Well for starters, let me say that it was my first time trying this place and the actions of the staff gave a very bad first impression. After we were seated, it was like we disappeared. No one came to our table at all. There were barely any people there so I don't think they could say they were too busy. We sat there and said we would give it a little bit longer but that didn't work either. The final straw was when we counted 3 other parties that were seated after us that received immediate attention. We just kindly got up and walked out. The hostess at the door came out as we were walking to the car and asked if there was a problem and I told her YES....told her what happened and told her to have a nice day. I just wanted some good southern cuisine and thought I would try a new place...that didn't turn out so well, so I drove to another restaurant that was not too far away (Norma's Cafe) and had a very pleasant experience and delicious food. All I can say is the String Bean needs to do better...they need to recognize that everyone needs to be treated the same. A restaurant is a place for all people to be served...not just the ones that look like you. read more

Wow this place sure has gone done hill since its previous locations. Two years ago I would have sung the praises of this place. Now, not so much. Two years ago the service was top notch and the food was great. Perhaps they have new management or new owners. I understand it's a home style restaurant and I don't expect gourmet food but I also don't expect something very similar to steakums in my roast beef. The food barely gets a "meh". Barely. Last week a couple of friends and I decided to meet there for dinner. Hey, I hadn't been in for about 7 months, so I thought, "Why not!" Well, I should have thought, "NOT". I noticed when I FINALLY got in, all the employees were having a good time clowning around in the back. First sign of trouble, the service is awful. The employees seem to care little to none about the customer's experience. The last time I was in there they were playing hardcore rap music on the pa system with cuss words, and they claim to be a kid friendly place? So...my friends ordered the daily special and myself the pot roast. The meals were lukewarm. One bite told me the food was not cooked correct. I mean if you are going to "feature" a special, you should know how to cook it right? I asked our waitress to speak with the manager, and she acted like it was a nuisance. I should have just got him myself, but he was too busy holding up the bar. When the manager finally came to our table and said, "What's the matter?" I explained the daily Special was terrible, and we would like to order something else. He told me it was made exactly like the receipt called for, and there was nothing he could do. Like that was supposed to make me happy to hear that! I again showed him the nasty food. He then asked me, "Well, What's wrong with your drinks." I replied, "Nothing that a refill wouldn't solve.", "I just wanted something eatable." He grabbed the receipts, left for a couple of minutes, then returned to the booth with a green "punch card" for $8 off our next meal. ( I guess that is what he figured my troubles were worth.) He never said, "Would you like to choose something else from the menu?", or "I'm so sorry you are unhappy with the food. May I remake it for you?." He just put the card on the table and walked away, back to his spot, "at the bar". The food has become incredibly inconsistent and usually a portion of the menu is not available for one reason or another. The past 3 times the orders where wrong and the employee seemed bothered that I had an issue with being brought something other than what I ordered. I could go on and on, but I won't. Bottom line, I won't be back and you should find another place to go I immediately emailed the company regarding the problem, and later that afternoon I received a reply from the owner of the Richardson business. She was somewhat apologetic, and offered us two free entrees, and two free drinks. However, Mrs Owner...you could have offered me a dozen free meals and I STILL WOULD NOT GO BACK. Nobody cares in that restaurant from the uninterested cashier/order taker, to the manager. Shame, shame, shame. Excuse Me, but this restaurant needs to close its doors. Glory days are finally over! First off, I love my mom. Shes a strong, loving, kind woman. Shes tough, she takes care of those who need taking care of with a kind touch. But she can't cook. ( And, thankfully, is totally computer illiterate ). So when I normally find a restaurant that is of the "Home Cookin'" variety, I get a cold chill. Visions of bread that you could play basketball with. Meatloaf with the consistency and flavor of pea gravel. But the kids and I wanted something different and we found ourselves walking in the door. Nice space, nothing that required a name architect, but as I've said before I could care less what the place looks like. Seating was quick, friendly. Specials were pointed out on the board and the waiter was introduced. John, the waiter, was excellent. Efficient, funny but not lingering, quick and responsive. Addressed the kids as Ma'am and Sir, which caused giggles. Meatloaf with fried okra and mashed potatoes here. Good flavor ( not pea gravel! ) and nicely done. Could have been a bigger portion, but thats just a marginally pudgy American talking. Son had the Chicken Fried Steak with Mashed Potatoes and Mac and Cheese ( enough starch to eliminate the need for ironing forevermore). John called it the Nap Creator. My son approved. Daughter had, to the surprise of no one, a burger. She loved it. Good food, great service, clean location. We'll be back. Definitely. But I'm not taking mom. Salt in the wounds and all. read more

