The seasoning had a spicy, tangy flavor that reminded me of lemon pepper. For the entrées, I ordered the Pad See Ew with pork (hot spice level) and the Crab Fried Rice (medium spice level). The Pad See Ew had thick, chewy wide noodles that absorbed the sauce nicely. The pork was tender, and the Chinese broccoli provided a refreshing crunch to the dish. I ordered my dish at a hot spice level, and it was the perfect amount of heat for me. I was really impressed by the Crab Fried Rice. They were very generous with the crab meat. Each spoonful had large chunks of crab, which tasted fresh and added a delicious hint of sweetness to the fried rice. For dessert, I highly recommend the mango sticky rice. Overall, everything here tasted alright, but the portions were so small for the price, so I felt the value just wasn't there. Thai Papaya Salad - crisp and refreshing with a good balance of spicy, sour, sweet, and salty, but I was expecting a bigger portion than what was served for the price. Pad Thai - pretty saucy and a bit too sweet for my taste. Crab Fried Rice - happy with the healthy amount of crab chunks in here, but the rice tasted dry and under seasoned. Green curry - the short ribs were extremely tender, but there was barely any curry... the depth of the curry in the bowl was like 1cm.... A bowl of white rice was served on the side and the rice here also seemed on the dry side. Edamame: A bit overcooked and a touch over salted. Fried long beans: Significantly undercooked and very crunchy. Rather than sautéed well, a layer of oil coated all the beans. Nice garlic flavor. Green curry: Honestly felt like a mix of green and yellow curry to me. While the flavor was pleasant, it was a little thin for my taste and quite high in heat level, even the mild. The fried eggplant was my favorite component of this dish, otherwise the vegetables were intermittently undercooked. Fried rice: My favorite dish of the night, this had excellent wok breath and was cooked well with the individual rice kernels still retaining their chew but cooked all the way through. My family loves Som Boon! Food can be a little inconsistent sometimes but when it hits, it's soooo good! Our favs: Tiger Cry Ribeye Garlic Jalapeño wings Moo Ping Crab fried rice Skip the desserts. Not their strong suit. It's not the cheapest Thai restaurant. I wish they would invest a little more money on ambiance. It's not a vibe making it more of a quick lunch spot instead of a dinner joint for me. Service is good when it's slow. After a number of referrals, I decided to try Som Boon Thai Restaurant this evening. Upon walking in, it was a nice atmosphere. Everybody seemed to be enjoying their food. We had to wait for a few minutes because most of their tables were taken up by a large party, but once we were sat, we were promptly taking care of the staff was very very nice. My first red flag for the night was the only iced tea that they had available. Was either Thai tea or bottled tea so I stuck with water although I really would've liked some real iced tea, I ordered some crispy spring rolls and the short rib Panang Curry. The crispy spring rolls or egg rolls as they're called here. We're very nice well-made nice sauce, but the store of the show was definitely the Curry, almost every. Panang Curry that I've had in Houston has fallen short, but this one did not at all. It was one of the best ones that I've had in years and even with them not having iced tea I will go back just for this dish, but that being said my guest had the Som Boon Kai Kua Noodles which were equally amazing. All in all it was a great experience, but I have to say once again it was an extreme disappointment to not be able to get fresh brewed iced tea and it would detour me from going there very often. I was really excited to try this place. Thai food is one of my favorite cuisines and a lot of Houston food bloggers I follow raved about this place. To start off with the positives, it's located in a strip mall and has a lot of parking. The service was also quick for it being decently busy at dinner time. Some of the dishes we ordered were delicious. We were told to order the tiger cry, which is grilled ribeye steak. The steak by itself was good but dipping it in the 2 sauces it comes with is the game changer. My other favorite was the salt toasted pork belly. If you have a low spice tolerance, even the mild spice has a kick to it. There's bits of bird's eye chili that will catch you off guard. I liked the crispiness of the pork belly and it was super flavorful with rhe crispy garlic and chili. The pad thai was okay. The pineapple fried rice was also underwhelming. The pineapple chunks weren't really that sweet so there wasn't that usual contrast of sweet and savory that you get. My friend ordered the green curry (not pictured) and he wasn't impressed. Somboon Thai is definitely worth a visit! You'll want to get seated quickly because this place fills up fast--and I can see why. The food is delicious, super affordable, and perfect whether you're grabbing lunch or enjoying a casual date. I went with coworkers, and the plates just kept coming. I've had a few opportunities to dine in and take out from Som Boon and each time I've been