My girlfriend and I visited Oru for a birthday dinner and decided to try the Chef's Tasting Menu for two. At $200, we actually thought it was a fair value for the amount and quality of food we received, and overall we enjoyed the experience. The meal was good from start to finish, and there wasn't a single bite that we really disliked. The nigiri was fresh and high quality, the Cornish hen was tender and reminded us of a Vietnamese-inspired marinade, and the crudo was unique with cucumber and a jelly component that added an interesting contrast of textures. The dessert was also a nice way to end the meal. That being said, my girlfriend and I weren't really impressed by any of the dishes. The biggest disappointment was probably the Wagyu lumpia. It wasn't bad by any means, but it mostly tasted like an upscale egg roll and wasn't as memorable as we had hoped. Overall, Oru delivered a solid dining experience with quality ingredients and thoughtful presentations. I would absolutely recommend it to others looking for a special occasion dinner. The parking lot is pretty small and there's no valet, so it's a little tough getting in and out. They also seem to limit how many people they let in, so reservations are probably required. I came here for my birthday and the service was pretty mid. I was a little disappointed because the atmosphere makes it seem like it would be more of an upscale place, but the service didn't match that at all. We weren't welcomed or asked if we were celebrating anything, which I kind of expected. I had a few questions about some of the dishes and the server couldn't really answer them and had to go back and ask. He also didn't seem aware of any birthday or celebration things they offer, which made the whole experience feel a little underwhelming. I tried the 6 course meal and added on a scallop, cucumbers(sunomono), chutoro, otoro, and savory taiyaki from the à la carte. I also tried a couple of their drinks the pandan and yuzu matcha. First, the 6 course meal started off with a salad (Popeyes salad) and that was topped with a bacon dressing. I would give that 4 stars. The next item that came out was the kanpachi crudo and that was a refreshing yuzu flavor and interesting coconut jellies that paired well. I give that 5 stars, it's a must try dish. They brought out the waygu lumpia next and that was crispy and savory waygu on the outside. This is also 5 stars as a must try dish. Then they brought out the flight of fish-Suzuki sea bass, madai butterfish. The flavors for each one of these were unique and something I've never tried before. The quality of the fish was silky and fresh. I'd give them 4 stars on this just because some of the flavors did not really hit for me. I also think they use brown rice which is interesting and I actually like the take on that. Then Uni was next and that was melt in your mouth and buttery, also 5 stars. Last they brought out was the Cornish hen and that was filling and so tender. It came with broth which really elevated the dish. The potato's that came as a side with it was odd with a mustardy dressing, I don't think it paired well with the dish. For dessert, a pistachio molten lava cake. It was a little bit too rich for my taste but it similar to a Dubai dessert without the chocolate and Kanafi. I give that 3 stars. I was also given an extra dessert for my birthday which I chose the coconut ice cream that had wasabi jelly. Surprisingly, the jellies did not taste like wasabi and this dessert was amazing. It was creamy and light, 5 stars. The added items that I tried were the cucumbers and that had a spicy flavor and sour, 4 stars. Then the otoro and chutoro which the quality of the fish was fresh, 4 stars. The scallop was next level I highly recommend this. It was perfectly seared and had a velvety melt in your mouth texture. That one was by far my favorite out of all the dishes. The savory tayaki was unique I can't even really explain the taste but the butter that it comes with is smoked, 4 stars. The pandan alcoholic drink was way too strong and I think ruined the pandan flavor for me, 2 stars. The yuzu matcha (non alcoholic) was very bright and refreshing. I'm a big fan of Neo so I was excited to try this place. The highlights are definitely the fish pastries and roe, the chicken and Wagyu lumpia. So I'll start off with saying that the service was just amazing. Staff was super attentive and all so very friendly and kind. I came here for lunch and ordered off their HH menu and lunch menu as well. The non-sushi items were actually the stand out items for me. The tempura shrimp was really delicious and had a nice crunch. I got the shrimp udon off the lunch menu and that was very tasty. A bit salty for me though so if they toned back the salt a bit it would be perfect. The sushi really didn't stand out to me unfortunately. I was in town visiting a friend who hadn't been to Oru yet so we made reservations for a Friday around 8:15pm. We were immediately sat, asked if we were celebrating anything, and had a super cute and friendly server, Kaylee (I think that was her name!) who helped us work through the menu. We picked a few appetizers and nigiri (scallop was incredible). The tuna crispy rice was heavenly. I loved the Wagyu lumpia but my friend did not (probably a mistake on our part to order). Some of the flavor with the nigiri was almost too overwhelming, taking away the flavor from the fish, but we still enjoyed it. The uni was buttery and delicious and absolutely hit the spot. We never made it into Neo before it closed so I was very excited to try out Oru. We had a 6:45pm reservation for 4 people on a Saturday night. When I made the reservation you could book either the dining room or the bar so I was a little surprised to find that the dining room is also all sushi counter. We arrived promptly at 6:45 but weren't seated until around 7pm. They were apologetic about the wait and brought out some sake for us to drink which was very hospitable. We were eventually seated at the corner of the sushi counter which was great because we were still able to visit as a 4 top. For dinner we ordered a hodge-podge of different items but we especially enjoyed the Tuna Crispy Rice, Okage (Mushroom Porridge), and the fresh nigiri. For dessert we had the coconut sorbet. I am personally not much of a sweets gal, but this was OUTSTANDING. The texture was