Birthday lunch today and they gave us a great table. It's loud here. Casual ambiance. Pluses 1. Bento boxes are great we liked the fish and beef ones - we also upgraded to the crab roll instead of the chicken teriyaki 2. Eel roll is good 3. Seaweed salad had many types Areas to improve 1. Ladies bathroom door is very heavy 2. We got the birthday acknowledgment today but we didn't get anything. Usually most places give the birthday person something. Good place to eat, $106 with tax and tip for two, no alcohol. Highly recommended!
A great spot for sushi! I enjoy Kata Robata whether I'm stopping in for lunch or going for dinner. Their sushi is always delicious, and it's a place I know I can count on for a great meal.
First time here for a friend's birthday. They had reservations for a private big table in the back for 10 people. We had 1 waiter and a few runners. The place was very busy but service was great! Quick and thorough. I had several sake bombs but that didn't cloud my judgement! The food was amazing here. Definitely worth the slightly higher price than your average sushi place. There isn't a bad choice on the menu. We will be back for their lunch specials as they have event better pricing and dishes you can only get then.
FOOD POISONING I hate to give Kata a bad review because I actually enjoy eating here. However, I currently have food poisoning after eating here yesterday. 30 minutes after coming back from lunch break, I had diarrhea. I thought maybe it was just a bad day, but I am still suffering from this. I have to use the toilet many times a day, and I feel so nauseous. If it keeps getting worse, I am might have to consider going to urgent care. My boss ordered a salad that had the same veggies that came with the pan seared duck breast about a week ago, and also had diarrhea. He pieced two and two together. We believe that it's the veggies. I am worried that what I have is the parasite that's going around right now, cyclosporiasis. On another note, I wanted to try their specials. The lamb gyozas were okay. I didn't really like the skin of the gyoza, seemed a bit oily. I was excited to try the pan seared duck breast, but I found it to be a bit overcooked than what I usually have at other restaurants. A bit dry, kinda chewy, but the blueberry sauce was good. The salad that came on the side was good, but I believe that's what gave me diarrhea.
Kata Robata used to be one of my favorite restaurants before I moved away from Houston. After recently moving back, I chose it for my birthday lunch with friend because I had such fond memories of dining there. Unfortunately, this visit was disappointing. I arrived about 20 minutes before opening and had to wait outside in Houston's summer heat 93'F. While there are a few benches, there is very little shade, and guests are not allowed to wait inside. When the restaurant opened, there was no clear system for seating guests. Even though I was first in line, several people rushed in ahead of me, making the process feel disorganized. The biggest issue involved a $300 gift card that my friend had received years ago. She simply asked the staff to check the balance. When the server returned, he told us the manager had cut the card in half and that the entire balance had to be used during that visit. What bothered me was the lack of communication. We were never informed of the policy before the card was invalidated. If that is the restaurant's policy, it should be explained clearly beforehand. As two ladies having lunch, spending $300 was difficult, so we ended up ordering far more food than we normally would. The sashimi was fresh but cut thinly than what I've had at comparable restaurants. The hamachi kama, chirashi, and lobster mac and cheese were good. The green tea soufflé cheesecake was the biggest disappointment. For $10, it consisted of three very small cubes and felt overpriced. The waitstaff were attentive, friendly and professional, which helped salvage the experience. However, between the uncomfortable wait outside, the chaotic seating process, and the poor handling of the gift card, this visit did not live up to my previous experiences. While I have many good memories of Kata Robata, I'm not sure I'll be returning anytime soon.
Had a fantastic evening at Kata Robata! Our server, Gabby, was excellent and attentive throughout the evening. My favorite was definitely the Kobe Beef Skewers - I could have just eaten those all night long! Deliciousness in every bite. I'm not a fan of raw fish, so while my family enjoyed a handful of crudo dishes and nigiri, I got to enjoy the Longhorn Roll. This roll was solid, nothing mindblowing. We all enjoyed the Spicy Miso Ramen! Rich, flavorful broth that rivals some of my top ramen spots. I forget exactly what dessert we ordered, it may have been their chocolate bread pudding, but it was so good that I was literally scraping the plate! There's a lot of menu options so I'd love to come back and try some more things