Most everything on the menu is fried, but that isn't a bad thing if you're craving southern home cooking. I ordered the pan fried chicken breast with brown gravy on the side, roasted corn and mashed potatoes with corn bread and my group ordered the fried string beans and straws and caps (fried jalapens and onions) for an appetizer with jalapeno ranch and avocado ranch. Though most everything we ordered was fried, it wasn't greasy or heavy which made it great. We left satisfied and the server was attentive. read more

In short, this place is a total dump. I went here with family, and I hope I never have to suffer through it again. Everything is old and falling apart, and not in the charming kind of way. The service was a joke! We were there nearly two hours. Our waiter had to be told everything twice. Perhaps he ought to lay off the pot a little bit. Being a typical southern restaurant, the menu doesn't appear very vegetarian friendly, so I asked about vegetarian options. I was really surprised to hear that they had a 'vegetarian menu'. When I finally got to see it (20 minutes later, after I had to ask again), it consisted of salad, a limited vegetable selection (most have pork in them), fettuccine and a grilled cheese sandwich. I hadn't had any breakfast, so I really wanted something with substance. My husband and I both ordered the fettuccine. Fifteen minutes later (????) the waiter comes back and says, sorry, we don't carry that anymore. Wonderful. So I end up settling for the 'spinach salad'. Salad. You'd think that's pretty hard to screw up, but they managed to make a pretty crappy one. I love spinach, but I don't consider eating a bag of spinach with some shredded cheddar, a few canned olives, and 3 tiny cherry tomatoes to be a good meal. Even the dressing was pretty much flavorless. When I saw everybody else's food, it looked disgusting, but they seemed to like it. I will say that the cornbread (when we finally got it) was good. My husband ended up eating some fish dish he said was good, but not great. The service continued to be slow and crappy through out the meal. My husband had to get up and hunt down the waiter to get more drinks. I had such an unenjoyable experience that I was really irritable by the time we left. I definitely do NOT recommend this place, unless perhaps you're a single 65 year old on the prowl. You might score a date here, because that seemed to be the majority of the crowd. read more

I was really hopeful of this place. I love comfort food and nothing in here comforted me. Server started off pretty quick and brought us our drinks relatively fast, but service tapered off big time. We sat and waited for quite a long time. We asked for rolls and the server told us they can only bring it with our meal. Big disappointment. Not a lot of flavor. Why hasn't anyone thought of this before?!?!? A restaurant perfect for young families that isn't a fast food chain! When we walked in, the waitress looked at my 1-year-old and asked us if we'd like to sit next to the play room. Play room? Yes! Then they wheeled out a high chair for us and presented my son with a sippy cup with whole milk, a disposable bib, a coloring page, crayons, a single moist wipe, a kids menu, and plastic cutlery. A short time after coloring, he toddled over to the playroom filled with toddler toys, a little kitchen, and bean bag chairs and a little TV playing Disney for the older kids. When my son toddled in, he found two little girls about 8 years old who were thrilled to have a baby they could "mother" while my husband and I ate our dinner. Free babysitters! It was the first dinner out we have had as a family that we all enjoyed. Usually my son will only sit in his high chair for about 15 minutes before I'm chasing him all around a restaurant, and my husband and I can't have a adult conversation, and my son just wants to leave, but this wasn't the case. As for the food, it's really good comfort food. The chocolate cobbler for dessert was absolutely amazing. I wasn't too impressed with the macaroni and cheese side (and little mushy/goopy) but the fried okra was really good. read more

