This was my second time visiting Chanis Deli, this time I brought someone that loves Rueben's and I thought it would be fun experience. First of all when we went to the counter to order the only person there was on a telephone call and it was a bit of an awkward wait, but we ordered. My guest wasn't impressed by the Rueben and I got the pastrami and it was ridiculously fatty...like big hunks of fat I pulled out. Amazingly, this kind of place does exist on Newton Avenue in Worcester. So, let me welcome you to Chan's Kosher Deli. Enter through the back door of the synagogue and you'll be in the sanctuary, but one of the firs things you'll see is an ordering counter with prepared foods in the showcase. We were greeted by a bearded jolly Rabbi who reminded me of Tevye from Fiddler on the Roof. He warmly welcomed us, went through the menu and took our order. And what a menu they have! Deli meat and salmon by the pound, your classic Kosher deli sandwiches, like pastrami, corned beef, salami, brisket, chopped liver, plus chicken, knishes, latkes, and of course matzah ball soup. We split a corned beef sandwich ($17.95), and I ordered a cup of the soup ($6). The sandwich was loaded with corned, piled high on fresh rye bread and served with a pickle, a side of cole slaw and little containers of mustard, Russian dressing, and garlic mayo. The sandwich was great, the meat was tender and juicy and full of flavor, the bread was very good, and the portion size justified the price. We split it between us, and it was plenty for a lunch. Honestly, I was a bit disappointed with the soup which I felt was bland, flavorless and very fatty. But the matzah ball itself was awesome! Big and delicious. Overall, we really loved our visit to this unique restaurant that uses their revenue to support their summer camp program for local children. read more

Just when I had given up hope of finding a great Jewish deli, we were recommended to come here. Service is great but can get a little backed up due to the volume Ambiance, not much to talk about but the place is clean and the people are pleasant. But, those sandwiches. Enough for two meals and done right. Piled high. But it's not just a lot. It's a lot and good. Some folks make up for slop with big servings. These folks make great stuff and give you a bunch. Best corned beef sandwich I've had in years. Very flavorful and tender. The rye bread was delicious . Coleslaw was fresh and tasty, not soggy. The pickle was a bit bland for my taste but is a typical Jewish deli pickle. read more

If I could 4.5-4.9 stars I would. Best pastrami on rye I have had in two years. Meat was appropriately fatty--perfect. With a semi-sour pickle and a Dr. Brown Cel-Ray soda, this was a perfect lunch. The Rabbi who took our order was informative and a bit of a comedian. The deli is in the Synagogue, so the ambiance was a bit different than any other place I have been. Check it out. read more

It is a bit strange to walk into a church sanctuary to go to a deli, but that is exactly what this is. The service is friendly but (in my experience) confused and slow. I think the worker in the kitchen was new, and I don't think she spoke English and the orders were getting confused. The price was high for the amount of food I got. But, it was very tasty! They have tables and chairs set up, napkin dispensers on the tables. It was a fun find. Doubtful I will go here again. read more

What a disappointing, strange place to have a deli, however, some of the best restaurants are in a church or synagogue. The food was definitely not worth the trip. I ordered the pastrami and it was mostly all fat. I understand pastrami is a fatty meat, however, some meat would have been appreciated. The matzo ball soup was a bust as it had no flavor at all. Wow this was a pleasant surprise. Unbelievable kosher food at a fair price. It's not a restaurant so don't get confused lol. Chani's is located in the synagogue in a residential neighborhood. You are in the right place! We had the pastrami sandwich the description said something about it being the good fatty pastrami. They did not lie. The pastrami was delicious! Perhaps the best I've had. We also had salads and kougle everything was delicious but the pastrami was the stand out. Excellent food and service. I had the "The Newton Ave" sandwich and really loved it. It was a very thickly packed sandwich and very moist and I ate the whole thing without even drinking water. So, it was very enjoyable and not dry like many other places serve it. Caramelized onions and sauce made it delicious. I will be dreaming about it until one day soon when I go back for more. On the side I had the Potato Kugel and that was great too, I almost thought it was Shabbos again. For dessert I had the Chocolate Chip cookie, and it was simple, yet a perfect ending to the lunch.
