I'm going to do something I rarely do. That is to relay my bad experience yesterday at one of my former favorite places to eat. They served my order so overdone, I probably won't find time to return any time soon and certanly won't allow ambush of anyone else with a multi-star review. I was unmistakably clear about my order being cooked only to the point that left it "still moving". My exact words. I had previously ordered it to be something a vet could bring back. And considering the quality of meat they then used on those numerous occasions, boom, they hit it right on the head, almost steak tartar, as preferred. And wait staff said she recognized us from prior visits. It was either the empty tea glass or the char burger I had been pushing around on my plate, but she finally returned table side to inquire if everything was all right. One look and she immediately admitted way overdone and offered to have the chef try again. My dining partner and I were on a tight schedule and didn't have time. I declined and ate a little more but did not finish as it seemed to be even more done in the center. To add insult to injury, the $40.00 plus tab, for two overdone burgers, two teas and tip had been adjusted by $5.00. I have hosted and recommended this place to many diners. I hope they made the most out of my patronage. It took a serious hit with one damn burned $19.00 hamburger and tea, and the quality of beef is hard to appreciate when burned to the point mine was. Once again The Press blows us away with fresh flavors, great service and gourmet flair. Best cheeststeak sandwich we have had since moving south! Had Pichana which had excellent flavor, super garlic mashed potatoes and butternut squash sauteed with spinach and onion. What a combination!! For dessert you cannot skip the white chocolate bread pudding... to make it really over the top add a scoop of thier vanilla brown sugar ice cream. Oh My! read more

We were seated and Vanessa greeted us with a friendly smile. Her suggestions were on mark for finding out our best choices. I had The Conquistador burger which at first glance is a bit pricey for a burger. $16. Don't let the price sway your from having a wonderful culinary delight of tasting what they can artfully put together. My wife had the build your own burger, which was also amazing. My husband and I opted for an early dinner because we had things to do later. I was not terribly hungry and had been interested in one of their lunch specials but it was too late for that. I got the buffalo chicken sandwich and fried pickles and iced tea. It came out fast, beautifully plated and it was delicious. It says a lot to have enjoyed something so much when you are not overly hungry. The service was top notch. All I can say is yum!!! The prime rib sandwich is the bomb..... I could defiantly pass on the fries though. I think a curly fry of some sort would complement the sandwich a little better. I've been here twice now. The first time I ordered the Datil Burger and today I got the Minorcan Burger. I definitely preferred the Datil Burger but both were good. The Minorcan Burger, I found, was difficult to eat. The grilled onions and chorizo did not sit well on the Burger and fell off while I was eating. The Datil Burger is still a messy burger to eat but it is so good. The buns, which are made at the restaurant, are delicious. The Press has a wide variety of craft beers on tap and in bottles/cans as well as a handful of wines to choose from. read more

So we rolled into town from a day of traveling. First time at The Press, I was impressed with food and service. Any place that has a multitude of adult beverage choices, should give taste samples. And they did not disappoint, tried the FL Hefner and it was tasty. The fried pickles were not your average pickles, they use bread n butter pickles and they were awesome. We tried the blackened chicken tacos and the Dario burger. Oh my, we shared and what a great choice. Both are amazing, the wife got flat bread and it was delicious. Maybe the sit-down service is better. I was looking for a quick, light lunch bite and being that The Press is 0.5 miles away from my job, it came up in the "what's nearby" Yelp recommendations. I didn't want to sit-in, I didn't want to commit to a full-on meal, but I DID want to try something different in the plaza other than my usual. The stars aligned and I called in a kid's cheeseburger order to go. I called and Audrey took my order. Maybe we can attribute it to her being busy (I don't know for sure as it was a phone order), but she could not recommend a side for my cheeseburger when I asked for a recommendation other than fries. Even after I asked what "her personal favorite" side was followed by "what's your best seller", she replied that she "liked them all" and to the second question she answered that "sells them all." Finally she threw out coleslaw as an option, and I went with the potato salad instead. 15 minutes later, I arrived to pick up my order and Audrey was working the register. I paid my $10 bucks plus tip. Audrey packed my meal, asked if I wanted condiments, and sent me on my way. Nothing to add or takeaway from that. When I got home and sat down to eat, I was blown away at how huge the kid's burger was. Good, bad?... I don't know. But, the flavor was ok and it was ultimately a good tasting burger. The potato salad was bland and I'm not a fan. (That rhymed!) Final thoughts: As a first timer I'll say that the phone-in/pick-up order service needs work, and being that one of my all-time St. Augustine favorites is almost the next door neighbor of The Press, they would be hard to bypass again with this "meh" first impression in mind. A great family owned restaurant right off SR-16. Not too much open after 9pm and this place was a found almost by accident and it was a home run. The beer and wine selection was excellent. Went to The Press this afternoon . They serve through, although technically, dinner begins at 5:00 or 6:00 pm. I've read a lot of good reviews and it didn't disappoint. I guess you'd call it a gastropub - quite informal, but with a large beer list and excellent food. The wines could stand improvement, but most people probably don't order wine. I did, and I'd say the house wine is better than the higher end. In any case, we started with the calamari. Order it! Truly excellent. We then had a steak salad and a burger, both of which were also excellent. I would have gotten their chicken and wild rice special, which looked great, but I wanted a salad. Then we had the white chocolate bread pudding. Don't miss this - it's not the dried out lump of congealed bread you usually get, but a lovely custard delight. Checked out The Press while looking for something outside of the more crowded parts of town and I'm so glad we did! I had the steak salad and my companions had the buffalo chicken sandwich, the prime rib sandwich, and a mahi sandwich that was a special not on the regular menu, each sandwich was served with a side. When the food arrived, the portions were generous. The prime rib sandwich in particular could easily feed two people. To say that everyone enjoyed their food would be an understatement. I don't think my husband left a single crumb on his plate! The steak on my salad was tasty, very tender, and complimented the grilled vegetables and blue cheese crumbles very nicely. My friends with sandwiches raved about the bread. I'm low-carbing it these days so I didn't try it but it looked wonderful. I also didn't try my husband's bread pudding but he didn't leave any of that behind, either. There were choices for so many dietary needs and preferences. Vegetarian, low carb, low fat, etc. They had an extensive beer list and wines as well.
