Okay so I was hardcore craving jajangmyeon and did what I always do... went straight to TikTok. I saw a girl eating at Grandma Noodle and everything looked so good, especially the side dishes, so I immediately added it to my list. We went around 8 p.m. on a Friday and it was pretty quiet, only a couple of tables. Honestly, I loved that. We were greeted right away by the sweetest guy. I didn't catch his name, but he was super kind and attentive without hovering. Service was just really smooth and easy. My partner and I ordered the jajangmyeon and the jjamppong because you just have to get both. They're classic together. I was so excited to find a spot in Houston that serves them. The jjamppong was SO good. Like, immediately impressive. The broth had the perfect level of spice. It was bold and flavorful but not so spicy that you couldn't taste anything else. And they were generous with the seafood, which I always appreciate. The noodles were cooked perfectly too. If I'm being honest, this was the star of the night for me. The jajangmyeon was good in a different way. It tasted homemade and comforting, not overly flashy, just solid and cozy. It gave very much "family recipe" vibes. For close to two decades, Grandma Noodle delighted the Spring Branch community as one of the few Chinese-Korean spots in the entire city. The outside Hangul characters (백두산) is "Baek Du San" (#1) is a nod to the the tallest mountain along the North Korea-China border and the initial menu was rooted in bunsik (분식) style foods of Joong Han culture. As of right now, many of these foods are no longer served. It's clear that new ownership has turned this place into a shell of itself as a pseudo Vietnamese-Korean eatery. Previously the allure was clear: no pretense vibe with Korean ajummas in the back cooking up something delicious. Many traditional items such as soondae, mandoo, yukejang, dubu kimchi were stripped from the menu in favor of incorporating Vietnamese dishes that include com chien, banh mi, cha gio and pho. Even banchan now costs $1.99 as listed on the menu? (#2) Overall, the Korean portion of the order was extremely underwhelming. Gamjajeon (potato pancake) were served in mini circles and was laughably accompanied by an oversized Tramontina kitchen spatula. (#3) The cheese corn tasted like literal microwaved canned corn with a smattering of mozzarella on top. Instead of the jajangmyeon (which I was under the impression was unavailable), I went with the naengmyeon which semi-looked the part, but was sadly bland. The same bodes for the soondubu jigae, which was loaded with tofu and meats, but was still lacking. Instead of lamenting what could have been, I decided to focus on their Vietnamese portion of the menu. A plain pho with a side of cha gio was ordered and it was just as disappointing as the Korean fare. Bland broth and really subpar. While service tried their best, they seem understaffed. Many tables during my meal were not cleaned, with piles of dishes just sitting out in the open. Due to the slow service, it was a wait for some of our items. Ordering in Korean is practically a no-go, though Vietnamese is an option. There are some inconsistencies with the current status of the menu and they really need to adjust music they're playing. A friend picked this place for a lunch meeting. She suggested sharing some stuff so I just let her make the call and went to order. We ended up with the bibimbob and some sort of potato pancakes. Personally I was eyeballing the seafood soup, but when invited to lunch you go with the host wants to do. The food was tasty enough but I felt like there wasn't that much meat in the dish, and a lot of the flavors were kind of muted. Grandma's Noodle is a hole in wall restaurant; while driving at night, I nearly missed it because of how unassuming the sign outside the restaurant was. Additionally, I was a confused, because I assumed Grandma's Noodle would be a strictly Korean restaurant, yet, I saw photos of Banh Mi and "Vietnamese" which made me wonder if I was at the wrong spot. Upon entering with my friend, I hear Vietnamese karaoke playing in the background and our waitress greeted us in Vietnamese, which was a shocker to say these least! Needless to say, our waitress was incredibly sweet and made sure to check on us often. :-) My friend and I figured that the place was managed by Vietnamese workers now, since our menu had both Korean and Vietnamese dishes. We ordered the black bean noodles and spicy seafood noodle soup which came out quickly! They even provided my friend and I small bowls to share our meals which I thought was convenient. Definitely Grandma's cooking! We were greeted by a young man who is the owner's grandson. He set up our