Finally made it out here for dinner. The ambiance feels much nicer inside than you would expect from the outside. Our waitress made so many great recommendations. The crudo and skewers were the group favorites.
My family had dinner here last weekend. We had an early dinner so parking was plentiful. The interior is clean but non-descript. The service was very good. I was a bit disappointed with the food given the reviews I had read, especially given that the sushi pricing is very expensive. I would give the food an overall 3.5/5 stars. We had: Octopus Crudo (3/5) - It's thinly sliced octopus from a large tentacle so pretty large circular discs. The "issue" is that the citrus flavors are so overpowering you can't tell at all that you're eating octopus. I will say the flavors weren't bad, just overpowering for the octopus. Ceviche - My daughter ordered this and said it was very good; I did not try. Sushi Sampler (10 pieces / $58) as well as a few add-ons including chu-toro, o-toro and ikura - (3.5/5) - Overall the sushi was okay to pretty good. Nothing outstanding imo. I thought the rice lacked flavor, was textually pretty hard. The fish was pretty good. Spicy Soy Ramen (4/5) - Probably the best dish of the night. Not my favorite ramen in Houston but this was a good dish. Overall, again a bit disappointed given the price point but if you put price aside, okay to pretty good food.
Me and a friend stopped by for a quick lunch. Immediately upon being seated, we were greeted by Tai our server. He was very welcoming and assertive. Throughout our interactions he was very vocal about his opinions of the menu and suggestions but could be heard having some disagreements with other tables and staff which was a bit concerning. Our food came out very quickly and was pretty good, but nothing to write home about. I have heard since visiting they are more known for other dishes besides sushi so will definitely try these next time.
Nut allergy friendly - The lunch ramen is still safe! As is most of the menu I believe. Parking: Actually quite difficult in the small strip mall lot. Gets very busy during lunch and you might have to wait for someone to come out. Yep, they're all here for Kata. Time to Entree: 7 Minutes We arrived at 1PM on a Friday afternoon without a reservation and got quoted a 20 minute wait for 2 people. That ended up being around 9 minutes wait. Service for the lunch tonkatsu ramen was quick and efficient. The ramen is just as great as I remember. The pork tonkatsu is flame seared and has an excellent charred flavor, very different than normal tonkatsu pork but still melts in your mouth. The broth is flavorful and ginger-forward, but not too salty to where it's overpowering. Great portions of noodles that makes for a satisfying lunch. Kata's ramen still bats for the top 5 in Houston in my book. Always happy to make it back for their lunch when I've got the time.
Katsu sando - people seem to rave about this but we thought it was just okay. This seemed like similar sous vide style as the skewer but the skewer was much better Wagyu skewer - yum! Duck cold noodles - okay Scallop Foie nigiri - yes! So good and would order again
I've heard so many great things about Kata Robata and I'm glad we had an opportunity to check them out. An easy 10/10 experience! Went in during their lunch hours, upon entering I was greeted and informed that tables were being cleaned and prepared. I waited for all of 5 minutes before being seated. Soon after someone dropped off two waters for us. Shortly after that, Thao, our server stopped by to give an overview of the menu. Something she noted was that they were out of many things/food items. Specifically dishes containing lobster. We ordered the following: -Ocean Picante Roll -Miso Cod Bento -Longhorn Roll Honey I will be returning ANY chance I get! Any chance I take! That Longhorn Roll was something serious! Packed with flavor, fresh, and delicious. 20/10. Now as for the Ocean Picante Roll- I enjoyed it, but it wasn't my favorite. I'd give it an 8/10. That's a pretty high rating. Very good regardless. The Miso Cod Bento is served with seaweed salad, agedashi tofu, your choice of chicken teriyaki or chicken karaage, steamed rice, miso soup. And the food was fantastic!! Many people do not like tofu and guess what? I'm not many people. It's lightly fried to perfection! Kata Robata has an ambiance that makes you feel as if you're in an upscale space, yet not too stuffy or over the top. The lighting is perfect and it feels like a cozy meal with someone you love or like. Great for lunch, dinner, happy hour, or a nice date. I'll be returning very soon!
Nothing was super bad but I was also not impressed with the meal, especially given the higher end prices. The chili oil dumplings with the sauce in a pipette looks cool but is kinda gimmicky. Black pepper salmon nigiri was great as it should be. One of the rolls with the eel sauce on top (I forget the name) was too salty for my liking, which is a shame because I really like eel.

