I love being the skeptic, so the fact that this place has stolen that from me and replaced it with a perfectly pair of perfectly toasted rye slices, between them some delicately sauteed onions and a tender, yet robust patty of beef, makes me simply irate. So irate that I'll probably just eat my feelings with this DELICIOUS PATTY MELT. Okay, the fawning has stopped. Its just a damn good burg, and the fries are like old fast food french fries. Really, really, really good. Besides the Sandwich That Shall Not Be Named, there are plenty of other reasons to love The Narrows. During the winter, when the sun has all but abandoned us, The Narrows kindly serves up hot toddies and warm ciders to thaw our weary souls. During the summertime, we can delight ourselves with $1 oysters and $6 tecate/tequila shots (or bud/whiskey) during their gracious Happy Hour, I believe 4-7. The food has ALWAYS satisfied and I've brought a few crews here for some late night eats. One narrow passage seperates the front seating areas and the back. The backyard closes at 12 (or is it now 11?) and is probably the spaciest of the bushwick roundup, especially if you pin it against the Kings County 'garden' space. The mixed drinks are all class, but the best drink special is the shot of house-infused jalepeño tequila and a bottle of sol. I won't say much for their beer collection, but if a bar has a decent brooklyn lager or six point that's always easy middle ground for the less strongly tasted. Some may dislike the size constraints in the main corridor, but I have no qualms with that personally if you show up early, or at the right time, and nab a seat. read more

I love this place. I live nearby in one of the big converted loft boxes, and wanted something that wasn't yet more Edison bulbs, reclaimed wood tables, chalkboards, and other such annoying prattles of contemporary conformity. At the Narrows, I got what I had always asked about, which is to say, the 30s American modernism-esque style made true. Nice sconces, good atmospheric lighting, good strong classic drinks (Not really super experimental), more than decent food. The fries in particular are probably some of the best in the area. Although I was attended by a gaggle of lovely ladies, I was not overly intoxicated by this place, at least not enough to merit a four star rating. Some people are turning into BK snobs! I stepped up to the bar to find only a single bartender scrambling a bit to make all these fancy concoctions. He seemed to struggle. He seemed a bit flippant when I tried to order. A smuttynose IPA... easy enough. I guess he was just not used to keeping a busy bar. I have to say I also found the whole thing a bit odd... I mean here we are all this way out in BK to get away from the manhattan swank, and what do we do but build a small temple to manhattan style, a art deco cum speakeasy that would fit right in with all of it's East Village brethren. Just a brief update to point out that the Narrows now serves food. After ordering a pretty expensive plate of onion rings, I was brought out 5... yes... 5 tiny onion rings stacked up on each other. Were they good? Yes. When I am raging and seeking out grease do I require only 5 onion rings? No, the wrath of my drunk stomach could eat an entire bucket--and probably would eat out of a bucket--if it came down to that. I want to like the Narrows a lot. The cocktails are good, the staff is friendly, and I dig the space (which is now a lot bigger by the way--they expanded to make room for the kitchen and more tables!)... But the food menu is a joke with proportions that make Baby Jesus weep. Maybe this shit flies in the West Village or something, but keep this shit away from Bushwick. read more

The first time I came to the Narrows I LOVED it. The Caufield Dream was just right, and the backyard in the winter made me excited for Bushwick in the summer.. But after frequenting this bar at 3-4 AM on my drunken way home from wherever else in the neighborhood, probably just another local bar, I found it underwhelming. I was overcharged for my drinks on industry night the drinks are normally $12, but on Mondays it's half off I was charged $12 for each drink that I ordered and gave a tip when I realized I was being overcharged I was told they can't give me money back because it was all cash transactions and there's no way to prove it which sounded to me like you can't prove it so we're keeping you're money. I went to order my final drink of the night finally, realizing I was overcharged and only gave half of the price without a tip, which I assumed would be OK since I paid so much extra money. No, not the case I got hassled into giving another tip and also threatened to get kicked out if I didn't so I proceeded to give a 1$ tip on top of the tip I already gave earlier and the extra money that was basically stolen from me. The patio in the back is great, but the inside isn't anything special, as far as design and decor. The bar area is black and white, and I actually don't really like the shiny black paneling they have in the front part. It looks shoddy and cheap to me. It's also so narrow that it can be annoying to stand and wait for a drink while others are trying to pass by. I've never sat in the booth/table service section, so I don't have anything to say about that. Still, it's a solid bar, the bartenders are friendly, and it's a good place for a casual drink. It's not obnoxiously loud and you don't feel the need to dress a certain way or anything. It's also nice that it's not overly romantic. People are just there to hang and have a good time. I like the fact that it feels super unpretentious and chill, especially in the enclosed back area. They could use a few more stools over there, but it's a nice open space. Love this bar. What this place lacks in space, it easily makes up for in top notch drink quality. The Narrows creates cocktails that rival any bar in Manhattan, easily. Even better is their beer and shot special, which is a lemon infused Sol and a shot of jalapeno infused tequila. Prices are reasonable and during the summer, the outdoor area is to die for. I loved my experience here, I'd definitely be back. My friend and I were pub crawling through the neighborhood, and were a bit nervous about popping into a fancy-looking place for a cocktail (given that we mostly had stopped at dive-y places before and after). We were pleasantly surprised by both the prices ($8 cocktails) and the friendly staff. Speakeasy-like in style, The Narrows offers a number of well-priced and well-mixed cocktails in a laid back environment. My friend and I dropped by for a Friday post-dinner drink, and enjoyed these and the lovely weather in the garden area. I'm a fan. But only because of the delightful, kitschy cocktails. The Caulfield's Dream is particularly yum. The indoor area is small and neighborhood sized, but they have a pretty spacious outdoor patio area. The bartenders are cute and friendly. One fatal flaw is the prices. Especially because of its location. When the Narrows first opened, prices were great. They had the Jalapeno tequila + beer special and Caulfield's Dream for $6. Now my favorite cocktail is $8. My roommate brought all of us shots, including his Vodka Tonic, and it came out to around $45. Sure, it was Patron but, seriously, it was way too much. It's a great bar but the prices put on quite the damper. I still recommend people to come and try their unique, delicious cocktails. They are the Narrow's saving grace. read more

