Another pleasant meal at the Hound. Little mess up on timing between appetizer and meal we ordered. Appetizer brought to table and just 30 second later our meals were brought out. I told the food server to take the meals back until we could enjoy the appetizer. Within a minute Steven, owner I think, was at our table apologizing for timing. Said he would start our meals over. Very overrated... If you have higher standards, this place won't meet them. Best way to describe it would be "College kids who haven't experienced excellent cuisine think this place is amazing" The "Big Fat Ribeye" was extremely sad. I've been eating at Fleming's and Mastros for years now and recently moved to this area. I'm hoping to find a solid ribeye replacement, and this was one of the local spots to try out.... Nope. My wife had the Korean BBQ ribs as did one of my daughters. They both loved them, so there's that I guess... The sides were delicious however, and the ambiance is neat. Went to The Hound Saturday February 8th after the LSU game. The Hound is a Consummate Toomer's Corners spot. After walking from the Toilet papered trees to The Hound I was ready to try some beer, bacon & biscuits. Strongest IPA was a Bell's from Michigan. Bacon flight was ok, sweet potato biscuits with bourbon apple butter were better. All were good. Prompt service. Text program gave me the table I originally wanted after watching it sit vacant for 20+minutes... they probably were thinking it was still football season.. Must be a zoo then. read more

Really enjoyed my dinner here with friends while I was in Auburn. I had a couple of the cocktails - can't remember which - but I can remember they were whiskey based and quite nice. Suffice it to say the menu is extensive and well written on this front. As an appetizer, we got an array of flavored bacon. This was probably the least interesting part of the meal - of course the fatty pig meat was delicious, but I don't think the flavoring quite matched the names they gave it. I still gobbled it up.. but the naming was off. For my meal I had the meatloaf burger. Order it. Eat it. Enjoy it, as I did. This was a really nice meal. The patty was more like meat than meatloaf, but I won't split hairs over their ratio of bread to meat in their meatloaf. So my family and I have been here 6 times before our most recent two visits. Recently, we were in town for a swim meet and ate dinner and brunch here. Both, as always, were delightful. Out of everything we ate, the B.T.A sandwich is for sure the best thing and the granola french toast as well as "The Nasty" are exquisite dishes. Back again this time for another lunch (same yummy BLA as above!!). Also came for dinner after the game. We ate burgers made-to-order...yum! The enormous (not kidding- I'm from TX and we know BIG) Brussels appetizer with bacon (!) vinaigrette did not last long at our table. Wow. I've been to the Hound several times for brunch and twice for dinner, and needless to say, brunch is by far my preferred time to go. The $14 bottle of champagne + juice for mimosas is enough for several glasses, and the shrimp and grits ($14) is sure to please both a grits lover and non-lover alike. The shrimp has a nice kick to it and the grits are perfectly creamy. The biscuits and gravy and breakfast sandwiches have also been a hit in the past. The ambiance is fast-paced but with a charming and rustic feel, and even sitting at the bar is a good experience. Service is relatively quick and the serving staff all seem to be polite and quite prompt. They have always been willing to help or answer any questions we may have (especially whether or not things are gluten free or have certain ingredients). I cannot stress this enough, though...you will need reservations or will have to wait for quite some time whether you visit on a Saturday or a Sunday if coming for brunch. I made this mistake when I thought Saturdays would be less packed; spoiler: it wasn't. On a game weekend, if I'm remembering correctly, they do not take reservations and unless you get there early enough, I would be prepared to wait several hours. My biggest complaint is that the hostesses have never been overly friendly or helpful, and I still do not understand the system of seating groups. Several were seated before us with the same number of people (also without reservations). There is a community table, and upon arriving, we asked if we could sit at the open spaces; we were told only larger groups could sit there. It turns out, it was not being held for anyone and for the entirety of the two hours we were there (only 45 minutes of which were spent at a table), the spots still sat empty. read more

