We were under the impression this was a classy place like Uchi. We got there and they sat us next to this rowdy table. They did move to the back which was a little quieter, but the server was very inattentive. It took 30 minutes to get drinks. We did an appetizer but took another 30 minutes to get to our first sushi dish. He said he would help us with the menu but never really gave us the attention. The food was mediocre. We could have gotten the same quality at another restaurant cheaper and with better service. Maybe our expectations were too high. We should have gone to Uchi. The fish in the chirashi bowl was fresh, and the sushi rice was seasoned well. Tonkotsu ramen broth was rich and creamy, and the ramen egg was perfect. My favorite dish was the Texas Kobe Beef Skewers. The beef was well marinated, and cooked to perfection. There is always room for dessert. The Nutella & Strawberry Kakigori was my choice, and it was definitely a must-get. Do make reservation if you can't be there during their opening time or peak hours. Came here with my husband for our anniversary dinner. It was definitely full, but we came on a Saturday so it was expected. The lighting is nice and music is at a perfect level where I could vibe with without having to overcompensate the conversation. We didn't make a reservation, but were able to get a seat very quickly at the bar. Tran was amazing and helped me pick the perfect pieces of sushi. Most of the dishes were more than enough for 2 people. - East Coast Oysters with Uni: fresh, high quality uni - Hamachi & Jalapeno Sashimi: quite tasty and spicy - Kata's Fresh Catch Mixed Ceviche: flavorful with different textures - Japanese Amberjack Sashimi with Foie Gras: chewy amberjack and fatty foie gras go well together, surprisingly - Texas Wagyu Katsu Sando: tasty and quite fatty, sauce was a little too salty for me - Soft Shell Crab Wrap with Singaporian Chili Sauce: the best dish of the meal. Packed flavors, rich, and spicy - Miso Lobster Mac & Cheese: the second best dish of the meal. The waitress friendly and informative on the menu, but the service was a little slower than I expected for a Sunday evening. Seems like she was the only waitress for the back area. Shrimp tempura (6/5) by far the best I ever had Lobster Mac and cheese (2.5/5) not cheeses or creamy and just nothing special Omakase (3.5/5) a little underwhelming not sure bc I had high expectations due to Kata always had such a hype. It was split into two part, which I perfect each dish serve by itself, bc when it's all in one setting you tend to eat faster and not able to savory the moment. I finally went for my birthday, dinner with my wife, and decided to try things I'd never had before. I started adventurous: oysters topped with uni (sea urchin) and geoduck sashimi. Honestly, I was nervous I didn't know what to expect. I'd seen plenty of videos and read descriptions, but tasting them for myself was a revelation. The oyster with uni was surprisingly sweet, velvety, and perfectly balanced with a champagne-shallot vinaigrette. The geoduck was crunchy in a way I can only compare to tender coconut or lychee, slightly sweet, very delicate, and I barely needed soy to enjoy its flavor. Truly fun and unexpected. Lobster ramen: its 25$ but has tiny meats and noodles were all cooked together like a chunk of bread. 2. I ordered wagyu meat sushi and it had a big chunk that I could not chew down. Lucked out and got a 6:30pm Friday night reservation a couple of hours prior. It was definitely very busy which is a testament to the food The menu is a decent size with a good variety of Japanese food. The drink menu also has plenty of choices of cocktails, wines, and spirits. To drink, I had the peach lychee martini and it was great. Well made, balanced, and not too sweet. For food we had several nigiri (salmon, chutoro, unagi, hamachi, spicy chopped scallop) and all of them were very good with large pieces of fish. My favorite was the spicy chopped scallop, so good! My friend and I ordered 2 sushi combos to shared amongst each other & it comes with miso soup as well. I also got the Kobe beef skewer & Katsu don. Let's start with the miso soup. It was decent, it came out warm and not hot but I can look past it. Good amount of tofu & wakame. The broth itself was a little salty but had a lot of flavor. The Kobe beef skewer was delicious, it was like butter; just melts in your mouth. It was tendered, fatty but not over the top & seasoned to perfection; Pink on the inside which was spot on. It was on the expensive side ($22) but worth every penny. This was by far one of the best quality beefs I've ever had. * Tuna nigiri- smelled a little fishy and wasn't that fresh. 2/5 * salmon nigiri- it was smooth and just melts in your mouth. 4.5/5 * unagi nigiri- fair. 2.5/5 * spicy tuna roll- good. 3.5/5 * California roll- simple. 