Never disappointed at Kata Robata! This place is a keeper while in Houston. As a world traveler and foodie I am particular about what I eat and the quality. Kata Robata always comes through for me. I mostly select from the daily specials or ask for server favorites. Today's special were the mussels.... I'm pleasantly pleased by the broth with special seasonings and not chewy. I'm full but I cannot stop eating these delicious mussels and the broth dipped in bread. Yum. read more

I've been here twice, and both experiences have been amazing!! Especially the second time around, because I came with a large party and was able to try a lot of the menu items -- ALL of which were super delicious. I was try: -Pork Belly & Papaya Salad -Vegan Soba Salad -Miso Eggplant with Grilled Rice -Hamachi Kama -Grilled Oyster Mushrooms -Texas Hamachi Roll -Sushi Platter -Green Tea Soufflé Cheesecake -Warm Blueberry Cake -Chocolate Bread Pudding -Tropical Kakigori My favorites were: -Texas Kobe Beef Skewers -Texas Wagyu Katsu Sando -Miso Marinated Black Cod -Rising Sun Roll -Seared Salmon Nigiri -Fake ID (lychee martini mocktail) To summarize: all of the dishes were incredible. The flavors were always on point and the fish was extremely fresh. The wagyu and kobe beef literally melted in my mouth, and normally it can be a little too fatty for me, but I felt that these were perfect. The Rising Sun Roll was infused with truffle oil, which was a surprising touch that you can definitely taste the freshness of. Also, I'm not sure if the seared salmon nigiri is on the menu, but we had asked, and they said they were able to make it for us -- it was soooo soft and delicious. I think my least favorite course of the night was the dessert, but everyone else at my table really enjoyed them! The green tea soufflé cheesecake was okay on its own but it paired deliciously with the red bean ice cream that it came with. Overall, the service was great and very well accommodated for a large party, and the ambiance of the place is also very beautiful. Came in for a late lunch. Space is large and tables were clean. Attire: chill Kobe beef skewers - this was very soft and (almost melting in your mouth) Lobster and crab ramen - lobster was okay. A solid sushi place but not particularly outstanding to me personally Parking: There's a lot of parking because they're in a shopping center but it's frequent full. There's handicap parking too Seating: It's a pretty big place and there's plenty of seating - booths and tables. As far as ambiance though, there's nothing that particularly stands out to me Sushi: Their indivual nigiri are fine, but not overly noteworthy. Each time I come here I expect it to be a bit better but it's not bad. The seaweed salad is unique but not what I expected when I ordered it . I wouldn't opt for it again but it was interesting. Had a great lunch at Kata Robata. Had a sashimi bento box and a combination of sushi rolls. I underestimated the amount of food! Sashimi was wonderful, fresh and perfect! The bento box included miso soup, and this was one of the better miso soups I've had. If you don't make lunch reservations, expect to sit at the sushi bar. Worked out well sitting at the sushi bar for lunch. This place is among the Mt Rushmore of the best Houston restaurants in my honest opinion. From everything with the high class service, the quality of the food, and then ambiance, it's something that's hard to top. One of my favorite bites I've ever had the pleasure of biting is the beef sando. Fantastic recommend that enough. Had the chef's omakase for 6 pieces and did not disappoint. Kata Robata made me fall in love with sushi. Before I dined, I didn't really like sushi but kata's fresh, high quality, and delicious sushi changed that real quick. All the waiters are knowledgeable with their suggestions. All of their sushi is so so so good. My favorites outside of the sushi are the katsu sando (super rich and filling) and the ramen. Can't sing enough praise about Kata! Plenty of parking in the plaza! read more
Great fresh high quality sushi! Arrival: we did not have reservation for lunch. We said we would sit at the sushi bar and we were able to be seated right away. I don't mind watching sushi masters make their creations. It is like lunch and a show! Food: ordered lunch bento box of black cod. The black cod was buttery and then soy sauce miso glaze was delicious compliment to enhance the delicate cod. The teriyaki chicken was tender and very flavorful. The fried silken tofu was gentle and crunchy, and perfect side. The sushi roll was well prepared too. I truly enjoyed my bento box. We also ordered the sushi lunch plate and wow that was delicious and flavorful too. read more

