When I think of the BEST jjajangmyeon in Houston, I think of Paik's Noodle. This location in spring branch is their original, and I grew up coming here for lunch every sunday after church. 1) Jjajangmyeon: My brother loves getting this one. It is sweet and a bit soupy from all the sauce. The noodles are chewy and bouncy, and get coated in the sauce nicely. There is a good amount of meat that comes with it too! The flavors are great. 2) Jaengbanjjajang: This is my go-to and personal favorite noodle dish to get here. It is similar to their original jjangmyeon except that it is less soupy and has a bit of spice. The spiciness adds a nice kick balancing the sweet and savory flavors. There are also lots of different mix ins like squid, shrimp, beef, and vegetables! The play on textures and contrasting flavors is why I love this dish 3) Spicy Chicken Wings (Yangnyeom): For not being a chicken wing restaurant, Paiks sure does serve some banger wings. Juicy big wings with a slight crisp on the outside. The sauce is amazing. It is that sweet and spicy yangnyeom korean fried chicken sauce. 4) Tangsuyuk: I never visit Paisk without ordering their tangsuyuk. Perfectly fried with a great chew. The pork is not too porky or gamey which is nice, and the sauce is a sticky sweet and sour sauce. 4) Gunmandoo: Their panfried dumplings are quite nice too! I haven't gotten them in a while, but they were solid Overall, I don't think there was a single dish I disliked here at Paiks. Service is standard, not too fast not too slow. The ambiance is not really one for dates or anything. It's super casual with metal chairs. It can get a bit cold. There are restrooms and water dispensers. Stopped by for dinner on the weekends! This isn't my usual location but I was in the area so I figured I might as well! There was a self-order kiosk at this location. They also offer free water cups at a little station in the corner of the restaurant! I ordered the classic black bean noodle bowl and 10 piece soy garlic fried chicken. However, Chef Paik is a world renowned Chef and I believe while the food was good, it was far from the best I've ever had. I'm new to houston, but for this classic Sino-korean cuisine, I felt something fell short of Chef Paik' legacy. There is a little section that has silverware, bowls, napkins, etc. We ordered chicken tangsuyuk, gunmandu, beef jjamppong, and jajangmeyeon. Chicken tangsuyuk (4/5) - the chicken was fried crispy on the outside but tender and moist on the inside and the sauce was nice, not too sweet or sour - you can pour it or dip it, we did the dip. Gunmandu (3/5) - this is a personal preference, I'm just not into hard fried dumplings. The filling was nice and it was crunchy. We tried out a few noodle dishes, I liked the stir-fry noodles and the seafood jjamppongbap. The restaurant is decently spacious. Parking might be a bit tight at times as it shares a lot with other small businesses. It's nothing fancy so maybe not the best if you're trying to impress your date with fine dining. Also note that it's a self-service restaurant. You get your own water and you bus your own tray and trash. You are still expected to tip when paying up front for your food though, so keep that in mind and just do it. We were planning on watching Season 2 of Squid Games and what better food to watch it with than good old Korean noodles. We stopped by on a weeknight to order our food to go. You walk in and order from a human or a machine. There's plenty of seating if you're dining in and it's also cool that you can see them in the back making your food. We got the stir fried jajangmyeon and the beef jjamppong to go. Both were delicious and filling. Probably the best jajangmyeon I've had in town. I ordered Paik's via UberEats one night cause my friend told me their Jajangmyeon tasted exactly like the one she had during her travels to Korean. I've never had jajangmyeon before so was curious after seeing it in a lot of k dramas! Well let me tell you... it is delicious! The noodles and the black bean sauce were sent in separate containers - the noodles were cooked perfectly Al dente, but was a bit clumped together cause that's just what noodles do when packaged up and not fresh.. but that's just because I ordered it to-go. The sauce was flavorful.. full of onions, some pork, and maybe some other veggies?! It was perfectly flavored, not too salty even though it was saucy. Tasted like a nice gravy over the noodles. The chilies are almost like Thai chili, they will straight up kick your ass. Black bean sauce and pork, name a better combo! It's such a comfort food, highly recommend it to everyone who's never had it (you don't need to get it spicy). There's plenty of other dishes to get as well. Quick and efficient, this Paik's Noodles spot serves up all your favorite Korean-Chinese dishes with large portions and reasonable prices. Amongst the different locations I've been to, I do like how this is more of an order/serve so you don't need to commit to full sit down service and they have several long tables that are good for a large group. It's not as spacious as some spots I've seen but it's definitely not cramped either. The food here is also a bit better than some of the locations (particularly in the midwest) that I've been to. I'm stil not a giant fan of the Tangsuyuk texture, but the gunmandu is some of the crispiest I've had at any Korean restaurant. Their noodles here continue to shine with the solid mean Jajanmyeon, Jaengban Jajang, and Bokkeummyeon with great umami. But what really stands out for me is the Chili peppers Jjamppong. I feel this is prepared a bit more spicy than what I get near Chicagoland, but it's super flavorful and delicious. This location has plenty of parking and seating inside so even if you have a big party, it's not too bad. You go up to a kiosk to order and grab it from the counter once your number is called. My friends and I ordered the regular jajangmyon, meat jajangmyon, and sweet and sour pork. We got the sweet and sour pork first and wow, I am hooked. The texture of the fried pork is incredible. It has that perfect crisp outside and juicy/tender meat inside. And even when you pour the sauce over the meat, it still retains the crispiness pretty well. I'm personally not crazy for the sweet and sour sauce but just the texture of the fried pork itself was so addicting. As for the jajangmyeon, as I stated earlier, we got both the original and the meat. I ordered the meat since I just wanted more protein and it was good but it's just the original with more meat on top lol. The meat itself was good though so no complaints. Right as you turn into the plaza, you'll see the tallest building with bright red signs nestled in a corner.
