When we arrived, there was no seating available. It is very small and lacking space. The people are nice. I seen a 1 or 2 people come back because there orders were not correct. We were running late because of the drive there and closet parking was very hard to find. After we got our orders, the food did not seem right. My friend ordered the seafood medley and the fish smelled bad even in the sauce. I ordered the steal tips. I thought it came with mashed potatoes and veggies. I got white and shredded veggies. The steak was the toughest and hard to chew. I got scared chewing on it for a minute or two. The first time I ordered steak and it was tougher than beef jerky. We came to this place for lunch while driving through Worcester. It was about 2:30pm on a Thursday, so the lunch crowd was gone by this time. What a wonderful find! The proprietors are lovely people and really care about sharing their culinary creations with their customers. We ordered sandwiches, and munched on some baked goods while we waited. The cookies were amazing. They brewed fresh ground coffee for my wife. The chef was also trying out a new ginger/carrot soup recipe and brought a cup over for us to try out - it was delicious! The variety and quality of food that comes out of the small kitchen is very impressive. My S.O. had the mahi-mahi (which was impressively presented with some rice and veggies and drizzled with sauce and red onions) and reported that it was very good. I had the burger and fries. This was a welcome break from the chain restaurants I encounter while traveling. Everything was fresh and homemade. The service was kind and as quick as can be. The atmosphere is nice though small, but the kitchen and counter area could be tidied a bit. I ate there twice and thoroughly enjoyed my food - fish sandwich on wheat, curried carrot soup (perfect for a cold windy evening). The place had lots of options for the vegetarian! My friend got the French onion soup and Thai chicken wrap. The prices were very reasonable too. It's very convenient to the Hanover Theatre as many have said. This fantastic place is the perfect example of 'don't judge a book by the cover' - it is teeny-tiny (although it does have back room too) and the pre-theatre menu seems quite limited, but don't let that fool you! A dear friend and I stopped in for dinner before seeing Late Night Catechism at the Hanover Theatre. We managed to snag 1 of the last 2 tables free (a high-top) right by the door. We were greeted and made to feel welcome immediately by the chef's wife and co-owner, Jeanette. After glancing at the one page menu we made our selections - my friend wanted to try this amazing-sounding Seafood Cannaloni that mentioned shrimp and lobster while I opted to try the Half Duck with an Asian glaze and we selected their Spring Salad to share. It's BYOB, which we didn't come prepared for, but no matter - the FOOD held all of our attention and then some! The salads were neatly split in the kitchen and came out in a goodly amount of time (I like that they don't stint on the bleu cheese crumbles, walnuts or craisins like some places do) and the addition of crisp, fresh (non-brown) slices of green apple made this the perfect starter. Our entrees arrived pretty soon thereafter (I was concerned because our Hostess did mention that the duck took the longest of all the menu items, but BOTH our entrees arrived without too much of a wait at all and nice and piping hot!) My friend's Cannaloni was absolutely bursting with chunks of shrimp & lobster, with a goodly amount of sauce (but not drowning in it). The pasta was perfectly al dente and there was some fresh parsley to add some green to the generous serving. Now to the best part of my visit. Without a doubt, this duck was the juiciest, most flavorful duck I've EVER tasted! It was tender, with a crisp & tasty skin. The Asian Glaze was just right, acting to enhance rather than to mask the flavor of this incredible dish! Oftentimes if you are served duck and it's still nice & hot, it's also DRY and stringy with very little duck flavor - NOT SO here! As you can see from my photo, the skin had this amazing golden brown color and it tastes even BETTER than the photo. The potato galettes on the side were flaky, buttery and just so tasty - they were the perfect accompaniment to the duck. Concentrating on the duck and pastry as I was, I do admit the vegetables were a bit of an afterthought, but on my part, not the Chef's! The Chef (Bill) came over moments after our plates arrived (I had to take a bite) and anxiously asked how we liked everything. I love that the Chef came right out, was friendly and genuinely wanted to know our thoughts! My only regrets? a) we did not bring a bottle of wine to enjoy with our dinner; b) we did not have time to try a dessert; and c) The Theatre Café is 30-45 minutes away from where I live! I would go there every WEEK to see what's on the ever-changing menu. HIGHLY RECOMMEND you check this place out - they are generally only open when the Hanover is open, but call ahead and you can try for a reservation - will most definitely do all in my power to get back to this place... read more

This is a lovely cafe, 1/2 block from The Hanover Theater. Its very small but along with that comes very personal service. They were as nice as can be when I called for info, and gladly took a table reservation. I had an omelot. I love a place that makes breakfast all day. Mom got a lobster roll- heavy on the lobster and light on the mayo. And my sister got a pulled pork sandwich which she said was great. No liquor license but it is BYOB and they will uncork for you. I recently made a visit at the Theatre Cafe for lunch. The owners are extremely friendly and go out of their way to serve you. The Cafe has only been open for about a year, but you wouldn't know it by the excellent service you receive there. They look like they've been serving for many years...... I ordered the Cafe Burger with homemade fries and a bottle of Diet Coke from the cooler. The Burger was great and the homeade fries were delightful, done the old-fashioned way. Although pretty small for dining (6-10 tables), and BYOB, the food is fantastic and I would most definately come back again! It's very convenient to the Hanover