A nice modern restaurant, great for date night or dinner with a group of friends. We were greeted as soon as we walked in and the servers were friendly and made great suggestions. For food we had the spicy tuna chips and crispy rice to start. For entrees I had the handroll tasting. All was tasty but not over the top amazing for this price point. Overall, a great place to try out if you enjoy sushi but be prepared to spend some money. read more

What a special find! My friend and I were looking for a cute place for happy hour and Koi did not disappoint. $9 cocktails, $6-7 hand rolls, and tapas for less than $10. The lycheetini, carajillo, and matcha were delicious and beautifully presented. I'm still dreaming about the carajillo (the salted caramel foam was to die for!) We thoroughly enjoyed our time here. Everything from the plastic-wrapped nori to maintain the freshness of the hand rolls, to the ambience and service (shout out to Ray and Ashley!) was 10/10. We will definitely be back to try their chef's features. read more

We came to this place twice and amazed by their food quality, service, and consistently taste delicious! Fish quality paired with just the right amount of rice made us craving for more. We love their variety of options and nigiri is always on point. Their cocktails are the bomb esp the matcha and Kyoto ones. Miso soup comes with squash and seaweed rather than tofu. I love their miso so much bc it didn't taste like straight up miso salty mixture. Rather, it's comforting like my mom's soup. Their wrap has large portion of fish and tastes amazing. We cannot wait to come back and discover more from their menu. Our waiter Enzo is excellent despite a busy crowd yet he made sure we are taken care of. The restaurant decoration in modern bamboo with booth seating throughout. Their large party room shaped like the rising sunset which is picture perfect. If you're in the area (Montrose/Midtown), come and support this local restaurant. You won't be disappointed! read more

The sushi was amazing! Highly recommend coming here. Our server was attentively and courteous. We came on a Sunday around 1230pm so all of our sushi came out pretty quickly and in the perfect order. Restaurant was playing some great background music which set the vibe. I enjoyed the tuna flight, royal roll, tartar, and hama chili the most. 10/10. Husband had the SkyWalker and mega dragon and I had the spider roll. Those all tasted good as well. We did end up getting a complimentary dessert of a crème brulee. It was just okay but probably would not order again. Had an eggy taste to it. It was also a little warm. Overall I would come back again for the sushi. read more

Omg. This place is my absolute favorite in Houston for high quality sushi and hand rolls. Better than Uchi dare I say. When you walk in, you're greeted by lovely hosts and a very modern yet elegant ambiance. The lighting and style of inside the restaurant is perfect for both romantic/intimate settings and a cozy atmosphere. They have lots of seating areas and a good amount of space in case you want privacy. The service here is absolutely lovely. The waiters and waitresses are so fun to talk to, and they're always so patient and friendly. They're also very attentive; they will always take away empty plates, refill waters, and always ask if you want to order extra cocktails or food. One time I asked if they could come out with a little surprise dessert for my boyfriend's special occasion, and they accommodated so thoughtfully with a sweet message for him too. The food here is incredible. Every dish is so fresh and flavorful and never disappointing. Our favorites have to be the ikageso (squid), salmon chili, sake handroll, and spicy scallop handroll. Honestly, everything is super delicious so whatever you order won't be disappointing. The fish is succulent and fresh, and everything melts in your mouth. Not to mention, they have a great happy hour deal for appetizers and drinks. We ordered the lychee martini at least 5 times! Overall, my favorite and the most underrated high end handroll/sushi place. I want to gatekeep this place so bad, but also I want to give them all of the business in the world. Will come here for every single special occasion! read more

Koi is a very cozy but elegant sushi restaurant in the Montrose area. I opted to try the Aburi salmon roll and the mega dragon roll. They both were delicious with different vibes. The Aburi salmon roll is a bit more light and citrusy due to the mango in the roll, and you can taste the flame-element of the torched salmon. I will say that the sauce they chose to top this roll with didn't pair as well with the fish for me, but that is personal preference. The mega dragon roll was also extremely delicious with more of a savory, slightly sweet vibe. This was also my first time tasting a matcha martini! I was pleased but surprised - it is also a bit more citrusy as it has notes of coconut and lime in the drink, but it was still great. Would come here again! read more

