Fantastic option for fresh sushi. We began our experience with a bottle of chilled Perfect Snow sake and crisp salad. Our attentive server recommended the golden eye snapper. We were very pleased! Although I was quite clumsy with their sake hand roll, it was worth the effort, as it was loaded with tender salmon and silky avocado. We'll be back. After all, I'm determined to conquer the popular selection of hand rolls. read more

Absolutely wonderful spot to go for sushi! We went for a reservation for my girlfriends birthday and had a great time. The restaurants vibe is really nice and relaxed. We got a booth in the back and each one had its own sort of book which felt private and intimate and like we had the place to ourselves. The tables had lighting was neat as it almost felt like a spotlight onto the table for the upcoming food to be the star of the show, which it absolutely was. We started of the meal with a cocktail off the menu which I can't remember for the life of me, but definitely check with your server as our waitresses recommendation was right on the spot with the strawberry-like lemon drop drink. For our order we went with the tuna tower, the salmon flight, the bluefin flight, the yellowtail belly nigiri, the hotate nigiri, the uni, and some extra chutoro and otoro. Everything was just so good it was hard to not just keep ordering more regardless of how full we were. Honestly I don't think there is a single thing I wouldn't want to try and will probably be back for more. In comparison to other places near by the sushi is easily on the top of the charts and felt like it was overall a better value than some other places I have been in the area. I would definitely recommend for a date night! read more

Koi was amazing, we went right when they opened for dinner service at 4 PM and got seated very quickly. It was happy hour so certain items were discounted. Loved trying a bunch of items. My favorite rolls were the el diablo and royal chutaro. The spicy garlic edamame was very good in flavor but a little overcooked. Gyoza was bomb. For me the lychee martini is the best ive had in houston so far, better than nobu. Ambience is very nice and quaint. I will definitely be returning as i had a great first impression. Hands down best sushi I've had in Houston. The hand rolls were perfectly crafted with the ratio of fish to rice in a crispy seaweed wrap. The nigiri was amazing as well, with the glaze and topping on each that perfectly enhances the flavor of the fish. Happy hour prices were super reasonable as well. 10/10 recommend read more

Koi - Espresso Martini - Sushi Bars Near Me - Houston, Texas

Koi sushi is located in Montrose and has become a favorite spot as of recently. The interior design inside the restaurant is top tier and has modern and traditional Japanese accents. The service is great, and it is super cute for an intimate date night or a special get together. I have gotten their chef's special 6 piece nigiri twice, and it is amazing! Their nigiri special changes often, and despite going twice a week, all of the pieces were different with the exception of the salmon and tuna. All of the fish were soft and had a great presentation. The handrolls also had seaweed that were wrapped, and the servers help explain how to take the plastic off. This plastic keeps the seaweed fresh and reminded me opening an onigiri. The seaweed was indeed crispy, and it was fun to do so. It has to be one of the best sushi spots in Houston! I also got some of their cocktails and got the Matcha Made in Heaven, Espresso Martini, and a daily special drink. The drinks were well-made and were smooth. The Matcha Made in Heaven had a gingery taste, and the Espresso Martini tasted like a cold brew! Overall, Koi has become one of my favorite restaurants in Houston and has great sushi for a reasonable price. Their drinks are also delicious, and I would come just to visit the bar. read more

Babes. You gotta go. First, it's a beautiful restaurant in general--took me straight to Japan. Service is top notch. Happy hour prices are decent. Now I'll say, the sushi isn't the best I've ever had--but drinks and vibes made up for it. After we ate, we decided to move to the bar for another drink. Sushi chef, Masa, convinced us to get some nigiri. The escolar and yellowtail! Whew. Hit the spot. FIVE STARSSSSSS. read more

Very good sushi. The fish just melts in your mouth. They have a variety of sushi reasonably priced so you can try everything! The mock tails are also very refreshing. The atmosphere is nice, feels fancy without the prices attached to the word. Good lunch and dinner place if you're looking to go somewhere nice. Gyoza is also very tasty. read more

