We just moved to the area and were on the hunt for our new go-to Thai spot... safe to say, the search is officially over. The Panang curry was packed with flavor--rich, creamy, and easily one of the best we've had. The portion was huge, too. You could definitely share it with a friend... although you may not want to once you take the first bite. The Tiger Cry steak was cooked perfectly and came with an incredible dipping sauce that had us making sure not a drop went to waste. But if there was an unexpected MVP of the night, it had to be the garlic mussels. Seriously, don't skip them. They were absolutely loaded with flavor and disappeared way too fast. The service was just as impressive as the food. Everyone was friendly, attentive, and made us feel welcome from the moment we walked in. Vince, the owner, even stopped by our table to make sure we were having a great date night, which was such a nice personal touch and really showed how much he cares about his guests. Amazing food, generous portions, fantastic service, and people who genuinely care about your experience--what more could you ask for? Chalong is a small Thai eatery in midtown with nice aesthetics, not a typical hole in the wall restaurant. Located in a small commercial strip with limited parking. Would advise not to come during peak lunch or dinner hours. Spicy garlic crispy pork - flavor was on point. Crispy as expected. The spiciness doesn't hit you at first, but it does build. Southern Thai crab curry - got it in mild and it was enjoyable for me. It comes with a small bowl of rice. I wished the soft shell crab was a bit bigger though. Jaew Hon on sticks - came with 4 sticks. We asked for half hot and half mild. The pork was juicy, not overcooked. Enjoyed the marinade. Comes with sticky rice. Thai iced tea - usually comes with whipped cream, but I asked for one without it. I've had better honestly for that $6 price point. Every now and then you come across a restaurant that completely blows you away and makes you wonder how more people don't know about it yet. That was exactly my experience with Chalong. I first found it on a random weeknight after getting a craving for mango sticky rice on uber eats. I decided to throw in a Pad Thai too so I could have lunch for the next day. It was SO good that I literally made the exact same order again the next night for dinner. A few days later, my boyfriend and I decided we had to try the actual restaurant for a date night. It's a small spot in Midtown that is really nicely decorated and super cozy. It was pretty quiet when we went with mostly Uber Eats drivers coming in and out. We started with the crispy veggie egg rolls and they were the perfect start to the meal. Super crispy, flavorful, and honestly addicting. For our entree, we shared the Sizzling Thai Sukiyaki, which is a pan fried glass noodle dish with chicken, shrimp, vegetables, and a spicy sukiyaki sauce. It was AMAZING. So flavorful and perfectly spicy. I'm usually nervous ordering spicy dishes at Thai restaurants because sometimes the heat completely overpowers the flavor but this one was done perfectly. Don't get me wrong, my nose was absolutely running by the end but in the best way possible!!! To finish off dinner, we ordered the mango sticky rice. It's one of those desserts that's hard to mess up but somehow theirs still stood out. The mango was perfectly ripe and sweet and everything tasted so fresh. I also have to mention the service because it was genuinely great. Our server was attentive, knowledgeable, and clearly a big fan of the food himself which made the experience even better. I try a lot of new restaurants, and it's rare to find one that checks every single box and immediately becomes a place you want to keep coming back to. Chalong definitely did that for us. Incredible experience! Came here on a whim after a walk due to a Thai food craving and it was a lovely experience. We met the owner who informed us that they will be expanding soon and I honestly cannot wait. To start we had the spicy garlic green beans which had a bit of a kick but not too much. They were delicious. Then I had the Southern Thai Crab Curry and it was exceptional. Filling, piping hot and the flavors were insane. I got it hot, one level below Thai hot and it was perfect. I got the chicken pad see ew from Chalong Thai in midtown to go for a quick meal since I was in the area. I noticed that some of the noodles were still light and others dark, the lighter noodles didn't have any soy sauce on them so they were pretty bland, whereas the darker noodles were fine. I am usually used to pad see ew having drunken flat noodles like pad kee mao. The noodles they use here are flat but very thin, not the wider kind that I usually see. This place honestly surprised us! We arrived on a Friday night around 615. It's in strip center with On the Kirb -- and parking can be a bit limited. The place is very small but very cute. We didn't have a reservation but were seated promptly. They had a HRW menu so we decided to go for that. What a great value! And it was 4 courses! The medium spice level was still hot, as you'd expect from an authentic Thai place. Everything was tasty! The only thing we wouldn't get again would be the pad see ew. We just prefer drunken noodles flavor (pad kee mao). There was one server for all tables and he did an excellent job! Saw the female chef moving around a bit. Came here for HRW lunch with a fellow Yelper. Coincidentally we wanted the same food options from appetizer to