Great food, drinks. Down home cookin. Kids play area. Good service except one girl. We've been here many many times.

Decided to try this place I saw on Facebook. Very nice decor as you walk in & hosts had smiling faces and took us to our table. The waitress took longer than I expected, but when she got there she was very nice. Our table included myself, my husband & our 19 year old we ere taking back to college. We all had the full brunch buffet and the food was good. There was a great variety of items well worth the price! But, the reason for the rating was because of were we were sitting. I love the fact they have a play room! It's something I would have definitely taken advantage of when my children were young. But, this completely ruined our experience. The host sat us next to the playroom and it was very loud. I think they should implement a process where if you walk in with small children you sit in that area, but if you don't walk in with small children they can seat you in a different section. We were unable to fully enjoy brunch with our daughter before we dropped here off. read more

Finally went here on a Saturday night when we missed the window at 2 other nearby eateries and the wait was too long with the kiddos. We've been wanting to try this place since it's old location and had no more excuses. We surprisingly got right in, even though the place was fairly crowded. Nice big place with a cool looking bar area. I had high expectations for this place and it kind of let me down (a little). Most kid-friendly place in the city! We love the kids' playroom because we can sit down near the doorway and have a meal while our kids play. Sure, it might not be the cleanest but it's way cleaner than a McDonalds' playground! We love the American comfort food too. Waiters are always patient and friendly. read more

Unfortunately, I've been spoiled by places that take the standard fare to another level and as I want to support my neighborhood businesses, I really wanted to love The String Bean. Comfort food satisfaction! I have had the chicken fried steak and chicken fried chicken, both are delicious!!! I have also had the tilapia and salmon, if you're looking for something lighter then that's the way to go. The portions size is huge. A average size girl can't finish the full meal so nice to have something for dinner later :-) Fridays they serve chicken and dumpling, OMG soooo yummy! Don't miss out on that one! read more

My twin sister and I decided to have a belated birthday celebration with our family April 2, 2014. We chose The String Bean because the staff makes you feel like family and the food is wonderful. My father became unresponsive during dinner. We thought he was dying. Every member of that staff rushed to our aid. Dakota was a quiet force in all the chaos and kept us calm and assisted our dad until the paramedics arrived. I'm tearing as I write this. I'm so grateful to everyone there. They treated us as if we were their own family. I haven't words enough to express my gratitude. They went above and beyond as they always do in the course of normal business. My husband and I visited tonight as we are staying in the area from out of town. We sat in Alison's (sp?) section who I highly recommend you request. She answered several of our questions and was very warm and friendly. The food was spot on. I had pot roast, black-eyed peas, and okra. My husband had meatloaf, mashed potatoes, and greens. It was all delicious and I would definitely recommend! We will need back any time we come back to Richardson. read more

I've lived in Dallas for 2 1/2 years and sadly this was the worst food I've had in the city. Everything tasted like it came from a frozen box. I ordered the open pot roast sandwich which was served with mashed potatoes that were watery and tasted instant. The actual roast was ok. My MIL had the chicken fried steak which she said tasted like it came from a freezer box. read more

Stopped by for lunch Sunday. I had the tortilla soup and some veggies. Soup was very good and I love their squash. My husband has the open faced pot roast sandwich. Beef was excellent and the gravy was very tasty. Just a good meal as always! read more

My friends and I went to the Thanksgiving buffet. The food was delicious. There were several vegetable offerings and all the white turkey meat you could eat. We were very pleased and will be back next year. read more

I've eaten at two of the three previous locations for The String Bean. This new location was indeed a pleasant surprise. The updated decor was a nice step up from the previous locations. In an age when restaurants seem to constantly invent themselves and change their menus constantly, it was very nice to find that The String Bean tasted the same as it has for 25 years. It was like going home after a long time away. If you are looking for good homestyle cooking in the North Dallas/Richardson area, it is really hard to beat this restaurant, and the location is easy to find from both 161 and 75. The prices are always reasonable and the service is always friendly; a true tribute to a family owned and run restaurant where the staff truly care about doing a good job. That is something so difficult to find in restaurants in the same genre. The pot roast is tender and juicy. The REAL mashed potatoes are unbeatable. read more

I absolutely love this place!! Me and my boyfriend have gone twice in the past two days! It's great home cooking meals and is so fresh and flavorful. The homemade tortilla soup is so amazing, and I have never even really liked tortilla soup but my boyfriend had it and I tried it and now I'm obsessed with it. The pot roast with mashed potatoes and brown gravy is my favorite and the string beans of course!!! So amazing I will be back again and again :) read more

PAPER THIN 'fried catfish.' There was more breading than fish. Some pieces were so hard I couldn't eat them. What a waste of $10.