table with a paper placemat and eating utensils. After customers leave, he would help clean the tables. (He didn't serve any food or alcohol for the Yelp Karens out there, lol.) Lunch: Hot Chicken w/ Cheese- Tastes like chicken topped with cheese. Definitely not spicy, and I'm not mad at it because I can't eat super spicy foods. Grilled Mackerel- For the price and portion, worth it. I saw this place on social media a few months back about how there are several elderly Korean women who make great Korean food and will even watch your child while you eat. Came in for an early weekend lunch and was greeted by a Vietnamese family. I did have my reservations at first but decided to try it anyway and am glad I did. When we were seated, we chatted a bit with the lady owner. She mentioned how she was the new owner and had run into a tough time with the regulars from the old owners complaining that the food was no longer authentic. While I do appreciate authenticity in Korean food, as long as it tastes food, that's really all that matters to me in the end. Per her recommendation, we ordered the jjajangmyun and the jjamppong. Jjajangmyun ($12.99) Large portions, chewy noodles, would not have known a non-Korean cooked it. I don't see why people were complaining other than just doing it for the sake of it. Typical 아줌마s probably. While I don't think the noodles were handmade in house, they had good texture and the sauce was good with a large portion of meat, which is hard to find at other Korean restaurants. Jjamppong ($12.99) Jjamppong was the same with large portions and the same chewy noodles. I'm not huge on jjamppong but it did taste just like all the other jjamppongs that I have had. I was also able to order a Banh Xeo (not sure if it's on the menu). This Vietnamese crepe was delicious and one of the best banh xeos that I have had. It was filled with seafood and the exterior was super crispy. It wasn't super heavy or greasy, and it tasted amazing. Hopefully she will let others try this. While I did not visit Grandma Noodle under the old management, the food now tastes exactly how I would want my Korean/Chinese noodle dishes to taste. The price is a great value for how big the portions are and the service is outstanding. The ability to order Vietnamese dishes cooked by Vietnamese people is the big bonus. Usually when a restaurant mixes different cuisines, they'll put up a big sign called "Asian Bistro" and have everything mediocre. The name translates to "cool/refreshing drink" and it lives up to its name! It's not too sweet, which is what I like. * Cà phê sữa đá (viet iced coffee with condensed milk) - Nice strong coffee that packs a punch, good level of sweetness to balance it out. The owners of this restaurant are so sweet and friendly!! They are a Viet couple who took it over after the previous owner retired. She taught them how to cook traditional Korean food, and they are keeping her recipes alive while also adding in some Viet dishes of their own. Ms. Loan does the table service and her husband does the cooking. At the end of our meal, she brought us a sample of Bánh khoai mì (viet coconut cassava cake) that she had made and it was delicious. One of the best hole in the wall (literally) places I've tried in Houston's "Koreatown". Grandma Noodle is quite hard to spot and it sits inside a somewhat run down building next to a gas station. The open light sign in the window will guide you to the right door. Once inside, prepare to experience some wonderful home cooked authentic Korean food that will leave your hearts and bellies full! On a Monday night, the place was pretty empty with only one other elderly couple dining in. We ordered spicy rice cakes, hand cut noodles with seafood, and dough flake soup with potato, which was recommended over the one with kimchi. Whatever season it may be, despite Houston's hot a muggy weather at this time of year, this is the ultimate comfort food. The seafood noodle soup was delicious and there was a generous assortment of seafood inside including shrimp, mussels, imitation crab, and mini octopus. The potato dough flake soup was amazing as well. As for the spicy rice cakes, we requested for less spicy to be kinder to our aging stomachs, which they accommodated well. This restaurant is literally run by Korean grandma's and it was honestly such an adorable experience. My partner and I came in on a Friday night and it was pretty busy but thankfully, they cleaned a table right as we walked in and we were seated pretty quickly. The tofu was good and there were plenty of veggies and generic seafood mixes but the soup itself was a little bland compared to what I usually get from other Korean restaurants. I personally wouldn't order this