I actually don't think it deserves a star but had to give one to drop a review. We were looking to enjoy sushi here, but the hostess/greeter at the front was super rude. She gave me a visibly judgmental once-over. And then pretended to look at her screen or monitor and told me they didn't have open tables! I've never felt so unwelcome at a restaurant. So we left. Maybe a good thing. I could've gotten food poisoning eating here with the kind of rude unwelcome attitude I felt from the hostess. Never again. read more

From the moment you walk through the door at Koi, you sense that you're in for more than just a typical sushi night. The ambiance is chic yet comfortable, with dim lighting and tasteful décor creating an intimate setting ideal for dinner with friends, a date night, or even a quiet solo treat. Food & Drink Koi's strength lies in its dedication to freshness and technique. Each sushi roll feels thoughtfully composed -- clean flavors, balanced textures, and fish so fresh it almost melts in your mouth. The hand-roll flights are a standout, offering a fun way to sample a variety in one sitting. Their beverage selection complements the menu well -- the sake and craft cocktail options feel curated without being overly fancy. Service & Staff The staff at Koi strike a great balance -- professional, attentive, and friendly without hovering. They take time to help with menu selections and make helpful suggestions. Even during a busy evening, we never felt rushed. Atmosphere & Practicalities As noted by others, parking can be a bit limited, so it's wise to arrive early or plan for valet (when available). The music is kept at an enjoyable level -- not too loud to interfere with conversation, but enough to keep energy in the room. Room for Improvement A few minor things could elevate the experience further: * Some of the rolls lean toward more traditional profiles; I'd love to see even more adventurous fusion options or seasonal specials. * During peak times, wait staff may get stretched thin -- though we never waited excessively, occasional small delays were noticeable. * The lighting, while intimate, can be a touch low in some corners. For folks checking menu print or taking pictures, a slightly brighter spotlight could help. Overall Koi delivers an impressive experience. It blends high-quality seafood, solid presentation, an appealing atmosphere, and competent service. If you're in Midtown and craving sushi done right, Koi is a strong bet -- worthy of repeat visits. read more

Wow! Koi is fantastic. I've been twice now for their happy hour and have been thoroughly impressed both times. Insider tip - they have happy hour on the weekends (Tuesday through Sunday 4-6pm). The cocktails are handcrafted and take a twist on beloved classics. The lycheetini and Carajillo, made with a caramel cold foam, are both fantastic. Rolls, sashimi, and nigiri are all made to order at the sushi bar. The service is also another highlight at Koi. All of servers are extremely friendly and personable. The only downside of Koi is that parking can be a little tough, as the restaurant is located directly on Westheimer in the heart of Montrose. Valet parking is available and might be your best bet. Highly recommend Koi. I will be back! read more

Came here for dinner and there were plenty of seats despite being a Friday night! Ambiance was perfect for a date night w the mood lighting and aesthetic woodsy interior. Another one bites the dust...at least for me. Food is still great. But add Koi to the list of restaurants who have you subsidize their merchant CC fees without letting you know ahead of time (not on menus, not on website). In their case, they are charging 2.5% to use a CC. It's not about the $ amount (though that should be just part of doing business), it's that they don't let you know ahead of time and just sneak it in. Now if that's not bad enough, their tip calculation is the percent on TOP of the 2.5% CC fee AND the tax. I don't play that. read more

Service was really good and the ambiance was rly modern and private. Very romantic lighting and was able to talk without overwhelming noise. I would say definitely dress up a bit it's more upscale and they great you with a bow when u enter and exit. Food was really good! The crispy rice appetizer wasn't amazing for each one, but the spicy salmon and the wagyu ones were really yummy! I loved both of the rolls (see pics) and the ika nigiri was one of the best I've ever had. The flavor profiles were off the charts while still giving a traditional Japanese flavor profile with some elevation. The crème brûlée was really good. A bit small and I didn't get the yuzu flavor I thought I was going to get, but really enjoyed this light dessert. read more