The hand rolls were meh. The plastic wrapping made them even more difficult to deal with than usual. When I pulled them out, the filling came out with it. For setting f the bar and comparison, I use Handies Duzo. Koi doesn't have a sophisticated handroll system like Handies does. They bring out all the rolls at once. The first one I had was pretty crispy. But after that, the seaweed paper was soggy. The plastic wrappers are meant to keep it crispy, but it was still soggy. Another thing that differs and makes Handies better is that Koi's handrolls are open on top, and due to this, the filling kept falling out, and pieces had to be picked up. WOW! This place can be no less than 5 stars from me. I haven't been this excited about a sushi spot in years. There's something about this place that goes toe to toe with top omakase spots around while being a considerable amount more affordable than other places. I've been meaning to go here for a while since I frequent Houston spots but had missed a reservation months ago from being sick. Returning this time, it seemed to be a place where reservations aren't needed. It was almost empty but was nice, clean, and had a good ambience. Our waitress was very attentive and had great recommendations. Coming during happy hour made everything even better. Certain cocktails down from around $15 to $9, and if you need any idea about how beautiful theirs are, PLEASE check out the picture of the espresso martini with a metal toothpick through the toasted marshmallow. It's explanatory enough about how great their drinks are here. The mango sticky rice cocktail wasn't included in happy hour, but it is worth it at full price as well. As for the food, everything was good! All the fish was flavorful and tender. The hand rolls were also discounted for happy hour and were so good! I love that the film is plant based so you don't feel bad that you insist on your nori not being soggy. If you're coming during happy hour, you might as well get the most decorated hand rolls. The menu is much bigger than just raw fish, but it's a necessity to indulge in the sushi. Even my partner claims this is now one of his favorite places to eat in Houston with how good the food is and what a bang for your buck this is as well. There isn't much to be iffy about, this place is definitely a spot I could frequent. No idea why it isn't more popular, but an overall recommend from me. read more

Delicious happy hour specials! My martini was well made. Perfect ratio of gin, vodka, and vermouth. The taste and texture of the takoyaki was the same as I've had on the streets of Osaka. The tuna chips was suggested by another party sitting nearby. I'm glad we tried it. The soft texture of the tuna and crispness of the chip was a good combination. Brianna was our server. She was very attentive and friendly. read more

First off, best takoyaki in town. I have made my own takoyaki in addition to eating them in Japan, and there is nowhere in the country that I have ate the perfect takoyaki other than at Koi. The outside is crispy. There is abundant topping on top of each takoyaki that you will have plenty of leftover crumbs to have another bite. Best of all, they put two octopus pieces in each of the takoyaki, so if you are like me and take small bites, you will have an octopus piece each time you bite into it. Best of all? $7 for 6 pieces during happy hour. It was so good that we ordered another plate, and I rarely have two of something. Everything else is great. Their handroll are good quality, some I like more than others. Their service is excellent. Ambiance is great for family night, date night, or just a solo night. Overall, I would come here primarily for their takoyakis (and get other stuff as well). read more

Koi has always been on my list of sushi restaurants that I wanted to try. We walked in on a busy Friday night without reservations. The hostess was kind enough to seat us at a table with a nice view of the restaurant. Food was delicious and fish was so fresh. They were literally melted in your mouth with each bite of nigiri or hand roll. We ordered house salad, spicy garlic edamame, spicy tuna chips for appetizers. Everything was so good! Edamame came out hot with good flavor. I loved the salad! The dressing on the salad was so good! We then ordered hand roll set, bluefin flight, 6 pieces nigiri platter, sweet shrimp nigiri and unagi nigiri. All were delicious! My favorite would be uni hand roll from the set. It is such a cute place for a date night! Highly recommended! read more