impressed with the quality and consistency of their offerings. The menu has all the traditional favorites one would expect from a Thai restaurant in the States; I've particularly enjoyed the smoky fried rice paired with zingy fish sauce, the saucy pad thai woon sen, and the deliciously charred moo ping skewers accompanied with sticky rice. Service is efficient and all food is prepared quickly, so your belly won't be rumbling too long after you arrive :) There's no shortage of excellent Thai restaurants in Houston, reflecting the full spectrum of casual, street-food fare to high-end fine dining experiences - and while Som Boon hews more toward the former, the food here could easily find its way onto a table of the latter. I'd been wanting to try Som Boon for a while. We finally stopped by and we really enjoyed it. We were greeted by the welcoming staff and were promptly seated. Started off with some wings and pork skewers. Both were cooked perfectly and had accompanying sauces that really complimented the dishes. We then had fried rice and pad ka praw, both with tofu since we already had plenty of meat. Both of these were also very flavorful and were served with the Thai staple of fish sauce/lime juice/Thai peppers that I've grown to be addicted to. We just discovered this Thai spot along I-10, located in the same plaza as Starbucks and what used to be Samurai Noodle. Parking is a breeze with plenty of spaces in their lot. For a small mom-and-pop shop, the place is newly renovated, modern, and kept clean. While the bowls and plates are plastic, the metal utensils have a nice weight to them. (And if, like me, you feel odd eating Thai food with a fork, they also offer metal chopsticks.) The menu is simple yet features all the classics. Hello Thai cuisine findings ! This place offers a simple selection of soup, curries, noodles, fried rice choices, among many others. It's located off i-10, really just facing it. The parking is good, I've never had a problem. Been a few times now and they have been quite consistent, even on the takeout! I really like their curries, green or panang. They're super generous on the ingredients, that is plenty of proteins until I even get the surprise to find more when almost satisfied and full! Flavor is rich and rice is delicious. Noodles are plentiful too. Sometimes, I wonder if the portions are enough for 1.5 or even 2 people! Now, watch out for your spice level. Medium is a good kick already. Or maybe it's a personal problem and I need more training (more Thai food ? Lol) Service is quite prompt. Place doesn't stink. The two ladies at service are always smiling. Groups up to 4-5 are ok but more you may have to wait, depending on the time you'd walk in. The decors are simple, nothing extra to declare. Tables are decorated with small little bouquets. I really hate leaving a 3.5-star review because I genuinely enjoy the food, the establishment is clean and the staff are friendly. We stopped by for a quick lunch. We ordered the chicken pad thai and an off-menu item that our server described as similar to larb, but it ended up being more like the Tiger Cry appetizer. I thoroughly enjoyed my Pad Thai, and while the off-menu dish was good, it was essentially just seasoned beef--we could have just ordered the Tiger Cry appetizer instead. Plus, it didn't come with any rice or sticky rice, so we had to order that separately. The thai ice tea is good - not too sweet What really bothered us was the $2 charge for chili pepper and fish sauce. I understand that they sell it by the jar, but since we were dining in, it should have been complimentary. $2 isn't a big deal, but it's the principle of it. The prices are on the higher side since they don't offer a lunch menu--it's the same pricing all day. We ordered the green curry, beef pad Thai, and pad ka praw with ribeye. The flavors were solid and everything we ordered tasted authentic and portions were good. The amount of rice that came with the panang curry may have been enough for one person but not for two. I guess I just eat a lot of rice and expected more from this place. It was definitely hard to decide what I wanted to eat! My cousin and I shared the string beans, the crab fried rice, the Laos style papaya salad and the Kua noodles! 1. Fried Long Beans - the beans were cooked perfectly in a garlic sauce! Delicious! 2. Laos Papaya Salad - might've been our least favorite dish we ordered. I didn't quite enjoy the flavors of this papaya salad. I'm used to Laos style papaya salad being really fishy with fermented fish paste. This one wasn't it. It had crab in it and was pretty spicy but the sauce wasn't something I enjoyed. 3. Kai Kua Noodles - this dish was the one that looked the most amazing on IG. I love that Yelp brings people together in this way - Huyen C and I made plans to come here for lunch after we discovered our mutual love for good thai food. I'd say this passed our test. First thing I said walking in was "there are so many men here!" Most tables were full. Good sign for a new business. But whenever you walk in you're welcome by a huge extravagant chandelier hanging in the middle of the restaurant. The servers are nice and quick to sit you and take your orders.
