    Masu hand roll
    Saavi S.

This was my third visit to this restaurant. The first time I came, I absolutely loved it. The sushi experience felt personal and intimate, and I appreciated that we could still enjoy conversation while sitting at the bar. Since it was our first time dining this way, the staff was attentive and took the time to explain everything. We also had the chance to chat with the owner, which made the experience even more memorable. The food has always been outstanding. The hand roll sets are absolutely worth it, and my favorite dish is actually the crudo. Unfortunately, the service has declined with each visit. During our second visit, we assumed the lack of attention was because the restaurant was packed and likely understaffed. However, our third visit made it clear that wasn't the issue. Throughout the meal, we were consistently overlooked. We were never offered water refills, had to repeatedly flag down staff just to order, and even had to ask the chefs to get a server's attention. Meanwhile, the tables on either side of us were regularly checked on and served promptly. We watched guests who were seated both before and after us receive much more attentive service. Eventually, we left earlier than planned because we were tired of waiting just to order more food. It's disappointing because the food is genuinely excellent, but after multiple visits with declining service, it's hard to justify coming back.

Came here for a light dinner on a Friday night and the place was so lively and fun! Definitely was not expecting the atmosphere based on the outside and the small, intimate sushi bar set up. Staff were super friendly and my partner and I had a fun time soaking up the environment and chatting with our server. We ordered the 5 handroll set along with various crudos to share along with drinks. I had the olyshii and found it to be very refreshing and had a nice sweetness to it. Handroll wise my favorite of the set was the kani followed by the negitoro. I think overall, the handrolls were very well done with fresh fish/seafood. For crudo we got the scallop and the hamachi, I really enjoyed the scallop crudo but thought the hamachi was really overpowered by the sauce. We also ended up getting the hokkaido uni handroll. It wasn't my favorite but I think I just prefer my CA uni so it just didn't quite hit the mark for me. Overall, this was a really fun spot with good handrolls. I'm glad its close by and will be a nice treat to return to.

Good luck with parking... Anyway, the service was friendly and efficient, and I ordered the 4-Hand-Roll set! All the rolls were delicious and filling, but my personal favorites were the Negitoro and Spicy Tuna, and I loved that each of them had their own distinct taste; I will admit, though, I got adventurous and ordered their Spicy Hotate, which I was not a fan of whatsoever. There was barely any spice, and I was not a fan of the texture. Nonetheless, you definitely get a lot of value for the money you spend at Handies, and I look forward to returning!

Went to grab lunch with my cousins. Had a reservation so was seated right away. The decor is super cute, with tons of rubber duckies and figurines. It's designed like a bar, so you can watch the chefs make the rolls. We opted for the scallop crudo and the hamachi crudo, which were delicious. I don't usually like scallops, but the sauce pairings really cut out any fish flavor. We all opted for the 3 hand roll set, which was $17. It included masu (tasty, a little spicy, probably my least favorite), hamachi (so yummy, smooth with lovely crunchy mix-ins), and spicy tuna (so good, just a nice light kick of spice, no fishy taste). My cousin has a lot of allergies and they were super great with accommodating her including gluten free soy sauce and substitutions for the spicy mayo in the spicy tuna roll. Overall, super yummy! Will definitely need to be back!

Can't go wrong with this handroll spot! Service is great and quick. It is smaller so it serves a more intimate setting. The quality of the fish in the handrolls and crudo are amazing for inexpensive prices. This is a spot that I will keep coming back to!

FANTASTIC hand roll bar! It competes with the best places I've had back home in Los Angeles. The interior was clean and staff were friendly. Dishes and hand rolls are small so order lots to try different dishes! We initially started with the 4 hand roll set. I really enjoyed the Negitoro of the 4. The hand roll set was good, but the crudo is where this place really shines!! Favorites: - Ume Mash Crudo - the miso coconut vinegrette is so unique and pairs really well with the fish! - Maguro Crudo - ponzu sauce was SO refreshing and quality of the tuna was exceptional. Honestly, you could order ANYTHING on the menu and it would be delicious. I highly recommend Handies Douzo!

This place serves fresh sashimi and hand rolls!!! I can confidently say everything on the menu is great!! I particularly love the scallops crudo. Service was great and friendly, and it's a small place where people sit at the bar so it does get packed super quickly specially during lunch time. Food: 9.5/10 Value: 8/10 Service: 9/10 Atmosphere: 9/10

Great value, quick service, and tasty hand rolls. 5 hand rolls for under $30 is fantastic. Fun atmosphere - it's super clean and you're in and out within an hour. Definitely not a fancy fancy spot for a date night, but would come here if you're in the area and craving some sushi!

All time favorite sushi spot in Houston. Corking fee so you can bring your favorite bottle or two, crudo options are the best in town, and their tuna... good God, the tuna. Toro, chutoro, and otoro... mouth watering and will have you itching to order more. That's not even mentioning the handrolls which are spectacular as well. Service is great, vibes always outstanding, and a spot I often recommend to friends and family visiting Houston. Hard to find a negative comment or experience.

If only Handies Douzo was "all you can eat!" This was my first time here but I will definitely be back (maybe within the next week or so). I got the 4 hand roll set which includes BGB Sake, Negitoro, Spicy Tuna, and Avocado hand rolls. The fish and toppings for each roll complimented each other so well. If I had to choose two favorites, it would definitely be the Spicy Tuna and Avocado hand rolls since they both have a nice added crunch! In addition to the hand roll sets, Handies Douzo offers sashimi, crudo, and a la cart hand rolls. Of course, I got one of each. I tried the hamachi sashimi, kanpachi crudo, and one more avocado hand rolls after loving it so much. The kanpachi crudo was delicious and served very beautifully, but the hamachi sashimi was extra bomb! Definitely melted in my mouth. Service is really friendly and the chefs whip up the hand rolls and other dishes pretty fast. Right when you finish a hand roll, they'll have the next one in the set ready on your plate for you to grab. The bar set up is really fun as you can interact with others, and the selection of rubber ducks around the bar is entertaining. Parking can be a bit difficult as there is a limited amount of spots on-site but I was able to find nearby street parking pretty easily. Last thing I will say (cos I'm just going on and on about how much I love this spot) is they have off-menu items! Do with that what you will :)

Been visiting this location and heights location for years and I can say one thing... Handies is my favorite hand roll bar. Like ever. Anywhere. They're always quick and efficient. I can get in and out under an hour without feeling rushed. Food is also consistent. Love!

