    Shrimp and grits
    Jamie A.

Zazu in Opelika has a lot of potential and offers a solid dining experience overall, but a few things missed the mark for me. Service was very good and attentive. We tried a variety of dishes, and while some stood out, others left us a bit puzzled--especially the poutine. It came out cold and the flavor just wasn't there. We weren't really sure what direction they were going with it. On a more positive note, the shrimp and grits were pretty good. I just wish there had been a few more shrimp to round out the dish. The mahi was probably my favorite--it was cooked well, had a nice kick of spice, and was full of flavor. As a mushroom lover, I was excited to try the portobello mushroom appetizer. It was decent, but the sauce and overall flavor could've used a little more finesse. I did enjoy trying the beers on tap--especially the IPAs. Great variety and a fun touch for a casual dinner.

Stopped by on our way through town for dinner. The food here was absolutely amazing. Great price for excellent quality. The bartender and our server Cameron was knowledgeable, friendly, and had a really great vibe.

Beautiful restaurant, beautiful food, beautiful vibes! The multi-levels of the dining area allowed for a private evening, perfect for date night. The food was delicious and so were the drinks.

What a find! Wandering around Auburn, it was recommended that we explore the next neighborhood over - Opelika. Very charming place, but Zazu was a find. It is billed as a gastronomic, pub, and it wasn't an overstatement! We walked in and we were greeted by Sipsey, who was also our server. We were made to feel right at home! She explained the menu and recommended several wonderful things that we ordered. She made the visit special. The fire roasted oysters were absolutely to die for! I could've licked the shells. My husband had the Cuban sandwich with the duck fat fries, which he said was out of this world. I chose the falafel and side salad. Absolutely perfect! I paired it with a glass of Pinot Grigio and I couldn't have been happier. This place is not only beautiful and charming, but the service and food are out of this world! Would seek this place out when back in the area.

First time trying this place after a friend recommended and reading reviews. The restaurant has a very cool vibe. There are several floors and two bars. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. I will say the menu is small and not a whole lot of options in my opinion. We started with the poutine. It was really good. The fries really make this dish. For main dish I got the cheeseburger with more fries lol and wife got the hush puppies and Irish stew. The burger was ok but again the fries were great. Wife said hush puppies were good and Irish stew was really good. All in all restaurant is really cool and service is great. Food ranges from alright to pretty good.

Food and Service was good. Depending on the day you may need a reservation. We were able to sit outside and ordered drinks, apps, meals, and dessert. I got the pimento cheese burger and it was phenomenal.

I started off with the Moon Over Madagascar, and let me tell you--if this drink had a fan club, I'd be president. The black tea and vanilla combo sounded like a weird dare at first, but it ended up being shockingly amazing. Whoever came up with that mix deserves a bonus and maybe a parade. Now, let's talk about the shrimp and grits, because these were not just "good." These were "call your mama and tell her you've tasted greatness" good. The chef is from South Carolina, and you can taste every bit of Lowcountry pride in that bowl. Perfectly cooked grits? Check. Pile of blackened shrimp? Double check. A sauce that made me rethink my entire life? Oh yeah. If they sold that sauce by the gallon, I'd be bankrupt but extremely happy. Erica, our waitress, was an absolute rockstar. Super helpful, incredibly informative, and somehow managed to keep the perfect balance of friendly and professional--even on the Sunday after the Iron Bowl, when half of Auburn is stress-eating. The place was spotless too, which is impressive considering the emotional damage that game causes every year. Bottom line: The Hound is a must-visit. Come hungry, order boldly, and thank me later.

When we asked about drinks she brought over the bartender Josh, who was just as awesome! He made us a few bartender special beverages and you could taste the passion this man has for the job! Bravo to the staff, if we lived locally this would be a spot we would frequently regular at! The inside of the restaurant felt very grounded and well put together, and the patio looked just as cozy! We were recommended the Caesar salad from a server we ran into outside the restaurant which is what brought us into the restaurant. They make an in house dressing which had great flavor notes! The croutons were nice and airy, and the lettuce was perfectly crispy, a great Caesar salad. We ordered the cowboy burger and the steak sandwhich as our entrees with a side of Brussel sprouts and green beans. The burger was fantastic! Great balance of ingredients and a good size burger, very filling. The steak on my sandwich was so tender but it was a bit salty for my taste. My brussel sprouts also felt a little undercooked, but I still believe this restaurant deserves five stars because of the service they provide and the menu they curated