One of our favorites that we keep coming back to. Very casual with a clientele that trends older, but the food is consistently good and reasonably priced. You won't find a friendlier staff anywhere. We visiting the new Campbell location this past weekend. It has a more open feeling than the prior Colt / Spring Valley location. There was a wait on this Friday night so we sat at the bar and had a nice meal and a couple of drinks. The bartenders were very friendly as well as the fellow patrons at the bar. They served me a burnt burger with stale lettuce. The waitress was horrible -not clean, forgot things, The food in general was not good-was not fresh, the place was filthy and i got sick from eating that burger. I had gone there before, about a dozen times, but I am not going there again ever. read more

This is what a home cooking restaurant is supposed to taste like. Nothing fancy, but everything good. They do home cooking the way you want to, but don't want to take the time. If you have children, this is quite possibly the most family friendly restaurant in all of Dallas. read more

The String Bean is a place to get decent food for moderate prices. The atmosphere is great, but the food was just ok. Ordered chicken fried steak that was ok, and we also ordered the tilapia. If there is one thing to get here get the tilapia!!! It was awesome. Coconut creme pie wasn't what we expected...Overall I would go back but would definitely not go out of my way to eat here. Very difficult lunch with friends last Thursday. A group of folks that I used to work with a lot of years ago, get together once a year for lunch. We met there last Thursday, about seven of us. The food of my friends looked good enough but the grilled chicken I had was a bit dry and for some reason the chef found it necessary to pile two pounds of slightly steam vegetables on the plate as well. Oh well, I was there for my friends. I grabbed the check and told the waiter to put a 20% gratuity on the check. He came back ten minutes later and gleefully announced that my card had been declined. BS! I immediately took him back to the credit card terminal and asked him to swipe the card and not use the chip. Lo and behold as if by magic the transaction went through. The chip had gotten damaged and only the stripe worked. I asked the manager to have a word with the waiter and I left. Never to return. The whole situation was the result of poor management. Good ole southern comfort food! Yep, the atmosphere was pleasant, the noise level was perfect for visiting. The hostess at the door was quite hospitable and our waitress, Michele, was friendly, pleasant, cheerful, energetic and most attentive. The catfish I ordered was delicious and fried perfectly. Others at our table raved about their chicken fried steak which was a nice tender, thick cut and not over battered. The squash and green beans were nicely seasoned and were cooked to perfection, not over cooked. The mashed potatoes were smooth, hot and buttered. Fresh yeast rolls and tasty cornbread appeared before our meal was served and we feasted on them! We were about to leave, had already paid, when the Boston Cream Cake caught our eyes . We hailed our waitress, Michele, and told her we changed our minds and ordered a piece to share and coffee. I live in Mesquite, but had heard this restaurant advertised on KCBI radio station and it sounded so good I wanted to give it a try. All in my party agreed that we WILL be returning for great food but especially, the best Chicken Fried Steak around Dallas. read more

