Been going there since it opened, still visit whenever I'm in town. The Pickle Barrel has been around for 50 years now. That's some accomplishment in modern times. We went there almost daily in the early-mid 70s for lunch. My favorite was the scallops on Friday, these are not heavily breaded, and have a unique taste. Another is the corned beef hash on Thursdays. The antipasto salad is great and the corn muffins are the best around. Gus is still running the place - he was a "junior" way back when I first started going. I'm glad he has kept it running and expanded it over the years. whenever I'm in Worcester, I go there, and my sisters still go once in a while. It has a hometown atmosphere, which is great being that Worcester is my home town. There have been many, many servers / waitresses there and all have been excellent. read more

First time we've been here. It was good. Service here is very good. The waitresses have been there a long time. They're very friendly. Always happy to help. My wife got the pancakes special. She tells me the pancakes are "the best she's ever had." Very fluffy and flavorful. I had the Pickle Barrel Omelette. It has sausage, feta, tomatoes, onions and peppers. Mine was average, at best. The home fries needed seasoning, badly. The omelette was good. Mainly carried by the feta. We did agree on the coffee: not favorably. It "delivered the goods," but it wasn't very good. Have been coming here for years (and will continue to do so), and for good reason. Menu is typical deli/diner food, but always very delicious and at an excellent price. All day breakfast is always a good choice, as are the sandwiches. I usually get a Cheeseburger Special with spicy fries (always get spicy fries - they're not hot spicy, just have more flavor than regular fries). Staff is always very friendly. If there is ever an issue with your order, they fix it right away. Definitely check out Pickle Barrel when in Worcester. I don't think you will be disappointed. read more

Went there for the first Time for a Sunday morning breakfast. Let me tell you it will be my first and last time. I entered and I was greeted by a nice man who I think was the owner. I went and sat down. Now I understand it was busy, but not one waitress acknowledged me in at least 15 minutes. I waived down a waitress and asked if I could order. She said that I could not order from her because she was not my waitress but she would give me coffee and water while she found my waitress. I said ok. Another 5 minutes passed. At this point I was ready to just leave. But since i had coffee I didn't. I got up and talked to the owner guy and told him that I'd been here forever and still had not got my order. He raised hell and then my waitress finally arrived. I ordered an egg white omelette which is 2 dollars more expensive than a regular omelette which i understand. What i didn't understand was there was barely any egg white in my omelette. Was the worst omelette in history of omelettes. If it wasn't for the flavorless home fries that cost an extra $2.99, (who does that), I would have left hungry. Anyway. Horrible place. I have lived in the area for a couple years now, yes it's a tough neighborhood sort of, oh well, I'm thrilled to be able to walk up street for the MOST delicious breakfast at rock bottom prices. It is packed on weekend mornings, but that tells you right there your getting ready to have a yummmy breakfast. Pancakes are so good and huge!They also DELIVER breakfast, nothing like having eggs and bacon and homefries with a HUGE belgium waffle with fruit on top that everyone can share delivered to your door when no one wants to cook breakfast. Home cooked food at its best. The waitress was very nice. She brought a special sippy cup for my son and was friendly. The food came fast. Toaster broke and she was still able to get the toast out soon after, but we had enough food to hold us over. They carried our stroller in the back for us so it was not in our way also. We went in at lunch time and the place was busy. However we found ample seating. Everyone seemed to know each other yet we still felt welcomed. The menu had do many choices. I went with a chicken finger wrap with fries. I got the spicy fries to give them a try. The wrap was big and well wrapped. The veggies were crisp and fresh. Wow! Absolutely loved this place! First of all the service was super nice, everyone seemed very friendly and felt like I was walking into a good friends home. Very welcoming! I have been here twice for breakfast and both times were excellent. The first visit I had a breakfast wrap with egg and feta and some other veggies and not only was it delicious, it also was more than enough food, not even including the homefries it came with. The second time I got a Belgian waffle which was also delicious. My boyfriend was excited that they served chicken and waffles. The food is good, the service is friendly, the atmosphere is nice (usually busy as well) and the food was inexpensive with great portions. My date had the everything omelet with homefries and toast, which was delicious, even have leftovers for 2nd breakfast, while I enjoyed the corned beef hash with 2 over medium homefries and toast. The corned beef hash is THE ABSOLUTE BEST in the city in my opinion. Service was quick, our server was very attentive and treated us like family. Great food and people! Always a smile. I worked in a very nice restaurant for 5 years in California. Clean, healthy food. The Pickle Barrel reminds me of that restaurant. Very kind, friendly owner (Gus) and waitresses, cooks... They talk to you, hold a conversation. They treat customers as a vital part of the neighborhood. Seniors, disabled and the homeless are also treated with respect. Fast service. Often is busy; this is due to the food being fresh, tastes great, large portions. Honestly, this place is surreal. We waited forever to get any service, then I had to ask for a lunch/dinner menu. After we were done with our menus, they took them away for some reason, despite them leaving the breakfast menus there? I was excited they had liver and onions, but then they brought it out and it seemed like they'd poured literally an entire salt shaker onto it, and it was so overcooked it just tasted like salty chalk. The driest, saltiest thing I'd ever eaten. The sides were mashed potatoes and corn, but the corn was obviously canned, and I'm fairly certain the mashed potatoes came out of a box. The gravy was terrible, probably also canned. Normally I wouldn't even mind that things like those came from a package or mix, but absolutely no thought went into its preparation, and there's no way my kidneys and arteries are thanking me for even attempting to eat that much sodium. Even when it is crowded the service is prompt and quality consistent. But, this past Friday, being 'Good Friday', the place was packed; the staff was out-straight: and still friendly smiles with great service and meals. They certainly live up to their motto.
