Came for the crab rangoon burrito and was a bit disappointed. While it was made fresh, it was extremely greasy and the crab to cream cheese filling ratio was off. It kinda tastes like eating fried cream cheese. Especially if you don't dip in the sauce it just tastes very flavorless. Overall, I may revisit for a signature bao bun but the crab rangoon burrito was not it for me.

I was told they sell a lot of it around 1 PM. The inside of the crab Rangoon was just OK. Overall good experience I would come back.

I think the concept is cool to try different bao flavors, but I think because this restaurant only focuses on bao, their prices need to be higher to continue business. At $15 for two baos, the Bulgogi and duck baos tasted average (bulgogi on the saltier side). They were also hard to pick up and eat because of how oily the outside of the baos were. I wish they came with those corner pocket pouches to make it easier to eat and hold like how the restaurants in nyc do it.

I was satisfied, but not super impressed. I tried the bulgogi and pork katsu bao's, and fat fries. The fries were probably my fave because they used skinny fries. Surprisingly I liked the fried pork on the pork Katsu, but it was cooked a little hard. The Bulgogi boa was a little sweeter than I expected, but the meat was tender. It's a self service walk up order and take a seat. Very casual type chill place. I would go back and try something different.

Ordered the crab rangoon, and it was hot, steamy, and delicious! Loaded with cream cheese!

This place has a variety of baos if you're craving it. My friends and I got different kinds but I got the bulgogi and pepper tuna along with some curry fries. The baos are pretty good - slightly wish the bulgogi can be a little less salty and pepper tuna to be more flavorful. However, this place stills a good place to go for baos. The service is fast once you place the order at the cashier, and the place is decorated well.

Came here for a quick and casual weekend lunch. Its in a pretty empty strip mall so there's ample parking but also easy to miss as the strip mall as a whole almost seems abandoned. You order at the cashier and you can either take food to go or eat in with a seat yourself kind of deal. The staff were all friendly and helped explain the menu (as I missed the menu on the counter that had details of what the items consisted of). We ordered the yummy fries (rosemary parmesan sauce), memphis (pork belly with asian slaw), panko tuna, and crab daddy (soft shell crab). I think food was pretty fairly priced considering the amount of filling in the baos and shareable size of the fries. I really enjoyed the shoestring fries and thought they were nice and crisp and held up to the heavier sauce. The bao were also good and I personally liked the Memphis the best. I was let down by the crab daddy as it didn't have much flavor, even though its a whole soft shell crab. I'd come back for more fries as I'm a fry fiend but also curious about a lot of their other bao varieties. I do wish they had some lunch specials or something as prices can add up fast esp since a meal is probably 2-3 baos so can become a 10-20 meal pretty fast but also inflation so maybe that's normal now.

The beef bulgogi bao is phenomenal and reasonably priced. The duck is good but not amazing and a little pricey. The fried byrd is fun and different but a little heavy. Fat Bao is one of Houston's most uniquely establishments. Located in upper Kirby, they specialize in a large variety of Bao buns. My favorite is their crab daddy, their most popular bun. It's a big soft shell crab with some spicy mayo and Asian slaw. The soft shell crab is really big and has a perfect crunch to it. You can actually taste the crab flavor from the innards. The spicy mayo has a tiny kick to it and provides some creaminess, pairing really well with the crunch from the Asian slaw. I would come for this bun alone. I also got the bulgogi bun which is made with marinated beef ribeye, kimchi, and green onions. The beef was tender and had a sweetness to it. The kimchi was kind of bunched in one area so I basically ate ate it in one bite. This bun was a lot more greasier too. If I come back here, which I definitely am, I'll for sure get the crab daddy and maybe try another item

This was not the first visit to Fat Bao, but it had been a long while. My purpose was to get the viral crab Rangoon burrito, which found traction from a IG foodie account. I was literally the second person in line, and also ordered the soft shell crab and peppered tuna baos. It was just as I remembered. Quality small bites. The burrito was 15.00, and was a little too much to eat at one time. I ate about a quarter at a time, spread out through the next few meals. The restaurant is a few communal tables, mixed with some small tables for 2-4 people. I'll be back. read more

Fat Bao has been on my list forever because of the freaking crab rangoon burrito. It looks divine. We stopped by for a quick girl dinner, and unfortunately they were out. I think you have to go earlier in the day because they only make a limited number. I ordered the pork katsu bao and the honey walnut bao, and both were great. Honestly, these aren't your typical baos, but they're fun, creative, and really tasty. The pork katsu featured a thick piece of crispy fried pork that paired well with the thinly sliced avocado. The honey walnut shrimp bao was MESSYYYY, but packed with flavor- a cute sweetness on top of a fried shrimp patty. I will definitely need three baos next time, though, because two did not fill ya girl up. It's a counter-service restaurant with quick service, plenty of parking, and an easy spot for a casual meal. Now I just need to go back and get my hands on that crab rangoon burrito. read more