Wow. Just wow. Immensely terrible. Everything tasted bland and almost like if it was of a can. You know, I try to support local businesses and eat accordingly. Either it was cooked badly, or they pulled it out of a can. Canned foods are done by corporations...it just defeats the purpose of a home style cooking, right?? Do Lubys or something. So, this place crawls with bad decor and grime...cleaning staff needs to be fired. Wattress was super friendly and best part of the experience. This place is comparable to black eyed pea with a more homey mom and pop kinda feel. The service is extra friendly and the food is all American. We split the chicken fried steak had the fried string bean appetizer and a the famous coconut cream pie that we really didn't care for it all came out to 22 bucks. Really poor service. It took 15 minutes just to get our bread to the table and it wasn't busy. Our waiter barely talked or attended the table. I ordered a salad, the menu said it had kale in it, it didn't. I brought it up to the manager and she was defensive about it. I'll never come here again. Started going to String Bean in the 80s as an elementary school kid when it was on Arapaho. Recently went to their new location on Campbell. Definitely more of an upscale feel to it but glad to say much of the menu remains and the food is as good as I remembered. Last night me and my daughter decided to find a nice homey place to enjoy dinner. We chose The String Bean. What a great decision. The food,( I had my usual veggie plate) was fantastic. My daughter chose the pork chops, mac and cheese and greans. It was sooo good. The wait person was of exceptional quality. Very friendly we felt right at home, even tho we had not visited The String Bean since it was on Spring Valley. Are we going back...you betcha! Love it, love it. The food here is the closest thing to a home cooked meal if that is what you're looking for the service is always great, the bartenders are very attentive. They have the BEST coconut cream pie I've ever had in my life. I make the 20 minute drive just to have a slice of pie. You won't be disappointed at all. My order of two fried catfish filets was supposed to be two 4-5 ounce filets. One may have met the 4 oz but just barely. The second one was hidden under the first one and was mostly paper thin and was not even close to being 4 oz. I complained to the waiter and he was very unconcerned. We had Sunday brunch here. Do NOT waste your money! The food was lukewarm....powdered eggs, dry biscuits and muffins. Chicken fried steak was inedible. The most flavorful selection was the gelatinous chicken and dumplings. I grabbed a handful of mints on the way out the door to justify the $30 we donated to them. Decided to try this place I saw on Facebook. Very nice decor as you walk in & hosts had smiling faces and took us to our table. The waitress took longer than I expected, but when she got there she was very nice. Our table included myself, my husband & our 19 year old we ere taking back to college. We all had the full brunch buffet and the food was good. There was a great variety of items well worth the price! But, the reason for the rating was because of were we were sitting. I love the fact they have a play room! It's something I would have definitely taken advantage of when my children were young. But, this completely ruined our experience. The host sat us next to the playroom and it was very loud. I think they should implement a process where if you walk in with small children you sit in that area, but if you don't walk in with small children they can seat you in a different section. We were unable to fully enjoy brunch with our daughter before we dropped here off. read more

I really wanted to love this place, but it was just okay. A group of three of us went on a weeknight to enjoy some good eats and good company. They have a lovely patio, and we greatly enjoyed that! Unfortunately, our meals were just okay. The other two ladies had pot roast that was served barely warm and sort of left them with an "eh?" and I had sausage that I felt was easily obtainable at krogers for far less money than I paid for the meal. However, the cornbread was delicious. I might actually consider going back for cornbread and beverages. Plus, a friend SWEARS we were there on an off night, so it's possible. Overall, not bad, just not good. There is no reason I wouldn't go back and try again-- the waitress was nice, the food we got was edible, and the locals swear by it.