Was told by my colleagues that the Parker house rolls and cinnamon butter was great. I had the summer salad (spring greens, cherries, strawberries, and a HUGE knot of burrata cheese, with an additional grilled salmon). This salad was incredible. Highly recommend! The table shared some deviled eggs. The pickled onions on the deviled eggs was so good. Everyone dipped their fries in the chili crisp oil and agreed it was one of the best flavor combos of the trip. Our server gave us an extra side of it and gave my friend a side of kimchi to add to his burger. Just great all around service and vibe. The hostess was warm and efficient, seating us immediately. Our server approached with the quiet confidence of someone who knows her craft--she was direct, professional, and all business in the best possible way. Even as closing time drew near, she kept my glass refreshed without needing to be asked, a small but telling detail that spoke volumes about her attentiveness. The space itself strikes a pleasant semi-formal note--clean, polished, and respectful without veering into stuffy territory. Behind the bar, the bartender was meticulously wiping down every bottle, a quiet display of care that set a tone of genuine pride in the operation. We began with a dozen oysters: six raw and six char-grilled. The raw specimens were on the petite side for the price, yet delivered a clean, bright, and pleasantly saline flavor that let the oyster speak for itself. The char-grilled version arrived with a savory Parmesan crust that brought its own appealing character--rich, cheesy, and nicely caramelized in a way that felt unique rather than derivative. The crab dip, however, was a standout. Far superior to the often disappointing versions we've encountered elsewhere, this one tasted of genuine lump crab meat, folded into a properly cheesy, indulgent dip that avoided any unfortunate "buffalo" detours. Served with crisp crostini, each bite was balanced and deeply satisfying--an authentic crab dip done right. The Korean cheesesteak offered an excellent harmony of flavors: tender, well-seasoned meat beneath a luxurious blanket of melted cheese, punctuated by the bright, spicy kick of kimchi and the refreshing snap of pickles. It was delicious, though for the price, I wished for a more generous filling and a bit more heft to the sandwich overall. The mac & cheese arrived in a commendably generous portion, with a beautiful Parmesan crust on top. Visually appealing, the dish unfortunately fell a touch flat on the palate. The noodles were properly cooked and coated in a creamy sauce, yet it lacked the depth and seasoning one hopes for-- a pinch more salt and pepper would have elevated it considerably. The fish and chips presented a towering mound of fries that carried decent flavor but lacked the shattering crispness one craves. The real disappointment lay in the presentation of the fish: two fillets stacked atop one another, causing the steaming heat to turn the once-promising breading soggy and prone to sliding off. That said, the fish itself was excellent--flaky, moist, and delicately sweet with a lovely buttery quality. It was the unfortunate interaction between steam and crust that kept the dish from greatness. The roads were a little dense, so not necessarily my particular style, but I'm good. The butter that came with them was very unique to say the least. To drink, both beers arrived filled to the absolute brim and proved so enjoyable that I would gladly order them again without hesitation. Overall, the evening delivered solid, thoughtful plates in a well-run environment, with several bright spots that make a return visit tempting--particularly for those oysters and that excellent crab dip.

It's always sad to me when this happens, because in my opinion having great food is the hard part. Seeing them excel in that but fail the easy stuff is hard :( What they struck out on: - host and hostess chatting when we walked up, they seemed to be complaining about something. We didn't receive any smiles. Didn't feel like they wanted to be there. Yes I understand it's a job, but warm welcomes are important and they are the first impression for a customer when they walk in. - It was 80 degrees and dreadfully humid outside since it had been raining. They had the doors open and I didn't see or feel any fans or air conditioning running. I saw a patron using a hand fan while we ate. - Since there was no air conditioning running, all the steam from the dishwashing and cooking in the kitchen came out to the dining area and lingered in the air the entire time we ate. We thought it was smoke at first but it didn't have a smell, when we walked out to leave I felt the steam leaving the kitchen area - Unbearably loud. I'm not sure why the acoustics are so bad but there is just nothing absorbing any noise. All the ruckus just echoes. Pretty sure this was mainly due to the tables being somewhat close together and the chairs having no sound buffers. It was suuuper loud when people got up to leave and when bussers were cleaning the tables. - Out of the fried green tomatoes which we were excited to order. - I ran out of water while eating. My drink didn't get filled until maybe 10-15 mins later. - Our waitress was running around, very busy. We didn't get checked on that much. It wasn't her fault. She was very courteous and was working hard. They seemed to not have enough staff on hand. - The napkins shed everywhere? When I opened my napkin a cloud of lint came up from it. It was all over my black shorts when we left. - Ends of the tables were all scratched up. - Decor is a bit of a hodgepodge. Having fake candles at each table for a place that gives southern farmhouse is an interesting choice. - The pimento cheese plate came with only 5 mini pieces of toast. We had to ask for more which was an upcharge. There's no way all the pimento cheese could be eaten on 5 pieces. Their home runs: - The food was amazing. I really liked the steak frites. I ordered the steak medium. It was nice and tender. The fries were seasoned and crispy. The chimichurri sauce was great. My friend and I both liked the pimento cheese and the bread that it came with. We weren't crazy about the house pickles. My friend loved her caesar salad. - The prices are great. Super affordable for high quality food. - Menu is expansive. - We had no wait to be seated. - No trouble parking. Location is convenient. As you can see, the list of cons is very very long. It was truly an odd thing to experience, since the place had such great food. I'm thinking the Curious Pig needs a restaurant management consultant or something? We might try this place again sometime later. We'll see.