dessert! Started with crispy spring rolls, then a small portion of Pad Thai, and ended with a plate of sticky rice with black beans. I loved all my food. They were cooked well and flavorful. Overall food tasted great and authentic; definately tastes like Thai grandma cooking in the back. - Parking on a Friday night is horrible. No parking and 6+ cars waiting for someone to leave - I wish the sever gave me the option of mild, medium, or hot for my beef salad - it was just wayy too hot for just ordering the beef salad. - Since there was only one waiter, it was tough trying to get water refills on time - The pacing of the main dishes were off. My gf got her main dish, then I got my main dish 15 minutes after. It felt weird her eating while I'm staring at her eating. I can tell the back there was only one person cooking. - Some tables left because the service was too slow :( Overall good tasting Thai, I would probably do takeout or set the expectation you will be there wonderig where your food is until they fix their kitchen issues. - Table spacing felt a little snug to one another, but that's just my personal preference. read more

We dropped in for lunch on a Sunday. Note that the restaurant seats maximum capacity of 24 ppl. The space has modern decor and clean. We were a party of 6 and no one else dining at the time we ordered. The menu has a good variety of dishes but no noodle soups. We ordered the following dishes: * Som Tum Thai - this was good but the papaya was not mashed as I'm used to, appeared to only be shredded and tossed * Beef Salad - beef was way too chewy, we left half of this plate behind * Shake Chic Chick - good, a little on the overcooked, dry side * Spicy Garlic Crispy pork - one of the most flavorful dish at this luncheon, cooked perfectly and well seasoned. Every bite had a nice crunch. * Roti w/Curry - a little thinner in sauce and roti than I'm used to but it was devoured * Crab Fried Rice - lacked the garlic flavor that I'm used to with Thai crab fried rice but still really good. * Hang Over Soup Chicken - great soup after a long night, clear, spicy broth * Crispy Garlic Prawns - this was too overcooked, almost like eating rubber. The seasoning was great but the shrimp itself was not as good as it appeared. * Grilled Cuttlefish - was warned this would take 30 mins to cook, well worth the wait. Perfect bouncy texture served with two dipping sauce. * Crispy Pork - way too fatty and overly crispy, about 20% was meat and the rest was fat * Mango sticky rice - sticky rice and coconut cream were great, mango was on the sour side Pad Kee Mao Beef - nice size, very good Thai Ice Tea - pretty and good Fresh Lime Ice Tea - tastes odd, not used to this drink but never had it before here. I felt bad for our server, she was the only one working and appears to also be helping in the kitchen as she would disappear back there for periods of time until the food arrived. Thai tea - very good, not too sweet, only downside is that it is tiny. I think the whipped cream is unnecessary, but that's something you can opt out of. Shake Chic Chick - reminds me of popcorn chicken; I like the batter but I think it could be crispier. Some pieces were a bit stale. Stir-fried Suki - normally this is one of my most favorite Thai dish. I think Chalong does it well it terms of flavor, ingredients, and spice. However, it was very mushy for my preference where the glass noodle almost disintegrates. Not sure if this is a chef stylistic choice, but I wasn't chewing at all for the most part. Po Tak Soup - light, sour, refreshing. Full of fish, shrimp, mussels, and squid. The only thing we ordered that wasn't spicy so it's a nice little break. Khua Kling - this dish knocked me out with how spicy it was. Be warn if you're not used to eating spice. Stir fried pork or chicken with curry paste, boiled egg, cucumbers. Looks and tastes amazing, although I couldn't hear anything after the first bite. Raw Shrimp - One of the few Thai restaurants that have this dish. So was the dessert she brought out at the end. I really enjoyed that. Decor and customer service is top notch here. I enjoyed talking with Pai. I have several dishes to try when I come back. This is a cute but small establishment nestled between downtown and the Montrose area. There's plenty of parking as it's in a small strip of businesses. This is a plus as you know it's a nightmare to find a restaurant with free parking and plenty of spaces. The food was delicious. It's definitely in my top 3 Thai restaurants in Houston, if not number one. The thai tea was more tea flavor than milk or sugar. It's perfect as it's not too sweet nor too creamy. The Pad Thai was saucy and not dry... not too sweet nor fish saucy nor sour from the tamarind paste. It's a perfect balance and the portion size was more than I expected. The crab cakes weren't too crab flavored. My best friend doesn't like seafood like that and she thought they weren't pungent. She really liked eating them with the sweet plum sauce that comes with it. The crab cakes were very crispy and also a good portion size. The Mussels Cooked in Garlic Butter Sauce were AMAZING. Once again bestie tried them and liked them despite not liking seafood. She put some of the sauce on the Pad Thai to try something new and she really liked the result. The mussels were also big and fresh. The Roti was slightly burnt but you couldn't taste it. The curry was a mild red curry I believe. It was good but mild. The Jaew Hon on Sticks were the best.. they were flavorful with a