Enjoyed our dinner here tonight after a disappointing one at Uchi. They did not overdue the sauces, like Uchi, who ruined a few dishes by putting too many unnecessary toppings which masked the flavor of the fish. Who puts soy sauce and wasabi on uni topped with something resembling Doritos for example? Ugh! The fish at Kata Robata was so fresh, did not need adornment, were larger servings, and the cost was slightly less. Cocktails were better as well. Loved my cucumber sakatini! Much better destination for a true sushi/sashimi connoisseur. Try this restaurant after being advised to go to Uchi, which does have a fancier atmosphere and more servers, but their quality of sushi pales in comparison. read more
It was honestly just ok to me. I went because I heard about the lobster and crab ramen. It was very good and the seafood was very fresh, but could use some salt. The nigiri (titled sushi here) was mediocre. It was fresh, but I prefer mine dressed. At least some citrus or chive oil or something. This It's just the fish and rice. I suppose if you're a "purist" you might like it. But I've been too spoiled by other places I guess. Once you've tried it that way it's really hard to go back. read more

This is an incredibly beautiful restaurant. The decor and subsequent lighting makes you want to stay there and take your time. I met up with a friend at Kata Robata because of it's reputation and I will say this visit did not disappoint. The second I walked in I was greeted and promptly sat, even though I did not have a reservation. Started dinner with a few pieces of sashimi- I took the waiters advice and grabbed some hamachi with a quail egg (this turned out to be my favorite piece of sushi this entire night!), peppercorn tuna, and salmon. The presentation for all of this was gorgeous and the flavor was spot on. I realized that peppercorn was not my favorite style of tuna, but this was not on the restaurant- purely a matter of my own taste. For dinner I tried the Texas Hamachi roll. Honestly, I loved it and wished I got more. It was perfectly bright and balanced with a crunch (from the tempura) but it all worked together really well. While I didn't finish it, I ended the night by ordering the Spicy Soy Ramen. The broth was incredibly flavorful and I can't complain. 10/10 read more
Probably one of my favorite places in Houston to eat at every time I visit. Have been here a few times and have never been disappointed. They do take reservations, but the last two times I did walk-in and was once seated immediately and the other only about a 10-15min wait. I mostly stick to their heavy hitters and they absolutely do not disappoint. This most recent visit we got the following: - Rising Sun Roll: Pretty yummy roll. Enjoyed the truffle flavor. - Foie Gras & Duck Cold Soba Noodle: An absolute staple item. There is wasabi vinaigrette in it so it does offer a little kick. But really enjoy the richness of it. - Kakuni Pork Belly: Super rich pork belly with a great sauce. The egg could've been a bit more cooked, but otherwise worked well imo. - Texas Kobe Beef Skewer: Sous-vides do wonders and this is no exception. Super juicy beef cubes that melt in your mouth. - Green Tea Soufflé: Really light and yummy dessert to end the meal on since the items I usually get are fairly heavy. Have also gotten the lobster mac and cheese and that's also great albeit heavily. Kata Robata is definitely one of those must-try spots in Houston if you're going to be there for more than a few days. Service is super friendly every time I've dined and I enjoy the wooden decor. A bit of a casual vibe, but it can be still a great date night or just casual dinner with family. Would totally recommend. read more

Still one of our favorite spots even though we no longer live in Houston. We recently visited family in Houston for the holidays and of course we had to dine at Kata Robata. Everything is just as delicious as we remember, if not better. This place is always such a treat and we have never experienced bad customer service here. The ambience is just as chill as ever and we enjoyed a nice lunch in the sun room on a nice warm sunny day. Can't wait to be back again! read more

Last night we had "Date Night" and chose Kata Robata on Kirby - perfect spot. The food is high-end, service is amazingly focused and ambiance is perfect. If you like GOOD sushi, this is a solid choice. Sushi Platter... it was delicious. read more

So I have to say I really enjoy the food but the service today was Horrible. I called in for two lobster Mac and cheese because like I stated earlier their food is really good. I'm driving for my lunch break and I called into the location to pick up two lobster the receptionist stated "put your order in online" and mind you I'm driving to the location so my food wait would be shorter. I asked do you take orders over the phone. She stated "have a good day" and hung up on me. So now I have to go into the location and order because my friends want this meal and I would prefer to go somewhere else ; I get in to the location and put in the order to go and they are staring at me uncomfortably because they just spoke to me and didn't even acknowledge the conversation that was had. So I made up my mind NO MATTER what; I will Never go or recommend this place to anyone again EVER. read more