This review is based on the viral crab rangoon burrito, which is a limited-time item. I'll update my review if I try anything else from their regular menu. The crab rangoon burrito didn't really taste like crab rangoon. It was extremely creamy and heavily filled with cream cheese almost to the point of being overwhelming. After a few bites, it started to feel a bit sickening, and I don't think I could finish more than one slice. It was missing that traditional savory, umami flavor, and instead tasted only like cream cheese. The outer layer also didn't hold up well. It wasn't strong or crispy enough to support the filling, so everything felt soft and fell apart. It honestly made it difficult to eat without a spoon (which they did include). It was also overpriced at $16. The service was good and the ambiance was pretty standard. read more

Baos are TOOO GOOD. If you're going to pick a bao, pick the Crab Daddy or New Yorker. Trust me on this. The pricing is affordable, and because of that, I usually order 3-4 baos at once. Every time I eat a bao here, it's honestly so satiable. I haven't tried anything new because I can't get past the baos, lol! This place is absolutely one of a kind when it comes to the baos specifically. They don't just have savory baos, they also have sweet ones like banana/nutella filled. read more

DO NOT COME HERE!!! the crab ragoon burrito was HORRIBLE to say the least and that's doing it justice. The amount of oil and grease left my fingers GLISTENING. the presentation was horrid and the filling tasted like sad dreams and despair. If you want a whitewashed crab ragoon come to this place. Cream cheese is the only thing you taste. and not only that the staff is rude and condescending. This place never disappoints. I've been going here for years and am always happy when I leave. From quick service to consistently delicious meals, Fat Bao comes through. There's plenty of seating and nice high tables with stools that I like. My go-to is the spicy Thai bao with the fat fries. There's something magical in the sauce on the spicy Thai. The chicken is so succulent and pairs so well with the soft bao. The fries also tows the line between western and eastern flavors perfectly. popular spot for quick baos. a variety of tasty options. crab daddy, pork belly, yummy bird, bulgogi and duck are my typical. service is inconsistent. semi friendly staff take your order, multitask between food app orders and sometimes acknowledge your presence. i'd prefer ordering on a tablet and remove any expectation of interaction. the line moves fast and the food comes out quickly. their house habanero sauce is awesome to kick up the heat above sriracha. speaking of which why are there sriracha bottles on each table but only four ketchup bottles in the whole restaurant?! there's decent amount of seating at the community tables and there's a big lot for parking. read more

Haven't been to a Fat Bao since their Sugar Land location. I've been wanting to go back bc I love the fluffy white bao buns, same baos are they use for Peking duck. My boyfriend and I shared 4 baos (Memphis, duck, crab daddy and panko fish) and onion rings. All the baos were delicious and they do not skimp out on the proteins. Onion rings were delicious but I wish they gave more dipping sauce. Plenty of parking available and the restaurant was clean and tidy. read more

I tried the viral crab Rangoon burritos and I'm so sad that they didn't live up to the hype. I went once and they were sold out, but I went again and got to try them. I've definitely had wayyy better crab Rangoons, and unfortunately these were just super greasy. The sauce tasted more like a sweet chili sauce which I guess I'm not used to having with crab Rangoons. The actual Rangoon burrito itself just tasted like cream cheese and was very hard to eat. I appreciate the experience but unfortunately it just wasn't as good as people made it seem. read more

I've been to this location and the Sugar Land location in the past and had good experiences, but their current staff needs better training. I came in today with my son, and the place smelled like it had a plumbing/sewer issue. Things happen, so I still went to the counter. The worker just said "Yes" with no other greeting. I looked at the menu for a few seconds and asked "Do you have ramen?" since I've had it before but didn't see it on the menu. He immediately replied "No we don't" with no further explanation. My friends and I came here for dinner and had a bunch of baos. We also had some fries and fried avocado. The fried avocado and the fat fries were really good. I would pass on the Parmesan fries. They were kind of soggy. New York raw salmon and they tell you that when you order it it's kind of confusing that in the description it's smoked salmon so keep that in mind. Three baos is enough for one person. We didn't wait long for the food. It is self serve so you order at the front, take a table, and get your own water/drinks like a regular fast food joint. The staff were nice. The food is good and the bao/bread is very fluffy. The place is clean and the tables were not sticky. Parking is free and out front. But the parking spots at the door is kind of on a hill. So we parked a row away. Theres also a few exit points in the lot if you want to avoid having to make weird u turns. I got the bulgogi and pork katsu bao. Total was $10.99 for the 2 baos. I ordered at the front and the guy was helpful in giving recommendations. It took about 8 minutes for my food to come out. Food was okay. The bulgogi flavor was good but the bao texture wasn't very fluffy and kind of dense. The pork katsu bao tasted better but not amazing. There's four longer / taller tables with bar stools that seat 6 and 4 regular tables. Fat Bao is located in a plaza with a large parking lot. Easy to park read more