pillowy and almost marshmallow like and was so light and delicious. When we come back I will for sure be ordering the banana ice cream with caviar because if the coconut sorbet is this good then that is for sure worth trying. We came on Monday for their maki Monday and made it just in time for happy hour too! It was really good - loved the wagyu roll and also the Cornish hen was great and everything else was good too. My favorite pieces were the first three pieces the scallop, the sea bass and another white fish. Other pieces didn't stood out as much. Really lovely omekase experience. Simple interior design, fresh food. Taiyaki, fish-shaped cakes, coupled with roe and a hay-smoked butter was very smoky & flavorful. The wagyu lumpia is intended to be eaten quickly to stay crispy. Wagyu is wrapped around a deep-fried egg roll stuffed with mushroom duxelles and was all things lovely. We finished off our night with pistachio coulant that was warm & delicious. We also had the banana ice cream with caviar - this surprisingly intriguing combo worked well. Highly recommend this place, whether it be for a meet up with friends, or a date night. Reservations can be made on RESY and I definitely recommend making them about a week out. There is a parking lot, but it is pretty small. Based on the small seating amount, you should most likely be able to find a spot. Now to the good stuff! There is a daily specials sheet of paper that you will get that will have the specials for the day. Then there is a main menu that has starters, salads, and soups, means, and various sashimi and Nigiri. There's also a great cocktail list and wines by the bottle and glass. My friend and I got the Omakase and it was $179 for two people and we definitely felt like it was worth it! You got to try quite a variety of items from each category of the menu. (Pics to follow!) overall, I felt like this place is such a great addition to the heights! It definitely seems a little more casual than most of Omakase places in town, so it's a great place to stop right after work or if you're just bouncing around the area. Oru's food and service were both excellent. Our group went with the chef's selection for our dinner (less decisions to make!) and were very pleased by the variety of nigiri, trout roe, hot dishes and dessert--really, every course was delicious. My favorite was the starter trout roe--it's served with these cute puffy breads in the shape of fish, so it looked cute AND tasted delicious. Service was impeccable, totally worthy of the prices that Oru charges. Overall, Oru may not be my favorite sushi spot in Houston (I honestly couldn't tell you why), but it is an excellent choice if you want an upscale sushi experience. read more

Would also like to add that they had an issue requiring us to push back our time, and since we had planned to be there for happy hour they extended that window of time for us which was much appreciated by us. Minimalist omakase situation that's only been open for a month ― the interior was stark and it was also quite chilly inside (most people kept their jackets on). The menu was inventive and interesting, with an option for a chef's tasting of all courses (which includes the nigiri tasting) or a la carte. Upscale prices and relatively small portions, so be prepared to order two of an item rather than share. Our server, Efraín, was incredibly friendly and attentive. He was very helpful and asked about dietary restrictions, checked with the kitchen about the dishes, and was anticipatory about everything. Always kept our water glasses full, which I am always grateful for. The nigiri flight was lovely, and we noted that all of their sushi courses already had soy sauce added so there was no dipping needed. The wagyu we ordered definitely tasted like it buttter in it so the kitchen might have missed that on the dietary restriction part (when we noted a dairy allergy), but all good. Oru is the newest concept from the same people as Neo and Kira where you can order items à la carte. Oru is minimally designed with U-shaped seating. They have a small private parking lot or street parking off of 24th. The staff is attentive and the chefs are still warm and approachable as they were when I dined at Neo and Kira. The Trout Roe Service was whimsical with the taiyaki and the Tofu Karaage was a surprise stand out. The Nigiri were fresh and desserts were unique and great way to end the meal. read more

Came here on a Friday night for their omakase. Their parking lot is small, but we luckily all got spots. Check in was smooth, and we were promptly seated at their U-shaped sushi bar. The omakase consisted of 6 courses - hamachi crudo, salad, wagyu lumpia, 5 nigiri, salmon, and a dessert. We thought all courses were solid, with the highlights being nigiri flight (fave was akami with freeze dried strawberry garnish) and the lumpia. I opted for barley tea. An interesting experience. We had a nice dinner date at Oru, and enjoyed their omakase. The vibe is minimalist with low level indirect lighting, plastered walls, and minimal decor. Discreet and unobtrusive, there is also no valet, just a small (but accommodating) parking lot. Which is perfect because it is limited seating around the chefs. Service is friendly and thorough. The chefs are amazing at their skill. Why not 5 stars from me? Because the actual meal fell flat. I was expecting much more traditional sushi and only got one dish with sashimi while the rest were specially constructed dishes. Don't get me wrong, the dishes were interesting and thoughtfully curated. But I felt a bit overloaded with salmon, especially when one course was practically an entire dinner plate with about 4oz of cooked salmon and a veggie with another side. It felt heavy. In addition, there were 2 wagyu dishes. Most wouldn't complain, but I felt overfilled with calories and would've rather had smaller dishes to enjoy instead of such heavy items. Sounds silly as I write this, but that's how I felt and honestly can't remember any one dish that really wowed me. The food was perfectly prepared. Dine here for our Anniversary. Omakase for 2 would come around $220 I think, ordered some a la cartes and the bill came around $400 with tip included. The omakase course alone is solid but nothing memorable, I'd appreciate if the chef could put a little bit more effort into describing the dishes.