OH MY GOD THESE OYSTERS. I've never had such meaty, juicy $1 oysters in my life. They are perfectly shucked, and are so tasty, they don't even warrant cocktail sauce on the side. The art deco decor is beautiful, cocktails were wonderful and well made, and I love the backyard patio. Most of the staff members were courteous and friendly, all except the server who was incredibly rude to me for no apparent reason. I sat with a few of my friends in the backyard patio, enjoying a pleasant conversation over a few drinks, our server came over and greeted everyone except me and proceeded to take everyone's order except mine. I had to stop her from leaving my table, without taking my order over three times! Now, I don't know what I did to make this women behave in such a manner, but I felt completely alienated by this person. I am not one to claim racism, but I was the only one in my group, who wasn't of a light skin complexion, and was treated differently without uttering a word -- I call that racism. I didn't move to Bushwick to face any sort of racism or classism, if I wanted to deal with the latter I'd move to Manhattan. That being said, I will not let one person at an establishment take away from all of the the good that a staff has done. I will continue going to this bar, like I have for the past 4-odd years that I've been here. Love this bar. Only thing I dislike is that you never know when it will be full or empty.. The backyard is nice in the warmer weather. It's a bit more upscale of a bar, they actually take their cocktails somewhat seriously, so if you want to drink vodka crans, seabreezes, and pound PBR's all night you might as well skip it. (They have none of those - no fruit juice, and their beers are all actually good beer.) Why am I seeing a photo of buttermilk fried chicken???!! I want that!! I went there for the first time last week and ended up going three more times since. The staff was convivial, informed about their craft and even made an off menu cocktail for a friend, which though not to my taste, my friend said was perfect. For my tastes, the Caufield's Dream was a dream. It tastes so good, I literally have to force myself not to drink it like a shot. The atmosphere inside is wonderful. The low-level lighting, decoration, nice bar top, and lack of outdoor signage etc. combined gives the place a feel as if you've just discovered a little gem. Which considering the neighborhood is kinda true. The back patio has a garden feel to it, abundant seating and an awning and seating are under construction. I'm hoping that they put a back bar there too, as the way in which the seating surrounding the bar is set up could make it difficult to get drinks when the place gets busy. Now as for the prices, let me just say that I am someone that knows how to and likes to save a buck wherever possible. When I was hopping freights on the train lines of the northeast at 16 years old I would often drink mouthwash to get drunk as it was cheaper than bum wine and that way I also didn't have to buy a toothbrush, toothpaste, gum. Anyway, that said, the drinks here are well priced. Yes, the spicy shot and sol combo is so more unique than the typical shot beer combo, but so is the everything on the menu. read more

This was a pre-gaming bar for my boyfriend and I before we had dinner at nearby Roberta's. I had been once before and really liked it, especially considering the other bars in the area. This time around, however, we discovered the back patio and I absolutely loved it. For a Friday night around 7:30 p.m., it was really quite chill - not too many people were around. I love this place. I heard about this place from another person that lives in Bushwick. I think all the great bars popping up all over the place is wonderful. This place offers a respite from Wreck Room. They have solid drinks here. And the jalapeno shot and sol for $6, as mentioned by others here is the way to go.