Theatre, and has some New England staples that I crave whenever I'm in the area; and they're done right, too! Must haves: Clam chowder, lobster roll, and lobster mac'n'cheese. The owners are fabulous, and even honored a special request for a baked good not normally found on the menu! It can be a little cramped around lunch so you may consider calling ahead if you are getting food to go. The atmosphere is low-key and no-frills but the establishment supports local artists and provides gallery space which is really nice to see. If you do call ahead to place an order around lunch time, be advised - the woman who answers the phone will be flustered and somewhat rude, as if they don't want the business, but this is most likely due to a combination of an overwhelming amount of orders being placed with just poor customer service. Pleasantly surprised! I stumbled on this place trying to catch a quick bite before a concert at The Hanover. I expected a sandwich and a bag of chips. Instead, I got mussels in garlic wine sauce and surf and turf (filet mignon with grilled shrimp). They were cooked to perfection! I didn't know I was going to a spot that was BYOB, but there was a package store down the street. My friend made the trek down and the bottle topped off our meal perfectly! Forgetable at best and one member of our party of 6 found hair in her salad. Two of us ordered the pan seared scallops, you get 5,room temperature scallops. My wife ordered haddock, also not hot and we all received the same infdescribable vegetable that the waitress really couldn't define either. We had reservations and were seated in a room separated from the main restaurant, which appears to be in an apartment building. The whole thing was very strange and not in a good way. There are plenty of quality restaurants a mile away on Shrewsbury St, so under no circumstances will we do a pre Hanover Theatre show dinner here again. Four of us made a reservation for a pre-dinner show. We had been here several times and it always great. Now they have reached a new level! From the amuse bouche (duck stuffed pasta) to the Caesar salad to entries and desert it was all wonderful! Everything is house made including all of the delicious sauces. I had tortellini stuffed with beef and veal, amazing. My brother in law had lamb and said it was the best he's ever had. My wife had the shrimp and was raving about it. This is not a fancy location and the seating might be a little tight but it's well worth it. The owners are a delight and they came to the table a couple of times. You'll love it. This restaurant was excellent. I was with a group of 7 people and everyone's food was outstanding. The scallops, lobster ravioli and salmon were all very generous portions and cooked perfectly. The sauces complimented the dishes but didn't overwhelm the flavor. Our servers,and I think owner, was so accommodating. The chef also came over to make sure we were happy. Don't miss dessert! My friend and I visited this restaurant for lunch several days ago. The restaurant was dirty, floors, and tables with unchanged black tablecloths. The unidentified "waitress/hostess" was glued to her phone. She finally asked if she could help us, but then quickly told us that our first two lunch choices, the tomato soup, and the chicken pot pie, were sold out. It was only 12:30 PM! The chicken salad was pasty and smooth in texture. The chicken wrap was oozing with dressing and was sloppy and unappealing. The place had an odor; a combination of burnt food and grease. The food was not good, the atmosphere was filthy, dark, and dingy. Certainly Worcester must have better to offer. We would never go back. The bathroom was clean. Fine, don't post it. This is a hidden gem. The food is always extraordinary. Take out during covid-19 is no exception. The menu included american, asian, italian, seafood. I had tempura shrimp stir- fry...it was excellent. Friends had seafood in an orange saffron sauce, and husband had a steak bomb sub. All were made with flavorful fresh ingredients. When not limited to takeout they have lamb, duck, and many more high end ingredients. You can't get near the place without an early reservation when there is a show. I was a long time fan of the theatre cafe until a recent experience. I had a big group which I know is tough for such a small space but I made a reservation months in advance. I stopped by in person to confirm my reservation closer to the evening and noticed that they crossed my name out and had another party in my place. I questioned this and they scrambled to get me back in. They requested we show up a few minutes earlier then originally requested, I had no issue with this. When my group showed up at the requested time they were not ready to seat us and we had to wait out on the sidewalk for a half hour until they finally seated us. When we were finally seated they gave us a complimentary appetizer, which was cold by the way, as an apology I'm assuming. I've yet to return. I'm looking forward to more dining options opening around the theatre. read more

Great food (but not fantasticly awesome), friendly service, but I personally think the prices are a little too high for everything. A $7.50 panini could be $6. A $4 smoothie could be $3. When I ordered a $5 bowl size soup, I was suprised since it looked like the cup size that was $4. I do recommend to go there anyway. The brownies are TO DIE FOR!!! Bill and Jeanette are the owner-operators of this boutique-style little restaurant. They do a booming business when there is a show at the Hanover Theatre, thus the name. The food is wonderful, as is the service. Bill cooks up a great meal at a fair price. Last time I had a perfectly seared salmon with a mango salsa that had a little kick to it yet was very refreshing. Their chicken parm is also great. They have a three course meal that is only 2 for $25 and it includes soup or salad, entree and a small dessert. This special is M-F, I think, but if there is a show, make a reservation. We often see parties being turned away on show night, so go early and make a reservation. Oh, did I mention the cafe is a BYOB restaurant, making it a great choice for a cost effective girls' night out. My husband and I are regular customers. We love it here.