Fantastic and delish! Fun handroll place in Montrose. Handies Douzo is a popular place in my friend group. It was my first time at this one. They had great service. We were able to snag a 5:00p reservation day of on a Friday. We ordered the 4 and 5 piece handrolls as the 5 piece has shellfish in it but the 4 did not. We also ordered two extra dishes. This was able to fill us up. Everything was delicious. The spicy crab and the avocado hand rolls were my favorites. Our drinks were also really good. All in all, worth the money spent. Definitely would go again!

This place is such a vibe in the evening. Love the duck theme which gives such a cool/hip ambiance to the place. Seating is surrounded by the chefs making the sushi/handrolls. I love the culture the workers have here, they look like they're having so much fun, and also they don't hesitate to converse with the customers! I ofc got the 5 hand roll set which made a great introduction to the place, including their Saketoro Carpaccio Crudo. 5 hand roll set: BGB Sake - 10/10 Negitoro - 8/10 a tad bit too salty but still good! Kani- 9/10 Spicy tuna 10/10 Avocado 7.5/10 Saketoro Carpaccio - 10/10! SO good. I also got a taste of the hamachi hand roll from my partner and it was 10/10 I'll definitely get that next time. Honestly pretty solid place, love the intimacy. I especially love the seaweed wrapper they use here. It gave such a great crunch. Yum!!

Upon arrival, I was told that I could not sit at the sushi bar and eat. If I wanted to order I had to go sit in the common area of this dining hall. After this discussion, I said fine and asked for a menu. They then told me I had to get up and order at the register and view the menu glued to the counter. They took the order of a couple who sat down maybe 2 minutes before me in front of me. I will never come back to this place. They seem to be the last man standing in this dining hall, and with this kind of customer service, they won't last much longer. It's a shame because I love the food and I am a regular at handies and aiko as well. Won't be back to any of them.

GENERALIZED REVIEW:…read more Came here with a friend from theatre after a full run--he had this place recommended to him by another theatre friend, so we're just passing on the word. The plaza was a bit confusing to navigate, and I'm pretty sure if the place weren't full of Asian parents and their kids, it would've felt like the shadiest place ever because you have to enter from the back. Otherwise, the plaza had a lot of great-looking stores overall. My first go-to: I've loved drinking Kirin Light ever since I discovered it in Chicago. The flavor is literally so light, with a slight acidity that brightens up my meal. The sake here was frankly also delicious. I didn't order it, but my friend did, and they had it warmed. The flavor was soothing and subtle, almost like tea. It was exceptionally easy to drink, and the ocean-themed ceramicware was a beautiful touch. We ordered two rolls: the Shaggy Dog and the Truffalufagus (a fun tongue-twister). I personally chose the Truffalufagus (which is not fun to spell) because it seemed like the most unique dish on the menu, and I enjoyed it very much. What I liked most about it was that it was subtle yet impactful. I also loved the textures--from the internal crunch paired with the fresh jalapeño to the softness of the fish. I'm glad I gave this roll a shot, and I would be excited to try it again anytime. The Shaggy Dog was great, but it appealed less to my flavor profile. It was a little too rich and creamy for me. I recommended this place to my BF as a potential future date spot--I personally think he would like it... if he weren't the type to enjoy AYCE sushi so much. If they had more unique rolls, I would definitely come back just for those. I was tempted to order the Surf and Turf for this round, but I didn't want to seem like a glutton, hahaha.

The Chawanmushi was decent but it was a little different than I expected. It had a little bit more liquid at the top of the egg custard. The flavor was fine nothing overpowered and it was soft and had that gelatin mush to it. The carbonara udon pasta was creamy and tasted exactly how I imagined it would which was smooth and creamy with a little crispiness from the pieces of bacon. Just make sure you mix the egg into the pasta to give it that rich creaminess. The only dish I would say that was underwhelming was the crispy rice. I guess my expectation would be a little less rice and a balance of the crispy rice around it. It reminded me more so of a thick fried outer crust. However, I did like the fish and meat they used on top of the crispy rice. They all had their own flavors. The Handroll tasting is probably the most interesting dish I ordered. It seemed to have a good portion of fish and they try to keep the seaweed nice and crispy by leaving the plastic film over the seaweed. The flavors of the Handrolls were subtle. They did make a nice presentation. The salmon flight was pretty good you definitely could tell from the different cuts and fattiness of the salmon. My favorite was the aburi cheese the scorched cream cheese gave the salmon a melted coating of cheese and made it silky and smooth. The nigiri platter was almost like a flight of nigiri. In the order I ate them they got progressively better. My favorite was the scallop and tuna. The only roll I tried was the royal chutoro. The portion was a good ratio of rice to fish and the tobiko gave it a slight crunch. as service and parking. The parking costs $10 and it's only Valet. If you decide to park on the curb somewhere you will get a parking ticket (I saw a guy placing tickets on cars). The atmosphere was upscale and you can tell they try to emulate Japan with the decor(zen inspired). Overall, the fish was tasted fresh and the vibes were there. However, I do think everything was a bit overpriced compared to competitors.