Oh my word! This is some of the best food I've ever had in my life! That softshell crab sandwich is going to knock your socks off! I just could not stop eating it. I literally left and came back to get another one. The flavor on the sandwich is incredible. The customer service is splendid and the price points are wonderful. So this isn't my first visit but it's been at least 2 maybe 3 years. Everything pretty much seems the same. Prices didn't go up and it was clean and inviting. I was just needing a lite snack for to go while on break, so I didn't opt for baos. Instead I got one of my old favs the tuna tacos with avocado sauce. Let me tell you they did not skimp on the tuna and it was nice and spicy. However, if spice isn't your thing then the avocado sauce that comes with it cools it right on down. This place was legit! The buns were super flavorful and a good amount of food. The onion rings were okay, a little too greasy for me but a nice crunch. I loved the soft shell crab bun. Yum. Lightly fried with a nice crunch. Everyone was friendly and attentive. It's counter service so there aren't any servers. The restaurant was clean. I had to remind the staff to stock the bathroom with tp but they got on it as soon as I said something. Definitely going back! read more

I really loved the soft shell crab boa, and the duck boa was good, however, the other varieties that I tried with chicken or beef or pork did not taste as good. I have not tried the one with fish. I would recommend to anyone wanting to try the soft shell crab boa. read more

I've bookmarked this place for awhile now and finallyyyyy had the chance to try it. Definitely what bao bun dreams are made of. Let me get "the ugly" out of the way first. The reason why it didn't get 5 stars is because the employee assisting us was lacking enthusiasm and energy. It's fine, not all of us love what we do buttttttttt it didn't make me excited to order my food. In addition, the avocado chips recommendation was blah. I love avocados, but literally, it's just fried avocados. No real wow factor or stand-out seasoning on them. The good: Bulgogi Bao and Crab Daddy Bao. The Pork Belly Bao is okay. Mediocre. Perhaps the pork belly could have benefited from a touch more seasoning, to my taste buds at least. Overall, I enjoyed all the baos. The steamed bao bun itself is airy and not too dense. Interior is kept tidy and has large communal tables. I like the larger than life black board that serves as their ordering menu. I'll have to come back and try the other baos! read more

Never tried this place before and although I didn't have the best food experience I will be back to try a new item. I hit the pork katsu I was just not a fan of the hard crust. I pulled the meat out and it separated. Meat was a little dry. The service was good. I also went 30 min before closing and I like how the guy take took my order said I would be back when I told him it was my first time. The ambiance was good. read more

They also provide sugar and plum sauce as additional toppings which I thought was interesting but not my cup of tea. The duck soup was extremely flavorful and full bodied and went well with the duck. The noodles were also amazing with likely hand pulled noodles served with an abundance of tender beef and vegetables with a little Sichuan kick. I was intrigued by a strawberry chicken dish that I saw on the menu and I plan to try it the time. My diagnosis: hands down the best Peking duck in the greater Houston area!

About myself: I am labeled as a picky eater, i.e. I will suffer through a Dim Sum outing awaiting the cart containing the block of the corn bread to make its way to my table. However, I do believe that I welcome new experiences with an open mind. I know what I like, "whaddya" want from me?!? Enter Fat Bao. Right away I felt at home, so much I wanted to take my boots off and kick-up my feet like this was a sawdust joint! The environment is very modern(steel bar stools and cool chairs) without the feeling as if every last ounce of the latest trendy fashion magazine is being shoved down my throat. 5 out of 5 The ordering system is simple and pain free. Take a glance at the menu offerings, head to the cashier once making your decisions, and find a table of your choice. While we waited for our order to arrive, we managed to catch some of the FBS bowl games, thanks to the generous sized HDTV's along the walls. On to the food. We started with the fried avocados, this at first glance seemed like a simple dish, but the beauty of this creation is its simplicity. The taste made me question as to why I haven't thought of this before. For Pete's sake, I have had chicken fried bacon at the state fair back in '08. Trust me, order this! From there we moved onto the main attraction, the bao! On this visit I sampled the pork belly and soft shell crab bao. The pork was juicy and packed a lot of favor. The soft shell crab was probably my personal favorite. I'm not a seafood person(I once sat through a 2 hour lobster brunch in Santa Monica, CA dining on dinner rolls and tap water), but I was pleasantly surprised by the texture and flavors this bao offered. The fun stuff. They really did save the best part for last, with the ice cream sandwiches! I had the strawberry ice cream sandwich and the best way I can describe it is to call it, "a party in my mouth." The good kind of party, in my mouth, of course... This creation taste like a meeting between a funnel cake(something I love) and ice cream(who doesn't love ice cream). In the end, I left as a very satisfied "picky" eater. I am immensely pleased I choose to forego the tired and boring restaurants available these days and tried something unique with Fat Bao. read more