Friend and I went on a Thursday night and it was surprisingly empty. The parking lot in front is very small (3 or 4 spots)? But we were lucky to get one. The sushi here is good! My favorite roll was the aburi salmon. We got it to share but I kept eating more lol. The torched salmon and mayo is balanced with the mango and cucumber. If I go next time, I'm definitely getting my own roll, it was worth the money. The nigiri was also great as well. Fresh and tasty, I'll come back again! read more

Went to Koi for an early Thanksgiving dinner with some coworkers. The restaurant was fairly empty and as a group of 6, we were basically the source of noise otherwise. It is a very dimly lit restaurant with occasional areas of spotlight, to help make your meal look that much more enticing. They have a large variety of options, ranging from cold plates, classic rolls, sashimi/nigiri, hot dishes, and hand rolls. They also had some chef specials. I ordered the wagyu and mushroom truffle tarts of the chef special menu as well as a spicy wagyu hand roll and a sake (salmon) hand roll. The tarts were extremely rich, with the oiliness of the wagyu and truffle adding another late of thick flavor to the wagyu and umami of the mushroom. The pastry egg tart was too stale to really cut through the thickness, but it was a very interesting couple of bites. The spicy wagyu hand roll was stuffed full with wagyu and had a nicely light kick. The meat was diced and was reminiscent of slightly spicy bulgogi. Finally, the sake hand roll- in the menu, it's listed as having avocado in it as well, but it only had large slices of salmon (nice and fatty) and rice, which while delicious, felt a little plain for a typical hand roll, more like a bigger nigiri. I also had a few bites of my coworkers' meals including the Shaggy Dog Roll, Fried Eggplant, and Truffle Fried Rice. While tasty, it was not anything particularly memorable. Service was also sparse. They allowed us to sit to chat for some time and were able to graciously split the bill 4 ways. For what it's worth, despite the cost, the portion sizes are deceptively big and quite filling. With just those three items, I was too full for dessert, although I do regret not trying their matcha Mont Blanc or yuzu cheesecake. Overall, it was a pleasant evening with good food and good people and I'll need to try their other options next time! read more

The interior was beautiful and moody. The service was amazing and everyone was really nice. The food, though, was slightly disappointing for the price. It wasn't bad but it wasn't amazing. The best thing I had was definitely the uni from their signature hand roll tasting. The sushi rolls tasted regular. The tartar was bland and kinda fishy. I will say, their cocktails are really good. I'm usually pretty picky with drinks, but my friends and I enjoyed the drinks a lot. read more

My friends and I came here for an impromptu xmas eve dinner together, and I'm glad we did! This was my second time here, and a staple dish I've ordered here twice is the waygu fried rice. Their handrolls are also good, nothing extraordinary but decent quality. The enoki butter was something we were all surprised by as it's more like a soup rather than what we originally assumed would be enoki bunches cooked in a thicker sauce, but it was still enjoyable. The matcha cocktail I had here also deserves an honorable mention. Great service both times I've came here! read more

We really enjoyed our dinner here yesterday! This place gets busy, so reservations are recommended (we were able to set them a day before). We sat at the sushi bar area and both our waitress and those working behind the bar were quite attentive to us! We ordered a good variety of rolls & a sashimi platter - everything was delicious and tasted super fresh and flavorful. My personal favorite roll of the ones we tried was el Diablo - it had a good smoky spiciness from the Serrano pepper. Honestly, you can't go wrong with anything on the menu. I got a pumpkin espresso which was quite good as well. We enjoyed our dinner and will definitely be back. read more

All the hand rolls here are solid. Very fresh fish that's marinaded and dressed quite nicely. The plastic wasn't too hard to take off the hand rolls, which was a bit daunting at first. Carpaccio was alright, usually they're more saucy so I felt this one was a bit dry and bland. The truffle fried rice was delightful. The rice was cooked perfectly and it was so flavorful and aromatic. The enoki butter surprised me because I wasn't expecting it to be a soup. While it was good and comforting, I thought it was quite plain and simple to make so it's not something I'd order again. The wagyu tarts were delicious and savory... and the pastry was so flaky and buttery! Very friendly and attentive service here! Loved that they had a parking lot as well! read more