I have lived in the area most of my life and have been aware of The String Bean for many years. I have heard many good things about the food here. My father had been to the old location in the past and was hungry for some southern cooking last night. So we ended up at the new location off Campbell Rd. This was my first visit so my opinion is based solely on this first experience. We were greeted warmly and seated right away. It was not crowded and yet we were seated in a corner with the back of my chair less than a foot away from some other diners. We asked for the next table along the wall and were seated with no problem. My parents are elderly and ordered the senior versions of meatloaf and chicken strips along with there veggies and a dinner salad to share. For myself I am a bit of a foodie and sometimes like to ask the waitstaff what they prefer between my top three choices. In this instance I was looking at the Mandarin Pork Roast, the Montreal Mushroom Chopped Steak and the Fried Chicken Breast. Our waitress suggested that the chicken was her favorite and was the largest portion as well as getting it pan fried instead of deep fried. That is pretty much was I was wanting so I got that with mashed potatoes and fried okra. When the food was served I kind of thought that they gave me the senior plate as well. The chicken breast was for the most part about 1/8th of an inch thick (breading and all). Now I can talk how I liked the food. The chicken was my favorite on the plate. A bit of a small portion but seasoned well not over cooked which could have been easy to do considering how thin it was. The mashed potatoes were mediocre and bland but helped along by the brown gravy. The fried okra - well it was fried okra - at least it was not soggy. I didn't care for the roll but I did like the corn bread and took a couple pieces home. I love iced tea and hate it when I get a glass that tastes like they haven't cleaned out the brewer in a month. Here, the iced tea was good - tasted fresh. Service was a tad slow - we had to get the attention of the staff for drink refills. The waitress was very nice and perhaps new to the job. When she came to clear the plates and check on out dessert preference my father said he would like to see a menu in order to decide. About 20 minutes later she came back and asked if we needed anything else. The problem with that is that when I mentioned that she forgot to bring a menu for my Dad to decide on dessert he had already decided against it. So that was a lost sale for them. Over all I liked this first visit and i will try it once again to see if it improves. There are just a few things which should be tightened up before I give them another star. read more

I went here recently with a friend and ordered lasagna while she had pot roast. The lasagna was very unique. The sauce wasn't too sweet like some restaurants make it but it definitely wasn't grandma's recipe. It was average, but the garlic bread was horrendously burned. The salad tasted a little odd. My friend's pot roast was bland and almost inedible if it weren't for gravy. The cornbread and mashed potatoes are delicious. The serving staff is attentive and very friendly. It was $25 for both of us to eat, which I found a bit too expensive for the quality of the food. read more

I've never had a chicken breast that chewed like gristle and I hope I never do again. But hey, the cornbread was great.

Chicken fried steak was lukewarm. IHOP's version is better Veggies were ok, served warmed. Mashed potatoes were touted as "real", but it wasn't creamy. Gravy was bland, and this was brown gravy. Fries were not warm, needed salt. For the price point, I guess I should give it 3/5 stars, however, I've been to places that priced their main dishes $2-3 more but were much better. read more

I go here a lot, I'd give it 3.5 stars overall. I didn't like the breakfast brunch on Sunday, which was odd. I just didn't like how they cooked the eggs, but everyone else loves it so it might be me. But the chicken fried steak, chicken fried chicken, all that is wonderful. The breading is obviously done in house and is more like you'd find in the deep South. Nobody else's around here does theirs this way. It's great. Staff is always friendly and there's free wi-fi. I've never had any service issues with them, it's always been excellent. read more

Pretty good home style food. I came here with the family as it is close to my mother in-law's residence. They had burgers and fries and I had chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and okra and we had assorted beverages like margaritas, beers and other cocktails. They have an extensive cocktail list. The food was pretty good although the chicken fried steak was sort of small. The only complaint we had was that our food was not real warm when it came out and I mean, none of it was hot out of our 3 meals. I sent mine back for reheating and I think they nuked it, which made it a little better. My husband and his mom just ate theirs the way it was because they didn't want everything to be soggy after a reheat. Even the fries were not just fried and piping hot which was disappointing. When you don't eat fries and burgers a lot you want it to be hot and tasty and just fresh made. Our server was very nice and we will probably try it again and just ask for our food to be hot when it comes out. read more

I love the food and the atmosphere at String Bean. I have been eating here for years. Not just at the old location on Coit Road but way back when they were just off Central Expressway at Sprigvalley. It is just great home cooking something you expect to find at grandmas house. Last Sunday for lunch I had the grilled chicken and my girlfriend had grilled cheese and fried string beans. If you haven't had the fried string beans you should try them they are great. I am giving the restaurant an excellent review because I cleaned my plate with a smile but I should warn you they fall short in one category. The waitresses don't clear trash and empty plates until you are finished. I thought it was just our waitress but I noticed tables around us were cluttered with dirty dishes. I should have said something but it became a joke. We left trash on the end of the table hoping she would take it but time and time again she would fill our tea glasses or bring an appetizer and the trash pile was growing. We took pictures of the little pile of trash after our appetizer, after our meal, and again after we paid our check. Our waitress was providing good service but she didn't even consider that the trash was on the end of the table so she would clear it. Despite the table not being cleared frequently enough for us we loved the food atmosphere and even our waitress. read more
