To me, The Nickel was just OK, and pricey, when we were there for an early dinner this week. It's a small menu with just 13 items total on the dinner menu (plus 3 desserts). Three items are appetizers, which our server said means a single item -- apparently $8 for one deviled egg (with caviar), $9 for one mozzarella stick, $6 for one hush puppy. We didn't try those, although in other reviews, it sounds like people enjoyed the small plates, so maybe we missed out. One person I was with got the duck confit and liked it; one got the burger and said it was really good; we all thought the fries were fantastic. The $32 Airline Chicken was a tad overcooked/dry, served with a small amount of creamed corn, some sad-looking pea tendrils, and about 8 green beans that had been left on the vine too long to be cooked very lightly, as they were, so they tasted rather bitter. Two of us each had the same entree and one glass of the least expensive wine on the menu, and our portion of the bill came to over $110, which just seems excessive. The ambiance is nice, and it's a great location for a DCPA show. But it was ... just OK. read more

It's a very pretty space with high airy ceilings. Our seating was nice and it was chatty but we could hear each other at our table well enough. The waitress did great except she didn't refill my water often enough. If someone stays with water as their beverage, why can't they be offered a normal size glass? Especially when that person orders the most expensive dish on the menu? Speaking of the dish, the New York strip plate was mostly very good, maybe not $47 good though with the number of really gristly pieces I had to remove from my mouth because I could not chew them enough. Beware the serving sizes as well. The first three items will get you ONE of each item. The next few items are shareables supposedly, but the duck confit at least was dinky and mostly like a hearty bite, consisting of about a cup of sort of shredded (tasty) crispy bits and some bib lettuce. The airline chicken seemed to be a good option and it was pleasant overall. But for value and taste the burger is the way to go. Good taste, good presentation and cook on the burger and the fries were exceptional. Would I go again? Probably not. Was I mad about any of it? No. read more

Very impressive! Simple menu with Chef's flare! I started things off with the Steak Tartare Toast. Not crazy about the bread, but the mixture of chopped steak with pickles, chive mixed with lite mustard and caped with an egg yolk. That's was good. My pic is missing a bite off the side so you know. I was told that the pasta is homemade each day and is really good, but it was missing a protein, so I asked for them to add the seared Duck, and they obliged. You can really pick out the truffle flavor and the Duck was an outstanding choice. Definitely worth the up charge. The bar has a full selection of liquor but was missing all the Buffalo Trace Bourbons, including my fav Blantons. But that was enough to deter me from a five star rating. The restaurant itself gives a very welcoming vibe with soft relaxing music and big front windows with long side drapes. Hug ceilings and low hanging big soft lights gives it an upscale feel. For dessert I had the Bourbon Almond Cake . With Butterscotch, apple, and Ice cream, how could you go wrong. I sat at the bar and the service was excellent. Decided to try the Nickel before a DCPA show. Named after the nickel fare customers paid to ride the streetcars, much of the decor pays homage to the Denver Tramway trolleys. We sat at the bar, since this is where you can get HH bites and drinks. (HH runs Tues-F, 4-6pm) Our server was amazing and very attentive. She paced our items well, and didn't rush us since we had plenty of time to waste before our show. The small bites are only small in size. They are big on flavor. The corn beignet had a little spicy kick, the crab salad delicately wrapped in a cucumber was citrusy, and the squash blossom was lightly battered with tempura. The Nickel Salad was a generous portion that could be shared. The herb white balsamic dressing was addictive and paired well with the red grapes and blue cheese. The regular menu charcuterie board came with 3 cheeses and 3 meats, fruit, nuts, jam, and perfectly toasted, seasoned baguette slices. Generous pours of wine at $10 a glass for HH were a perfect pairing. I will definitely return to the Nickel at the Hotel Teatro. read more

The food, drink, service, and atmosphere at the Nickel is worth every penny! The Nickel is located inside the Hotel Teatro. This is a fancy, historic hotel which has been around for 100+ years. The Nickel offers a Happy Hour every Tuesday-Friday from 4-6pm. It is a great place to hang out if you are waiting for a show at the DCPA Arts complex which is just across the street. We ordered little bites on their HH menu (corn beignet, squash, and blue crab salad) all were very good. The bartender/our server described them as an amuse bouche and she was right on with that description. We also selected The Nickel Salad (which can be split. It is large portion on the HH menu). The White Balsamic Vinaigrette dressing is amazingly good on this salad btw! To finalize our meal, we split the regular menu order of the Charcuterie Board - also delicious. Everything was divine, decadent, and reasonably priced. To get the HH prices, you must sit at the bar. This worked out well as our bartender/server was very nice, friendly, and even split out the salad into two portions for us. Great place to go - even if you're not a hotel guest. read more