again if I were to visit - The JiaJang Myun was also just okay. This dish typically has bits and pieces of pork but this one only had mushrooms, zucchini, and onions. I personally would also skip this one too. - The Osam BulGoGi was our favorite. The flavor was great, the dish had lots of squid, pork, celery, cabbage, and other veggies. The seasoning was great and made the dish savory and delicious. It is more on the expensive side (25.99) but the portion is big and sharable. - At the end of every meal (when they give us the check), it comes with a Yakult (a classic probiotic drink) which I absolutely loved Warning: it does take a while when it gets busy so if you're in a hurry, this might not be the spot for you (our dining experience was ~1.5 hours). My mentor and I checked out Grandma Noodle in Houston. It's a mom and pop Korean restaurant that's actually run by grandmas. They also have a viet lady who works there too and have a few Vietnamese items that you can order. My mentor got the jjajangmyun (noodle with bean sauce) and I got the haemool son kalgooksoo(hand cut noodle with seafood) we also got the gyeranmali (rolled fried egg) haemoolpajeon (seafood pancake). The kalgooksoo had a really hearty broth and is loaded with noodles and seafood. It had shrimp, mussels, squid, and scallop in it. I love the stewed soft cucumbers that are in it too. This is a really good soup for whenever you're sick and need a pick me up. The jjajangmyun has a thick bean sauce that is savory with a little sweetness. It has a unique taste and texture. These go really well with the yellow radish banchan that they give you. The egg had some ingredients mixed in. It's basically like a big somewhat stuffed omelet. The seafood pancake was pretty big for the price. It's somewhat crispy on the outside and mushy on the inside and comes with a soy sauce dip. Both of them were pretty solid. The new ownership is a nice Vietnamese lady and they have introduced Vietnamese entree options in addition to the Korean menu. The complimentary banchan side dishes seem to have gone down hill. The Korean dishes no longer taste the same compared to previous experiences. One of the staff members dropped a wash rag on the floor and then put it back on the food prep counter, rather than pulling out a new wash rag and placing it in a laundry bin or sink for sanitation and reuse. A little bit of home in Houston! The grandma who works there is from Korea and English is her second language, but that won't stop her from pumping out bomb food! I've been to Grandma Noodle three times now and have loved it each time. This place is a hidden gem for sure. We love the kimchi fried rice, spicy pork bulgogi and bibimbap. Was in the area for some shopping & wanted a quick lunch afterwards. Decided to give this restaurant a try. This is a hole-in-the-wall place but we were instantly welcomed when we walked in with Grandmas chatting and having a great old time. Felt just like coming to grandma's for a warm meal. The complimentary Kimchi was yummy and unique as we've never had Eggplant Kimchi before, this was a special treat. The seafood pancake was crispy on the outside and soft inside. The Spicy Pork was seasoned perfectly and tender. The Kimchi fried rice was huge and perfectly textured and flavorful. Highly recommend! read more

We went to H-mart grocery then decided to have Korean food for lunch. We decided to try Grandma Noodle. It's a small, clean and cozy place. The staff was wonderful and friendly. Our food, seafood pancake, Kimchi fried trice and Bulgogi was excellent. Very yummy Recommend to others.... read more

The dough flakes and potato soup was actually rich in flavor due to the strong anchovy broth, which I liked. Even though it was mostly dough, broth, and veggies, it didn't taste like it was missing anything. The sliced zucchini, carrots, potatoes and onions added some texture. The dough pieces were thick and large. They reminded me a bit of pork rinds in soup since they soaked up some broth. The thinly sliced potatoes were well-cooked but didn't fall apart immediately when scooping. It reminded me of a light chowder. The seafood pancake was huge and crispy. Surprisingly, it didn't have a heavy oil flavor. It was full of batter (maybe more than some may like), carrot, onion, scallions and squid. The dumpling and rice cake soup has a similar broth but includes streams of egg, which I thought dulled the flavors. The banchan consisted of a variety of lightly pickled and spiced cucumbers (crispy but watery flavor), daikon (crunchy) and napa cabbage (not too sour or too sweet). In addition, there were sweet yellow radish and oil bean sprouts. The lady was nice and came by often to ask if we needed anything.