Upscale restaurant with an amazing ambiance and vibe. Had valet and street parking. The service was great, the people were friendly, and the food was quite good as well. I was there for a work dinner and we ordered the Tara & Truffle (8/10), Koi Ribeye (7/10), & Handroll Tasting (7/10). Some ingredients are meant to shine on their own. I think one toro would have been enough, and I would've liked to enjoy the foie-gras/cavier separately from the uni. Great ingredients can usually shine well on their own and sometimes when you mix them together, it takes away from their individual flavors and drowns each other out. Overall, it was a great meal and experience for such a young redstaurant. Looking forward to seeing more growth from this place. They offered a complimentary espresso martini with a torched marshmello, and it was a great way to end the meal. Loved it. read more

Koi is above average restaurant in Houston compared to other sushi restaurants. The food is good and reasonable for the price that you pay. The fish is fresh. Of course I would expect more in the flavors. I came with a friend. We shared the Taramiso Apple and Aburi Salmon Roll. Each of us got a Nigiri Platter and Spicy Bluefin Tuna Handroll. I was most impressed by the Taramiso Apple, the marinated miso black cod was so soft and delicious. I wad quite disappointed because the server told me that we're going to get some from the list of toyosu special (fish imported from Japanese - also more expensive). However, the only I got from that list is Hirame. Additionally, the food came out pretty slow, I waited about 20+ minutes for each dish, even though the restaurant was not that busy. Our server - Ashley was really sweet, friendly, dedicated and passionate. I love the interior inside of the restaurant, super iconic and classic of Japanese vibes. They offered complimentary valet parking, free mochi ice cream or Espresso Martini when you leave them a review. My visit was on Friday, November 29, 2024. read more

Enjoyed our time at Koi! We recommend sitting at the bar spot. It was truly a pleasure watching Chef Masa prepare the sushi, and also give me a slight breakdown of each piece I ordered in the Tokyo Seven Nigiri flight. Brianna was an amazing server! Took a while to seat us. Thought we were coming for omakase dinner, but apparently we only booked the regular dining reservation. It would've been nice if their website posted the event was sold-out (misleading since there was a button to click "Book Omakase" which then takes you to an info description, as you scroll it showed various times to reserve/area you want to sit). Excited upon arrival but a bit disappointed since we came for something we thought we signed up for. The vibes inside are nice; good date night spot. Matcha cocktail ($14) was interesting but sweeter than expected. Cold tasting: Crispy rice (only the outer part of the rice is crispy; good at first but heavier than it looks; should've just ordered one for 2 people) Hot tasting: - Kaki fry (oysters) was good only the first few bites; got tiring, and there was a mild bitter after taste - Tara and truffle (black cod & mushroom) was unexpectedly addicting; something I would come back for! - A5 waygu steak had incredible flavor and was amazing quality! Roll: El Diablo ($16, spicy salmon) was good Nigiri: Hotate (chop spicy) and ungagi were tasty, but the seaweed used for both were a bit salty Madai sashimi (3pc $14) was fresh and delicious! Tiramisu was ok. Albert was super friendly as our server! Would recommend this restaurant! read more

I was unfortunately not blown away. The flavors weren't new or complex. Nothing that caught my attention to come back. So yes it was a bit disappointing in terms of uniqueness. But I will say all the fish tasted very good and fresh! * Salmon Carpaccio 6.8/10 (nothing new, not special) * Crispy Rice 6.5/10 (way too much rice and sauce) * Sashimi Platter 8/10 (nice and fresh) * Hand roll Tasting 7.8/10 (some rolls were lacking in flavor, a bit disappointed since it was very pricey) * Crème Brûlée 8/10 (great balance) read more

Came here for date night, purely on a recommendation from TikTok. The whole vibe and ambiance here is perfect if you're wanting an intimate and romantic setting. We made reservations for 7 on a Friday night and we were immediately seated. We started the night off with drinks, and I ordered some sort of matcha cocktail which was just so delightful and delicious. I definitely would recommend the matcha drink! And my fiancé ordered the smoky old fashioned. We ordered the Hama chili to start and it was all just perfect with the light sauce and the chilies, it wasn't really spicy either. It was very fresh and light and a perfect way to start our meal for the main course - we both opted for the handroll tasting which comes with 5 delicious handrolls that are super filled! It is honestly more than enough to fill you up. The Wagyu and foie gras and the uni and caviar hand rolls were my absolute favorites! And I also had to order the otoro and salmon belly nigiri because they're my favorite cuts - which were both just amazing, fatty, and so fresh. We ended the evening with crème brûlée for dessert which was lightly sweet and had a hint of tartness from the yuzu, making it balanced and so yummy. Overall, I highly recommend this place. It's perfect for a date night, service was great, and the food was top notch! read more

