I knew this place would be poppin' when I saw the 3.6 rating on Yelp (at the time of this review) with mostly non-Asian reviews, as well as seeing the owner doing paperwork on one of the dining tables - marks of a truly authentic Chinese restaurant. Do not sleep on the Sichuan food here (not the Chinese-American food)! Salt and pepper fish, eggplant & green bean, and Sichuan beef mala pot (very liquid-y but surprisingly good flavor) were all amazing. Chili oil dumplings had lots of filling, but I prefer thinner skins. Dan dan noodles were clumping together and didn't have peanuts so I don't recommend them. Dishes are about $10 per and portion sizes just about match; we got 3 entrees and 2 apps for 3 people and pretty much finished everything. Can't wait to come back! read more

Staff: ordering was weird, kinda felt like we just got stared at by the cashier. The runners and bussers seemed personable though. Food: bland, even the spicy. Portions were on the larger side. Price: for taste and type of food (we're not talking gourmet Chinese) it's expensive. The whole fam was in agreement, mid at best; we have plenty of other chinese places in the immediate vicinity that have better food for better price. I decided to order delivery Thursday night and found the $18 for hunan shrimp a little high but decided to order it anyway. I also ordered the beef fried rice as one reviewer mentioned their fried rice was really good. Unfortunately, I was thoroughly disappointed. The only veggies in my human shrimp were celery & bell peppers. There were no mushrooms, no baby corn, no carrots, and no greens whatsoever! Flavor was decent but their lack of vegetables while charging more than other restaurants felt like a bad joke. The $14 beef fried rice contained uncooked onion & was saturated in bean sprouts which I dislike and had not ordered if I was aware. The shrimp & beef quality was not the best either. My wife and I enjoyed our visit. We shared a large bowl of wonton soup that was very good. The only drawback was the undersized spoons. We enjoyed some fried egg rolls. I like eating mine with some sweet sauce and Chinese mustard....they didn't have any Chinese mustard, they did have some chili sauce. The cheese puffs were good. The iced coffee drink was very good with boba.. The combination lo mein was tasty and huge. They're a little pricier than i'm used to. This is located where Hunan Hut used to be. I initially visited Yaya Ricebox to claim the Buy One Entree, Get One Free Boba/Fried Rice deal that was going on for their grand opening. I ordered the Chicken Lo Mein and received a free Vegetarian Fried Rice with my order. The lo mein was cooked well with plenty of vegetables and chicken, and the noodles overall were hearty and came as a large serving for a great price. Even though my fried rice was free and vegetarian, it was actually one of the best restaurant fried rice I've ever had! The rice texture was amazing and the flavor was strong but not overpowering. Both dishes were not too oily and they both make great take-out and dine-in options. However, as a boba lover myself, I do not recommend the boba milk tea at all. The drink itself was decent but it tasted very sugary and sweet. The tapioca pearls were not made well and tasted overcooked and way too soft; that was my least favorite part of my drink. I definitely think there can be improvement on the boba drinks here, but I have not tried any of their other drinks aside from this one. The cashier that served me was very straightforward but he was patient with me when I took time to order. A lady who I believe was an owner was hovering behind him the whole time and it did make me feel a bit tense while ordering, but I understand that you would want to carefully supervise your newly launched business to ensure everything runs smoothly. The homestyle tofu was super flavorful and reminded me of some of the best meals I had when I studied aboard in China years ago. The fruit tea is packed with fruit and is refreshing. My friends, coworkers, and I were excited when YAYA Rice Box opened this year and couldn't wait to try it, but IMHO, it was a real disappointment. The photos they posted online, on nextdoor, and on this FREE STUFF group were honestly teasing! The pictures made it look fresh, vibrant, and flavorful, but we got the opposite. All five of us agreed: our meals were bland, served at room temperature, with small portions for the hefty price, dry rice, and chicken so tough it felt like jerky, pork was slimy (according to one of my colleagues) and the food's appearance contradicted what was posted here! Seriously ... And broccoli. No thank you The staff seemed rushed and uninterested, avoiding eye contact. When I asked about vegan options, the employee didn't seem to understand the difference between vegan and vegetarian, which made it hard for her to order safely. She ended up skipping a meal and only having a drink, which was disappointing for her and awkward for the rest of us. The dining area wasn't clean, which made us wonder about the kitchen. The tables and floors were sticky, and the bathroom was unacceptable. If the bathrooms and the dining area were unacceptable like this, I wonder what the kitchen and important areas looked like! To top it off, flies kept trying to join us at our table uninvited while we were eating. That was rude! Overall, YAYA Rice Box did not live up to expectations, and looking at other recent reviews, it seems we're not the only ones. I was hoping to support a new local spot, and maybe this review will encourage, the owners, to make improvements so people can feel comfortable having lunch with coworkers, family, and friends here. I look forward to seeing the city of Houston's food establishment inspection report! For now, though, there are many better spots in Houston where you can get fresh, clean, flavorful food, friendly service, and a clean environment for the same price or less. Do you know what sichuan pepper corns are? They do! I had the beef Mala Sichuan soup (with the lowest pepper level because I'm a wimp) and it was EXACTLY what I wanted. I was infused with warmth from the beef broth and tingling from the pepper corns. Just enough spiciness from the jalapeños (happy leños!) to make me sniffle without killing my taste buds. My wife had the Salt and Pepper Fish lunch and it was crispy, tasty, and salty like she wanted it. I personally think the green beans they serve with the lunch box are laced with something because she kept stabbing me with her chopsticks to keep me from stealing them from her. I came here around 3 PM on August 9, 2025. After I received an ad on my door for it. I was a bit excited since there's not many Chinese restaurants around my apartment especially right next door. I decided to go see what this place was about, customer service is just OK. The lady who initially saw me when I walked through the door didn't seem to speak English so she had to translate for me to wait just a moment on the next employee. Once the next employee came out, she really didn't seem as nice as the first lady no smile or anything. She had an AirPod in and was having a conversation with someone else on the phone while taking my order. I understand that there was no one in the restaurant when I arrived, but it seems she could've took it out to kindly help me place my order. I ordered the dumplings and the fried chicken. The dumplings were very good! However, the fried chicken is just OK. It seems to be lacking a great amount of seasoning. I tried to use the condiments that were given to me on the side to try to compensate for that, but it didn't work so well.
