Pad see ew
Ann L.

A great spot for Thai food in the area. Spacious lot with plenty of parking. It wasn't crowded on a weekday night, so it was easy to grab a table. Their menu offers a variety of Thai dishes from appetizers, noodles, fried rice, and curry.   We ordered a few items to share: - Crab fried rice: my fave out of everything. A good amount of crab meat to rice ratio. Fried rice wasn't mushy. - Pad see ew: good texture on the flat noodles, chicken wasn't dry. Good balance on the saltiness. - Papaya salad: refreshing, nice citrus flavor in the sauce. - Tiger cry: beef was tendered, not overcooked. The sauces paired well with the beef. - Green curry: good level of spice, paired well with the white rice.   The portion was decent. Wait time for the food wasn't bad. Service was friendly. Casual ambience. Overall, we enjoyed everything we tried. Would come back to try more of their menu.

Panang Curry Pork Short Ribs

Situated in the middle of an unassuming strip, this restaurant boasts flavorful dishes in a sleek, modern setting. I tried two different varieties of their chicken wing appetizers and the Panang Curry Short Ribs. Everything was amazing. As expected, the coconut milk in the red curry really cut the spice, so even the Extra Thai Hot spice level didn't taste very spicy. The server was kind enough to bring over dried spices, peppers, and chili oil though to help supplement.

Great little Thai spot! Somboon Thai Kitchen has a nice, low-key atmosphere and wasn't crowded when we went. I had the chicken pad see ew and it was delicious. The staff was very friendly, and everything felt relaxed and welcoming. Definitely a great neighborhood Thai place!

Thai Papaya Salad

Overall, everything here tasted alright, but the portions were so small for the price, so I felt the value just wasn't there. Thai Papaya Salad - crisp and refreshing with a good balance of spicy, sour, sweet, and salty, but I was expecting a bigger portion than what was served for the price. Pad Thai - pretty saucy and a bit too sweet for my taste. Crab Fried Rice - happy with the healthy amount of crab chunks in here, but the rice tasted dry and under seasoned. Green curry - the short ribs were extremely tender, but there was barely any curry... the depth of the curry in the bowl was like 1cm.... A bowl of white rice was served on the side and the rice here also seemed on the dry side. I don't like their table layout here either, we were seated at a table for two and the table was so small that it was an uncomfortable dining experience.

We came here on the hunt for some good and authentic Thai food. It was a hidden gem to say the least. The staff was so kind, and we were seated immediately despite it being a little busy on a Saturday. We ordered quickly (Pad Woon Sen - medium spice and Pad Thai - medium). In true fashion of overestimating myself, the medium was a pretty good spice level for me minus the few stray chilis that tried to take me out. It was SO good though! At the time, the World Cup was on so everyone was pretty locked in on the TV but I still got a chance to take in the aesthetic of the restaurant which was cute and cozy. I really enjoyed myself and will definitely return!

Tamarind Chicken Wings sauce is sweet

I didn't picture our main course but it was so good! The tamarind wings were nice, not spicy more on the sweet side. So glad our waiter recommended that. Nice Thai spot I will be back

Som Boon Thai was some good, some meh. The inside is newly renovated from the previous restaurant with a dark and gold accent vibe. Service was mediocre. Edamame: A bit overcooked and a touch over salted. Fried long beans: Significantly undercooked and very crunchy. Rather than sautéed well, a layer of oil coated all the beans. Nice garlic flavor. Green curry: Honestly felt like a mix of green and yellow curry to me. While the flavor was pleasant, it was a little thin for my taste and quite high in heat level, even the mild. The fried eggplant was my favorite component of this dish, otherwise the vegetables were intermittently undercooked. Fried rice: My favorite dish of the night, this had excellent wok breath and was cooked well with the individual rice kernels still retaining their chew but cooked all the way through. The Chinese broccoli lent crunchiness, the chicken was tender, and the sauce complemented the overall dish well. I'd get takeout fried rice from here and perhaps try the stirred noodle dishes, but I wouldn't order the other dishes again.

Flavorful!! Ordered the following items: -Pad See Ew w/ Beef -Pad Thai w/ shrimp -Papaya Salad -Green Curry -Panang Curry -Fried Long Bean Everything was flavorful and even mild had a bit of a kick to it. All of the curries came with white rice to be paired with. The papaya salad was fresh and quite authentic. Need to go back and try the thai tea because when ordering togo, they forgot to add my 2 thai teas to give to the driver. Pedro noted my order # and said the next time i come in he will give the thai teas and add an extra one.

Mango Sticky Rice

Som Boon Thai is a cozy Thai restaurant that serves delicious food and offers great service. As an appetizer, I got the Laab Chicken Wings. The wings had a crispy batter and were seasoned very well. The seasoning had a spicy, tangy flavor that reminded me of lemon pepper. For the entrées, I ordered the Pad See Ew with pork (hot spice level) and the Crab Fried Rice (medium spice level). The Pad See Ew had thick, chewy wide noodles that absorbed the sauce nicely. The pork was tender, and the Chinese broccoli provided a refreshing crunch to the dish. I ordered my dish at a hot spice level, and it was the perfect amount of heat for me. I was really impressed by the Crab Fried Rice. They were very generous with the crab meat. Each spoonful had large chunks of crab, which tasted fresh and added a delicious hint of sweetness to the fried rice. For dessert, I highly recommend the mango sticky rice. The mango was incredibly sweet and flavorful, and I was glad they provided a generous portion. The sticky rice and savory coconut cream paired perfectly with the sweet mango. I had a great meal at Som Boon Thai and will definitely be back in the future!

