely go back to try the different nigiris. We ended with the creme brulee that could've been skipped, it was kinda gelatiny. We came to this place twice and amazed by their food quality, service, and consistently taste delicious! Fish quality paired with just the right amount of rice made us craving for more. We love their variety of options and nigiri is always on point. Their cocktails are the bomb esp the matcha and Kyoto ones. Miso soup comes with squash and seaweed rather than tofu. The place was empty at 5p when we arrived, but started to pick up as we were leaving. Koi is a very cozy but elegant sushi restaurant in the Montrose area. I opted to try the Aburi salmon roll and the mega dragon roll. They both were delicious with different vibes. The Aburi salmon roll is a bit more light and citrusy due to the mango in the roll, and you can taste the flame-element of the torched salmon. I will say that the sauce they chose to top this roll with didn't pair as well with the fish for me, but that is personal preference. The mega dragon roll was also extremely delicious with more of a savory, slightly sweet vibe. This was also my first time tasting a matcha martini!