Good food. Service was a bit slow but other than that it was a good dining experience. Loved all the hand rolls we got to try. Putting plastic wrap on the seaweed is a great way to keep the seaweed from getting soggy so we could take our time eating. We tried the sake and ikura, Negi hamachi, toro taku and uni ikura caviar. We also got the toyosu sashimi platter. I definitely recommend getting this as we got to try different kinds of fish we normally wouldn't be able to get. For hot tasting we got the enoki butter. The broth that came with this was so light and buttery. We also got the taramiso apple. The fish in this dish was so soft and flakey. Yum! read more

Yummy sushi spot in montrose! Comfortable vibe with a nice variety of options on the menu, and our server was super helpful and nice. Our absolute fav was the enoki butter dish from their hot tasting menu. Recommended to us by our server Brianna, the broth was soooo flavorful and the mushrooms soaked up every bit of that flavor. The Tara and Truffle black cod was cooked well, just would recommend maybe a little more truffle oil for personal preference. Their rolls were well made and the nigiri fish is soooo fresh. Never thought I would say this but even the Hamachi Hara held its own against the amazing Otoro - so fresh and tender. Melts in your mouth! Cocktails were all delicious and they had a good selection of sake, served appropriately in a Masu cup. Next time I come I would want to try their hand rolls. They all looked realllyyy good and they have a hand roll tasting option also. Thank you for a great meal, Koi! read more

Don't be coy, splurge at Koi! What a great sushi spot. The decor was clean and modern and the slats allowed the rooms to retain a sense of privacy while avoiding feeling cramped. Service was polite and attentive. My Koi Club cocktail was quite tasty, but I enjoyed my girlfriends lychee martini much more. Our group agreed that the matcha cocktail, though, was by far the best! Our goal was to try sushi, but the hot items we did order were delicious. I particularly enjoyed my jalapeño eggplant dish. It makes me want to return to try their other hot entrees! The star, however, was the sushi. Houston has no shortage of great sushi spots and Koi definitely holds its own! The sushi was extremely fresh and I quite enjoyed all of them. Some standouts were: Uni nigiri - one of the freshest uni I've had, so creamy and refreshing! Hotate (whole) nigiri - also incredibly fresh and sweet, you could taste the quality Kimedai nigiri - so flavorful with a little bit of smokiness I will say I found it strange that some nigiris came brushed with soy while others were not. None, however, seemed to include wasabi. It wasn't a huge deal as there was wasabi and soy sauce on the side - I'm just not accustomed to "nicer" sushi restaurants not having their nigiris dressed. Overall it was a great experience and I find myself eager to return to try other entrees and hand roll items I did not get to try. It is not quite a 5 for me only because I reserve that for the most standout of sushi places, but I would rate this a solid 4.5 if i could. read more

A beautiful new sushi spot with spacious booths! As expected in Montrose, there is limited parking in front of the restaurant but luckily it wasn't crowded on a weekday, plus there is nearby neighborhood parking if you need it. Though at times it took a while for the food to arrive, the sushi was very fresh and tasty! Our server and manager were both very friendly and frequently checked in on us. My favorite roll was Aburi Salmon - I loved the smoky flavor from the torched salmon, and the roll was very well balanced with just the right amount of mango. Next favorite item was the hotate hand roll (I got chopped spicy salmon) - lots of flavor in it! The spicy tuna chips also caught our eye and I'm so glad we ordered. The dish only comes 5 chips, but the meat was cold and refreshing with a slight kick at the end. Honorable mention goes to Dragon Roll and Beef Tatake, both drenched with good flavor. Food is slightly over priced, but overall great quality! read more

Koi is known for its sushi handrolls, but I found the experience to be just okay. As someone who's particular about sushi, the quality didn't stand out, and while the handrolls were decent, I've had better elsewhere. However, the ambiance is a highlight--sleek modern decor and a cozy atmosphere and booths make it an ideal spot for a date night. If you're more into the vibe than the sushi itself, Koi might be worth a visit, but serious sushi lovers might find it lacking. Great attentive service though! Overpriced, uninspired sushi. Nothing was very exciting, and the prices felt high for what they were offering. The hand roll flight was attractive,, but they don't hold a candle to places like Handies or Hando's. The venue has dim lighting, which would have been perfect for date night if the acoustics weren't so bad. We could hear the table behind us so clearly that I am now fully invested in some stranger's work drama. Service was nice, but with the incredible amount of sushi options in Houston, Koi is not somewhere I'd return to. read more