Found this Thai restaurant in the Heights randomly and it turned out to be quite good. We ordered a lot of dishes for 5 people and most of them are good. Except for the fried fish, wasn't too good. Staffs are friendly.

Somboon Thai is definitely worth a visit! You'll want to get seated quickly because this place fills up fast--and I can see why. The food is delicious, super affordable, and perfect whether you're grabbing lunch or enjoying a casual date. I went with coworkers, and the plates just kept coming. We tried several different dishes (pictures attached!), and every one of them was fresh, flavorful, and satisfying. The portions are generous, the service is quick, and the overall vibe makes you feel right at home. I would absolutely recommend Somboon Thai and will definitely be going back again.

Som Boon Pad Thai Woon Sen and Thai Fried Rice
Chris W.

I've had a few opportunities to dine in and take out from Som Boon and each time I've been impressed with the quality and consistency of their offerings. The menu has all the traditional favorites one would expect from a Thai restaurant in the States; I've particularly enjoyed the smoky fried rice paired with zingy fish sauce, the saucy pad thai woon sen, and the deliciously charred moo ping skewers accompanied with sticky rice. Service is efficient and all food is prepared quickly, so your belly won't be rumbling too long after you arrive :) There's no shortage of excellent Thai restaurants in Houston, reflecting the full spectrum of casual, street-food fare to high-end fine dining experiences - and while Som Boon hews more toward the former, the food here could easily find its way onto a table of the latter. On my next visit I'm eager to try the fried fish or crab fried rice paired with one of their soups - hope to see you there soon!

Crab Fried Rice and Pad Kee Mao with pork
Alexandra K.

Walked in and ordered food to go on Saturday afternoon! The food was given to me within 15 minutes of ordering. The restaurant was recommended to me on TikTok and I was pleasantly surprised with the quality. The restaurant had a bit of a gross smell and it was really hot in there so I'll probably be taking out vs eating dine in. I ordered the crab fried rice and the pad kee mao. I ordered both "hot" and boy were they spicy!! Both dishes were fantastic and I'll be ordering them again next time I visit. The crab fried rice was my favorite.

I can confidently say that I was disappointed. There was not one dish that stood out or that I would recommend or come back for. I especially was sad that the crying tiger flavors really missed the mark. The sticky rice that came with it felt like it was reheated and some parts were hard. It also tasted like some of the vegetables (green beans and carrots) that come with the entrees were frozen, not fresh. The jasmine green tea tastes like a powder mix. Some of the squid tasted freezer burned. The kua kling was the most interesting and unique of the dishes, but not one that I would go out of my way to eat again. The sticky rice with mango was as expected. The coconut ice cream is probably pre-portioned and frozen so was rock solid when it came out. I did not find most of the toppings particularly good. It was a busy Friday and I know service was busy. The food did not take long to come out, but we definitely had dishes from previous courses that stacked up, and we had to ask them to be taken away. They do have a high chair for toddlers and brought a plastic plate/utensils, but there was not a changing table in the bathroom we used. We have had such great experiences at other Thai restaurants in Houston that I would not come back.

It could easily reach that level. Our waitress, Ann, was incredibly kind, soft spoken, and welcoming. My friend Sherita suggested this restaurant after we left a Yelp office hour, and I'm so glad she did because it introduced me to something I never knew I needed: the salmon mango fried rice. It was absolutely amazing. I originally planned to take some home for my son to try, but it was so delicious that I finished every bite in one sitting. Sherita had visited earlier in the week and tonight shared that she arrived; right before I walked in which was 30 minutes before closing time, Jackie told her to hurry up and order, even though she already knew exactly what she wanted and didn't even need a menu. Jackie response was unprofessional and didn't even wait till the table guest got to the table, which was less than seconds since we all arrive at the same time, and left the same place. During our visit, Jackie never brought us water. A couple who was seated after us received water before we did. It took over 10 minutes for us to get water. Ann took great care of us, but anytime we wanted a refill, we had to ask. At one point my glass was completely empty. I noticed Jackie refilling the water glasses for a table of six, so I managed to get his attention. He looked directly at me, scanned the room, then stomped away all fast without acknowledging my request. Instead, he told Ann that we wanted water, and she graciously brought it over. Even at the end of our meal, Jackie stood behind the register while my friends waited to pay, yet another employee ended up taking their payment. His overall energy felt very cold and unwelcoming. My friend even joked that it was probably for the best that he didn't refill my water because of the energy he was carrying. As someone who believes water absorbs energy, I honestly agreed. I'm grateful Ann was the one who served us with such kindness. The restaurant itself has such a peaceful, zen atmosphere. The greenery outside and the warm lighting inside create a cozy neighborhood spot that I truly want to love and revisit with my son. Thank you , Sherita for introducing me and Aaliyah to this hidden gem. I completely understand why you visited twice in one week. I'll definitely be back to explore more of the menu, and hopefully next time the hospitality matches the quality of the food.
