You have to go to Chinatown and get the real stuff at Hunan Bistro or Spicy Hunan and the like, or you're out of luck. But there are exceptions. The Curry Shrimp here (extra spicy) is basic but easily the tastiest I've had in Texas. The other dishes I've had here are good too. Significantly better than some of the other popular Chinese American restaurants within 15 minutes of here. I'm shocked at myself that I've never reviewed a staple Chinese restaurant like Auntie Chang's! I've been coming to this restaurant since my college days, which was nearly a decade ago, and this place has kept me fed to fill my hangry days with happiness. Now, a few things. Just like most other restaurants, they have their "days," where they're off their game or food isn't quite consistently good every single time, but they've had mostly the same staff for years and always provide friendly service! They've survived storms, a pandemic, and probably multiple economic downturns, and they're still serving up some of the best dumplings and sesame chicken here in Houston! The lease can't be cheap because of the location, but their expansive menu offers some great lunch deals and great shumai! Over the years, I've tried quite a few menu items, but I typically only order one thing from here - and that's their sesame chicken! I have yet to find any other Chinese restaurant that batters, fry's and sauces their chicken the way they do here! I highly recommend it! I've been coming to this location for about 27 years since we were teenagers. One of the best Chinese spots in Houston. You cannot beat their lunch specials! Amazing prices, great customer service, an amazing food! Food: my go to here for years has been the general Sol's chicken. It's absolutely amazing. Fried to perfect perfection with an amazing general size chicken sauce. The eggroll and fried rice to come during the lunch special are simply amazing. Also, probably one of the best hot and sour soups in town. I'm a huge fan of this place. Everything is made fresh and I can't wait to keep coming back to try more things off their menu. I've come to Auntie Chang's Dumpling House a few times over the years, always by invitation. It is located on the second floor of a busy shopping complex off Shepard. Customer service on my visits have been ok. Just employees going through the motions really. The inside is nice and quiet as I have never seen a crowd here. I was super excited to come here the first time I was invited because I love me some dumplings. For being a dumpling restaurant, the variety here is pretty small. They have your typical dumpling filling options like beef, chicken, shrimp, pork and veggie. You can have those options either steamed or pan fried. I have tried all the meat options other than the shrimp. The filling is decent but a tad bit on the salty side. The dumpling dough consistency can be hit or miss. Sometimes they fall apart, other times it is thick and gummy. Some are spot on and delicious. They do have quite a variety of other Chinese dishes. I've had the General Tso's Chicken, Broccoli Beef, and fried rice. You know, the most generic Chinese food items. All have been tasty and satisfying, but nothing to write home about. All in all, it's a cute place with decent food. I just know there are way more dumpling options around town that I would rather go to when the cravings hit. Im between 3 and 4 stars. I saw this place on a quick run to target and figured why not stop by. I'm new to the area and I love me some dumplings so it was perfect. It was pretty busy for an early weekday lunch since there was only one server. I was a bit disappointed in the menu. For a place called dumpling house they only have like 6-8 dumplings in the menu. It's really a Chinese food place in my most humble opinion. I've been to dumpling houses in New York with pages of options so I was underwhelmed. I will say that the Linux special is a great deal though. Comes with choice of soup, entree (which can be dumplings), egg roll and fried rice for $11 or less. Taste was acceptable but not outstanding. If you're in the market for a good deal this place could work for you. read more

Auntie Changs is just a great place. It's unapologetically old school Chinese and I'm glad for it. You walk in, it's taking a step back in time with its decor, making a right hand turn down nostalgia lane. Funny thing though, even with its namesake, we hardly get the dumplings. What I never pass up here is the moo shoo pork. It's hands down my favorite in all of H-town, always superb with the wok-hei (wok's breath) you want. Other great dishes are the general tso's chicken (I have a soft spot for the General), the chicken with eggplant and black beans, any of their lo mein dishes, and their young chow fried rice. I was working in the area and saw they have lunch specials. They are reasonably priced. The place is on a second floor but there's an elevator if you have mobility issues. The dining room is bright and looks toward the parking lot. I ordered shrimp with garlic sauce. It comes with a vegetable egg roll, rice and soup. I took a star off because my eggdrop soup was lukewarm. Otherwise, my dish was a generous serving and flavorful with lots of veggies. Though it has the spicy sign on the menu, you can order it non spicy. I look forward to trying veggie dumplings. read more

This may have been the most lackluster Chinese food I have ever eaten. I found it on UberEats and of course came straight to Yelp for reviews. All I can say is maybe they were having an off day because I am not a fan. I can't comment on the service and ambiance, as I did not dine it. I ordered and had my food delivered. Spring roll - This was the only thing I ordered that was actually pretty good. It was crispy on the outside like it should be and soft yet crunchy and yummy on the inside. Singapore Fried Rice Noodles - This is normally one of my favorite dishes. Not at this place though. My noodles lacked that delicious, signature curry flavor and were just bland. I did everything I could to doctor it up and make it edible. But, ultimately just threw the dish in the trash. Pan Fried Shrimp Dumplings - Very mushy and did not look like any shrimp dumplings I have ever had. Most mince the shrimp and pack it in. These were small, whole shrimp stuffed inside a wonton and nothing else. I appreciated the whole shrimp, although different. But, these were so mushy that they weren't edible. It could have been due to delivery. So, I'll give them that. But, regardless the flavor was still lacking. Beef with Broccoli - Another lackluster dish. This was not mine, but I tasted it so I could review it. We love beef and broccoli around here and were extremely disappointed with the subpar flavor in this dish. I have never been to this restaurant and I think it's safe to say this was the first and last order I will place here. Not a fan. read more

Went a couple times several years ago (pre covid) and I have to say I enjoyed the food and overall experience more then than now. Dined in last week with a friend and had shrimp dumplings, spring rolls, and egg drop soup. Dumplings were maybe a 3/5 and the spring rolls must have been put together while ingredients were still damp since they fell apart all over my plate as I tried to eat them. My friend even stated that he kept sending the smell of a dirty dish rag or sponge. Our service was okay and we didn't complain about anything but I doubt I will return any time soon. read more

It's true, the place does smell when you walk in, but also consider how old this place is. They've been around for a long time. I mean genji's smells when you walk in, but everyone still goes for karaoke. Pick and choose your battles. As I'm waiting for my food I do see TONS, of to go orders being placed, and forgot to mention there's this huge neon green dragon upon walking in. There's like two sides to the place, one separate from green dragon dining area. Let's move to the food: I ordered assorted dumplings and half pecking duck. The pecking duck skin was not crispy, but I absolutely enjoyed that it was not super greasy like other places. Like it tasted healthier if that makes sense. The dumplings were not folded or presented as modern as we all know to be. They also said I can order all dumplings pan fried if I want. I would say... it's ok. The food was ok, but I am giving this place 4 stars because service was great, vibe was decent, and food was decent and inexpensive. If I was a student at UST OR UH. I would've been going ham coming here. It's a place where it's comfortable, you get to know your servers, and easy to have a relationship with the owner if you come frequently.