This place is SO overrated. I'm from CA & NY & so I expect really great food & the price to also match up. Decided to try this place with friends, cowokwrs & solo visits for a total of 5x Wanted to give this place a fair chance do did 3 take outs & 2 dine ins just in case it was a fluke on some of the orders & to also try as much as possible. All times the most underwhelming food & overpriced too in addition to how unimpressive the food is. Quality, substance & options are extremely minimal too which doesn't help. We & I tried all of their beef, chicken, tofu & fish baos. We did not try the duck, lox or honey walnut shrimp. But what we did try was so disappointing & blah. And for the Price! Absolutely ridiculous. All I can say is that their being in Houston & doing any good or great business is only because they are in Houston. If they were in CA or NY, they would have been out of business a long time ago. So subpar I don't recommend this place at all. read more

The restaurant is small, pretty, clean, and modern-looking. The customer service was excellent. I tried their Crab daddy, Memphis, and Bulgogi baos. Crab daddy - 4/5 Memphis - 5/5 Bulgogi - 2/5 The Crab daddy bao was light and fluffy with a slight crunch and was seasoned well. The Memphis was my favorite of the three. The pork belly was cooked to perfection, and the marinade is very good. I didn't like the Bulgogi because it was too salty and ordinary tasting. I highly recommend you try the Memphis and Crab daddy baos. This place deserves a 4 star rating for their food; however, I had to knock off a star because I do agree with the other reviewers that this place is way too overpriced for the amount of food you get. They either need to drop the price, or double up the size per bao. Until then, I will skip this place since it's too expensive for a fast food lunch place that just doesn't fill you up. read more

I have been here about six times now and it has become my go to place to eat when in the area. The menu consists of fusion items that are all well paired. its hard to get my 12 year old son to try new things and he is generally not very impressed, but when he ate here all I heard was mmmmmm with every bite of food he took. we way over ordered and took some food to go but he ate it in the car before it even got home. the prices are great, the amount of food you get is pleanty , the quality of the food is something special, and the service is really good and fast. there is an unusually large choice of exotic beverages as well. Bao chicka wah wah! This classic porn riff really sets the tone for the food porn that is Fat Bao. The bao is soft, thick squishy and delicious. I had the pork belly, beef, and fried chicken. All were very nice, but the pork belly was my favorite. The slaw really melded well with the fatty pork. The service was great. They had mistakenly charged me for two beef baos instead of one. I did not notice, but they did and they corrected my bill. They even brought out some free fried bao for dessert. A class act for sure! Its a good place to eat and people watch. I like it a lot. This place really takes me back to my hometown when I used to visit these restaurants with my mom. The peanut butter noodles are done perfectly, they are full of flavors and give the right amount of sauce so that it's not too dry or like a soup. The dumplings are fantastic, they have pork and chives in them and the sauces are great too. The other item I got was the fujian wonton soup, truly a stable back in my hometown and was really delicious, just add a little vinegar in the soup to bring out all the flavors. My first experience at this place was overall amazing. The food is absolutely delicious (I recommend the Memphis, Pepper Tuna and the Duck Bao) and was not what I expected, the music was top hits across eras, and Lou (the cashier) had the best service I've experienced from a cashier. He was extremely polite and accommodating with all my questions. The food surprised me as I am usually wary of new Asian foods because it is hit or miss with me but this easily became one of my favorite spots in Houston. I came here with a few friends last Friday night and it was busy, but not packed. I ordered the pork belly bao with slaw (Memphis I think?) and the tofu bao, as well as a Prairie Artisan Ales Pirate Bomb . I was really impressed and surprised to see Pirate Bomb here since it's hard to find in Texas, but apparently they sell a lot of beer here that's semi-rare in Houston. The tofu bao was decent but I wouldn't order it again. The Memphis was excellent. In the future I would try the blue crab bao, which looked incredible. I came here with a few friends last Friday night and it was busy, but not packed. I ordered the pork belly bao with slaw (Memphis I think?) and the tofu bao, as well as a Prairie Artisan Ales Pirate Bomb . I was really impressed and surprised to see Pirate Bomb here since it's hard to find in Texas, but apparently they sell a lot of beer here that's semi-rare in Houston. The tofu bao was decent but I wouldn't order it again. The Memphis was excellent. In the future I would try the blue crab bao, which looked incredible. I'll definitely be back for lunch sometime. read more