Looked forward to celebrating Valentine's Day here. Came for lunch to avoid the holiday crowd. There are some parking spots in front of the restaurant, which is a bonus for the area. Upon arrival, there were only two other tables of two, and they already gotten their food. The waitress brought out the drinks and we asked for a few minutes to finalize our selections. In the next couple minutes, three other parties arrived. We told the waitress we were ready but she told us to hang on as she brought out drinks for the other tables and took their orders. Despite being seated first, we were the last party to place our order. Not a good sign of the service to come. We enjoyed the chirashi bowl and the El Diablo roll. Do not recommend the sashimi sampler as the pieces were small and the hostess dropped it off without telling us what was on the plate. Again, subpar service. The wagyu fried rice was good but contained very little beef, half of which were chewy inedible fat. Our waitress came by once to ask if we needed anything else and never noticed our empty water cups. When making the reservation, we noted a celebration but that was completely ignored. 4 stars for the food, 1 star for the service. read more

Someone I know here in Houston happens to be a huge foodie. She's also such a fun, welcoming personality too. We had a party of four here at Koi. It was so fun! The food was really great too! Very high quality fish and drinks, at such reasonable prices too. Take a look at ALL the pictures I posted. Everything was really good! Make sure you book reservations early. If not, try visiting on Sunday nights, which isn't too packed like it normally is. Otherwise, if you try coming here during prime time, you may not be able to get a table. We decided we wanted sushi and instead of hitting our goto, we decided to try something new. Sadly, we had a far less than pleasant experience at KOI. It honestly may have been a bad night at the restaurant but we will not be back. For simplicity I will list our experience issues 1. We went to KOI based on a Yelp review which raved about their lychee martini, my wife's favorite. When we arrived there was a sign on the door saying due to an illness they were unable to serve mixed drinks or mocktails...no lychee martini tonight...should have taken that as an omen. 2. After we were seated immediately it took well over 10 minutes for someone to greet us or bring water. 3. When the waiter finally arrived, after I had to goto the hostess stand to inquire about a waiter, he had an attitude. No greeting, no apology, just attitude in answering our questions etc. 4. We ordered appetizers which were just ok including a lukewarm miso soup and a crispy rice dish which left alot to be desired. 5. Our food in general wasn't very good and we ordered quite abit hoping to find something we liked. We really didn't. That was our mistake. We should have left when we saw the no mixed drinks sign. Lesson learned! read more

Made a reservation for 7:30 on a Thursday night- was seated immediately. Would make a reservation if you're going. The service was insanely slow - might be because of it being a new restaurant but it literally took 20 min to get handed water once we were seated. We didn't finish our meal until about 945pm and we eat FAST so this was honestly grueling. I'm not one to normally get upset by slow service but honestly it was preposterous - like it's ok for the food to take a while to come out but to take over thirty minutes to take my order is crazy. The handrolls were pretty tasty but a bit cumbersome to eat. It's an interesting concept - they wrap the seaweed in plastic to keep it from getting soggy from the rice. But it's a bit difficult to unwrap the seaweed without dumping the handroll contents a bit. The Negitoro and shrimp tempura were the best ones! The sashimi was generous but too thickly cut imo. I personally love when it's cut thinly so it's more melt in your mouth but the fish flavor and quality was pretty good. The agenasu was a massive hit - would order again. Maybe for takeout tho to avoid the slow service. I would recommend this restaurant for take out OR if you're one to enjoy sitting for a while and not starving. read more
