Solid, standard country food. the interior is open and inviting with a bar and a small patio area outside as well (for times of year when it isn't almost 90F in the evening). We started with the fried green bean app which was pretty good, nothing spectacular. the portion was a little on the small side for the price, I think. 5/6 of us got The Big Texan and everyone was pretty happy with it. The batter was crispy, the portion substantial, the meat tender and well-cooked. The sides were all good for the most part. I was happy to see that they made note of which veggies were prepared with pork. The steamed broccoli was nice and crisp, not overcooked at all, which was great because it often is. It didn't have anything in the way of seasoning, though. The yellow squash was also just... boiled squash. it wasn't bad, per se, but it wasn't anything to write home about. The macaroni had really good flavor, lots of cheddar. The cheese sauce could use a little love texture-wise, but it was still better than stuff out of a box or made with some sort of "processed cheese-like product". I got the grilled tilapia with "tropical seasoning" which comes with either tartar or cocktail sauce, neither of which sounded appetizing so I opted to get it plain. it was served over rice with a lime. The fish was well-cooked but didn't have a ton of flavor, which is probably okay if you dunk it in sauce, I guess, but it doesn't really stand on it's own. The rice had bits of onion and bell pepper was flavorful but a bit salty for my taste. the portion size was quite generous. The rolls they bring out are quite good. The dinner rolls are soft and made with at least part wheat flour. The cornbread squares are tasty but a bit on the sweet side and very fluffy for cornbread, not grainy and crumbly like I'm used to. It just seems like there isn't much actual cornmeal in it. We got 3 different desserts - the coconut cream pie which came highly recommended, the chocolate cream pie, and the banana pudding. Maybe other people set too-high expectations for the coconut pie, but I thought it was just "good" not "blow your mind awesome" like I'd been led to believe. The chocolate pie was unremarkable. We went last night after hearing great reviews. After being seated, several servers worked around us and one finally acknowledged us about 5minutes later and brought some waters. She told us our server would be right over. With full hands of dirty plates, our server managed to write down our full order a few minutes later. About 20minutes later our server brought some rolls and cornbread (thankfully because we were starving) and apologized for our food taking awhile. That was the last time we saw our server. As far as I could tell, we were the last table seated. Meanwhile, we can see the whole staff in the back cleaning up and doing side work. Fuming, we sat there with another server rudely sweeping under our feet and anxiously waiting for the food/ server/ manager to appear. Then at least 30minutes after ordering, the manager came over and asked how everything was??? He was clueless!!! We told him we were very upset how long it was taking and that we were about ready to walkout. He never looked us in the eye and didn't even apologize before turning around to go "check" on our food. Meanwhile, my five year old is literally yelling "bring me my food". We never saw our server or the manager again, and left about 5minutes later without ever seeing our food. The most disappointing part was the staff was obviously too busy doing their side work at 745pm to serve my hungry family, and not even the manager cared to make sure we left happy. The servers here are always knowledgeable, friendly and provide excellent service. The food is very good, it's true "home cooking" with a family atmosphere. The homemade desserts are awesome, but if your heart is set on the Desert of the Day you'd better order it when you get there so they will save you a slice!! read more