I've passed by this place numerous times, and as sad it was to see kamalan bakery close, I wasn't surprised. Westheimer is tough especially on this side. We sat at the bar, right at opening (5PM), so it was quiet but the bartender was peppy. They have a pretty decent happy hour menu which is actually what prompted my visit. We had plans at 6pm, and their happy hour is just one hour. We ordered between us: 2 lychee martinis $18 1 espresso martini $9 Philadelphia roll $7 gyoza $7 ikageso $7 spicy tuna chips $10 shaggy dog roll (not on HH) $13 spicy hotate hand roll (not on HH) $8 We ended up chatting with the manager, Ray and the sushi chef who were both pleasant and friendly. This is how I found out that it's only been open 2 months and the sushi chef just moved here from NY. the chef made the Philadelphia roll with fatty salmon belly pieces, and it was a game changer for a typically basic roll. Koi is still super new, about 2 months fresh, but it exceeded my expectations of it. I didn't have any but my experience was good. The bartender kinda disappeared after awhile and we kept having to find her. for me, it was the details. they have plastic around the nori on each one, so that it doesn't get soggy. little chopstick holder within their soysauce dish. their set up is just beautiful and the restaurant itself is so zen. read more

My friend and I decided to come here for her birthday since another friend said that this place was worth the hype. The food was good for the price but while the servers were nice it was a bit disorganized. I would give this place a 3 but because they seem to be in the soft opening phase I'll give them a 4 since I liked the food. Food: I liked how they incorporated apples into some of their dishes and it was good enough to make me want to go back. Tuna tower: 5 This was my favorite dish. I loved how they incorporated apple which brought a different texture to the tower and how they gave us seaweed to make it into a roll. It was extremely refreshing Taramiso Apple: 4 It was an inventive dish and I liked how fish was flavored by the citrus flavor of the apple. The past that was grilled was nicely caramelized and the fish was very smooth. Mega dragon: 4 I liked the sweet and spicy profile of this roll. There was a nice portion of tuna and eel but it was one of their pricier rolls. Unagi roll: 3 It was an average eel roll but the eel was a bit over done so it was a bit soft Handroll: 4 The rice was good and I liked how they protected the seaweed with plastic so it stays fresh Sake&Ikura: It was a good roll but nothing special. Negi Toro: The scallion was refreshing but it kind of over powered the toro for some bites Creme brûlée: 3 It was good but pretty average Service: While the servers were sweet and kept checking on me when my friend was 30 mins late. They were also really nice when explaining the menu but so much went wrong. My friend and I were at the sushi bar, it wasn't busy but I want to think that they may be what caused some confusion. We were served by 3 people and out of the four times we ordered only one came out correctly. Our main server seemed new so another server had to help him but another server also got an order wrong. At the end, the server asked if our creme brûlée was good when he brought the bill but we had even gotten the creme brûlée. Also, I asked the hostess to have Happy Birthday written on the dessert and I'd pay for it but it wasn't conveyed to the servers. The hostess also said the dessert would be free but it was on my tab. Parking: There is no valet. It's a small lot with around 5 spaces and 3 more spots if you parallel. However there is also street parking nearby Disclaimer: If you notice that they made mistakes with your order make sure to ask for an itemized receipt! The recipient I received was not itemized. read more

Also the vibe inside was very modern but relaxing. I ordered the brunch bento box which had so many goodies in it! The tempura was light and crispy. The piece of salmon was perfectly cooked. The get their fish from Japan so the sashimi was fresh and delicious. Even the miso soup was a big winner. They make their own stock with fish bones and seaweed and use pumkin and sweet potatoes instead of tofu and it's delicious. My favorite item was the Chawanmushi (egg custard but savory).