I recently finally made a long overdue visit to Fat Bao, and was definitely pleased! Everything I tried was delicious, but if you eat a lot, I recommend either coming here for snack or just preparing your wallet. Each bao averages to $4-5, so it adds up quickly. If you love avocado, it is difficult to say no to a bowl of giant wedges of fried fresh avocado, accompanied by a jalapeno dipping sauce. We are visiting in town and we had the bulgogi bao, the spicy thai bao, and the crab daddy bao along with fries, and fried avocado. Let's start appetizer. The fried avocado was good with the sauce, just seemed like a lot of avocado so we didn't finish that. All of the food was tasty, even the fries were very crispy. Loved it even as we put the habanero hot sauce on it. Very hot and delish. I would say this visit was a success and when in town again, would return. If you are looking for a different kind of tasty, definityly go for it! read more

I kept driving by this place wondering what a fat bao was. I didn't have a clue but my curiosity got the best of me so I went in to try it. I was impressed with the fact that the portions were small but inexpensive so you could try a few things without committing to one large item that you were unhappy with. I tried a the fish as well as the pork bao and liked both. The only reason I didn't give a five was that it was kind of small and cramped as it got busy but that's just me. I will return for take out for sure. read more

Fat bao was a very good restaurant! Their food was very good and the sauce in the yummy byrd is delicious!! I ordered the yummy Byrd and ice cream bao. Both were amazing!! The chicken was delicious and the bao bread is amazing!! Their dessert baos are awesome. The restaurant is pretty small, but it's still great. The food was out fast and the employees were very nice. The restaurant was clean and looked nice. The baos looked awesome and tasted great!! Everything was perfect!! read more

Fat Bao by far is now one of my favorite asian food places in Houston now. I tried the crab daddy Bao and it was the most amazing thing that you could ever put in your mouth. Next I had a little bird Bao and it was oh so good, "finger licking" good to be specific. Fat Bao has good efficient service, creative presentation, and they nice interior fit perfect for anyone who wants to take a load off and eat their food, overall you can't go wrong to eat at Fat Bou. read more

Fat Bao was absolutely fantastic! The ambiance was perfect, and it fit the type of the restaurant. I ordered the chicken Spring bao, and I loved it! It was so fresh and very tasty. The chicken and vegetables were perfectly cooked and served on cardboard plates. The service was alright, and they did not ask us how we liked our food. The facilities were decent, and I am definitely coming back to Fat Bao soon. I highly recommend this restaurant! read more

Fat Bao was the GOAT. The actual GOAT. Their food made me very excited. They had the most delicous grilled chicken bao and yummy chicken Bao. But the ACTUAL GOAT was the fat Smore Bao the most delicous dessert of all time. The taste was so delicous and the service was also very quick and efficient. I really really like Fat Bao! They prepare everything to order! My favor is their Crab Daddy Bao! The soft shell crab is crispy with a lightly spiced slaw! I salivate with every bite I take of this delicious Bao! HL really likes their tuna tacos! We also enjoy sharing the avocado chips, yummy onion rings and homemade potato chips too! Portions are generous too! You will enjoy this casual fun place with really good food! read more

Their fries with the beef bulgogi was tasty. I've had ramen at a few places and felt that there's was a little bland. I believe I saw the chefs cooking the ramen noodles in the soup base which I don't believe is the best idea. I had their Memphis bao, pork belly, and the soft-shell crab which were all pretty good. Wasn't wowed with my overall experience but would still go back. I Wish fat bao further success in the future read more

This Resturant is amazing i came in here Just for quick bite to eat.But what i got was a new place to eat at the staff was very friendly and was very prompt with my order. which is hard to find in some places in the resturant industry.But not this place it really is good i really like the food here i could eat here everyday if i wanted to i will definately be recommending this place to my friends and family. read more

Was running some errands on a week night and decided to grab a quick soup and salad from this place without expecting too much, little did I know that the food is going to be nothing less than great. The wild mushroom soup just perfect and I am already craving some while writing this, the Asian salad was good too. Good service, good quality food & well priced!! Must go! read more