nice charred taste. I ended up ordering another portion. The Tom Yum soup was hearty with a more sour flavor. I prefer my Tom Yum more sour so it was exactly what I wanted. The Spicy and Garlic Crispy Pork were delicious. Super crispy but not dry.. full of flavor. The Thai BBQ chicken were moist and smoky. There were at least 5 big pieces so that was a great portion size. I forgot to take a picture of the papaya salad. It was refreshing and had a nice balance of flavor. Located in Midtown in a small plaza. Plenty of parking. The interior is very small; maybe seating for 6ish tables. We got the crispy pork (4/5) and roti with curry (1/5) for apps. The crispy pork resembled a southern Chinese style of BBQ pork; fairly tasty. The roti with curry was an Asian pancake with a curry dipping sauce; strong feeling that the pancake was a frozen / premade pancake because I've cooked some at home with the same consistency. I got the pad Thai for my entree; the portion was actually quite large and it was a decent version of pad Thai; my personal preference is for a slightly more tamarind/ saucier version. Overall, it's a decent Thai option for midtown; definitely need to try out some of the more Thai options (outside of the basic street food dishes). read more

Let me just say this visit was almost perfect! I was the first guest for lunch which was fine by me. First impressions it was quaint and well decorated. It is a small eatery but comfortable felt like home. I was greeted as soon as I came in. I let her know I needed to wash my hands and b lined straight to the bathrooms. They were clean as well. I really appreciated the extra care they took in making sure their facilities were clean. Often it is overlooked. Once seated my waitress came out and without me asking she offered selections that would be ideal for lunch. It was so effortless and not forced I had to try what she suggested which is a staple I enjoy cooking at home Pad Kaprow aka Thai Basil Chicken. I opted for Thai spicy which surprised her but iykyk lol. While waiting for my food she brought me a Thai tea to try out. It was soooo good and packed a punch. My lunch came out quickly and was hot. She also brought house condiments to compliment my meal. When I say the food was delicious it was delicious. Serving size was perfect and the egg was cooked perfectly as well. I was feeling it but midway but a thing happened. Now I'm an honest reviewer and I'm not here to put anyone down. Only state my experience. So take it as a grain of salt. There was a rather long hair in my food. I felt terrible because I didn't know how it would be received when I mentioned what happened. I could not keep eating, but let me tell you I wanted to finish my plate! I was having a serious inner dialogue about how to proceed when my waitress arrived to check in. I told her what happened and requested maybe just a half portion of what was left. Of course she went above my request and made it right. They remade the dish and provided me a coupon for $5 off my next visit. Now some people may have gone off but I understand it happens and it was an opportunity for them to learn in order to get better. I am Thai and of course, I love Thai food. I've been dining at Chalong Thai Eatery since the second day of its soft opening, and I've already noticed significant improvements with each visit. The owner and staff are incredibly attentive and eager to help, which makes for a welcoming experience. The flavors of the food are truly authentic, transporting me straight to Thailand with every bite. The crispy pork is definitely a standout, and the spicy & garlic crispy pork is hands down the best I've had - a solid 10/10. Bottom line: in my opinion, this place compares very favorably to local favorites like Street to Kitchen and Asia Market Thai Lao. Yes, that's high praise! The spot is tiny, I doubt it can seat a full 30 people. But it's clean, comfortable, and simple. Nothing fancy, suits me fine. The service is great and friendly, as you would expect from a place where you can barely be an arm's length from your server. Now to the food. The chef/owner is Thai and she clearly cares about authentically recreating the flavors of home. (That's one of the reasons Street to Kitchen comes immediately to mind.) You will of course find all the classic curries and noodle dishes you expect -- and they are good!-- but you'll also find dishes that are typical for Thai people, if not necessarily in American Thai restaurants. If you've never been to Thailand and wonder what kind of things they eat that don't always make the cut on American menus, give Chalong a look and maybe expand your Thai horizons. For example a dish I believe they call Chalong Pok Pok is basically som tum (papaya salad) with a house made anchovy sauce and salted crab. It may not be to everyone's palate (do you like, say, Vietnamese bun rieu?) but I love it and it's definitely real deal Thai, made with a lot of homemade care. Order it spicy and liberate your sinuses. I could go on about specific dishes -- eg the tom yum had exceptionally fresh ingredients: big, juicy, very fresh shrimp, a lot of lemongrass, not too much sweetness, etc.-- and maybe as I work may way through the entire menu (grilled cuttlefish next) I'll do that, but for now I'll just say this place is great and you should try it. read more

I've tried a lot of Thai places searching for a decent pad Thai and this is one of the best in Houston my opinion. I love that it comes with chicken and shrimp by default.