Food (5/5): - The food was quite tasty and there wasn't a single meal that was a miss. - If I really had to choose one "skip" meal, it would be the seaweed salad just because it was hard to share between our party of 4. Also, while it was cool to try different types of seaweed, I don't think it was worth the price because it didn't do much for our appetite. With that said, it was still delicious, and we all liked the sesame vinaigrette that it came with. - Our table really enjoyed the longhorn, ceviche, Kobe beef skewers, and the Nagasaki ramen. - Note that all the portions here are quite small as it's meant to be tapas style. Expect to order quite a bit. The only thing that I found to be reasonably sized was the Nagasaki ramen if one person ordered it for themselves. (To be fair, the ramen is quite tasty) Service (5/5): - Friendly service. Answered all my questions and was quick to put in our order. - Meals were a little spaced out more than I'd like but not a huge complaint Ambiance (5/5): - Intimate, slightly upscale setting but not too snobbish - Great for celebrations, dates, etc. read more
A lot of my friends call Kata Robata the best sushi around. That was not my experience, unfortunately. To be fair, I am not a fan of expensive sushi. I make the occasional exception for date nights. The dishes we tried were okay, but didn't blow me away. After a very long wait, we asked our waiter for his recommendations after our first two dishes didnt impress(not mentioned of course) and he really didn't give us anything spectacular to convince us to keep spending money...so we left and picked up tacos on the way home. I do believe we tried the wrong dishes for our tastes, so hopefully when I hear my friends talking about it I hear about a dish that will bring me back! read more
We love Kata and I'm surprised I haven't written a review for them, lol. We made reservations here for a Saturday lunch time. Were easily seated and greeted! What we ordered: Nagasaki Chanpon Ramen: 4/5, it was okay, not the best ramen we've had but not bad Texas Wagyu Katsu Sando: 10/10, the best, I would order a million if I were rich, lol. Heritage Pork Miso Gyoza: 4/5, pretty good and a little different than your typical gyoza Miso Lobster Macaroni & Cheese, 4.5/5, pretty creamy and plenty of lobster, came out super hot and delish (plenty of food too) Chocolate Bread Pudding, 5/5, super delish and worth it! My husband also go sashimi and it didn't melt in his mouth like he'd prefer, but it was okay! *They had a special which was meatballs, and it was SO good and worth it. You dipped it in egg yolk and it's chefs kiss for sure! Definitely try it out, pricey but worth it! read more
Came with a girlfriend on Friday night with a 6:30 reservation. Upon arrival they tried to seat us on the patio which I wasn't thrilled about but when asked they were able to put us inside. Our waiter took our drink order and then came back for our food order. He was perfectly nice but seemed impatient to place our order and at one point when I was trying to decide between two dishes he just left the table and didn't come back until everything else we had ordered had already come out. The service was incredibly rushed and it felt like they were just trying to flip the table as quickly as possible. With regard to the food, I thought the hamachi lacked spice and I wish they didn't de-seed the jalapeños. Vegan soba salad and the dumplings were fine. People absolutely rave about kata and I do think it's good, but not great. read more

Kata has been one of the favorite Japanese restaurant to go to. The fish is extremely fresh and taste and presentation has been flawlessly mastered by Hori Son. Service has always been top notch and executed every time. Definitely a staple in the Houston restaurant community. read more
The food was amazing. We got the chirashi bowl on the lunch special. The sushi cuts were fresh and thickly cut. The rice was plentiful and I would say you could also share a bowl with someone. We got a free dessert from one of the chef's and were very grateful. The matcha and red bean mix was surprisingly delicious. We went during lunch and it was pretty busy - would recommend making a reservation ahead of time. read more

Are the owners japanese?
The head chef, and several of the assistant chefs, are Japanese. However, the majority of the restaurant is owned by the Chinese family behind the Azuma restaurants.
Does anyone have any details on their omakase? Price? Do I need to specify that's what we would like to order in the reservation upfront?
I don't know the price but the point of the omakase is that it's a chef's tasting that they choose for you based on the current ingredients etc. Generally they will ask if there are any allergies or other exceptions but otherwise they curate the…

They offer the full menu at lunch as well. We ordered off the full menu last week during lunch.