2.5/5 * Crazy roll- very good. 4/5 * Spider roll- generous amount of crab meat. 4/5 My Katsu don was underwhelming and such an uninspiring dish. The cutlet was fried but had no crispness to it & tasted bland. I'm glad it was only 12 bucks because it was not good at all. Overall, it was a good experience. They also have a patio and sushi bar in case you don't want to sit at a table. The decor is beautiful and well put together. Will I come back? Their sake list is also excellent. Can't remember the name, but on our last visit we ordered the sake with the gold flakes and it was unbelievably smooth and paired perfectly with our meal. After several years away, I was thrilled to find some of my favorite items still on the menu, and I even dared to try a few seasonal items to compensate for the items gone. We came to Kata Robata to celebrate our anniversary, and it was everything we hoped for and more. This has been our favorite sushi restaurant in Houston for a while now, and once again, it blew us away. We came in at 5:15pm and were immediately seated with reservations and overheard a family of 3 walk in and also be seated. What made this visit especially memorable was our server, Kiet. He was fantastic... super friendly, really knew the menu inside and out, and made thoughtful recommendations that made our dinner feel extra curated and personal. His timing and attention were perfect throughout the night, and you could tell he genuinely cared about our experience. We'll definitely be asking for him again in the future. I've added some photos of the dishes we enjoyed: the seasonal crudo (I forgot the exact name, but it was phenomenal), beef carpaccio, the wagyu sando, and the blueberry cake with ice cream. Went for lunch with family and had a fantastic experience. The restaurant is busy but it was easy to get a same day reservation. It was well-lit with rustic decor. We ordered a variety of things including the wagyu katsu sando, hamachi and jalapeño sashimi, the chicken skewers three ways, the pork belly and papaya salad, and the chef's sushi platter. We wrapped up with the tropical kakigori. Everything was amazing- the fish was fresh and tender, the wagyu sando a lovely classic bite (although a bit small), the chicken skewers juicy and tender with great flavors. The pork belly and papaya salad was an unexpected surprise, mixing a leaner cut of pork belly with fresh salad and dressing that worked really well, having a good umami flavor with a more sour and sweet salad. I probably wouldn't have gotten the kakigori again because even though the ice is imported directly from Japan, I am not fancy enough to tell the difference in ice and felt like the syrup was minimal. It didn't really have any fruit besides the syrups, although the yuzu cream was a really nice addition. Overall, this place is worth it. It's expensive for sure, but they have a lot of great options with a good mix of classic and non traditional items. Will definitely need to be back! read more

The regular menu prices are a bit on the high side, so unless you're celebrating a special occasion, I recommend taking advantage of their weekday lunch specials. We visited to celebrate a birthday! We made a reservation for when they opened at 12:00 PM and were promptly seated. All the food came out quickly. My favorite dish was the beef skewers; they were so delicious and tender that I didn't even have a chance to snap a photo before we devoured them. The foie gras and duck soba was also yummy, though a bit on the saltier side; the duck was particularly flavorful. The sando was tasty, but I'd choose the beef skewers over it any day. The octopus was good but not particularly memorable. The chef's sashimi plate was incredibly fresh, and everything on it was delightful. They even offered to fry the shrimp heads for us to enjoy! I tried a few new things: -Raw shrimp, which I found too slimy for my taste. -Fried shrimp heads--who knew you could eat those? I had a bite, and it was interesting! -Jalapeño on sushi, which was a bit too spicy for me, but it was fun to try, and the others enjoyed it. Was able to try a bit of the birthday girl's free dessert - opted for the blueberry cake. I appreciated that the the cake and the scoop of ice cream beside it were not overly sweet. We also ordered a mango ice to share. The ice was nice and fluffy/soft. I wish there were actual big chunks/cubes of mango. It was more ice and cream than it was mango. They did not overdue the sauces, like Uchi, who ruined a few dishes by putting too many unnecessary toppings which masked the flavor of the fish. The fish at Kata Robata was so fresh, did not need adornment, were larger servings, and the cost was slightly less. Cocktails were better as well. Loved my cucumber sakatini! I really slipped on this review as I didn't take any pics and he ordered and I wasn't paying too much attention so I'll do the best I can. We started with the Texas Kobe Beef Skewer. Double OMG. I've never hard anything like this before. Meat was melt in your mouth tender. Then we had Kobe Beef sliders. Again -OMG good. Then we got rolls - 3 of them. Lots of food. As far as ambiance though, there's nothing that particularly stands out to me Sushi: Their indivual nigiri are fine, but not overly noteworthy. Each time I come here I expect it to be a bit better but it's not bad. The seaweed salad is unique but not what I expected when I ordered it . I wouldn't opt for it again but it was interesting. Kata Robata made me fall in love with sushi. Before I dined, I didn't really like sushi but kata's fresh, high quality, and delicious sushi changed that real quick. All the waiters are knowledgeable with their suggestions. All of their sushi is so so so good. My favorites outside of the sushi are the katsu sando (super rich and filling) and the ramen. I've been before and enjoyed the food, but it was the lunch menu that really knocked it out of the park for me. The Bento Box was so much food, and all of it was delicious. I did the wagyu beef with chicken karaage, agedashi tofu, seaweed salad, and rice. I kept thinking each part was the best until I tried the next portion.