This is the restaurant where you can get good home cooking and tonight great service. Quick tip about seating. Ask to be seated on the right side as you enter otherwise you may find yourself in the middle of a family with lots of kids. There is a play area on the left side. The right side is quieter and willa a,ow you to enjoy your dinner. There are several items on the menu and daily specials change from time to time. There is a monthly calendar at the door so as you depart pick one of those up to see what your next dining night might be. We had an excellent waitress that checked on us serval times. I ordered the chicken fried steak, with sliced tomatoes and greens. My spouse had the pan fried chicken breast with squash and greens. Both had rolls and cornbread. The cornbread was very good. The chicken fried steak was covered with white gravy and my spouse had her gracy on the side. If you love canned veggies, frozen chicken fried steak, indelible greasy wings and very stale tasting food then this place is for you. I knew we were in trouble when my tortilla soup was lukewarm and absolutely covered in Doritos and cheese. Turns out, the Doritos were the best part of my entire meal! The ham and cheese quiche was gross and appeared to have been made a week ago and warmed back up in the microwave. Soggy and rubbery crust is never a good thing. My husband's chicken fried steak was obviously frozen, not handmade as the menu states. I'm from Texas and I know what homemade CFS looks like and that was NOT one. My son, who is a chicken wing expert, did not finish his wings because they "tasted funny".. So my hubby tasted them and said the grease in the fryers obviously needed to be changed a month or more ago. For my son not to eat every bite of his wings, I know something is seriously wrong. My daughter did like her kid's spaghetti plate, but that alone is not worth the $33 we spent. The restaurant was clean, the restrooms were clean and the wait staff was friendly. String Bean is a staple to our North Dallas neighborhood and is a reliable down home meal. I want to write about my recent experience with the manager and catering. I thought about using them recently when my father passed away as he really liked going there. I had never used them for catering and called to see what they had to offer. The manager/staff was super friendly and when I told them the event we were catering for they also threw in a side of compassion for free. I was unclear of what I wanted for 45 people, but they gave a great suggestion of pot roast and grilled chicken with veggies. We had the green beans, mashed potatos and rolls as well. The price of $9 per person included the plates, utensils, condiments, etc. The delivery man was on time and set up quickly so we didn't have to think of anything on a tough day for us. I will definitely think of them again for our get togethers - thank you String Bean staff! read more

Most of them are friendly and experienced, but there are a few guys that are not too friendly or polite; they may be new, so I want to give them the benefit of the doubt. On March 27, 2014, a friend and I had lunch at the String Bean. It was her second time to eat there, I've been several times. We sent specifically because that day's special was liver and onions. The liver had some sort of breading that was soggy and stuck to the roof of your mouth. The crisp bacon that was to come with it...was limp and wet. The vegetables were overdone and waterlogged. The food appeared to have been cooked for some time and reheated when ordered. I was very disappointed in the meal, and wrote the restaurant directly so that they could correct what I thought to be a bad day. I received no response. I won't go back. To pay for food that isn't good...I could go to a fast food place and get that! Our waitress, however, was very good. Shame she can't be the cook! read more

The food itself is great enough to go back. The atmosphere is great enough to make us go back. BUT the reason that we will rave about the String Bean and go back again and again is because of our waitress, Rene. Everything about this restaurant was perfect! The food is good but service is horrible. I called to place an order but was told they were too busy to take my order and asked that I call back later. I've never experienced that before so I'll be taking my business elsewhere from now on. The person wasn't concerned either when I expressed my disbelief. Also the person was a manager. The String bean has been fairly good in the past. Several months ago we ate at the new location and had a bad experience. We had to send my wifes order back because it was undercooked. After we sent it back the Owner/Manager came to our table and started berating us for sending back the food. She said her cook had been cooking for her for over twenty years and never makes mistakes, and further, we might just want to go somewhere else to eat. We should have left but this caught me by surprise, so my wife ordered something else. When it arrived, the manager came to our table and informed us that that was to be her lunch and she generously gave it up for us. This dish was substandared as well as everything else we ordered. We will never go back, and when the String Bean is mentioned in a converstion, I make sure that people know about this experience. Not worth one star but I had to mark something. Barry E read more

I wouldn't go here again if you paid me. I sat at the bar on a slow night two weeks ago. The bartender was also my waitress and she could not have been more distant, rude, and inattentive. It took a long time just to get my drink because some other workers walked up to the bar and they shot the breeze. She didn't write down my order so I had to repeat it to her three times. She asked me if I wanted cornbread or rolls or a mix. I said just rolls three times. I thought she was messing with me because it is just rolls! She brought the mix! I got the roast beef which was good, the mashed potatoes were probably better when they were made that morning, and the broccoli was awful. After I got my food, the waitress didn't come by and check if everything was good or not. I had another waitress notice my tea was low and she got me a refill. Well I've eaten here several times before but today I had an AWFUL EXPERIENCE. I had already called my food in, drove to pick it up on my 30 minutes lunch break. I went to the bar to pick up my food and the bartender was fixing drinks but totally ignored me. I stood there for about 5-10 minutes and she totally ignored me. She NEVER once asked if she could help me, or say that she would be right with me, Or for that matter just ask another worker to help. So then I went to the hostess desk and ask for management. She stated I'm the manager "What can I do for you?" I told her that I had a call in order and I was on lunch and my lunch was almost over.