If you're looking for belly bustin' good food look no further! The Hound is the place to go! The Shrimp and grits entrée is a national treasure. The Redneck Benedict is a best kept secret along with the steak and eggs! Finally, the bison burger is to stampede for! My bison burger was perfectly cooked to barley medium with a hint of pink in the middle. The burger was heavenly! The toppings were seasoned perfectly, and the flavors complimented the bison wonderfully. The patty was juicy and flavorful and made my mouth water with each bite. Everyone else's entrees were very tasty and prepared to order. No one had any complaints as they cleaned their plates! The service was top notch and just right. Our beverages stayed full and all our requests were promptly complied with in spite of a full restaurant. This place is worth traveling to and experiencing the wonderful food and service! The Hound, FKA Bloodhound, should renamed themselves "Antlers" since it's antlers galore up in here. If you've ever wanted to visit a hipster hunting lodge, Auburn-style, this is it! This family-owned restaurant has been lovingly decorated with lots of reclaimed items (according to the website), and it certainly shows. I've been to The Hound a handful of times, for dinners with pals. This review will focus mostly on my most recent visit since that's freshest on my mind. Regarding libations, The Hound's tagline is "Bacon and Bourbon" so you'll find lots of the latter, and even cocktails with the former in them! I tried The Blue Symphony ($10). It features "Plymouth Gin, Gran Gala Orange Liqueur, with an exclusive blend of fresh blueberries, lemon juice, egg whites & Elderflower liqueur." Mmm, had to tell myself to sip this foamy concoction slowly. If beers are your preference, there are close to 30 beers on tap, with plenty of southern beers being represented. The average pint price was ~$5, if I recall correctly. The Hound's appetizers steal the show. Definitely get the deep fried green beans with addictive buttermilk sauce for dipping ($8) and watch how quickly they get snapped up. The sausage sampler ($12) is always fun; ask your server what's available that day. You can't go wrong with the pork rinds ($5) either. Bacon wrapped dates, I'll get you next time. I got the bison burger, though the roasted quail ($18) was quite tempting. For $15, you get a 1/3 pound bison patty, along with sauteed mushrooms, Swiss cheese, and tobacco onions. I just Googled tobacco onions; they're spicy frizzled onions. I didn't think they were too spicy however. There's a little room for error on the requested temp; my friend's beef patty looked to be on the rare side though that's not what she asked for. I got the house salad as my side over the fries. The house dressing wasn't bad but other choices can be chosen. Someone else got the fries, and they were too salty. The Hound is slightly overpriced. Ten bucks for a cocktail in Auburn is a bit much. I got a heirloom tomato salad once that was $9, and I thought that price tag could have been toned down some. All of the staffers have been super friendly. You can book reservations on OpenTable, and you can just call if you need to make a change or if your preferred timeslot isn't available. Parking is available right in front of the restaurant. The bathrooms are located in the entryway. To wrap up, while kinda pricey, The Hound definitely adds something positive to Auburn's downtown dining scene. read more

Definitely lived up to the hype. Cool place, sat at the bar and just soaked it in. Started out with the Tin Cup which is basically a whiskey me. It was good but a little sweet for my taste. Went with the pepper jelly app to start. Ritz crackers, cream cheese & pepper jelly. Great mix. Next up was Denver steak with Tabasco onions atop mashed potatoes. Steak was expertly medium rare and the Tabasco onions were perfect mixed in bite after bite with the mashed potatoes. Give myself a star for figuring that out. Decent wine list to choose from as well. Star of the show was dessert. A very friendly priced pour of Old Forrester Statesman. Amazingly deep whiskey list all moderately priced. They make the best veggie burger and Mac and cheese. However, while the menu boasts having a veggie burger, it is impossible to obtain. I went for dinner a couple months ago, and they had taken the veggie burger off the dinner menu in the day or so between making my reservation and going. I asked if I could order it at dinner anyway, and they said no. I'm vegetarian, so it just wasn't worth it to me to get only a salad without any protein and so we left. I went again for lunch, since the veggie burger is now only available during lunchtime on weekdays. However, they told me they were sold out of the veggie burger. I got the vegetable plate, but I had to leave off the collards because they were cooked with meat. The vegetables I got were underseasoned and poorly cooked and quite unappetizing. I had a pile of corn and a pile of green beans (both only flavored with butter and pepper) and some unsalted grits with a sandy texture. I didn't like it at all. Please make the veggie burger more available at meals and actually stock it during the few meals it is supposedly available. At this point after a few disappointments it just doesn't feel worth it to keep trying The Hound. read more

I stopped by The Hound for lunch with a girlfriend to fuel up before a day of boutique shopping in downtown Auburn! We both had not been before, but were determined to try it on the recommendation of multiple friends. We parked in the street near Toomer's Corner and walked to The Hound since the parking lots around the place were full. I would describe the feel as cozy and perfectly aligned with its New American/Southern Hospitality vibe (to quote another Yelper's review - "a hipster hunting lodge"). As an appetizer, we ordered the Pepper Jelly (homemade) served with cream cheese and Ritz (as it should be) and the Pimento Cheese with saltines (perfect). After just the appetizers, we were hesitant about having ordered entrees - my friend ordered the Shrimp & Grits and I had the Turkey, Bacon, & Avo sandwich. The bacon is a point of pride for the restaurant - I have forgotten exactly why but can tell you that it was phenomenal. Our aforementioned hesitation was unwarranted as we cleaned both of our plates. I was so very impressed with The Hound and really do consider driving back to Auburn someday solely to eat there again. read more