Good and bad. First off, we were seated promptly and greeted appropriately. Our orders were taken, drinks and food delivered. Very lovely setting with a large bar - bright and well lit. The food was fresh and good. That's went it went downhill. I was so thirsty and kept looking for our server for a refill. Even though it's a hotel restaurant it's delicious! They were a little understaffed but did their best and were very friendly. The worst was just the wait to be seated; the food came out hot and fresh. It's a beautiful area that has a cozy sophisticated feel. My dad stayed at this hotel while he was visiting town. We decided to try this restaurant which is located inside the hotel. We came around 6:30pm and were seating immediately. The menu is small, but they have some staple items. The burger was delicious and cooked to perfection the fries were also super plentiful. I wasn't super hungry so me and my dad decided to share it. My dad also had the beet salad which was a tad small but if you accompany it with something then you will be good. Our waitress Rachel was great, super nice and made sure everything came out in a timely manner. The decor was all very cozy with whiskey barrels surrounding and the chairs were also very comfortable. If you stay at the hotel, they give you these $10 vouchers to dine at the Nickel, depending on how many days you stay at the place. Great technique to have you eat from their restaurant. I tried a few items from their breakfast or brunch menu during my stay at the hotel. The seasonal toaster strudel was enjoyable, but the nickel salad was just alright. Nothing was amazing here. The Nickel in the Hotel Teatro used to be a good option for dining before a show at the nearby DCPA. If you ate dinner there, valet parking was free and most of the food was well executed. Things have changed. You now pay $25 to park (plus valet tip) even if eating dinner. We sampled 2 white wines, both tasted poor so I ordered a blood orange cocktail instead. It looked pretty, but every sip provided a strong whiff of an unpleasant-smelling egg white foam on top. Ech. I left most of it untouched. No bread was offered. Our tiny "side salads" consisted of a few lettuce leaves and lots of sliced grapes (in salad?) with crumbles of dry, tasteless cheese. Only one dressing was available--also unpleasant-tasting. A friend ordered croquettes with speck. She received one. My burger was good but it was served with the kind of crinkle fries you buy by the bag at the supermarket. We were still hungry at the end of the meal so we ordered ice cream. It's hard to screw up Haagen-Dazs. Our waiter was charming and attentive; clearly this stingy and disappointing meal was not his fault. They are really cutting corners at the Nickel. We won't be back. read more

Overall we had a pleasant experience at the nickel. The atmosphere was clean and inviting, the food was tasty, and the service was excellent. We had 5pm dinner reservations, but we showed up closer to 4pm. We were greeted right away and promptly seated at the corner booth. Best seats in the house because you can see the entire restaurant from there and there's a cozy feeling. It also felt exclusive because there is only 1 corner booth table. The manager presented my wife and I with complimentary champagne! Initially I wondered why, and then I remembered that I mentioned that it was our 12th anniversary. A totally unexpected surprised for us. We loved the gesture, even though my wife can't drink alcohol. No problem though, I drank for both of us and it was delicious. We started with calamari appetizer, which was served with a saffron mayo-based sauce and a chimichurri sauce. The calamari was sliced very thin. We prefer thicker slices and cooked more tender, but the thin slices were appropriate for the way it was cooked. Had they sliced it thicker and cooked it the same way, it would have been way too chewy. The saffron sauce was very nice and we finished it. The chimichurri sauce tasted good, but I wanted a piece of steak to pour it over. There was not too much breading, but we would have preferred less. It actually would have been perfect amount of breading if the calamari were sliced thicker. My wife ordered the salmon and I ordered the duck. Beautiful presentation on both thoughtfully composed entrees. The salmon dish was decent. Skin cooked crisp and presented facing up. We asked for medium salmon, but it was more like medium-well. It still tasted good. Better salmon could be found at restaurants like ocean prime, but that's a pretty high bar. The squid ink risotto should have been cooked longer because it had too much texture; the center of each grain was just on the edge of undercooked. The duck was a perfect medium to medium-rare doneness. The duck skin was marvelously crispy with rendered fat. Espresso carrots were very good too, and something I never encountered before. I also ordered a vesper martini cocktail. It tasted great. Something I noticed is that they don't use bottom shelf liquor to make their featured cocktails. I love this because I always feel self-conscious whenever I order a cocktail from the menu and then ask them to do something like replace the seagram's gin with tanqueray. Our waitress was very nice, friendly, and professional. The prices were decent, considering the location of the restaurant, the quality of the food, and the quantity of food. read more

Came here twice on the same day because we stayed at the Teatro Hotel and had bizarre experiences. When we came in during the afternoon, we just ordered coffee to do some work on our laptops. The waiter was dismissive and didn't check up on us at all throughout the rest of the time even though there were barely any customers during that time. We ended up leaving a decent tip despite that. Latte was good though. When we came back for dinner, that same waiter was magically wonderful to us. Must be the magic of tipping. We were constantly checked up on and had great service. The steak was pretty good quality and I enjoyed the cocktail. The next morning we ended up eating here for breakfast since we had the breakfast credits. Stood at the entrance for awhile with no one at the front to greet us and someone from the hotels front desk had to help us by going into the nickels kitchen to grab someone to help us. All was jolly until we ordered our food and we waited almost an hour just to get our orders wrong. Luckily they fixed it pretty quick but I noticed tables that were seated after us got their order faster when we just offered plain eggs. We were not checked up on at all that morning. We decided the Nickel was the worst meal of our five day trip, and we love most breakfasts. Tried the Denver Benedict and Rancher Hash only to leave both entrees barely nibbled on. The dishes left a nasty soapy taste on the food, and the steak had an overly undercooked fatty flavor in each bite. We were severely disappointed in the Nickel since the atmosphere was nice and the menu/presentation seemed of a higher quality. Mushroom risotto was a mass of gray glop on the plate with random pieces of overcooked chicken strewn about, and the spring salad was a plateful of green lettuce leaves drenched in greasy green dressing with a few grape halves scattered on top--both nearly inedible. This attractive and disappointing restaurant seems to have such potential, so close to the DCPA...but that's its downfall I suppose: it's packed with pre-show diners from 5:30 to 7:15, and then empty by the 7:30 curtain.
